Critical Communication Pedagogy And Its Relationship To Time, Labor, And Capitalism, Yvet Youssef
Critical Communication Pedagogy And Its Relationship To Time, Labor, And Capitalism, Yvet Youssef
Research Papers
As a GTA working in a critically oriented Communication Studies department at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, I am encouraged to be(come) an instructor whose teaching methods are steeped in the principles of critical pedagogy. One of the most inhibiting things I have come across as I have made attempts to uphold such principles of critical pedagogy is the issue of time.
This research report is about the problematic tension of trying to uphold a critical pedagogy in a system – a capitalist system – in which time is hard to come by. How can we perform an ethic of …
The Anticancer Effects Of The Different Analogs Of Cysteine Deleted Tachyplesin On A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Nathan Riley Hendrickson
The Anticancer Effects Of The Different Analogs Of Cysteine Deleted Tachyplesin On A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Nathan Riley Hendrickson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
It has been previously shown that cysteine-deleted tachyplesin (CDT) and its many analogs display antibacterial effects. However, little has been said about its possible anticancer effects and which analogs serve as the best inhibitors of the growing cancer cells. This research focused on CDT and four of its analogs: All D-CDT, Reverse DCDT, Reverse CDT, and Serine-Control CDT. MTT assays against the A549 adenocarcinoma lung cancer cell line showed All D-CDT to be the most effective analog in preventing cancer cell growth. Hyaluronidase and apoptosis assays were performed to better understand the mechanism by which the All D-CDT is preventing …
Contributors To Processing Speed Deficit In Old Age: A Focus On History Of Obesity And Medical Conditions, Melissa E. Pulcini
Contributors To Processing Speed Deficit In Old Age: A Focus On History Of Obesity And Medical Conditions, Melissa E. Pulcini
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity has been associated with impairment in most cognitive domains, but the nature of this relationship is unclear. Most studies have examined the relationship between cognitive impairment and current obesity and/or history of obesity-related medical conditions. However, a number of “lower-level” obesity factors (e.g., increased adipokines, low grade inflammation, chronic mild hypoventilation) are present even among the otherwise healthy obese population, and it is possible that many of these factors have differential impact on cognition according to magnitude and duration of exposure. Knowledge of a person’s weight history, which may serve as a proxy for a number of lower-level obesity …

How The Supreme Court Derailed Formal Rulemaking, Kent H. Barnett
How The Supreme Court Derailed Formal Rulemaking, Kent H. Barnett
Scholarly Works
Based on archival research, this Essay explores the untold story of how the Supreme Court in the 1970s largely ended “formal” trial-like rulemaking by federal agencies in two railway cases. In the first, nearly forgotten decision, United States v. Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corp., the Court held sua sponte that an agency was not required to use formal rulemaking, despite its significant historical provenance. That unpersuasive decision all but decided the second, better-known decision, United States v. Florida East Coast Railway, the following term. In response to both decisions, agencies abandoned formal rulemaking—one of only four broad categories of agency action—and policymakers …
Proportionality Lost? The Rise Of Enforcement-Based Equity In The Deportation System And Its Limitations, Jason A. Cade
Proportionality Lost? The Rise Of Enforcement-Based Equity In The Deportation System And Its Limitations, Jason A. Cade

The “green building” movement began in the United States during the 1990s. In its early stages, reformers focused on minimizing adverse environmental impacts from major public, institutional, and commercial buildings. Private-sector organizations developed voluntary standards to promote green building practices, the most prominent being LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). More recently, widespread interest in residential green building has developed. Several organizations having developed voluntary green home standards. A standard promulgated by the federal government, the Energy Star Certified Home, has achieved substantial market success during the past decade. This article describes and assesses the Energy Star Home and …
Chevron In The Circuit Courts, Kent H. Barnett, Christopher J. Walker
Chevron In The Circuit Courts, Kent H. Barnett, Christopher J. Walker
Scholarly Works
This Article presents findings from the most comprehensive empirical study to date on how the federal courts of appeals have applied Chevron deference—the doctrine under which courts defer to a federal agency’s reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous statute that it administers. Based on 1,558 agency interpretations the circuit courts reviewed from 2003 through 2013 (where they cited Chevron), we found that the circuit courts overall upheld 71% of interpretations and applied Chevron deference 77% of the time. But there was nearly a twenty-five-percentage-point difference in agency-win rates when the circuit courts applied Chevron deference than when they did not. Among …
Adjudicating Religious Sincerity, Nathan Chapman
Adjudicating Religious Sincerity, Nathan Chapman
Scholarly Works
Recent disputes about the “contraception mandate” under the Affordable Care Act and about the provision of goods and services for same-sex weddings have drawn attention to the law of religious accommodations. So far, however, one of the requirements of a religious accommodation claim has escaped sustained scholarly attention: a claimant must be sincere. Historically, scholars have contested this requirement on the ground that adjudicating religious sincerity requires government officials to delve too deeply into religious questions, something the Establishment Clause forbids. Until recently, however, the doctrine was fairly clear: though the government may not evaluate the objective accuracy or plausibility …

Even though the number of juveniles arrested, tried and detained has recently declined, there are still a large number of delinquency cases, children under supervision by state officials, and children living in state facilities for youth and adults. Additionally, any positive developments in juvenile justice have not been evenly experienced by all youth. Juveniles living in urban areas are more likely to have their cases formally processed in the juvenile justice system rather than informally resolved. Further, the reach of the justice system has a particularly disparate effect on minority youth who tend to live in heavily-policed urban areas.

Industry Lobbying And "Interest Blind" Access Norms At International Organizations, Melissa J. Durkee
Industry Lobbying And "Interest Blind" Access Norms At International Organizations, Melissa J. Durkee
Scholarly Works
The standard approach of many international organizations (IOs) to non-governmental associations makes no formal distinctions between nonprofit private sector groups, known as trade or industry associations, and public interest groups. Thus, most IOs offer accreditation and access to both kinds of group on equal terms, without differentiating between them. I call this approach “interest blind” and use this short essay to examine its origins and consequences. Specifically, the approach has resulted in robust participation in international governance by industry and trade lobbying groups, which can affect the quality of deliberation at IOs and of the information that international officials and …

According to the Washington Post, 991 people were shot to death by police officers in the United States during calendar year 2015, and 957 people were fatally shot in 2016. A disproportionate percentage of the citizens killed in these police-civilian encounters were black. Events in Ferguson, Missouri; Chicago, Illinois; Charlotte, North Carolina; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Staten Island, New York - to name but a few affected cities - have now exposed deep distrust between communities of color and law enforcement. Greater transparency is necessary to begin to heal this culture of distrust and to inform the debate going forward …

In writing our casebook, The Law of American Health Care, we started from scratch, rethinking the topics to include and themes around which to organize them. Like many health law professors, we were schooled in and continued to propound the traditional themes of cost, quality, access, and choice. While those concerns certainly pervade many areas of health care law, our casebook's overarching themes emphasize different issues, namely: federalism, individual rights, fiduciary relationships, the modem administrative state, and market regulation. These new themes, we believe, better capture the range of issues and topics essential for the new generation of health lawyers. …

Modern Psychological Studies
College can be a stressful time for many, especially those dealing with problems like stress, anxiety, and depression. While colleges and universities typically offer counseling services, many students who could benefit do not take advantage of them. Research suggests that animals may play an important role in some forms of treatment for conditions such as anxiety, stress, and depression. A recent trend on college campuses is to offer opportunities to interact with dogs and other animals as a way to relieve stress and help individuals deal with other psychological issues. In this paper, we discuss the current research regarding using …

Exploring The Function Of Exon 7 In Drosophila Cacophony In Relation To Als, Jasmine E. Ahrar
Exploring The Function Of Exon 7 In Drosophila Cacophony In Relation To Als, Jasmine E. Ahrar
University Honors Theses
Defects in the TAR DNA-binding protein named TDP-43 are known to be involved with many neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS. TBPH, a TDP-43 Drosophila orthologue is used to explore the specifics of those defects. This protein is known to have many cellular roles, one of them being a regulator for splicing. TBPH null flies have shown that the region coding for the voltage gated calcium channel cacophony is a potential target for splicing, directly producing a greater number of transcripts that lack exon 7. In this report, the phenotype of adult flies that lack exon 7 is explored. These mutants are …
A Biological Comparison Of Two Sites: An Ecological Approach Using Community Ecology Metrics Based On Insect Faunal Composition, Kennedy J. Martin
A Biological Comparison Of Two Sites: An Ecological Approach Using Community Ecology Metrics Based On Insect Faunal Composition, Kennedy J. Martin
University Honors Theses
Two natural sites in the Portland urban area, River View Natural Area (RVNA) and Powers Marine Park (PMP), were sampled to assess their insect faunal composition with the intention of determining whether the areas are sufficiently similar ecologically that they could potentially be managed as a single unit. The two areas were compared using community ecology metrics based on their respective invertebrate fauna. The results suggested that RVNA and PMP had statistically different ecological communities. The Shannon Diversity Index for PMP was 0.303, and 0.819 for RVNA. The Horn Index of Community Overlap suggested a 93.46% overlap based on these …

Using Cultural Relevancy To Promote African American Brain Health, Miya Walker
University Honors Theses
African Americans are disproportionately more likely than older whites to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (ADOD). Despite these disparities, there is difficulty in motivating African Americans to engage in activities suitable to maintaining cognitive health (walking, social engagement, physical activity). The Sharing History through Active Reminiscence and Photo-imagery (SHARP) walking program (Croff, PI) combines these proactive activities in a culturally relevant way to create a motivational force to preserve cognitive health. SHARP engaged 19 African Americans aged 55 and older on 72 themed, 1-mile walks over 6 months in Portland, Oregon’s historically Black neighborhoods. This study examines participant responses …
Making Makeup: A Recipe Book For All-Natural Cosmetics, Jessica Arlich
Making Makeup: A Recipe Book For All-Natural Cosmetics, Jessica Arlich
University Honors Theses
In the past five years, there has been increasing demand for organic consumables in the United States every year by mainstream culture. Also, with the prevalence of the Internet, people can find resources to make almost anything. Do-it-yourself culture is huge. The marriage of these two facts allowed me to explore my thesis topic.
The goal of my thesis project was to create a book of recipes for all-natural cosmetics, similar to a cookbook. I engaged in lots of research and experimentation to create my own recipes. I used modern layout with a humanist typeface and brush-script to emphasize the …
How Does The 12-Step Model Of Recovery Benefit And Complicate Harm Reduction Strategies For Substance Abusing Adolescent Youth?, Matthew Matteini
How Does The 12-Step Model Of Recovery Benefit And Complicate Harm Reduction Strategies For Substance Abusing Adolescent Youth?, Matthew Matteini
University Honors Theses
Alongside harm reduction strategies, the abstinence-based 12-step model of recovery has become an increasingly prominent means of addressing substance abuse among American adolescent youth. These two different models of recovery are commonly being implemented in tandem with one another as a means of treating substance abuse for adolescent youth. Despite the common occurrence of dual implementation, there has been limited research into the impact these modalities have upon one another. Using a narrative review, this study utilizes existing literature to highlight key means through which the 12-step model of recovery works as both an asset and a hindrance to harm …

Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise: Analyzing The Benefits Of Different Forms Of Exercise For Adults Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes, Mark A. Yakubovich
University Honors Theses
This paper explores multiple published articles that will consider the effects of aerobic and anaerobic exercise performed by adult individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It will also explore the benefits of combining both forms of exercise and how each compare in terms of glycemic control. This paper will specifically be looking at the benefits of exercise on type 2 diabetes mellitus. I acknowledge that a combination of both exercise and nutrition is optimal for individuals with type 2 diabetes, but this paper is solely looking at the effects of exercise. I will be analyzing the methods used in …
Implications Of Psychotherapy And Low-Dose Medication Following First-Episode Psychosis, Alyssa Woolley
Implications Of Psychotherapy And Low-Dose Medication Following First-Episode Psychosis, Alyssa Woolley
University Honors Theses
Schizophrenia, a mental disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thoughts and speech, is typically treated using antipsychotic medication and therapy. Randomized trials focusing on schizophrenia have provided evidence that early intervention, which entails talk therapy combined with low-dose antipsychotic medication directly following onset of psychosis, is most effective in treating symptoms. The literature review detailed in this paper is intended to help better understand the relationship between low-dosage antipsychotic medication, pair with regular psychotherapy, and how that relationship can help patients to adhere to treatment for long-term remission.
Lacking Legitimacy: Neoliberal Governance And The Erosion Of Local Democracy In The United States And Argentina, Adriane Ackerman
Lacking Legitimacy: Neoliberal Governance And The Erosion Of Local Democracy In The United States And Argentina, Adriane Ackerman
University Honors Theses
An extension of capitalism’s relentless growth, neoliberal globalization has characterized most of the policies and practices that have proliferated between nation-states since the late 1970's, producing a "flatter" world in which spheres of influence, both economically and politically, have become inextricably interdependent. Some prominent results of this interdependence include consolidation of wealth, extreme socioeconomic stratification, greater influence of money upon politics, and deepening ideological divide within the populace. Increased sharing of the roles and responsibilities of governing with the private sector, along with increased access to information and exposure to systemic nepotism, have together undermined the sovereignty and preeminence of …
Language In The Korean Workplace: An Analysis Of Hierarchical Language Use In The Drama Misaeng, Jessie Nicole Mcneill
Language In The Korean Workplace: An Analysis Of Hierarchical Language Use In The Drama Misaeng, Jessie Nicole Mcneill
University Honors Theses
The influences of Confucian and neo-Confucian values can be seen in contemporary Korean culture and language (Seth 2016). The Korean language is hierarchical, meaning that the language demonstrates a clear social hierarchy between speakers through the use of various determined linguistic techniques (Agha 1998). Native Korean speakers employ a combination of speech styles and levels, honorifics, politeness and humbling strategies to convey their reception of the hearer’s social location in the hierarchy (Choo 2006). The environment of the Korean workplace is shaped by these cultural values with very apparent social stratification by rank (Lee 2012). The emphasis on social stratification …

Women And The Wilderness: A Review Of Barriers To Participation, Current Coping Strategies, And Guidance For Future Programs, Naiyear Khajavei
University Honors Theses
This literature review discusses the obstacles that women face in participating in outdoor recreation, the ways in which they are currently navigating these obstacles, and discusses how the currently literature (and the gaps within it) can inform our future research and policy making. The obstacles women currently face in wilderness recreation surround gender roles and social expectations, lack of early skill-development and confidence, and a gendered geographic fear. Currently, women are navigating these obstacles by either conforming or rejecting gender roles in their participation, choosing to develop skills in female-only environments, and taking means to increase perceived safety such as …
The Role Of Divalent Metals In Dna Replication During Periods Of Oxidative Stress, Corinne Hutfilz
The Role Of Divalent Metals In Dna Replication During Periods Of Oxidative Stress, Corinne Hutfilz
University Honors Theses
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated through regular aerobic metabolism and iron-catalyzed degradation of hydrogen peroxide (Fridovich, 1995). ROS are known to induce single strand breaks (SSBs) in DNA via sugar or base modification (Lindahl, 1993), and double strand breaks (DSBs) can also occur when the replicative polymerase complex (replisome) polymerizes over oxidative lesions (Andrews et al., 2003), or when clustered oxidative lesions are misrepaired (Semenenko and Stewart, 2005; Semenenko et al., 2005). Intracellular ROS production has also been shown to increase after UV-induced and endogenous DNA damage (Rowe et al., 2008). All DNA lesions must be repaired for the …

Associations Between Willingness To Exert Cognitive Effort And Smoking Abstinence, Austin A. Phanouvong, Darby K. Dyar, Suzanne H. Mitchell
University Honors Theses
In decision-making tasks, individuals who prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, delayed rewards (delay discounting) are less likely to quit smoking. Indeed, decision-making tasks with delayed reward costs are sensitive to many aspects of substance use disorders. However, other reward costs might also be important. Our study focused on one of these other reward costs, which was cognitive effort (CE). 22 current smokers who were anticipating quitting in the near future were recruited to validate if more CE discounting predicted shorter abstinence times in reinforced smoking lapse period. Each participant had to be aged 18-45, and smoke 10-20 cigarettes daily. …
From Stem To Steam: The Neuroscience Behind The Movement Towards Arts Integration In K-12 Curricula, Kayla G. Townsley
From Stem To Steam: The Neuroscience Behind The Movement Towards Arts Integration In K-12 Curricula, Kayla G. Townsley
University Honors Theses
As a result of disparities in the educational system, numerous scholars and educators across disciplines currently support the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) movement for arts integration. An educational approach to learning focusing on guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking through interdisciplinary instruction, STEAM values both the proficiency of knowledge and understanding. Despite extant literature urging for this integration, the trend has yet to significantly influence federal or state standards for K-12 education in the United States.
This paper provides a brief and focused review of key theories and research from the fields of cognitive …
