"A Degree Is A Part Of The Puzzle, But Only A Piece.” Understanding How Employers Determine The Value Of Academic Credentials, Brenda Kaspari Jan 2017

"A Degree Is A Part Of The Puzzle, But Only A Piece.” Understanding How Employers Determine The Value Of Academic Credentials, Brenda Kaspari

Theses and Dissertations

With the skyrocketing costs of higher education and the increased scrutiny of how educational institutions prepare graduates for the workplace, this dissertation explored how the “outsiders,” or employers, view and determine the value of academic credentials. Using the premise of credentialism, this grounded theory, qualitative study addressed two major questions; first, how do employees evaluate academic credentials, and second, what factors are important to employers?

Through the interviews, it was discovered that there were gray areas when determining the value of a college credential. There were three critical findings. First, college degrees are a valuable credential, yet there are issues …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Negative Impact Of Falls On Health, Well-Being, And Survival Among Older Adults: An Examination Of Protective Psychosocial Mediators, Harpa Lind Jonsdottir Jan 2017

A Longitudinal Study Of The Negative Impact Of Falls On Health, Well-Being, And Survival Among Older Adults: An Examination Of Protective Psychosocial Mediators, Harpa Lind Jonsdottir

Theses and Dissertations

Falls can have detrimental effects on older adults’ physical and psychological health, and survival rates. However, there appears to be a protective psychosocial mediator that may lessen the negative impact of experiencing a fall on health and well-being. The psychosocial factors examined as mediators of the falls - health and well-being relationship in this study were dispositional optimism and perceived control. Participants were 232 community-dwelling older adults, age 68 or older. This study was linked to a longitudinal study including data collected in 2008 and 2010 (Grand Cities Healthy Aging Study (GCHAS). Measurements of dispositional optimism, perceived control, self-rated physical …

Perceptions Of Dress Code Compliance, Kristen Nicole Leighton Jan 2017

Perceptions Of Dress Code Compliance, Kristen Nicole Leighton

Theses and Dissertations

Recent media coverage of middle and high school dress code controversies has called into question the fairness of such regulations on students’ clothing. The current study investigated gender differences in reactions to dress code violations and how reactions varied based on the race of the student who violated the dress code. The current study also explored how individual differences in hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, and social dominance orientation influenced judgments about dress code violations. Judgments about dress code violations were not found to vary based on the gender of the participant or race of the target. Social dominance orientation, however, …

Theory And Application Development Of Electronic Structure Methods Involving Heavy Computation, Run Li Jan 2017

Theory And Application Development Of Electronic Structure Methods Involving Heavy Computation, Run Li

Theses and Dissertations

The propargyl radical, the most stable isomer of C3H3, is very important in combustion reactions. However, theoretical calculations have never been able to find a strong absorption around 242 nm as seen in experiments. In this study, we calculated the electronic energy levels of the propargyl radical using highly accurate multireference methods, including multireference configuration interaction singles and doubles method with triples and quadruples treated perturbatively [denoted as MRCISD(TQ)], as well as second and third order generalized Van Vleck perturbation theories (GVVPT2 and GVVPT3). Calculations indicate that this absorption can be solely attributed to a Franck-Condon-allowed transition from the ground …

Failure Analysis Of Rotating Equipment Using Vibration Studies And Signal Processing Techniques, Ashkan Nejadpak Jan 2017

Failure Analysis Of Rotating Equipment Using Vibration Studies And Signal Processing Techniques, Ashkan Nejadpak

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on failure analysis of rotating machines based on vibration analysis and signal processing techniques. The main objectives are: identifying machine’s condition, determining the faults specific response, creating methods to correct the faults, and investigating available statistical analysis methods for automatic fault detection and classification. In vibration analysis, the accelerometer data is analyzed in time and frequency domain which will determine the machine’s condition by identifying the characteristic frequencies of the faults. These fault frequencies are specific for each type of machine’s faults. Therefore, they are referred to as faults’ signatures. The most common faults of the rotating …

The Impact Of The 340b Drug Pricing Program On Post-Launch Drug Prices, Bryan Temples Miller Jan 2017

The Impact Of The 340b Drug Pricing Program On Post-Launch Drug Prices, Bryan Temples Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Government mandated drug-pricing policies are an understudied—but potentially significant—factor in the price of drugs. The 340B program is one of the more controversial government-mandated prescription drug discount programs. Proponents argue that the program helps health care systems cover the cost of care they provide for low-income patients. Critics argue that the program unfairly benefits certain health care systems by assuring them lower drug prices, drives consolidation and reduces competition in the health care market, and drives up the cost of drugs. Despite this last claim, there is very little evidence that the 340B program actually impacts post-launch drug prices (i.e., …

Residual Deficits Observed In Athletes Following Concussion: Combined Eeg And Cognitive Study, Tamanna Tabassum Khan Munia Jan 2017

Residual Deficits Observed In Athletes Following Concussion: Combined Eeg And Cognitive Study, Tamanna Tabassum Khan Munia

Theses and Dissertations

The neurocognitive sequelae of a sport-related concussion and its management are poorly defined. Emerging evidence suggests that the residual deficits can persist one year or more following a brain injury. Detecting and quantifying the residual deficits are vital in making a decision about the treatment plan and may prevent further damage. For example, improper return to play (RTP) decisions in sports such as football have proven to be associated with the further chance of recurring injury, long-term neurophysiological impairments, and worsening of brain functional activity.

The reliability of traditional cognitive assessment tools is debatable, and thus attention has turned to …

Stigma And Restoration Of Civil Rights To Felons, Kimberly Paige Pithey Jan 2017

Stigma And Restoration Of Civil Rights To Felons, Kimberly Paige Pithey

Theses and Dissertations

Millions of people in the United States are banned from basic civil rights including participation in voting, jury duty, applying for government assistance, and owning a firearm because they have had a felony conviction. There is limited research on attitudes regarding the restoration of civil rights to felons. This thesis uses Goffman’s theory of stigma to examine whether public support for the restoration of rights to felons is associated with knowledge of felony convictions and whether an individual knows someone with a felony conviction. This study used an online survey of college undergraduates (N = 362) to explore two hypotheses …

The Effect Of Perpetrator Remorse, Victim Gender, And Photographer On Victim Blame In A Case Of Nonconsensual Photograph Sharing, Katlin J. Rhyner Jan 2017

The Effect Of Perpetrator Remorse, Victim Gender, And Photographer On Victim Blame In A Case Of Nonconsensual Photograph Sharing, Katlin J. Rhyner

Theses and Dissertations

Emotional expression is often used as a way to determine a person’s intent for social situations. In a courtroom, when a perpetrator expresses (or fails to express) remorse, not only the perception of the perpetrator may be altered, but also the perception of the victim. This difference may especially be the case in a situation where the victim is viewed as having a high level of culpability for the crime, such as if the victim took the picture and sent it. Furthermore, the gender of the victim of the crime may influence how the victim is perceived, such that women …

Modification Methods For Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat) Performance In Simulating Runoff And Sediment Of Watersheds In Cold Regions, Bahareh Shoghli

Theses and Dissertations

Streamflow predication is an important task in water management studies. It is needed in the operation and optimization of water resources and flood control projects. The accuracy of these predictions has a great influence on the water resources management and decision making processes. Various models and tool packages have been developed for simulation and prediction of streamflow. Among them, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is one of the most widely used models, which was originally developed to predict the impacts of land management on water, sediment and agricultural chemical yield in large watershed simulations. Results of the SWAT …

Epigenetic Remodeling As A Mediator Of Environmental Toxicant Exposure In The Brain, Christopher David Walden Jan 2017

Epigenetic Remodeling As A Mediator Of Environmental Toxicant Exposure In The Brain, Christopher David Walden

Theses and Dissertations

Natural toxins and artificial toxicants are abundant throughout our environment and may play an integral role in remodeling our epigenome and in the development of neural diseases. Exposure to heavy metals and organic pollutants, such as DDT and its derivatives, have been linked to neural disease. Additionally, there are links between direct exposure, in both adults and children, to short-lived pesticides and neural diseases. While the link has been established, understanding the root cause has yet to be elucidated. One increasingly relevant field offering promise in achieving this goal is epigenetics. Epigenetic remodeling is one potential mechanism by which environmental …

The Missing Framework For Virtually Assisted Activities, Jacob Steffen, James Gaskin, Thomas Meservy, Jeffrey Jenkins Jan 2017

The Missing Framework For Virtually Assisted Activities, Jacob Steffen, James Gaskin, Thomas Meservy, Jeffrey Jenkins

Faculty Publications

Various frameworks and taxonomies exist that classify virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) by their attributes and technical specifications. However, no extant frameworks specifically classify the activities executed with VR and AR devices, which we refer to as virtually assisted activities (VAAs). In the context of past definitions and frameworks of VR and AR, we present a framework for VAAs that examines the underlying motivations for virtualizing some aspect of an activity. By so doing, VAAs are easily compared to similar non-virtualized activities done in physical reality, VR is better compared with AR, and potential benefits …

Liquidity In Retirement Savings Systems: An International Comparison, John Beshears, James J. Choi, Joshua Hurwitz, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2017

Liquidity In Retirement Savings Systems: An International Comparison, John Beshears, James J. Choi, Joshua Hurwitz, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

What is the socially optimal level of liquidity in a retirement savings system? Liquid retirement savings are desirable because liquidity enables agents to flexibly respond to preretirement events that raise the marginal utility of consumption, like income shocks.1 On the other hand, preretirement liquidity is undesirable when it leads to undersaving arising from, for example, planning mistakes or self- control problems.2

Towards Improving East Coast Fever (Ecf) Diagnosis: Validation Of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (Lamp) Assays For Rapid Detection Of Theileria Parva, The Causative Agent Of Ecf In Cattle, Moses Njahira Ndotono

All Master’s Theses

East Coast fever (ECF) is a serious tick-borne parasitic disease of cattle and is a major constraint to the livestock sector in east, central and southern Africa. ECF is caused by a protozoan parasite, Theileria parva, transmitted by the tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Several serological and molecular assays have been developed, for use in epidemiological studies, monitoring control programmes, and for research. Amongst the plethora of molecular assays for T. parva is a p104 gene nested-PCR (p104-nPCR) assay, a validated ‘gold-standard' PCR assay. However, p104-nPCR requires sophisticated equipment and 1-2 days to perform. Two simple, rapid molecular assays for T. parva, …

Towards A Relational Conceptualization Of The Right To Personal Autonomy, Yael Braudo-Bahat Jan 2017

Towards A Relational Conceptualization Of The Right To Personal Autonomy, Yael Braudo-Bahat

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

This Article lays the foundation for a relational conceptualization of the right to personal autonomy, where personal autonomy is perceived as a fluid and dynamic competency, which evolves and flourishes through one’s web of relationships. On its face, the more common, liberal conception of personal autonomy seems more fitting for the articulation of the right to personal autonomy, as most Western legal systems are based on liberal grounds. Indeed, several liberal legal scholars have addressed the right to personal autonomy and the state’s duty to promote it. Nonetheless, I show that the liberal conception of autonomy is limited in its …

"Lifting As We Climb": The American Council On Human Rights And The Quest For Civil Rights, Gregory S. Parks

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

The narrative of African Americans’ quest for racial equality and social justice in the Twentieth Century is typically construed in the context of main-line civil rights organizations—e.g., NAACP, SCLC, SNCC, and the like. However, for decades, black fraternal networks had been helping to lay the groundwork for the major civil rights campaigns that culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1938 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated created the National Non-Partisan Lobby on Civil and Democratic Rights (“NPC”), later renamed the National Non-Partisan Council on Public Affairs. It was the first full-time congressional lobby for minority group civil rights. …

A Family Is What You Make It? Legal Recognition And Regulation Of Multiple Parents, Haim Abraham Jan 2017

A Family Is What You Make It? Legal Recognition And Regulation Of Multiple Parents, Haim Abraham

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Multiparental family structures, in which there are more than two parents, are becoming increasingly common. Thus, they defy the social and legal conception of the nuclear family. Yet, despite the growing number of multiparental families, their legal status in most jurisdictions is not recognized, leaving various issues unaddressed and potentially risking the children’s best interests. This paper examines how the legislatures and courts of California, Canada, and the U.K. recognize and regulate multiparental families. It shows that the treatment of multiparental families varies from non-recognition of any status, through regulation of the multiparental family, to the recognition of the multiparental …

Amicus Brief In Jae Lee V. United States, Jenny M. Roberts

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

This amicus brief was filed on behalf of the Immigrant Defense Project, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild in support of the petitioner in Jae Lee v United States, No. 16-327. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Lee, holding that Lee met his burden of showing that his attorney's erroneous advice about deportation prejudiced him. The Court found that it would not have been irrational for Lee to reject the plea he accepted and go to trial, despite the fact that he was "almost certain" to lose at trial. …
