Towards Improving East Coast Fever (Ecf) Diagnosis: Validation Of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (Lamp) Assays For Rapid Detection Of Theileria Parva, The Causative Agent Of Ecf In Cattle, Moses Njahira Ndotono

All Master’s Theses

East Coast fever (ECF) is a serious tick-borne parasitic disease of cattle and is a major constraint to the livestock sector in east, central and southern Africa. ECF is caused by a protozoan parasite, Theileria parva, transmitted by the tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Several serological and molecular assays have been developed, for use in epidemiological studies, monitoring control programmes, and for research. Amongst the plethora of molecular assays for T. parva is a p104 gene nested-PCR (p104-nPCR) assay, a validated ‘gold-standard' PCR assay. However, p104-nPCR requires sophisticated equipment and 1-2 days to perform. Two simple, rapid molecular assays for T. parva, …

Species Composition And Pollinator Efficiency Of Ocimum Kilimandscharicum Flower Visitors Along Kakamega Forest Ecosystem, Hellen Mandela Kutwa Jan 2017

Species Composition And Pollinator Efficiency Of Ocimum Kilimandscharicum Flower Visitors Along Kakamega Forest Ecosystem, Hellen Mandela Kutwa

All Master’s Theses

Pollination is an important ecosystem service in the maintenance of biodiversity and most importantly in food production as it brings about fruit formation and seed production. Pollination is, however, on the decline due to several factors including habitat loss, exotic pest invasions, pollution, overharvesting, and land use changes. The Ocimum kilimandscharicum plant is known for its medicinal values and has gained more attention locally and internationally for its commercial use in production of pharmaceutical products. This study analyzed the flower visitors' activity of Ocimum kilimandscharicum in Kakamega forest. Specifically, the study sought to: (i) assess the diversity and abundance of …

Investing In Youth Work: Learning From Complexity, Kari Denissen Cunnien

Journal of Youth Development

This article proposes key elements for a system of support for youth workers to develop their professional skills and capabilities by using a human development approach. The article argues that narrowed and bureaucratic approaches to professional development can ignore the complex dynamics of human development that support engaged learning and continuous growth and improvement. The author suggests a more dynamic system where professional development in grounded by practice; employs reflection, mentorship and coaching; and supports healthy organizational culture to foster high quality youth work.

Towards A Relational Conceptualization Of The Right To Personal Autonomy, Yael Braudo-Bahat Jan 2017

Towards A Relational Conceptualization Of The Right To Personal Autonomy, Yael Braudo-Bahat

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

This Article lays the foundation for a relational conceptualization of the right to personal autonomy, where personal autonomy is perceived as a fluid and dynamic competency, which evolves and flourishes through one’s web of relationships. On its face, the more common, liberal conception of personal autonomy seems more fitting for the articulation of the right to personal autonomy, as most Western legal systems are based on liberal grounds. Indeed, several liberal legal scholars have addressed the right to personal autonomy and the state’s duty to promote it. Nonetheless, I show that the liberal conception of autonomy is limited in its …

"Lifting As We Climb": The American Council On Human Rights And The Quest For Civil Rights, Gregory S. Parks

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

The narrative of African Americans’ quest for racial equality and social justice in the Twentieth Century is typically construed in the context of main-line civil rights organizations—e.g., NAACP, SCLC, SNCC, and the like. However, for decades, black fraternal networks had been helping to lay the groundwork for the major civil rights campaigns that culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1938 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated created the National Non-Partisan Lobby on Civil and Democratic Rights (“NPC”), later renamed the National Non-Partisan Council on Public Affairs. It was the first full-time congressional lobby for minority group civil rights. …

A Family Is What You Make It? Legal Recognition And Regulation Of Multiple Parents, Haim Abraham Jan 2017

A Family Is What You Make It? Legal Recognition And Regulation Of Multiple Parents, Haim Abraham

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Multiparental family structures, in which there are more than two parents, are becoming increasingly common. Thus, they defy the social and legal conception of the nuclear family. Yet, despite the growing number of multiparental families, their legal status in most jurisdictions is not recognized, leaving various issues unaddressed and potentially risking the children’s best interests. This paper examines how the legislatures and courts of California, Canada, and the U.K. recognize and regulate multiparental families. It shows that the treatment of multiparental families varies from non-recognition of any status, through regulation of the multiparental family, to the recognition of the multiparental …

Amicus Brief In Jae Lee V. United States, Jenny M. Roberts

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

This amicus brief was filed on behalf of the Immigrant Defense Project, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild in support of the petitioner in Jae Lee v United States, No. 16-327. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Lee, holding that Lee met his burden of showing that his attorney's erroneous advice about deportation prejudiced him. The Court found that it would not have been irrational for Lee to reject the plea he accepted and go to trial, despite the fact that he was "almost certain" to lose at trial. …

Department of Medicine

Background:The vector-borne cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in several regions of Pakistan mainly affecting poor populations. Host genetic factors, particularly SLC11A1 (solute carrier transmembrane protein) within macrophages, play a crucial role in disease pathology and susceptibility. Association of SLC11A1 with cutaneous leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease, is not well established. Inconsistencies have been observed within different populations worldwide with respect to genetic susceptibility. This study was designed to investigate genetic variation(s) in SLC11A1 and to assess possible association with cutaneous leishmaniasis in Pakistan.

Results: Eight polymorphisms (rs2276631, rs3731864, rs2290708, rs2695342, rs201565523, rs17215556, rs17235409, rs17235416) were genotyped across SLC11A1 in …

Lessons From "The Fleet": Improving Organizational Leadership Based On Prairie Lakes Church Practices Through Fictional Narrative, Christopher Huling

Honors Program Theses

Prairie Lakes Church (PLC) is a religious institution with a rich history within the Cedar Valley. The church’s origins date back to 1854, only one year after Cedar Falls was incorporated. Throughout the years there have been many changes to the organization, including their name, location, and the population served. Many of the more radical changes have occurred during the last decade. In 2006, Prairie Lakes Church had a single location with roughly twenty staff and a congregation of around 1,000 individuals. Since then, the church’s presence has expanded to five other communities across Iowa. Over sixty people are now …

Cabin Depressurization As A Hijacking Mitigation Tactic: A Consumer Perceptions Study, Rian Mehta, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, Paul Buza

Publications

The security of a commercial airline flight is the primary concern of all parties involved in the aviation industry. The policies and strategies of dealing with terrorist threats have evolved since the attacks of September 11, 2001. The current policy requires that the cockpit door be locked so that the hijackers have no access to the flight controls. A new method has been discussed whereby the pilots depressurize the cabin so as to eliminate the hijacking threat since all the cabin crew and passengers will be rendered unconscious. While there is a risk of possible negative impact on brain cells …

Human Energy Maximization In A Customized Leadership Program, Robin A. Roberts, Matthew P. Earnhardt, Rene Herron

Publications

Sustainability and thriving are key terms that are driving how energy sources, such as solar, wind, water, and geothermal, generate survivability in the era of globalization. Rarely are those terms used to define human energy expenditures; however, human energy is the most readily available energy source for it serves as a primary catalyst in the fueling or degrading of the sustainability and survival of all other resources. Additionally, humans live, learn, and earn in spaces where they expend energy by mere existence. Most humans are unaware of the impact their personal energy has on the utility and fortitude of the …

Health Habits, Coping Behaviors, And Perceived Social Support In Primary Care Physicians As A Function Of Level Of Burnout, Samantha A. Welsh

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Primary care physicians (PCPs) are vital to the healthcare of our nation and serve as a critical point of entry into the healthcare system. PCPs must successfully balance competing demands; however, balancing all of these demands can lead PCPs to experience symptoms of burnout. Physician burnout is a serious problem among physicians and can have a significant impact on the medical community. Burnout threatens not only the health of physicians, but also the healthcare received by patients. Due to the profound effects that burnout can potentially have on physicians and on the care that they deliver to their patients, it …

Recovery Knowledge And Recovery-Oriented Clinical Decision-Making Among Mental Health Professionals Working With Clients With Serious Mental Illnesses, Kendrick Peer Mugnier Jan 2017

Recovery Knowledge And Recovery-Oriented Clinical Decision-Making Among Mental Health Professionals Working With Clients With Serious Mental Illnesses, Kendrick Peer Mugnier

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Recovery principles have become increasingly present in research literature and in reforms of healthcare systems in the last four decades. These principles grew out of client advocacy and research that emphasized a need for increased client autonomy, respect, holistic and individualized care, empowerment, personal responsibility, community integration, and peer support. Recovery principles are particularly important for mental health practitioners who work with individuals with serious mental illnesses. The present study used the Recovery Knowledge Inventory (RKI) to assess knowledge and attitudes of recovery principles and determine whether that is associated with the degree of recovery-oriented clinical practices that mental health …

The Ability Of The Brain To Adapt To Temporal Lobe Epilepsy In The Context Of Hemispheric Dominance For Language, Kathleen A. Breslin Jan 2017

The Ability Of The Brain To Adapt To Temporal Lobe Epilepsy In The Context Of Hemispheric Dominance For Language, Kathleen A. Breslin

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The potential for the brain to adapt to insult or injury is demonstrated in the preservation of language functions when there is damage to the language areas (Lidzba, Staudt, Wilke, Grodd, & Krageloh-Mann, 2006). Although atypical hemispheric dominance for language is rare in the general population, rates are higher in epilepsy patients (Araujo, Schwarze, & White, 2009; Drane et al., 2012; Lidzba, Staudt, Wilke, Grodd, et al., 2006; Powell, Kemp, & Garcia-Finana, 2012; Spreer et al., 2001). Understanding this relationship and factors affecting atypicality is important for neuropsychologists in making treatment recommendations and for pre-operative planning. This study sought to …
