An Exploration Of How Agency And Socio-Cultural Milieu Support Greater Or Lesser Controlled Gambling And Recovery From Gambling Addiction, Edward Iain Pyle
An Exploration Of How Agency And Socio-Cultural Milieu Support Greater Or Lesser Controlled Gambling And Recovery From Gambling Addiction, Edward Iain Pyle
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Most gamblers never experience addiction and the majority of those who do eventually recover. This thesis investigates how most maintain control over their gambling and how the majority of those who do experience gambling addiction regain control. Findings are based on 25 qualitative semi-structured interviews with participants who fit one of three ideal-type groups: (i) gamblers who have never experienced addiction; (ii) gamblers who have regained control after experience of gambling addiction; and (iii) gamblers experiencing addiction at time of interview. Participants were recruited who had never engaged in formal treatment because existing research suggests most who experience gambling addiction …
Transitioning Beyond Undergraduate Hospitality Education; A Dialogic Analysis Of Final Year Hospitality Students’ Narratives Of Employability, Cat Hine
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Employability has become a key consideration for graduates, and society. Increasingly the trajectory of individuals at age 18 involves the completion of an undergraduate level degree qualification. This thesis presents a sociologically grounded study into the dialogic construction of employability in final year hospitality students and recent hospitality graduates. Drawing on a nationwide sample of UK based hospitality graduates, as they transition beyond undergraduate level higher education, a new understanding of the way in which employability is narrated and individuals position themselves within the competitive context surrounding employability, has been uncovered. The study therefore evaluates the way in which employability …
Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston
Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
In the UK, boom periods of construction combined with typical building styles of the day, have resulted in a large stock of ageing office buildings at risk of structural vacancy and obsolescence. Despite their lack of insulation, high air infiltration, and solar gain, many such buildings from the 1960s-1970s are still in use today. Moreover, with UK buildings replaced at a rate of less than 2% a year, the majority of today's buildings will still be in use in 2050. Due to the impact of the facade on such aspects as thermal performance and aesthetics, façade retrofit is seen as …

This study investigates Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services related to competitive employment closure among non-Hispanic Blacks (NHB), non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), and Hispanics with HIV/AIDS and substance use disorder (SUD). Data of 4150 was extracted from the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA-911) database. Descriptive statistics and multi-variate analysis showed consumers who received SSI and Medicare were less likely to be employed than those who did not, and, NHW who received rehabilitation counseling and guidance benefited the most compared to NHB who did not. Rehabilitation counselors can assist minorities with HIV/AIDS and SUD secure employment given the positive effects of employment for this population. …
Fisheries, Marine Conservation, Marine Renewable Energy And Displacement: A Fresh Approach, Maria Shauna Campbell
Fisheries, Marine Conservation, Marine Renewable Energy And Displacement: A Fresh Approach, Maria Shauna Campbell
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Fishers are among the biggest commercial resource users in the marine environment. In order to meet international, national and local policies, the UK has to designate a suite of marine protected areas (MPAs) and reach marine renewable energy (MRE) targets. Inevitably, there will be conflict between these two industries and marine conservation. This study uses a multi-disciplinary approach to examine evaluate the suitability of various sources of data, which could be used to detect, assess, and ultimately predict, fishing effort displacement within the different sectors of the > 15 m fleet in the South West of the UK. Gear-specific Vessel Monitoring …
Characterising Futile Autophagosome Based Toxicity And Its Implications In Disease, Robert William Button
Characterising Futile Autophagosome Based Toxicity And Its Implications In Disease, Robert William Button
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Macroautophagy (‘autophagy’ hereafter) mediates the capture of aberrant cytoplasmic material into vesicles called autophagosomes, which then shuttle to lysosomes for degradation. Autophagy is implicated in numerous diseases, largely in a pro-survival role. However, autophagy has also been suggested as a form of programmed cell death (PCD), from cases of dying cells showing autophagosome accumulations. Debate occurs between whether these vesicles drive the lethality, or are instead a failing rescue attempt. This study aimed to provide clarity on this issue. Via the use of chemical and genetic strategies of inducing autophagosome accumulations, we found combining stimulators of autophagosome biogenesis with lysosomal …
Next Generation Sequencing-Based Genotyping Of Human Blood Groups: Fy, Jk And Abo Genes, Malik Abdullah Altayar
Next Generation Sequencing-Based Genotyping Of Human Blood Groups: Fy, Jk And Abo Genes, Malik Abdullah Altayar
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Serological discrepancies in matching blood group antigens between donors and patients for blood transfusion may lead to alloimmunisation, especially in multiply transfused patients. Blood group genotyping (BGG) has contributed in reducing this issue. ABO, Fy and Jk antigens are among those to be causative for alloimmunisation through transfusion or pregnancy. The number of alleles of these clinically significant blood groups is ever increasing. Currently, all commercially available high-throughput BGG platforms are only based on pre-defined polymorphisms. Consequently, novel or rare alleles that might have clinical significance are not identified. Next generation sequencing (NGS) circumvents this issue by providing high-throughput comprehensive …
Factors Affecting Food Intake And The Role Of Nutrition Education In The Understanding And Implementation Of Healthy Dietary Habits In Saudi Adolescent Girls, Eman Alamri

Changing Flood Frequency In Scotland: Implications For Channel Geomorphology, Ecology And Management, Fiona Hilary Thompson
Changing Flood Frequency In Scotland: Implications For Channel Geomorphology, Ecology And Management, Fiona Hilary Thompson
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The effect of climate on the fluvial system has long been investigated due the significant impact it can have on a river’s hydrological regime and fluvial processes. In recent years this interest has increased as global changes in climate are expected to bring more frequent high magnitude flood events globally and to North West Europe in particular. Despite the knowledge that the frequency and magnitude of floods is to increase, less is known about the geomorphological implications of this for river channels and where channel instability is likely to occur at both the river network and national scale. This is …
Composite Materials Filled With Ferromagnetic Microwire Inclusions Demonstrating Microwave Response To Temperature And Tensile Stress, Vlad Zamorovskii
Composite Materials Filled With Ferromagnetic Microwire Inclusions Demonstrating Microwave Response To Temperature And Tensile Stress, Vlad Zamorovskii
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Amorphous and polycrystalline microwires cast from ferromagnetic Fe-based or Co-based alloys in glass envelope demonstrate unique magneto-anisotropic and high frequency impedance properties that make them very attractive for sensor applications. Magnetic anisotropies of different types result from the inverse magnetostriction effect (positive or negative) at the interface between the glass shell and the metal core, in the presence of the residual stresses induced during the Taylor-Ulitovski casting method. Therefore, the glass shell is not just isolation, but also is one of most important factors that defines the physical properties of microwires. In particular, magnetic anisotropy allows high frequency impedance to …
Dogs And Domesticity Reading The Dog In Victorian British Visual Culture, Amy Robson
Dogs And Domesticity Reading The Dog In Victorian British Visual Culture, Amy Robson
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The central aim of this thesis is to critically examine the values associated with dogs in Victorian British art and visual culture. It studies the redefining and restructuring of the domestic dog as it was conceptualized in visual culture and the art market. It proposes that the dog was strongly associated with social values and moral debates which often occurred within a visual arena, including exhibitions, illustrated newspapers, and prints. Consequently, visual representations of the dog can be seen as an important means through which to study Victorian culture and society. Historians have agreed that the Victorian period was a …

How Do Social Work Students Develop Their Professional Identity?, Julia Wheeler
How Do Social Work Students Develop Their Professional Identity?, Julia Wheeler
Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
Professional socialisation is a key aspect of social work pre-qualifying training and the final practice placement has long been viewed as one of the most crucial elements of social work training, in enabling students to transfer learning on the course into practice (Parker, 2007). Whilst there has been substantial research into how students develop their skills in social work education, very few studies have focused upon the student’s development of professional identity and the process of professional socialisation (Valutis, Rubin and Bell, 2012). This study explores this gap, particularly the impact of the placement supervisor and agency context upon the …

Synergism Of Quercetin And Sodium Butyrate For Controlling Growth Of Glioblastoma, Matthew Alan Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), or simply glioblastoma, is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor, with a prevalence of approximately 20,000 new cases per year in the United States and a 3-year survival rate of just 2%. Quercetin (QCT) is a dietary flavonoid that can be found in common foods such as red kidney beans, cilantro, and onions. Despite little evidence showing any benefits through dietary intake of QCT, various studies show its promising anti-cancer results in vitro. In glioblastoma, QCT is able to cause significant amounts of apoptosis through a variety of mechanisms. These include activation of caspase-9 and …
Engendering Ethics Through Practice In The Project-Based Business Communciation Course, Jonathan H. Jackson
Engendering Ethics Through Practice In The Project-Based Business Communciation Course, Jonathan H. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Business related degrees perennially make up roughly 20% of all college degrees awarded. At the same time, business ethics continues to be a much-discussed problem. I capitalize on the close connection between communication and ethics in order to offer a partial solution to the problem in the form of a project-based business communication class. After establishing a complementary view of business ethics, I go on to suggest the ethical focus for the project-based communication class. I then argue for the special suitability of business communication for such an approach, after which I go on to discuss the work of Wittgenstein …
Impact Of Medicare Reimbursement Policy Change On The Utilization, Risks, And Costs Associated With Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents In Cancer Patients With Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia, Minghui Li
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are biological drugs used to stimulate the production of red blood cells. ESAs are commonly prescribed for cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with low levels of hemoglobin. Due to the increasing safety concerns, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Medicare reimbursement policy change for ESAs in cancer patients to regulate the utilization of ESAs. For chemotherapy-induced anemia, when patients had solid tumors, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, or lymphocytic leukemia, ESA treatment is reimbursable by CMS only when the hemoglobin level is < 10g/dL.

Theses and Dissertations
Aberrant glycosylation takes place during the onset of cancer and throughout the progression of the disease allowing certain glycans to serve as biomarkers1. Boronic acid functionalized synthetic lectins (SLs) have been shown to bind selectively and crossreactively to certain glycoproteins through covalent yet reversible interactions between the boronic acids and 1,2- or 1,3-diols found on saccharides2. This project focuses on 1) data acquisition optimization of an existing SL array; 2) the identification, isolation, and characterization of new SLs that interact with proteins and glycoproteins targeting the prostate and prostate cancer; and 3) the utilization of new SLs in cross-reactive sensor …
Hope And Social Support: What Types Of Parent, Peer, And Teacher Support Matter To Early Adolescent Females And Males?, Kristin Otis
Hope And Social Support: What Types Of Parent, Peer, And Teacher Support Matter To Early Adolescent Females And Males?, Kristin Otis
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, researchers in psychology have paid increased attention to identifying psychological qualities in individuals that indicate positive mental health and flourishing. Hope has been proposed to be one of these qualities (Day, Hanson, Maltby, Proctor, & Wood, 2010; Marques, & Lopez, 2014). The majority of the hope literature has concentrated on the outcomes of differing levels of hope, but has not thoroughly examined the antecedents of hope differences. The current study provides a unique investigation of hope that looks at hypothesized antecedents of positive hope development in adolescents. For example, this study looks at the relationships among …
The Underside Of Power: Reading The Fantastic In The Works Of The Chilean Writer José Donoso, Andrew Mark Corley
The Underside Of Power: Reading The Fantastic In The Works Of The Chilean Writer José Donoso, Andrew Mark Corley
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the fantastic in the work of the Chilean author José Donoso (1924-1996). My thesis is that Donoso’s invocation of the fantastic in these narratives, subverts social constructs and power structures, specifically those associated with identity and sexuality. Via textual analysis, I argue that narratives such as “Santelices” (1956), El obsceno pájaro de la noche (1970), El jardín de al lado (1981), Naturaleza muerta con cachimba (1990), El lugar sin límites (1971), and Lagartija sin cola (2007) invite us to rethink how we see ourselves as we interact with his characters, often portrayed as tormented souls in hellish …

Racism can be understood as a system of dominance and power designed to uphold the racially privileged of society. One can be exposed to racism through various mechanisms including the Internet and social media. Evidence indicates that exposure to racism is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes as well as unhealthy behaviors. Current literature studying the effects of racism focus primarily on experienced or perceived racism. Furthermore, the geographic influence of racism on health at the county level and across levels of rurality is currently unknown. The purpose of this study was twofold; 1.) To explore the geographic …
The Impact Of Autoimmune Disease On Breast Cancer Survival, Samantha Truman
The Impact Of Autoimmune Disease On Breast Cancer Survival, Samantha Truman
Theses and Dissertations
Background Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in developed countries, while autoimmune disease effects approximately 10 million people in the United States, of which approximately 80% are female. Both diseases are associated with hormonal risk factors and are related to the divergent effects of the cellular and humoral immunity that is associated with the T-helper 1 and T-helper 2 immune response. To investigate the potential implications that autoimmune disease may have on breast cancer-specific mortality, we have conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer between January 1, …
Muscle Inflammatory Signaling Regulates Eccentric Contraction-Induced Protein Synthesis During Cancer Cachexia, Justin Perry Hardee
Muscle Inflammatory Signaling Regulates Eccentric Contraction-Induced Protein Synthesis During Cancer Cachexia, Justin Perry Hardee
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer-related cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome that involves the unintentional loss of skeletal muscle mass that cannot be reversed by standard nutritional intervention. Skeletal muscle mass depletion directly impacts patient survival and life quality, and therefore treatments that preserve muscle mass and function may have significant implications for cancer patient treatment and survival. Systemic and muscle inflammation has been implicated in the regulation of skeletal muscle homeostasis, and the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and muscle gp130 receptor signaling have established roles in cancer-induced muscle wasting. Resistance exercise is a nonpharmacological treatment that can improve physical function and metabolic health in …
