The Soundscape Of The St. Johns River And Its Potential Impacts On The Habitat Use Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins, Carissa Deeann King Jan 2017

The Soundscape Of The St. Johns River And Its Potential Impacts On The Habitat Use Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins, Carissa Deeann King

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The development of effective management plans for animal populations relies on an understanding of how the population is utilizing the habitat as well as the identification of any critical habitat areas. The St. Johns River (SJR), an urban estuary with a high level of anthropogenic disturbance, is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). In chapter one, SJR dolphin habitat use patterns, the factors that influenced these patterns, and the critical habitat areas were identified. Significant associations were found in most pair-wise comparisons between season, behavioral state, group size, water depth, and location, indicating that …

Impact Of Chronic Nitrogen Loading On Greenhouse Gas Fluxes In Coastal Wetlands, Katelyn Ann Szura Jan 2017

Impact Of Chronic Nitrogen Loading On Greenhouse Gas Fluxes In Coastal Wetlands, Katelyn Ann Szura

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal wetlands are valuable ecosystems that historically have not been protected and have been lost at rapid rates. Recently, they have gained attention for their potential role in climate change mitigation given that they have the ability to sequester and store large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). While other ecosystems can sequester and store carbon as well, salt marshes have the unique ability to store vast amounts of carbon while emitting relatively negligible amounts of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These are additional greenhouse gases (GHGs) that can be emitted from ecosystems, particularly CH4 …

Perspectives On Emerging Monitoring Technologies: Understanding Factors That Affect Adoption, Nelle D'Aversa Jan 2017

Perspectives On Emerging Monitoring Technologies: Understanding Factors That Affect Adoption, Nelle D'Aversa

Open Access Master's Theses

There are numerous technological acceptance and adoption theories that seek to explain how, why, and at what rate new technologies diffuse through systems over time. While the models can be used to explain why users adopt technologies, they do so in a general way and few, if any, studies have addressed the factors that affect monitoring technology adoption in coastal management. This study explores coastal managers’ and water quality monitors’ perspectives on water quality monitoring technology using various technology acceptance and adoption theories as a theoretical framework to better understand the factors that affect water quality monitoring technology adoption in …

The Impact Of Terrorism On Commercial Office Real Estate In Manhattan, Madeline M. O'Donnell Jan 2017

The Impact Of Terrorism On Commercial Office Real Estate In Manhattan, Madeline M. O'Donnell

Honors Program Theses

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks (“9/11”) caused major loss of human life, financial resources, and infrastructure. Within hours, over 30 million square feet of real estate in Downtown Manhattan was lost, creating an unprecedented change in supply and demand for real estate in the area. Hundreds of companies were directly affected by the loss of their offices and business fixtures, and were forced to quickly develop plans for how and where to resume work (“A Look at Former World Trade Center Tenants,” 2002). Property owners – many of whom owned the then damaged or nonexistent buildings as ground leases …

The Business Of Fraud, Jessica Marie Berkshire Jan 2017

The Business Of Fraud, Jessica Marie Berkshire

Honors Program Theses

This paper will focus on fraud within companies in order to discover overarching themes of why, when, and where corporate fraud occurs. Fraud has significant financial, economic, and social implications that negatively impact a company’s business standing. Research will be based on recent frauds that have been tried through the United States Attorney’s office. Correlations will be drawn regarding the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission’s (COSO) framework, which is a foundation for companies who want to improve their internal controls. Based on the comparisons between the COSO framework and recent fraud activity, individual COSO principles can be …

Accommodating Invisible Illnesses And Disabilities In The Workplace, Elizabeth Simmons Jan 2017

Accommodating Invisible Illnesses And Disabilities In The Workplace, Elizabeth Simmons

Honors Program Theses

As our society evolves and becomes more accepting of people impacted by disabilities, we need to work to understand how to best accommodate those disabilities in the workplace. If employees and supervisors were trained on the importance of accommodating disabilities and the potential legal risk associated with a lack of accommodation, I believe they would be more open to implementing those accommodations. This research has taught me the value of how you can never understand what every person is going through. Each individual may have different needs, but it is the duty of HR professionals to attempt to create a …

Top Tens In 2015: Patent, Trademark, Copyright And Trade Secret Cases, Stephen Mcjohn Jan 2017

Top Tens In 2015: Patent, Trademark, Copyright And Trade Secret Cases, Stephen Mcjohn

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The Supreme Court significantly affected the dynamics of patent litigation, holding that patent claim interpretation was not always reviewed de novo and that good faith belief that a patent was invalid was not a defense to infringement. The Federal Circuit potentially changed the approach to patent claim interpretation, holding that claims could be interpreted in light of the written description of the invention, even where the claim was not ambiguous. The Federal Circuit also addressed inducement of patent infringement, holding that it was not inducement to suggest consulting a physician who would likely prescribe an infringing treatment. The Federal Circuit …

Got Bacon?: The Use Of A Bioethics Advisory Board In Assessing The Future Of Transgenic Animal Technology, Heath R. Ingram

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

This article assesses the current state of the transgenic modification of animals and the law. It provides an introduction to the science behind transgenics as well as examples of transgenic livestock. This article discusses past federal level Ethics Advisory Boards, how these boards have impacted the development of controversial sciences, and how a new board can advance the use of transgenics. Bioethical arguments for and against the use of transgenics are evaluated. Finally, the article demonstrates how, if properly executed, an Ethics Advisory Board can help shape the national discourse on transgenics and provide a reasoned way forward for this …

Student-Athlete Perception Of Coaching Leadership Behaviors’ Influence On Mental Health Symptoms Associated With Anxiety, Depression, Suicidality, And Substance Abuse, Joan E. Thurston Jan 2017

Student-Athlete Perception Of Coaching Leadership Behaviors’ Influence On Mental Health Symptoms Associated With Anxiety, Depression, Suicidality, And Substance Abuse, Joan E. Thurston

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Student-athletes are viewed as the epitome of health due to their physical appearance and talent set; however, it is their psychological health that needs significant attention (Etzel, 2006). Psychosocial stressors such as the pressures and demands of being a student and athlete as well as the demands and expectations of the coach have significant impact on the student-athlete’s mental health and well-being (Beauchemin, 2014; Cleary et al., 2011; Lafrenière et al., 2011; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003; Watson, 2005). The purpose of this research is to investigate any correlation between student-athletes’ perceptions of coaching leadership behaviors and the symptoms associated …

Increasing Student Interactions With Learning Objectives, Emily Kaye Faulconer Jan 2017

Increasing Student Interactions With Learning Objectives, Emily Kaye Faulconer

Publications

As educators, we recognize the importance of strong student learning objectives. We also know that students benefit by being well informed of expectations. Existing literature offers little guidance in methods and teaching strategies to apply in exposing students to their learning objectives. In this article, we discuss the use of specific teaching strategies to increase student interactions with the learning objectives. Student opinions regarding learning objectives were measured using an end-of-course Likert survey. Although no statistically significant changes in student opinions were detected in this study, a future study will investigate the influence of these targeted strategies on content mastery. …

Characterization Of The Mechanism Of Drug-Drug Interactions From Pubmed Using Mesh Terms, Yin Lu, Bryan Figler, Hong Huang, Yi-Cheng Tu, Ju Wang, Feng Cheng

School of Information Faculty Publications

Identifying drug-drug interaction (DDI) is an important topic for the development of safe pharmaceutical drugs and for the optimization of multidrug regimens for complex diseases such as cancer and HIV. There have been about 150,000 publications on DDIs in PubMed, which is a great resource for DDI studies. In this paper, we introduced an automatic computational method for the systematic analysis of the mechanism of DDIs using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms from PubMed literature. MeSH term is a controlled vocabulary thesaurus developed by the National Library of Medicine for indexing and annotating articles. Our method can effectively identify DDI-relevant …

Murder, Miscarriage, And Women’S Choice: Prudence In The Colorado Personhood Debate, Calvin Coker Jan 2017

Murder, Miscarriage, And Women’S Choice: Prudence In The Colorado Personhood Debate, Calvin Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article analyzes texts circulated in the 2014 debate over Colorado’s Amendment 67, the so-called Personhood Amendment, to demonstrate that value claims within the abortion debate are subordinated in favor of discussing the potential legal and philosophical implications of granting fetuses personhood. Using prudence, Robert Hariman’s (1991) framework for understanding political action, as a theoretical lens, I argue the personhood debate offers scholars an opportunity to identify and evaluate competing value claims of and in relation to potential impacts of the amendment. Prudence offers a compelling area for political communication and rhetorical scholars to expand and develop in light of …

Information Technology Approaches To Forest Management, Mary Snow, Richard Snow Jan 2017

Information Technology Approaches To Forest Management, Mary Snow, Richard Snow

Publications

The majority of the world’s forests occur where there is a dry season long enough to affect a seasonal change in the forest community. The seasonal forest may include evergreen, semi-deciduous, deciduous trees, or some combination of these. Local differences in soil or other site characteristics often determine which community persists. Since the seasonal forests exist where there is seasonal precipitation, the character of the forest is closely associated with the length of the rainy season. As the length of the rainy season decreases, the density of the canopy decreases. If the global climate system warms and prolonged drought gives …

Inside Sales Force And Gender: Mediating Effects Of Intrinsic Motivation On Sales Controls And Performance, Anne Gottfried, Scott Ambrose, Richard Plank

Publications

Business-to-business sales organizations are experiencing inside sales growth as well as increased importance and utilization of their inside sales people. This dynamic role change towards inside sales is resulting in organizations re-thinking their sales control structure. To fill this gap, data was collected from 183 inside sales professionals representing a variety of industries. Utilizing Partial Least Square Analysis (PLS), this study analyzed the influences of gender on the relationship between sales controls and job performance to include measuring effects of intrinsic motivation, both challenge seeking and task enjoyment, on the model relationships. Findings suggest that differences do exist between males …

Discriminating Gender: Legal, Medical, And Social Presumptions About Transgender And Intersex People, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2017

Discriminating Gender: Legal, Medical, And Social Presumptions About Transgender And Intersex People, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

"Discriminating Gender: Legal, Medical, and Social Presumptions About Intersex and Transgender People” analyzes the significance of the binary-gender presumption in legal responses to intersex people and to transgender people. Both intersex and transgender status challenge familiar understandings of gender, sex, bodies, and personhood. Intersexuality challenges the cultural belief that that everyone can be, and should be, categorized as female or as male. And transgender status challenges the belief that gender and sex are always coincident and that they are established at a person’s birth. More fundamentally, differences in social and legal responses to both transgender people and to intersex people …

Choosing Privacy, Irina D. Manta Jan 2017

Choosing Privacy, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

How does one balance national security and civil liberties when they are essentially incommensurable values? This Article seeks to answer that question by looking at both as a function of individual choice. We like national security in principle because it stops terrorists from taking away our choices—the choice to live, the choice to retain the integrity of our health, and the choice to act in the manner that we prefer. We like civil liberties because we want to be free from government interference when choosing the speech in which to engage, the religion we practice, and many other fundamental aspects …

Transactional Clinics As Change Agents In The Trump Era: Lessons From Two Contexts, Priya Baskaran, Michael Haber Jan 2017

Transactional Clinics As Change Agents In The Trump Era: Lessons From Two Contexts, Priya Baskaran, Michael Haber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The results of the 2016 presidential election and the efforts by the Trump administration to make sweeping changes to a wide range of federal policies have left communities across the country feeling overwhelmed and threatened. In its first year, the Trump administration has been working steadily to slash budgets for health care, housing, infrastructure, schools, and other public benefits that help low-income and middle-class Americans, while adopting policies and engaging in rhetoric that has made many immigrants, Muslims, people of color, and LGBTQ people feel increasingly vulnerable and marginalized.

The authors of this commentary run law clinics that provide pro …

Family Limited Partnerships And Section 2036: Not Such A Good Fit, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr Jan 2017

Family Limited Partnerships And Section 2036: Not Such A Good Fit, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The IRS has struggled to close down abusive family limited partnerships. At first unreceptive to IRS arguments, the courts eventually embraced section 2036 as an estate-tax tool for attacking such partnerships. Because the section was not designed to apply to partnerships, difficulties have arisen as the courts have struggled with the fit. In its most recent encounter, the Tax Court in Powell grappled with a fit-related issue that implicates the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Byrum. The Powell court, it will be argued, misread Byrum, conflating the majority opinion with the dissent – and converting the rule-based approach adopted by …

The Evaluation Of Perampanel As A Neuroprotective Pharmacotherapy In Traumatic Brain Injury, Virginia Aida Jan 2017

The Evaluation Of Perampanel As A Neuroprotective Pharmacotherapy In Traumatic Brain Injury, Virginia Aida

All ETDs from UAB

In the United States, 2.5 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year and an estimated 5.3 million are living with a TBI-related disability. A TBI alters the function of the brain and the brain pathology often resulting in long-lasting cognitive impairment, motor function impairments, and emotional changes. In conjunction with the physical changes a victim of TBI experiences, the injury can take a financial toll. It is estimated that 76.3 billion dollars is attributed to the direct and indirect costs of sustaining a TBI every year in the United States. Despite improvements in managing TBI, there are …
