Soil Hydraulic Property Estimation Under Major Land-Uses In The Shawnee Hills, Trinity Joseph Baker
Soil Hydraulic Property Estimation Under Major Land-Uses In The Shawnee Hills, Trinity Joseph Baker
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The ability to map soil moisture is becoming more important with changing climates and modeling these effects depends on reliable estimations of hydrologic soil properties under different land managements. This study: 1) tests the application of existing soil hydraulic property estimation methods against in-situ values of six catenas under two covers (forest and grass); 2) validate Random Forest Algorithm (RF) estimates informed from the six catenas on two separate catenas; 3) identify Rapid Carbon Assessment (RaCA) sites within the Shawnee Hills Region that represent different land-uses (Crop, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Forest, and Pasture); 4) apply RF learning tree informed …
Transcriptomic Analyses Of Cathatranthus Roseus Hairy Roots Overexpressing Crmyc2 And Orca3 And Roles Of Cross-Family Transcription Factor Interaction In Terpenoid Indole Alkaloid Biosynthesis, Xueyi Sui
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle), is a well-known medicinal plant that produces a vast array of terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs), including two anticancer compounds vinblastine and vincristine. Industrial scale production of TIAs is hampered by the difficulties of total chemical synthesis of these compounds and the fragmented knowledge on TIA pathway. Transcriptional regulation of the TIA biosynthetic pathway has not been thoroughly investigated in Catharanthus and only a few structural genes have been identified as the targets of two master regulators: the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor (TF) CrMYC2 and APETALA2/ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR (AP2/ERF), ORCA3. Next generation sequencing (NGS) has been …

Pervasive Pedagogy: Collaborative Cloud-Based Composing Using Google Drive, Maury Elizabeth Brown, Daniel L. Hocutt
Pervasive Pedagogy: Collaborative Cloud-Based Composing Using Google Drive, Maury Elizabeth Brown, Daniel L. Hocutt
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications
Cloud-based services designed for educational use, like Google Apps for Education (GAFE), afford deeply collaborative activities across multiple applications. Through primary research, the authors discovered that cloud-based technologies such as GAFE and Google Drive afford new opportunities for collaborative cross-platform composing and student engagement. These affordances require new pedagogies to transform these potentialities into practice, as well as a reexamination of contemporary theory of computers and composition. The authors’ journey implementing Google Drive as a composing and communication environment required continually remediating content, relationships, practices, and their own identities as they interacted with students in the cloud. This chapter addresses …
Legislating The First Amendment: A Trio Of Recommendations For Lawmakers Targeting Free Expression, Clay Calvert
Legislating The First Amendment: A Trio Of Recommendations For Lawmakers Targeting Free Expression, Clay Calvert
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
This Article offers three recommendations for lawmakers attempting to restrict expression that is presumptively protected by the First Amendment. The proposals include: (1) embracing a "prism of protection" through which all potential laws affecting expression are filtered prior to drafting; (2) mandating inclusion of sunset clauses in all statutes that may detrimentally impact free expression; and (3) adopting a comprehensive legislative oversight and review process for determining if an expired statute should be renewed, revised or abandoned. Although far from creating what Dean Roscoe Pound more than 100 years ago called a "science of legislation, " the proposals here nonetheless …
The Role Of Tristetraprolin In An Experimental Periodontitis Mouse Model, Trenton F. Jensen
The Role Of Tristetraprolin In An Experimental Periodontitis Mouse Model, Trenton F. Jensen
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Background: Tristetraprolin (TTP) is an RNA-‐‑binding protein that targets several immunomodulatory mRNA transcripts for degradation. Many TTP targets are key players in the pathogenesis bone loss associated with periodontal disease. To better understand the extent that host immune factors play during periodontal bone loss, we assessed alveolar bone levels, inflammation and osteoclast activity in periodontal tissues in WT mice and TTPARE mice (mice with an overexpression of TTP). Materials and Methods: The study is an animal study where 20 mice were divided randomly into two groups; wild-‐‑type (WT) and TTPARE mice were used for the study under specific pathogen free …
Genetic Analysis Of The A30.5 And L2 Proteins: Key Regulators Of Poxvirus Membrane Biogenesis, Justin Michael Radomski
Genetic Analysis Of The A30.5 And L2 Proteins: Key Regulators Of Poxvirus Membrane Biogenesis, Justin Michael Radomski
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Vaccinia is the model virus used to study the lifecycle of poxviruses, large DNA viruses that include agents of human disease such as smallpox and monkeypox. Unusual for DNA viruses, poxviruses replicate in the cytoplasm of the cell, autonomous from the nucleus. Because of this autonomy, the virus encodes a large number of genes devoted to replication and morphogenesis. The initial steps of morphogenesis, known as membrane biogenesis, remain unclear. The viral membrane is thought to originate from the endoplasmic reticulum; however, how the membrane is diverted from that organelle is currently not known. Various viral proteins have been identified …
Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Influence Of Water On Hydrolyzed Product Formation During The Feruloylation Of Vegetable Oil, David L. Compton, Kervin O. Evans, Michael Appell
Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Influence Of Water On Hydrolyzed Product Formation During The Feruloylation Of Vegetable Oil, David L. Compton, Kervin O. Evans, Michael Appell
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Feruloylated vegetable oil is a valuable green bioproduct that has several cosmeceutical applications associated with its inherent anti-oxidant and ultraviolet-absorption properties. Hydrolyzed vegetable oil by-products can influence product quality and consistency.
RESULTS: The formation of by-products by residual water in the enzymatic synthesis of feruloylated vegetable oil was investigated using chemical theory and experimental studies by monitoring the reaction over a 22-day period. The hydrolysis of vegetable oil is thermodynamically favored over the hydrolysis of the ethyl ferulate starting material. These results suggest that hydrolyzed vegetable oil products will be experimentally observed in greater concentrations compared to hydrolyzed ethyl …

Contributions Of Nanoscale Roughness To Anomalous Colloid Retention And Stability Behavior, Scott A. Bradford, Hyunjung Kim, Chongyang Shen, Salini Sasidharan, Jianying Shang
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
All natural surfaces exhibit nanoscale roughness (NR) and chemical heterogeneity (CH) to some extent. Expressions were developed to determine the mean interaction energy between a colloid and a solid−water interface, as well as for colloid−colloid interactions, when both surfaces contain binary NR and CH. The influence of heterogeneity type, roughness parameters, solution ionic strength (IS), mean zeta potential, and colloid size on predicted interaction energy profiles was then investigated. The role of CH was enhanced on smooth surfaces with larger amounts of CH, especially for smaller colloids and higher IS. However, predicted interaction energy profiles were mainly dominated by NR, …

Commercial pomegranate production area has increased substantially in the western hemisphere due to increased consumer interest in the fruit. Low nursery inventory has caused many growers to propagate vegetatively their own trees and the availability of only a few cultivars is believed to have played a role in a lack of diversity in the developing market. ‘Wonderful,’ the industry standard for pomegranate in several countries, has been propagated in the United States for over 100 years, yet there is limited scientific information regarding how to most effectively propagate ‘Wonderful’ and other important cultivars. This research included two experiments. Experiment 1 …

Insecticide resistance is a broadly recognised and well-studied management problem resulting from intensive insecticide use, which also provides useful evolutionary models of newly adapted phenotypes to changing environments. Two common assumptions in such models are the existence of fitness costs associated with insecticide resistance, which will place the resistant individuals at a disadvantage in insecticide-free environments, and the prevalence of random mating among insecticide-resistant and -susceptible individuals. However, cases of insecticide resistance lacking apparent fitness disadvantages do exist impacting the evolution and management of insecticide resistance. Assortative mating, although rarely considered, may also favour the evolution and spread of insecticide …

Cellular automata (CA) is a powerful tool for modeling the evolution of macroscopic scale phenomena as it couples time, space, and variables together while remaining in a simplified form. However, such application has remained challenging in forest insect epidemics due to the highly dynamic nature of insect behavior. Recent advances in temporal trajectory-based image analysis offer an alternative way to obtain high-frequency model calibration data. In this study, we propose an insect-CA modeling framework that integrates cellular automata, remote sensing, and Geographic Information System to understand the insect ecological processes, and tested it with measured data of mountain pine beetle …

Tracking Bacteria Through The Entire Gastrointestinal Tract Of A Beef Steer, Lisa M. Durso, Daniel N. Miller, Ty B. Schmidt, Todd Callaway
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Biological processes within beef cattle gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) influence animal health, and the output (feces) is an important vector for zoonotic pathogens and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Historically, outside of the rumen, little attention was paid to the bacteria along the GIT, despite their essential role in catabolizing feed into feces. Here we characterize bacteria from 15 GIT sites within a beef steer and examine the proportion of bacteria contributed by upstream compartments. This animal displayed characteristic differences between tissue and digesta communities in gastric and large-intestine, but not small-intestine, samples. The GIT sites shared between 50 and 80% of the …

Johne’s disease, a chronic gastrointestinal inflammatory disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, is endemic in dairy cattle and other ruminants worldwide and remains a challenge to diagnose using traditional serological methods. Given the close phylogenetic relationship between M. aviumsubsp. paratuberculosis and the human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis, here, we applied a whole-proteome M. tuberculosis protein array to identify seroreactive and diagnostic M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis antigens. A genome-scale pairwise analysis of amino acid identity levels between orthologous proteins in M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis and M. tuberculosis showed an average of 62% identity, with more than half the orthologous proteins sharing …

Long-Term No-Till And Stover Retention Each Decrease The Global Warming Potential Of Irrigated Continuous Corn, Virginia L. Jin, Marty R. Schmer, Catherine E. Stewart, Aaron J. Sindelar, Gary E. Varvel, Brian J. Wienhold
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Over the last 50 years, the most increase in cultivated land area globally has been due to a doubling of irrigated land. Long-term agronomic management impacts on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks, soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and global warming potential (GWP) in irrigated systems, however, remain relatively unknown. Here, residue and tillage management effects were quantified by measuring soil nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes and SOC changes (ΔSOC) at a long-term, irrigated continuous corn (Zea mays L.) system in eastern Nebraska, USA. Management treatments began in 2002, and measured treatments included no or high stover removal …

The Editor And Les Travailleurs: How Albert Tenney Championed The Rights Of The French-Canadian Mill Workers During The 1886 Diphtheria Epidemic In Brunswick, Maine, Laura Mosqueda Almasi Ma
All Student Scholarship
This thesis explores the devastating diphtheria epidemic that rocked the small Midcoast community and how Albert Tenney, through his weekly editorials, championed for the French immigrants and called attention to not only the shocking living conditions of the Cabot Mill‟s housing, but also convinced the Maine Board of Health that there was in fact an epidemic decimating the population. It is a story of passion, courage and partnership in acting upon what is right regardless of race, religion or nationality.
Animal Welfare: Measuring Strategies For Improving Lives, Elsbeth Paige-Jeffers Ma
Animal Welfare: Measuring Strategies For Improving Lives, Elsbeth Paige-Jeffers Ma
All Student Scholarship
Animals are sentient creatures entitled to humane treatment and lives of dignity. There are many fields which address this notion, including animal welfare science, ethics, law, policy, and veterinary science. Such a multi-disciplinary approach to animal welfare reveals numerous best practices which can be used to improve the way animals are conceived of and treated by both specialists and the public. However, despite this faceted consideration of animal welfare, there is a dearth of quantitative means to assess entities’ adherence to best practices. As such, the purpose of present study is to develop and refine an instrument which could be …

Much Ado About The Tpp's Effect On Pharmaceuticals, Emily M. Morris
Faculty Publications
The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement’s many provisions that were beneficial to the pharmaceutical industry have caused a good deal of controversy. Specifically, critics allege that the TPP’s provisions requiring that member states expand patentable subject matter, adjust pharmaceutical patent terms, and link regulatory marketing approval to a drug's patent status would have raised drug prices and hindered access to medicines, particularly in developing countries. Closer examination of these provisions as well as the various ways in which member states can modify or ameliorate the effects of these provisions suggests that their potential effect on drug prices and access to health care …
Climate Change And The Evolution Of Insect Immune Function, Danae Perry
Climate Change And The Evolution Of Insect Immune Function, Danae Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Insects are ectothermic organisms that have physiological, behavioral and life-history traits directly influenced by their environment. Investigations have shown that many insects use melanin to permanently darken their cuticles in cooler or drier climates to improve thermoregulation and desiccation resistance. Melanin is a major component of pathogen defense in insects. This suggests that environmentally driven adaptive changes in cuticular melanin may non-adaptively shape insect immune function. This hypothesis has been referred to as climate-related Cuticle Dependent Immune Investment (climate-related CDII). Climate-related CDII also suggests that a warming climate could lead to the evolution of a weakened melanin-based immune response due …

Measuring And Modeling Nmr And Emission Spectra To Gain New Insight Into Challenging Organic Compounds, Jacob Powell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advancement of theoretical methods in recent years has allowed the calculation of highly accurate spectroscopic parameters. Comparing these values to the corresponding experimental data can allow molecular structures to be elucidated. This dissertation details the use of experimental and theoretical data from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fluorescence spectroscopy to determine structure. Herein the NMR focus is on measuring & modeling chemical shift anisotropy and one-bond carbon-carbon J-coupling constants (1JCC). The fluorescence analysis models vibrationally resolved fluorescence spectra. Chemical shift anisotropy techniques were used to study two conflicting crystal structures of the n-alkyl fatty acid, lauric acid. These two …

Development And Formative Evaluation Of The Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, Mikeiya Y. Morrow
Development And Formative Evaluation Of The Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, Mikeiya Y. Morrow
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex issue among African American children, who experience significantly higher rates of CSA (Sedlak et al., 2012). Despite this, a dearth of research has examined CSA prevention among African American children. Moreover, there are no established culturally sensitive prevention programs targeted at addressing CSA among this demographic. This study addressed a significant gap in the literature by developing and evaluating the Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (Speak7). Speak7 is a culturally sensitive, adult-focused CSA prevention program that aims to enhance the CSA prevention competence of adults who provide for African American …

Examining Substance-Use Treatment Utilization Among Incarcerated Women In Central Appalachian Jails, Rae Lyn Glover
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Women in Central Appalachia represent a significant proportion of those engaging in problematic patterns of opioid use, which is concerning given the limited available services in the region and gender specific treatment barriers. This investigation seeks to understand the role of mental health and substance use symptoms among incarcerated Central Appalachian women and build on the conceptual model of substance use treatment utilization purposed by Leukefeld and colleagues (1998). Data for this study was drawn from a larger longitudinal investigation (NIDA 1R01-DA033866) and baseline data collected during initial interviews was analyzed. The sample included 400 women incarcerated at one of …
The Relationship Among Acculturation Orientation, Perceived Discrimination, Psychological Functioning And Gender Among South Asian And South East Asian International Students In The United States Of America, Dia Mason
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
The acculturation process for international students is influenced by several factors such as experiences of discrimination, economic condition, language fluency, and social support. Discrimination, which refers to negative or prejudicial behavior towards an individual or a group of individuals, takes place towards international students due to their poor grasp of the English Language (Lee & Rice, 2007), cultural differences (Cole & Ahmadi, 2003), and racial differences (Hanassab, 2006). Perceived discrimination (among other factors) has been identified as a potential moderator of the relationship between acculturation preferences and psychological functioning in acculturation theory (Berry, 2003). Apart from perceived discrimination, gender has …

Pill Poppin’ Nation: Substance Use, Mental Health, And Treatment Among Criminal Justice-Involved African Americans, Joi-Sheree' P. Knighton
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine substance use-related outcomes among criminal justice-involved African Americans using a multiple manuscript format. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has deemed nonmedical prescription opioid use an epidemic. National estimates indicate approximately 3.9% of African Americans engage in nonmedical prescription opioid use. Research suggests African Americans involved in the criminal justice system may be significantly at risk of substance use more generally; yet, there are no known estimates of nonmedical opioid use among this subgroup. Rising rates of nonmedical opioid use also has implications for discussing barriers to treatment among socioeconomically marginalized …
