Observing The Experience Of Racism Through Social Background, Leïla J. Dieye Dec 2017

Observing The Experience Of Racism Through Social Background, Leïla J. Dieye

Graduate Masters Theses

This study explores racism through the eyes of the one that experiences it. If different types of racism have already been established, the initial premise of the study is that some factors make its experience unique, such as one individual’s markers of identity and his history.

Data have been collected from in-depth interviews with ten participants belonging to five ethnic groups (Latino, African American, Asian, African and Middle Eastern). Those participants were asked to reflect on a specific moment when they witnessed racism, and on why it made them think that event in particular was racist. Then, they were asked …

Capital Planning, Selection, And Investment (Integrating Sustainability In Decision-Making), Marinilka B. Kimbro, Eric W. Wehrly Dec 2017

Capital Planning, Selection, And Investment (Integrating Sustainability In Decision-Making), Marinilka B. Kimbro, Eric W. Wehrly

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Inspired by Pope Francis’s call for a new journey that instills the importance of conservation and care for the environment, we propose a practical model that mathematically incorporates sustainability issues into capital planning, selection, and investment. Evidence suggests that managers apply net present value (NPV) methodologies in a way that disadvantages environmentally sustainable investments. If an NPV model does not consider the costs and risks of non-sustainable projects, then the potential benefits of alternative sustainable investments will appear much less valuable than present costs. Sustainable investments also often require larger initial investments with long-term benefits and distant cash flow time …

Faith-Based Socially Responsible Enterprises: Selected Philippine Cases, Aliza D. Racelis Dec 2017

Faith-Based Socially Responsible Enterprises: Selected Philippine Cases, Aliza D. Racelis

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have long played a role in international development and are increasingly involved in sustainability initiatives. Since they are motivated by a distinctive set of values, have particular modes of operation and governance, and hold a unique place within communities and the larger society, these organizations are poised to be distinctively successful and sustainable. In the case of the Philippines, the situation is unique in the sense that there are a large number of Christian business leaders and entrepreneurs who put their faith “to the plow.” Based on a review of the literature on faith-based social enterprises as …

Evaluation Of Extracellular Matrix Composition And Rheology As Determinants Of Growth, Invasion, And Response To Photodynamic Therapy In 3d Cell Culture Models Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Gwendolyn M. Cramer Dec 2017

Evaluation Of Extracellular Matrix Composition And Rheology As Determinants Of Growth, Invasion, And Response To Photodynamic Therapy In 3d Cell Culture Models Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Gwendolyn M. Cramer

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a notoriously lethal disease characterized by prominent stromal involvement, which plays complex roles in regulating tumor growth and therapeutic response. The extracellular matrix (ECM)-rich stroma has been implicated as a barrier to drug penetration, although stromal depletion strategies have had mixed clinical success. It remains less clear how biophysical interactions with the ECM regulate invasive progression and susceptibilities to specific therapies. Here, an integrative approach combining 3D cell culture and quantitative imaging techniques is used to evaluate invasive behavior and motility as determinants of response to classical chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT), in which light …

A Correlation Study Between Activity Items Of Touch Screen System For Upper Extremity Training And Functional Performance In Upper Limb Among Patients With Stroke, Shu-Yu Yang, Pei-Chi Hsiao, Yu-Sheng Yang, Chi-Min Yang, Jyh-Jong Chang, Ying-Chun Chou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Because of progress made in human-machine interfaces, touchscreens increasingly play a key role in daily living. A task-oriented concept combined with a computerized touchscreen training system was developed and used to facilitate upper limb rehabilitation after stroke. However, the reliability and validity of the activity items within the system required further verification. Therefore, the aims of this study were 1) to examine the reliability of scores for the activity items when patients with stroke used this device and 2) to verify criterion-related validity by analyzing the relationship between scores from this device and other standard upper limb functional assessments. Thirty …

Comparison Of Conventional Elastic Bandages And Novel Hand Gloves By Measuring Changes In Stroke Patients' Hand Temperature During Passive Upper Limb Exercises, Mei-Yi Lee, Chan-Yu Taso, Ka-Hei Lao, Shu-Shi Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Elastic bandages are often used to secure stroke patients' affected upper limbs to exercise equipment during physical rehabilitation. However, the application of elastic bandages can cause soft tissue injuries in patients' extremities. Therefore, our research team developed novel medical hand gloves, called "Yole Hands," to safely secure stroke patients' affected hands to exercise equipment. This study compared conventional elastic bandages with Yole Hands by measuring changes in stroke patients' hand temperature during passive upper limb exercises. This study recruited 18 stroke patients aged 63.1 ± 13.4 years from a rehabilitation clinic. A thermograph (midi LOGGER GL220, Graphtec) was used to …

In this paper the questions on how the Nuclear/Atomic radiations may be used for peaceful applications and specifically to Tanzanian situations are presented. Methods like Energy Dispersive X-Ray fluorescence (EDXRF), Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE), Electron probe Micro-Mass Analysis (EPMA), Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) for investigations of different types of samples in geology; environmental, medical, biological and chemical are discussed.

Building Columbia, Lawrence Lane Dec 2017

Building Columbia, Lawrence Lane

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the research from a project on the builders who helped build Columbia, South Carolina from 1890 to 1940, a dynamic time of growth as the city moved from post-Civil War recovery through industrialization and into modernization.1 Previous research of Columbia’s architectural history often focuses on the few architects with national recognition, like Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument. Frequently omitted from the city’s architectural story are the lesser-known developers, builders, contractors, brick masons, and other tradesmen from inside and outside of Columbia who contributed to the shaping of the city by helping build vernacular architecture …

Competition Merger Review For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In Indonesia, Zulheri Zulheri Dec 2017

Competition Merger Review For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In Indonesia, Zulheri Zulheri

Indonesia Law Review

This article aimed at expressing ideas on a legal construction of competition merger review (CMR) on Crossborder Mergers and Acquisitions (CBM&A) that have Indonesian legal dimension. The problem has been triggered by the lack of CMR guidelines for CBM&A to nurture a fair and sustainable business competition (FSBC). Consequently, the existing guideline is inadequate for reviewing CBM&A proposals which have a multi-jurisdiction dimension character. As a result, merging (gigantic) companies doing business in Indonesia have enormous opportunities to engage in anti-competitive behavior in the domestic market. In its turn, it brings the impact of reducing competition itself whereby national companies …

Toward A Theory Of The Arts And Sustainability, Nancy Bertaux Dec 2017

Toward A Theory Of The Arts And Sustainability, Nancy Bertaux

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

To make real progress on what can only be classified as environmental emergencies, we need a wide base of public consensus for action given that public motivation and involvement is a prerequisite for policymakers to implement what our scientists urge us to do. In this light, crucial thresholds of public motivation and involvement can be created by reaching into the hearts of individuals, an area of competitive advantage for the arts. Efforts to enhance understanding in this arena, however, must incorporate sufficient complexity given highly complex and inter-related challenges in sustainability. This article thus presents a theoretical framework for the …

Transforming Finance And Business Education: Finance’S Unique Opportunities, James A. F. Stoner, Frank M. Werner Dec 2017

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Mankind faces the challenge of transforming the existing global production, distribution, and consumption system into one that is more just and sustainable and which the Earth’s resources can support (e.g., Francis, 2015). Unfortunately, current business education is “part of the problem” of global unsustainability as it supports, enables, justifies, and intensifies the unsustainable aspects of the existing business system. Thus, while all people have opportunities to contribute to this transformation and are “called” to do so, university administrators and professors in all disciplines have a special opportunity and obligation to heed that call. This article is the second of three …
