Objectives: To determine the test–retest reliability and minimum detectable change scores for seven common clinical measurements of muscle strength and physical function in a multiethnic sample of sarcopenic, malnourished men and women.
Design: Each participant visited the laboratory seven times over 25 to 26 weeks. Reliability was assessed for each measurement from Familiarization 1 to Familiarization 2 (R1), Familiarization 2 to baseline testing (R2), Familiarization 3 to 12-week testing (R3), and Familiarization 4 to 24-week testing (R4).
Setting: Data were collected during a clinical trial at 23 sites in the United States, Belgium, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and the …
Establishing Biological Plausibility For Cognitive Frailty, Lana Jean Sargent
Establishing Biological Plausibility For Cognitive Frailty, Lana Jean Sargent
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive frailty is considered a potentially reversible age-related condition characterized by the simultaneous presence of both physical frailty and cognitive decline. The concept of cognitive frailty existing in older adults is indisputable, although the mechanisms and the directional relationship behind the dynamic association remain unexplained. Mechanisms have been suggested, often linking cognitive frailty to cognitive impairment or as a component of frailty but without an understanding of the biological bases for these associations we cannot not move forward with intervention trials. This dissertation examines the biological mechanisms for cognitive frailty. The study is the first to use a large number …

Episodic Salutary Experiences (Ese): A New Type Of Positive Affect And Its Relationship To Physical Health, Natalie Nusinow
Episodic Salutary Experiences (Ese): A New Type Of Positive Affect And Its Relationship To Physical Health, Natalie Nusinow
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Prior work has shown that positive affect is related to and can foster physical health. Recently, a subtype of positive affect has been identified, known as episodic salutary experiences (ESE). These experiences seem to be a type of positive affect or, alternatively, may produce a type of affective state that has not previously been studied. ESE is defined as spontaneous episodes of inner peace and lack of conflict that are noticeably different from one’s normal state. A cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine if ESE is associated with physical health, and if so, which aspects of ESE are most close …
Healthy Aging In The North: Sociocultural Influences On Diet And Physical Activity Among Older Adults In Anchorage, Alaska, Britteny M. Howell
Healthy Aging In The North: Sociocultural Influences On Diet And Physical Activity Among Older Adults In Anchorage, Alaska, Britteny M. Howell
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
Increasing rates of overweight, obesity, and related cardiovascular diseases among older adults in the United States present unique public health challenges. Cross-cultural research has shown marked variation in health across the world’s elder populations because aging is a biological process rooted in sociocultural context. The sociocultural environment contributes to complex negotiations of food and physical activity patterns for older adults. It is well established in the literature that urban residents report low levels of physical activity and have easy access to fast food outlets, which tend to be concentrated in lower-income neighborhoods. I utilize a biocultural framework, integrating nutritional anthropology …
Faculty Perceptions Of Online Teaching Effectiveness And Indicators Of Quality, Christine Frazer, Debra Sullivan, Deborah Weatherspoon, Leslie Hussey
Faculty Perceptions Of Online Teaching Effectiveness And Indicators Of Quality, Christine Frazer, Debra Sullivan, Deborah Weatherspoon, Leslie Hussey
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Online education programs in nursing are increasing rapidly. Faculty need to be competent in their role and possess the skills necessary to positively impact student outcomes. Existing research offers effective teaching strategies for online education; however, there may be some disconnect in the application of these strategies and faculty perceptions of associated outcomes. Focus groups were formed to uncover how nursing faculty in an online program define and describe teaching effectiveness and quality indicators in an asynchronous online environment. A semistructured interview format guided group discussion. Participants (n=11) included nurse educators from an online university with an average of 15 …

Hepatoprotective Effects Of Chinese Medicine Herbs Decoction On Liver Cirrhosis In Rats, N.A. Mat-Rahim, T.-H. Lim, N.A. Nor-Amdan, Sazaly Abubakar
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Hepatoprotective and curative activities of aqueous extract of decoction containing 10 Chinese medicinal herbs (HPE-XA-08) were evaluated in Sprague–Dawley albino rats with liver damage induced by thioacetamide (TAA). These activities were assessed by investigating the liver enzymes level and also histopathology investigation. Increases in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels were observed in rats with cirrhotic liver. No significant alterations of the liver enzymes were observed following treatment with HPE-XA-08. Histopathology examination of rats treated with HPE-XA-08 at 250 mg/kg body weight, however, exhibited moderate liver protective effects. Reduced extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins within the hepatocytes were noted …

Effects Of Studying Abroad On College Students, Kaliana Villa
Effects Of Studying Abroad On College Students, Kaliana Villa
Honors Program Theses
This thesis focused on the ways short-term study abroad capstones may change students’ political stances, as well as the way it may impact their worldview. To do this, data was collected via an online survey before and after each student’s capstone with permission from the University of Northern Iowa’s Study Abroad Center. The specific variables which were measured are political standpoint (how liberal or conservative a student is), and their worldview (how the students see the world around them on a global scale). Although there has been some research done on the ways studying abroad helps students develop cross-cultural skills, …

Speed Of Processing Training Results In Lower Risk Of Dementia, Jerri D. Edwards, Huiping Xu, Daniel O. Clark, Lin T. Guey, Lesley A. Ross, Frederick W. Unverzagt
Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences Faculty Publications
Introduction: Cognitive training improves cognitive performance and delays functional impairment, but its effects on dementia are not known. We examined whether three different types of cognitive training lowered the risk of dementia across 10 years of follow-up relative to control and if greater number of training sessions attended was associated with lower dementia risk.
Methods: The Advanced Cognitive Training in Vital Elderly (NCT00298558) study was a randomized controlled trial (N = 2802) among initially healthy older adults, which examined the efficacy of three cognitive training programs (memory, reasoning, or speed of processing) relative to a no-contact control condition. …

Nutrition And Health Equity: The Role Of Washington, D.C.’S East Capitol Urban Farm, Tia D. Jeffery
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
Disenfranchised communities have yet to become full beneficiaries of the core values of the Constitution. Health inequities are rooted in the social barriers connected to racism, classism, and sexism. Furthermore, marginalized groups in Washington, District of Columbia (D.C.), reside in food deserts. Urban agriculture has gained exposure as a working solution to the epidemic of food deserts in underserved urban communities. The East Capitol Urban Farm is one of the urban food hub extensions of the University of the District of Columbia College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences. It operates in a food desert in Ward 7 of …

Career Termination And Transition Experiences Of Former Collegiate Student-Athletes In Japan, Junya Adachi
Masters Theses
Athletes are unique groups of individuals who make a career out of sports. They face challenges to get into a sport, to stay in it and to adapt to life after their athletic career. The primary objective of this study was to explore the challenges and experiences that Japanese student-athletes encounter when they terminate their athletic career. More specifically, this study examined personal and sport characteristics, emotional responses, psychosocial support, coping strategies and other variables (e.g., gender, athletic identity) that may have impacted the athlete's reactions to career termination. Participants were 76 former Japanese student-athletes (ages 22-38 years; M= 38, …

Investigation Of Sandwich Generation Caregiver Perceptions And Factors Of Caregiving Strain, Samantha Marie Young
Masters Theses
The Sandwich Generation caregiver is responsible for caring for their children and parents simultaneously (Miller, 1981). In this study, stressors, burdens, and strains were analyzed in relation to caregiver demographics and the following variables: caregiving relationship quality, caregiving roles, communication, and resources (time and finances). The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that contribute to perceived strains in Sandwich Generation caregivers. The Sandwich Generation Caregiver Survey was distributed through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn), email, listservs, and word of mouth through a nonprobability snowball approach (Creswell, 2012). The researcher used frequency counts, percentages, and mean …
Unbefriended And Unrepresented: Better Medical Decision Making For Incapacitated Patients Without Healthcare Surrogates, Thaddeus Pope
Unbefriended And Unrepresented: Better Medical Decision Making For Incapacitated Patients Without Healthcare Surrogates, Thaddeus Pope
Faculty Scholarship
How should we make medical decisions for incapacitated patients who have no available legally-authorized surrogate decision maker? Because these patients lack decision making capacity, they cannot authorize treatment themselves. Because they lack a surrogate, nobody else can authorize treatment either. Clinicians and researchers have referred to these individuals as “adult orphans” or as “unbefriended,” “isolated,” or “unrepresented” patients. Clinicians and researchers have also described them as “unimaginably helpless,” “highly vulnerable,” and as the “most vulnerable,” because “no one cares deeply if they live or die.”
The persistent challenges involved in obtaining consent for medical treatment on behalf of these individuals …
Diabetes Self-Management Problems Of Older, Low-Income African American Women, Pearlean Day Day
Diabetes Self-Management Problems Of Older, Low-Income African American Women, Pearlean Day Day
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects low-income African American women, age 50 years and older: 30% to 40% of this population has this chronic disease. Two significant factors affecting poor diabetes practice adherence are food insecurity and depression; another is obesity. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if either food insecurity or depression significantly affect Type 2 diabetes self-management practices; and/or if food insecurity significantly influences practice adherence indirectly, through the mediator of depression, while controlling for obesity. The research questions were aligned with the theoretical pathways posited in Matthews's reserve capacity model (RCM) and used the …

Instrumental- And Emotion-Focused Care Work During Physical Health Events: Comparing Gay, Lesbian, And Heterosexual Marriages, Debra Umberson, Mieke Beth Thomeer, Rhiannon A. Kroeger, Corinne Reczek, Rachel Donnelly
Faculty Publications
Objectives: We consider emotion- and instrumental-focused care work and marital stress during significant physical health events in midlife gay, lesbian, and heterosexual marriages. Method: We employ the factorial method, an extension of the actor-partner interdependence model, to analyze survey data from 808 midlife gay, lesbian, and heterosexual spouses in 404 unions. Results: The amount of emotion- and instrumental-focused care work provided during physical health events, and the associations between care work and marital stress, depends on the gender of the respondent, gender of the spouse, and whether spouses are in a same-sex or different-sex union. For example, in both same- …
Theory Of Mind And Its Relation To Psychopathy, Ariana Hays
Theory Of Mind And Its Relation To Psychopathy, Ariana Hays
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Psychopathy is a personality dysfunction wherein an individual is unemotional and has a deficit in empathy (Dolan & Fullam, 2004). Theory of mind is the ability to perceive other’s thoughts, beliefs, emotions, etc. (Vonk, Hill, Mercer & Noser, 2015). This is similar to empathy, and as such is likely to have a relationship with psychopathy, although no such research has been undertaken to date. In this study, I correlated measures of psychopathy with theory of mind, sampling from Butler’s undergraduate population. Due to my combined major in Psychology and Criminology, I then researched and discuss the similarities theory of mind …
A Study Of Alternative Education Seat Time Waiver Students In Michigan, Linden A. Moore
A Study Of Alternative Education Seat Time Waiver Students In Michigan, Linden A. Moore
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In September of 2007, the Michigan Department of Education introduced a program referred to as seat time waivers to a few school districts in Michigan to pilot. During the 2009- 2010 school year, 999 students were on seat time waivers with a total of 5070 classes taken by these students. While the number of online learners continues to grow exponentially, the levels of success are questionable.
This study investigates the reason why some students placed on seat time waivers find academic success while others do not. It compares the different academic characteristics the students self-report and identifies which of these …

End-Of-Life Caregiving And Meaning Reconstruction : Experiences Of Adult Children Providing Home-Based End-Of-Life Care For A Parent, Kim Marie Tassinari
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Caring for a terminally ill parent is a tremendous responsibility and a job for which most adult children are unprepared, especially if care is provided in the home. As the silver tsunami or the graying of America, fast approaches, many families will be faced with the tremendous responsibility of caring for a parent. Few researchers, however, have examined the experiences of adult children who have provided end-of-life (EOL) care in the home. Moreover, there is a paucity of research from the counseling profession that explores how individuals construct meaning after EOL caregiving experiences with their parents or how they make …

For persons living with diagnosed HIV infection (PLWDHI) 50 years of age and older, in addition to living with diagnosed HIV infection, they are also at risk for age-related chronic conditions. Optimal management of these conditions in addition to HIV is needed if they hope to achieve positive health outcomes such as achieving durable viral suppression, which is the goal for persons receiving HIV treatment. For these patients, having adequate health related information, and the ability to access and navigate the healthcare system, would help them stay engaged and maintain adherence to HIV care. Factors that have been found to …

Public Finance Of Long-Term Services And Supports, Young Joo Park
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Nursing home finance is an important issue for policy makers and healthcare financial managers due to an aging population and the dependence of nursing facilities on public finance. In this dissertation, I have three specific aims: (1) to test whether neighborhood characteristics affect the availability of resources in urban nursing homes in the U.S.; (2) to identify the optimal administrative support for maintaining financially sustainable nonprofit nursing facilities in the U.S.; and (3) to examine the effect of Medicare-Medicaid financial alignment on government expenditure structures. This set of analyses provides a constructive framework for a better understanding of nursing home …
