Stimulated Hyposalivary Flow Rates In Healthcare Students In An Interprofessional Awareness Educational Program Curriculum, R Constance Wiener
Stimulated Hyposalivary Flow Rates In Healthcare Students In An Interprofessional Awareness Educational Program Curriculum, R Constance Wiener
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Purpose. Hyposalivation influences quality of life and medication compliance. However, oral health knowledge (in general) and knowledge about hyposalivation (in particular) are often lacking in nondental healthcare professional’s curricula. Additionally, hyposalivation has not been adequately studied in young adults. The purpose for this study is twofold: to use an interprofessional educational curriculum to increase nondental healthcare students’ knowledge about oral health and salivary testing and determine whether hyposalivation is different between sexes in young adults. Method. First-year medical and pharmacy students () learned the process of saliva collection and provided samples in an interprofessional program. Results. There were 14.4% of …
Common Factors Related To Illicit Substance Use Among Nurses In North America, Madison Marshall, Reinelle Regala, Lucy Gray, Emma Pedlar, Samantha Naguit
Common Factors Related To Illicit Substance Use Among Nurses In North America, Madison Marshall, Reinelle Regala, Lucy Gray, Emma Pedlar, Samantha Naguit
Student Research Posters
The prevalence of illicit substance use among registered nurses, though not widely studied or addressed, is understood to be an essential issue facing healthcare professionals. An impaired nurse is defined as someone who has impaired functioning as a result of substance abuse and it interferes with their professional judgment and ability to deliver safe, high quality care. Registered nurses have access to many high-controlled prescription medications, with little oversight, and the opportunity for substance abuse is significant. In our research, we studied the risk factors, the prevalence, and the preventative measures involved in addressing illicit substance use among nurses.

Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy For The Treatment Of Osteoarthritis: Qualitative Meta-Analysis And Literature Review, James D. Montgomery
Theses & ETDs
Osteoarthritis is an end-stage joint condition caused by biomechanical stress to cartilage tissue. Progression of the condition can be attributed to a loss of homeostasis, both in concentrations of anabolic and catabolic mediators in the joint, and in the structure of the joint. Treatment options for osteoarthritis address primary symptoms of pain and loss of function by slowing the progression of the condition through behavioral changes, or replacement of the joint with a prosthetic. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a multipotent stem cell found in a number of adult tissues and have demonstrated the ability to differentiate into chondrocytes. Use …

A Review Of Animal-Assisted Interventions In Long-Term Care Facilities, Jenna Ebener, Hunhui Oh
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
Past research fails to make connections comparing appropriate settings for the benefits of different species of therapy and resident animals in long-term care facilities specifically for the elderly. Two types of animal-assisted interactions (therapy and resident) and four animal species (birds, cats, dogs, and fish) were compared. The findings were sorted into five categories of benefits (behavioral, mental, physical, physiological, and social) and three additional structural variables (affordability, accessibility, and cons). Appropriate activities for each species were also suggested. The review revealed it is important for the facility to consider its budget, number and ailments of residents, type of preferred …

Daughter's Generation: The Importance Of Having Daughters Living Nearby For Older Korean Immigrants' Mental Health, Hunhui Oh, Monika Ardelt, Tanya Koropeckyj-Cox
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
With declining adherence to filial piety in East Asian cultures, the closeness of adult daughters rather than sons may become more important for older Asian immigrants’ well-being. With a sample of 177 older Korean immigrants to the United States (age 60+, M = 72, SD = 7.7), we examined how and to what extent having daughters living nearby rather than sons (daughters-in-law) is related to older Asian immigrants’ mental health, moderating the direct relationship between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. The analyses showed physical proximity of daughters rather than sons (daughters-in-law) functioned as a stress buffer by reducing the …

Welcome to the 2017 directory for the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) at West Virginia University! This inaugural SoTL directory began as a collaboration between the Teaching and Learning Commons and the Digital Publishing Institute.
We began the academic year defining the broad scope of research that we wanted faculty instructors to include under the heading of SoTL work--from peer-reviewed publications to presentations and poster sessions--anything that included thoughtful reflection on and research of teaching practices that was distributed to audiences in a formal way. We hope this inaugural directory introduces you to a few of the scholars on …
Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress
Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A social ecological model is applied to the secondary analysis of qualitative data to study the impact of place on rural food access for older adults in West Virginia. The use of a social-ecological model to review the senior’s coded narratives provided a clearer picture of higher impact, upstream levers to address food security for older adults in a rural region. The elderly have restricted access to food in rural West Virginia because of an indirect relationship with place that acts through the social ecological domains of the built environment, macrosocial factors, stressors, the natural environment, and social support. The …

Developing The Family Involvement Questionnaire (Fiq): A Measure Of Family Involvement In The Lives Of Residents At Long-Term Care Facilities, Christopher Thomas Fast
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Intro: One factor that has been shown to improve long-term care facility resident’s quality of life is family involvement (Gaugler, 2005). Despite this, the measures that currently exist to measure family involvement in the lives of older adults residing in longterm care facilities are rather simplistic, using visitation frequency as the prominent gauge of involvement and a situation specific fashion (Port et al., 2005). The purpose of this study was to design a measure of family involvement that could be used to gauge more aspects of family involvement than visitation alone and be useful in a variety of settings. Methods: …
A Comparison Of Physical Nursing Home Environment For Older Adults And Their Families, Phatt Thaitrong
A Comparison Of Physical Nursing Home Environment For Older Adults And Their Families, Phatt Thaitrong
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Globally, aging populations and increases in chronic diseases mean that more people will need long-term care in the next decade. Providing appropriate care to meet the needs of older adults and their families is a key consideration. This move to create a home-like environment in nursing homes has become extensive this past decade. Having an appropriate atmosphere where residents feel like they belong can help elderly people to age healthfully. This systematic literature analysis will address older adult residents' and their families' needs for nursing home physical environments and identify key elements of the physical nursing home environment for older …

Impact Of Osteoarthritis Self-Efficacy Toolkit On Adults With Osteoarthritis, Connie Hutley Kiser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over 26 million U.S. citizens have a form of arthritis; osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form. Self-efficacy (SE) is defined as a psychological construct which identifies an individual's confidence when performing a behavior. SE is deemed a vital judge of self-management (SM) in those with OA. The purpose of this evidence-based practice, quality improvement project was to improve SE in OA patients. The identified gap in nursing practice was the lack of SE in OA patients. The project question asked whether a toolkit with information regarding SE in OA can improve SE of management of disease-associated symptoms in adults …

Are Musical Autobiographical Memories Special? It Ain’T Necessarily So, Andrea R. Halpern, Jennifer M. Talarico, Nura Gouda, Victoria J. Williamson
Faculty Journal Articles
We compared young adults' autobiographical (AB) memories involving Music to memories concerning other specific categories and to Everyday AB memories with no specific cue. In all cases, participants reported both their most vivid memory and another AB memory from approximately the same time. We analyzed responses via quantitative ratings scales on aspects such as vividness and importance, as well as via qualitative thematic coding. In the initial phase, comparison of Music-related to Everyday memories suggested all Musical memories had high emotional and vividness characteristics whereas Everyday memories elicited emotion and other heightened responses only in the ‘‘vivid’’ instruction condition. However, …

The Intercultural Effectiveness Of University Students, H Gonzales
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
Intercultural communication has reached new levels with economic globalization, increased sophistication of communication technologies, and “internationalization” of education. As a critical tool for intercultural effectiveness, having a multicultural personality shapes the nature of interaction with people from other cultural backgrounds. In the university context, to advance internationalization, tertiary institutions need to be real international centers for teaching and learning with respect to people’s world views. This study aimed to explore intercultural effectiveness of university students by using the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). With this purpose in mind, 493 students from the University of Notre Dame (ND), Sydney participated in a …

The Relationship Between Sleep, Working Memory, And Decision Making In Young And Old Adult Populations, Melissa G. Merz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Sleep is known to influence basic tasks concerning working memory, reaction time and executive functioning (Silva, Wang, Ronda, Wyatt, & Duffy, 2010; Nebes, Buysse, Halligan, Houck, & Monk, 2009). However, the amount that sleep influences these functions varies from study to study possibly due to differences in age and task design. Aim 1A of this study is to determine if sleep quality affects working memory. Aim 1B of this study is to determine if age affects sleep quality and working memory in comparison of young and old adult populations. Finally, Aim 2 of this study is to determine if there …

Nurse Practitioner Student Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Skin Cancer Assessments, Ryan Woodmansee
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer each year in the United States. With skin cancer and the demand for nurse practitioners (NPs) in primary care both on the rise, an accurate assessment of how well NP students are being prepared to perform skin cancer assessments is needed. Patient outcomes are directly linked to early detection and treatment which is essential for all types of skin cancer, especially melanoma. Nurse Practitioners need to be able to recognize the early stages of malignancy versus benign skin lesions and perform accurate skin examinations. The ability to assess practitioners’ knowledge while …

Exploring The Impact Of Gender Inequities On The Promotion Of Cardiovascular Health Of Women In Pakistan, Rubina Barolia, Alexander M. Clark, Gina M. Higginbottom
School of Nursing & Midwifery
Cardiovascular disease exerts an enormous burden on women's health. The intake of a healthy diet may reduce this burden. However, social norms and economic constraints are often factors that restrain women from paying attention to their diet. Underpinned by critical realism, this study explores how gender/sex influences decision-making regarding food consumption among women of low socioeconomic status (SES). The study was carried out at two cardiac facilities in Karachi, Pakistan, on 24 participants (male and female from different ethnic backgrounds), who had received health education. Using an interpretive descriptive approach, the study identified major barriers to a healthy diet: proscribed …

The Effects Of Unpredictable Food On Corticosterone And Social Learning In Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), Megan Catharine Wurtz
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Foraging success can limit fitness if resources are unpredictable and strongly favor those that learn socially. Unpredictability can be a stressor and trigger elevations of stress hormones, that coordinate whole body responses to challenging environmental conditions. We explored the effects of unpredictable food on behavior, physiology, and receptiveness to social information using an observer/demonstrator paradigm in red crossbills, a highly social species that are adapted to cope with high degrees of resource unpredictability. Unpredictable food limited food intake (X21 = 10, p = 0.0012), caused a decline in body condition (X21 = 5.9, p …

The Romantic Baby Boomer: A Successful Aging Analysis Of Romantic Comedy Film Trailers, Annette Marie Schelling Masterson
Theses - ALL
On any given Friday night, theaters across the United States are filled with teenagers and young adults, often to see the new Blockbuster that has just been released. The film industry has responded by producing content specifically targeted to this demographic. Unfortunately, this has left a major portion of the population waiting for material that is relatable. Even when there is a character over the age of 50, they are regularly for comic relief or portrayed as weak and incapable. The recent trend of romantic comedies incorporating storylines for older adults is still underrepresented in academic research. This thesis set …

Recognizing Elder Mistreatment: A Guide For Courts, Laura Mosqueda, Theresa Sivers-Teixeira, Stacey Hirst
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
The crime of elder abuse takes many forms: financial, emotional, sexual, and physical abuse, as well as neglect. In many (perhaps most) circumstances, multiple forms coexist and this is referred to as poly victimization. As in child abuse and domestic violence, people who are victimized tend to be vulnerable for a variety of reasons that span from physical to cognitive to psychological domains. This article outlines several aspects of age-related physical changes and highlights those features of aging that can make an older adult susceptible to elder abuse and neglect. We will go on to describe physical manifestations and laboratory …

Auditory cognitive training (ACT) improves attention in older adults; however, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are still unknown. The present study examined the effects of ACT on the P3b event-related potential reflecting attention allocation (amplitude) and speed of processing (latency) during stimulus categorization and the P1-N1-P2 complex reflecting perceptual processing (amplitude and latency). Participants completed an auditory oddball task before and after 10 weeks of ACT (n = 9) or a no contact control period (n = 15). Parietal P3b amplitudes to oddball stimuli decreased at post-test in the trained group as compared to those …
