Effects Of Serial Subtractions On Elderly Gait Speed In A Virtual Reality Setting, Taylor Leeder Mar 2017

Effects Of Serial Subtractions On Elderly Gait Speed In A Virtual Reality Setting, Taylor Leeder

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries in older adults aged 65+ with one in three adults falling each year. Cognitive processes are involved in gait, and thus, as cognitive changes are normative with age, this may impact fall risk in the elderly. Sixteen older adults aged 70.8±5.3 years took part in a dual-task (DT) study where they walked on a split-belt self-paced treadmill with and without a virtual reality (VR) setting while simultaneously performing a serial subtraction (SS) task. For SS, individuals were given a random 3-digit starting number and told to subtract by three from that number …

Reasons Why Dissatisfied Acute Care Registered Nurses And Health Care Assistants Remain In Their Jobs, Zelda Gibbs

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Session presented on Saturday, March 18, 2017:

Financial challenges for hospitals demand strategies to ensure superior patient satisfaction scores. Healthcare employees face substantial challenges in their efforts to provide exceptional patient care and meet organizational expectations (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2013; Top issues, 2016). Health care assistants (HCAs) are providing direct care for patients along with registered nurses (RNs). Yet, they are an understudied population in acute care facilities. Job descriptions for HCAs in acute care facilities are extremely diverse, and RNs feel reluctant to assign responsibilities to HCAs (Jenkins & Joyner, 2013; McKenzie & Turkhud, 2013). Stressful …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Session presented on Saturday, March 18, 2017: Scope of Abstract: New nurse educators often characterize their transition into the professional faculty role as being fraught with anxiety, uncertainty, and a general lack of confidence (Ferguson, 2011). A frequently identified factor that hinders the role transition is a lack of formal pedagogical education (Schoening, 2013). One evidence-based solution to combat this emotionally tumultuous challenge is through the use of formalized mentoring programs (Ferguson, 2011). According to Brody et al. (2016), 82% of mentored nurse educators report a willingness to mentor others, and 95.5% of the mentored nurse educators would recommend mentorship …

Nutritional Approaches To Achieve Weight Loss In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease., Christine C Hsu, Erik Ness, Kris V Kowdley Mar 2017

Nutritional Approaches To Achieve Weight Loss In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease., Christine C Hsu, Erik Ness, Kris V Kowdley

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can range in spectrum from simple hepatic steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is characterized by lipotoxicity, hepatocellular ballooning, and inflammation and can progress to cirrhosis. Weight loss is the cornerstone treatment for NAFLD and NASH. Various randomized controlled trials have shown that weight loss of ≥5-10% leads to significant improvements in hepatic steatosis. Diets high in sodium and fructose have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Although some clinical studies suggest that an isocaloric high-fructose diet does not worsen NAFLD, these clinical studies are often short in duration. More recently, the Dietary Approaches …

Adverse Events And Treatment Discontinuations Of Antimuscarinics For The Treatment Of Overactive Bladder In Older Adults: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Scott Martin Vouri, Clark D. Kebodeaux, Paul M. Stranges, Besu F. Teshome

Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

Introduction

Antimuscarinics should be used with caution in older adults with overactive bladder (OAB) due to anticholinergic adverse events (AEs). Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) have analyzed safety-related outcomes but have not specified risk in the elderly, the population at highest risk for AEs. The aim of this review is to explore and evaluate AEs and treatment discontinuations in adults 65 or older taking antimuscarinics for OAB.

Methods

Keywords were searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) along with sub-analyses and pooled analyses that compared antimuscarinics to placebo or another antimuscarinic …

Integrating Feminist Theory Into Myocardial Infarction Symptom Research, John R. Blakeman Mar 2017

Integrating Feminist Theory Into Myocardial Infarction Symptom Research, John R. Blakeman

Faculty Publications - Mennonite College of Nursing

Heart disease remains the number one killer of men and women globally, yet women have traditionally received less research attention in the cardiovascular literature, and an androcentric bias has persisted. Specifically, symptoms of myocardial infarction (MI) have been shown to be varied between men and women. Feminist standpoint theory is one perspective that researchers can use to explore the situated knowledge that women possess, given their unique experiences. This project incorporates a substantial body of literature, reviews feminist standpoint theory, and proposes three critical steps for MI symptom researchers to use as guides when conducting research. To advance the perspectives …

What Does Successful Aging Mean? Lay Perception Of Successful Aging Among Elderly Singaporeans, Qiushi Feng, Paulin Tay Straughan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Objectives: We explore the culturally specific meaning of successful aging in Singapore, an ethnically diverse city-state in Asia. We aim to investigate lay perceptions of successful aging among the elderly individuals in Singapore and further examine variations of these perceptions. Methods: We applied a mixed-method research design. Firstly, we conducted qualitative interviews with 49 elderly respondents, generating 12 main subjective components of successful aging. Next, we did a national survey with a sample of 1,540 local residents aged 50 to 69 years, in which respondents were asked to evaluate the importance of each subjective component of successful aging. We used …

The Role Of Working Memory Among Non-Traditional Foreign Language Students, Gabriela Olivares-Cuhat, Michelle H. Ploof

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Over the last 40 years, a growing number of nontraditional students have joined the ranks of higher education. However, due to a number of internal and external factors, these students face multiple social, economic, and academic challenges that may limit their success in postsecondary education. The focus of this article is to examine the implications of these challenges on the learning of a foreign language (FL), and more specifically on the role played by working memory (WM) with nontraditional FL learners. To this end, research studies in the fields of psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology and neuroscience are reviewed and their findings …

2016 Elder Economic Security Standard Index™ For Boston, Yang Li, Ping Xu, Jan Mutchler, Center For Social And Demographic Research On Aging, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

The Elder Economic Security StandardTM Index (Elder Index) is a measure of the cost of living for older adults age 65 or older living independently in today's economy. The Elder Index defines economic security as the income level at which elders are able to cover basic and necessary living expenses and age in their homes, without relying on benefit programs, loans or gifts. The Elder Index defines an “economic security gap” as having incomes between the Federal Poverty Line and the Elder Index. Older adults living “in the gap” have incomes too high to qualify for many means-tested public …

Family Support For Older Persons In Thailand: Challenges And Opportunities, John Knodel, Bussarawan Puk Teerawichitchainan Mar 2017

Family Support For Older Persons In Thailand: Challenges And Opportunities, John Knodel, Bussarawan Puk Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Population aging and the wellbeing of older persons are major emerging challenges for families, communities, and government in Thailand as in much of Asia. Traditionally, support and care for the elderly are met within the family. Adult children are important providers of material support as well as other forms of assistance to their older-age parents. The state and communities typically provide limited care services for the older population. Currently, Thailand is facing demographic and socioeconomic changes that pose significant challenges for the roles that family members, especially adult children, play in providing support for the elderly. This paper empirically examines …

Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Polymorphism And Birth Timing: Pathway Analysis Among African American Women, Shannon L. Gillespie, Jeremy L. Neal, Lisa Christian, Laura A. Szalacha, Donna O. Mccarthy, Pamela J. Salsberry Mar 2017

Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Polymorphism And Birth Timing: Pathway Analysis Among African American Women, Shannon L. Gillespie, Jeremy L. Neal, Lisa Christian, Laura A. Szalacha, Donna O. Mccarthy, Pamela J. Salsberry

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background: Timing of birth is a major determinant of newborn health. African American women are at increased risk for early birth, particularly via the inflammatory pathway. Variants of the IL1RN gene, which encode the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) protein, are implicated in early birth. The biological pathways linking these variables remain unclear. Evidence also suggests that inflammatory pathways differ by race; however, studies among African American women are lacking.

Objectives: We assessed whether an IL1RN variant was associated with timing of birth among African American women and whether this relationship was mediated by lower anti-inflammatory IL-1Ra production or …

Time To Refocus Assessment Of Vision In Older Adults? Contrast Sensitivity But Not Visual Acuity Is Associated With Gait In Older Adults, James Loughman, Eoin Duggan, Oma Donoghue, Rose Anne Kenny, Hilary Cronin, Ciarán Finucane

Articles

Background: The relationship between measures of visual function and gait related risk factors for falls is unclear. In this study, we examine the relationship between visual function (visual acuity [VA] and contrast sensitivity [CS] at multiple spatial frequencies) and quantitative spatiotemporal gait, using a large, nationally representative sample of community dwelling older adults. Methods: Participants aged 50 and over were recruited as part of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). VA was measured with the LogMAR chart according to the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study protocol. CS was measured at five spatial frequencies ranging 1.5 to 18 cycles …
