Background—Conventional coronary artery disease risk factors might potentially explain at least 90% of the attributable risk of coronary artery disease. To better understand the association between the pre-industrial lifestyle and low prevalence of coronary artery disease risk factors, we examined the Tsimane, a Bolivian population living a subsistence lifestyle of hunting, gathering, fishing, and farming with few cardiovascular risk factors, but high infectious inflammatory burden.

Methods—We did a cross-sectional cohort study including all individuals who self-identified as Tsimane and who were aged 40 years or older. Coronary atherosclerosis was assessed by coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring done with …

Older Adults And Mobile Technology: Factors That Enhance And Inhibit Utilization In The Context Of Behavioral Health, Alexis Kuerbis, Adina Mulliken, Frederick Muench, Alison A. Moore, Daniel Gardner

Publications and Research

While numbers and proportions of older adults with behavioral health issues are expected to substantially increase, there is also a widening gap in available services for older adults. Mobile health interventions (mhealth) are a way to address existing barriers to treatment, provide frontline assessment and increase access to services for older adults. Due to perpetuated stereotypes, many assume that older adults do not utilize mobile technology nor will they accept a mHealth intervention. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize contemporary literature from information technology and healthcare regarding: (1) current mobile technology utilization by older adults, particularly in regards …

Eaat This: How Eaat1 Knockdown In Astrocytes Alters Aggression In Drosophila Melanogaster, Haley N. Shepard Apr 2017

Eaat This: How Eaat1 Knockdown In Astrocytes Alters Aggression In Drosophila Melanogaster, Haley N. Shepard

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

How behavior and information is encoded in brain circuits and how individual neurons influence these brain circuits is a growing question in neuroscience. In the nervous system of many organisms, including humans and Drosophila, exists a subset of neurons that are capable of releasing more than one neurotransmitter, a phenomena called co-transmission. How co-transmission may alter circuits dedicated to behavior is a challenging question. To begin to answer this question we used the genetic tools available in Drosophila to investigate how the release of two neurotransmitters from a single neuron can alter aggression. Astrocytes surround the synapses of neurons …

Transgenerational Patterns Of Communication Orientations And Depression Among Mothers And Adult Children, Timothy Curran, Jennifer A. Samp, Anastacia Janovec Apr 2017

Transgenerational Patterns Of Communication Orientations And Depression Among Mothers And Adult Children, Timothy Curran, Jennifer A. Samp, Anastacia Janovec

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study investigated intergenerational transmissions of conversation orientations, conformity orientations, and depressive symptoms among 235 (N = 470) mother–child dyads. The analysis revealed that mothers’ reports of conformity orientation in her family of origin positively predicted her child’s report of conformity orientation and conversation orientation. Moreover, maternal depressive symptoms predicted child reports of family communication climates, which in turn predicted child depressive symptoms. A mediation analysis showed a significant indirect effect from maternal depressive symptoms to child depressive symptoms through child reports of conformity orientation. Implications for transgenerational patterns of family communication climates and depressive symptoms are discussed.

Positive Relationships As An Indicator Of Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Larry J. Nelson Apr 2017

Positive Relationships As An Indicator Of Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Larry J. Nelson

Faculty Publications

In any discussion about flourishing in emerging adulthood, it would be easy to simply think about the positive things that young people do (e.g., pursue education, volunteer, serve, engage in political activism). However, few emerging adults walk the path toward adulthood alone. They embark on and make their way through the third decade of life within a myriad of complex relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. However, the changing nature of these relationships is arguably more complex than at any other point in their lives to date. Graduation (for most) from high school brings the dissolution of many peer …

The Mechanism Of Life Span Extension In Rpd3-Mutant Drosophila, Jared Keith Woods Apr 2017

The Mechanism Of Life Span Extension In Rpd3-Mutant Drosophila, Jared Keith Woods

Doctoral Dissertations

It was previously discovered that mutations in rpd3, a gene coding for the mammalian histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) homologue, led to an increased lifespan in Drosophila (Rogina et al., 2002). From changes in dSir2 gene expression observed in this initial study and the fact that flies on a calorically restricted diet did not live longer, it was hypothesized that the mechanism of longevity extension overlapped with that of caloric restriction (CR). CR is one of the most effective ways to extend life span in a variety of species ranging from yeast to mammals. CR affects many aspects of metabolism …

Evaluation Of Parenting Education For High-Risk Fathers: Relationship With A Child’S Mother As An Indicator Of Paternal Involvement, Paige Forcier Apr 2017

Evaluation Of Parenting Education For High-Risk Fathers: Relationship With A Child’S Mother As An Indicator Of Paternal Involvement, Paige Forcier

Honors Scholar Theses

This study evaluates the implications of parenting education programs for high-risk fathers. Participants were young, underprivileged, minority, and unmarried fathers in urban Hartford. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify participants’ perceptions of the program, their roles as fathers, and motivations for change. Interviews were coded using a modified version of Prochaska’s Theory of Change. Additionally, grounded theory was employed to identify major themes in the interviews regarding father involvement. A priori-like coding was used to capture the quality of relationships between the father, his co-parent, and his motivation for change. Consistent with literature, fathers that had more positive relationships …

Cerebellar Abnormalities In Developing Dmd Mdx Mice And Respiratory Compensatory Responses To Acute Isocapnic Hypoxia, Katherine R. Longest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Previous studies have analyzed causal factors among infants who succumb to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Two causal factors include the presence of a brain abnormality and exogenous stressors, it was hypothesized that cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) dysfunction would inhibit ventilation during graduated challenges of isocapnic hypoxia conditions (19%, 17%, 15%, and 13% O2/ 3% CO2) compared to normal room air (21% O2, 0% CO2, 79% N). The challenges of isocapnic hypoxia conditions were chosen to simulate an environment with exogenous stressors that an infant with an unknown brain abnormality might experience. Experiments were carried out on sibling pairs of …

The Effectiveness Of Music Therapy To Reduce Agitation Among Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Caroline Mazon Apr 2017

The Effectiveness Of Music Therapy To Reduce Agitation Among Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Caroline Mazon

Honors Theses

According to the Alzheimer’s Association (2016), Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is diagnosed every 66 seconds resulting in this disease being the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Among other signs and symptoms, agitation is one of the most challenging symptoms that patients and caregivers must try to control using nonpharmacological therapies or prescribed pharmacological treatments. Among many professions, music therapy has been used to specifically lower the levels of agitation in AD patients. Live music, “sing a long’s”, using instruments, and listening to a song of the patients’ choice have all been shown to reduce agitation behaviors …

The Tsimane Health And Life History Project: Integrating Anthropology And Biomedicine, Michael Gurven, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Aaron D. Blackwell, Bret Beheim, Helen Davis, Hillard Kaplan, Paul L. Hooper

ESI Publications

The Tsimane Health and Life History Project, an integrated bio-behavioral study of the human life course, is designed to test competing hypotheses of human life-history evolution. One aim is to understand the bidirectional connections between life history and social behavior in a highfertility, kin-based context lacking amenities of modern urban life (e.g. sanitation, banks, electricity). Another aim is to understand how a high pathogen burden influences health and well-being during development and adulthood. A third aim addresses how modernization shapes human life histories and sociality. Here we outline the project’s goals, history, and main findings since its inception in 2002. …

Background: Fall injury is a leading cause of death and disability among older adults (Alamgir, 2012). Fall injury may result in fractures, infection and fear of movement. By reinforcing engagement in muscles used during balance and walking, seniors may avoid unnecessary falls within their homes and the community.

Setting/Target Population: West Marin is the largest rural area of Marin County, California and includes seven unincorporated communities. A large percentage of the elderly population who reside in West Marin live alone--thus suffering from isolation. Within the rural, isolated communities of West Marin, the rate of falls among the elderly …

Heart And Soul: A Phenomenology Of Dementia Spouse Caregivers’ Relationship Closeness, Elena Schjavland Apr 2017

Heart And Soul: A Phenomenology Of Dementia Spouse Caregivers’ Relationship Closeness, Elena Schjavland

Doctoral Dissertations

All persons with dementia exhibit combinations of cognitive impairment (memory loss and aphasia), functional losses (changes in activities of daily living), and neuropsychiatric disease manifestations (fluctuating moods, behaviors and psychoses). The spouse caregiver role and life are affected by these symptoms which can cause intimacy, reciprocity, and communication issues, and frequently result in the caregiver’s feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, and embarrassment. Yet caregivers somehow manage to reconstruct and maintain a closeness as a couple.

Relationship closeness (RC) found in all marriages is simply depicted as the quality of the communal and emotional bond between husband and wife. Limited research demonstrates …

Network Exploration Of Correlated Multivariate Protein Data For Alzheimer's Disease Association, Matthew J. Lane Apr 2017

Network Exploration Of Correlated Multivariate Protein Data For Alzheimer's Disease Association, Matthew J. Lane

Theses

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is difficult to diagnose by using genetic testing or other traditional methods. Unlike diseases with simple genetic risk components, there exists no single marker determining as to whether someone will develop AD. Furthermore, AD is highly heterogeneous and different subgroups of individuals develop the disease due to differing factors. Traditional diagnostic methods using perceivable cognitive deficiencies are often too little too late due to the brain having suffered damage from decades of disease progression. In order to observe AD at early stages prior to the observation of cognitive deficiencies, biomarkers with greater accuracy are required. By using …

Event Centrality And Bereavement Symptomatology: The Moderating Role Of Meaning Made, Benjamin W. Bellet Apr 2017

Event Centrality And Bereavement Symptomatology: The Moderating Role Of Meaning Made, Benjamin W. Bellet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The centrality of a loss to a bereaved individual's identity is associated with greater symptomatology, whereas meaning made of a loss is associated with positive outcomes. This paper examines meaning made as a moderator of the relationship between event centrality and symptomatology. Our sample consisted of 204 bereaved undergraduate university students. Centrality was assessed using the Centrality of Events Scale (CES), meaning made was assessed using the Integration of Stressful Life Experiences Scale (ISLES), and symptomatology was assessed using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian (PCL-C) and Inventory of Complicated Grief-Revised (ICG-R). Meaning made had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between …

Increasing Global Context In Social Work Education: Role Of Internationally Experienced Faculty, Sarah Dababnah Phd, Mph, Msw, Sara Goodkind Phd, Msw, Caren J. Frost Phd, Mph, Jody K. Olsen Phd, Msw

Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development

The infusion of global social work concepts into social work curricula enhances the educational experience and understanding of practice, policy, and research for students at all levels. Having faculty members who participated in global work augments the presentation of these concepts in ways that connect to student learning. Yet, no known research has investigated the role of internationally experienced faculty in promoting a global perspective in social work education and practice. One mechanism for obtaining global experience is through service in the U.S. Peace Corps, an organization that has been available for U.S. citizens to serve their country since the …

The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner In Missouri: An Analysis Of Needs Assessment, Jessica L. Mann

Dissertations

Introduction: Due to an increasing number of acutely ill pediatric patients and changing healthcare demands, there is an even greater need for nurse practitioners (NPs) to work in the area of pediatric acute care (AC). There is a lack of alignment of education and certification with the scope of practice of the AC Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP). The development and implementation of a graduate level AC PNP program in Missouri will support the alignment of education, clinical training, and certification with the scope of practice of the AC PNP and improve access to a quality program for nurses that currently …

Quality Of Life Research And Methodology: Developing A Measure For Alaska Native Peoples, Maria Crouch Apr 2017

Quality Of Life Research And Methodology: Developing A Measure For Alaska Native Peoples, Maria Crouch

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

Quality of life (QOL) is often complicated by global measures that ignore the uniqueness of culture and context. The research is inundated with Western influence and colonized approaches, and indigenous ways of knowing are often overlooked and devalued. Diverse methodologies are a first step in stakeholder collaboration; mixed-methods research and Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) are a means of capturing the lived realities and worldviews of indigenous populations. These approaches allow for Alaska Native (AN) voice to be present in all aspects of the research process. A culturally relevant and sound measure of QOL for AN peoples must incorporate the …
