Monstrous Souls Imprisoned In Monstrous Flesh: James Baldwin's Discourse Of God, Power, And Love From Go Tell It On The Mountain To The Amen Corner, Naomi Mcpeters
English
In the middle decades of the twentieth century, James Baldwin offered a critique of a corrupt church framework in a way that differed from other black writers and social activists of his time, particularly in how he deals with racial attitudes within the black church and white Christianity’s tendency to scapegoat black Americans. Baldwin’s first novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain, and his last work to deal with the church, The Amen Corner, show figures of power within the black church who have abused their positions and betrayed those under their authority. He exposes the failure of religious power …

Environmental Factors: Honors Student’S Level Of Physical Activity And Exercise, Shelby Hyre
Honors Projects
Introduction: This study was undertaken to determine whether Bowling Green State University (BGSU) provided an environment that encouraged physical activity and exercise with Honors students (HS). The Trans-theoretical model was used to determine the intent/behavior related to participation in physical activity and exercise. Methods: A computer-based survey was distributed to all HS (N=909). The survey was derived from three previously published surveys. Results: Data were reduced and visually inspected for trends. The response rate was 29.2%. In general, HS were physical active (~70%) and/or exercised (~90%). Distance from the exercise facility did not seem to be important. The HS seemed …

Using Music With Intuitive Interface As A Catalyst To Improve Social Engagement Among Elders At An Assisted Living Facility, Vishwam Rajagopal
Theses - ALL
My thesis explores the use of music as a catalyst to improve social engagement among elders at an assisted living facility. In order to increase engagement I am exploring intuitive interface.
The design is an interactive interface which facilitates participation from remote location thereby increasing engagement. The design involves the other residents, part of the art group in Menorah Park to participate in creating the interface, thereby widening the social networks of the elders and creating more meaningful engagement.
Stereotype Threat In Higher Education: The Role Of Psychological Capital On Student Satisfaction And Commitment, Lei J. Shirase
Stereotype Threat In Higher Education: The Role Of Psychological Capital On Student Satisfaction And Commitment, Lei J. Shirase
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Stereotype threat refers to being at risk or confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative group stereotype about one's group. Past research has linked stereotype threat to a multitude of detrimental outcomes including decreased test performance, the drainage of cognitive resources, and increased stress levels. However, many of these findings were confined to laboratory settings and focused only on immediate effects. Research on stereotype threat framed as a macro-level product in a non-laboratory setting is limited at this time. In an attempt to bridge this gap, the present study examined the lingering effects of stereotype threat on minority satisfaction / commitment in …

Utilizing Tranexamic Acid To Reduce Blood Transfusion In Hip Fractures, Katherine Balzano-Cowan, Morgan Guerrette
Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones
Minimizing perioperative blood loss during orthopedic surgery has proven challenging for providers. Perioperative utilization of antifibrinolytic pharmacologic interventions, such as tranexamic acid (TXA), has been demonstrated as a safe and effective technique for decreasing blood loss and allogenic blood transfusion rates. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved on-label indications of TXA are for use in short-term treatment of hemophilia patients undergoing dental extractions and in management of patients experiencing menorrhagia (Mayeux, Alwon, Collins, & Hewer, 2016). Despite the current limited scope of FDA approval for TXA, use in elective surgery with otherwise clotting-uncompromised patients is not a new …
The Effects Of Pain On Informed Consent, Bryan Aja
The Effects Of Pain On Informed Consent, Bryan Aja
Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones
It is common for providers to withhold pain medication as opposed to treating pain prior to obtaining informed consent due to the concern of invalid informed consent. Pain’s influence on cognition can significantly impact the cognitive domains required to obtain valid informed consent. Determining if a patient has the capacity or competence to participate in the informed consent process has medical, ethical, and legal implications. The medical use of competence and capacity is not equivalent to the legal use of the same terminology. Legal implications concerning consent include signing consent while in duress or pain, signing under the influence of …
The Influence Of Participation In Socially Engaging Or Complex Physical Activities On Executive Function Among Older Adults, Lyndsie M. Koon
The Influence Of Participation In Socially Engaging Or Complex Physical Activities On Executive Function Among Older Adults, Lyndsie M. Koon
Dissertations
The preservation of cognitive function is of particular importance for the maintenance of independence and functional autonomy for older adults (Hertzog, Kramer, Wilson, & Lindenberger, 2008). Physical activity is a behavioral intervention that contributes to mental and physical health; it has also been found to promote cognitive function across a lifespan. Cognitive processes that assist with goal-directed behavior to successfully complete everyday tasks known as executive functions are susceptible to physical activity participation especially among youth, adolescent, and older adult populations. Various aspects of the physical activity context might help mediate improvements to executive function including the task complexity of …
The Impact Of Visual Impairments On Mobility Performance In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Lauren Andrew, Talia Davis, Christian Johnson
The Impact Of Visual Impairments On Mobility Performance In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Lauren Andrew, Talia Davis, Christian Johnson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background and Purpose: Falls are a major concern for elderly adults and can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being. Declines in vision with aging may be related to the development of fear of falling (FOF) and impaired mobility. It is possible that impaired vision due to common eye diseases can increase the FOF avoidance behavior and affect mobility function in this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation among visual impairment, mobility performance, and FOF avoidance behavior in older adults. Methods: Inclusion criteria for eligible participants were: 50 years of age and older, …

Gait And Balance In Alzheimer's Disease: A Retrospective Analysis Across Varying Levels Of Cognitive Impairment, Diana Contreras, Jessica Heim, Jun Nelson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: It was once thought that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affected mostly cognition with minor motor impairment; however, it is becoming apparent that motor impairment may also be a prominent feature. Determining the extent of motor impairments throughout the continuum of cognitive impairment is critical in developing timely interventions for this population. Purpose/Hypothesis: The aim of this study was to gain a greater understanding of motor impairment in AD by exploring the relationships among gait, balance, and falls. Specifically, we explored the association of fall history to measures of cognition and performance-based balance measures in individuals with AD. We hypothesized that …
Functional Limitation And Depressive Symptomatology: Considering Perceived Stigma And Discrimination Within A Stress And Coping Framework, Robyn Lewis Brown
Functional Limitation And Depressive Symptomatology: Considering Perceived Stigma And Discrimination Within A Stress And Coping Framework, Robyn Lewis Brown
Sociology Faculty Publications
This study examines whether perceived stigma and discrimination moderate the associations between functional limitation, psychosocial coping resources, and depressive symptoms among people with physical disabilities. Using two waves of data from a large community study including a representative sample of persons with physical disabilities (N = 417), an SEM-based moderated mediation analysis was performed. Mediation tests demonstrate that mastery significantly mediates the association between functional limitation and depressive symptoms over the study period. Moderated mediation tests reveal that the linkage between functional limitation and mastery varies as a function of perceived stigma and experiences of major discrimination and day-to-day discrimination, …
Off-The-Shelf Formative Assessments To Help Each Student Develop Toward A Professional Formation/Ethical Professional Identity Learning Outcome Of An Internalized Commitment To The Student's Own Professional Development, Neil Hamilton
Mercer Law Review
With the shift in American Bar Association (ABA) accreditation standards to emphasize learning outcomes, all law schools will be slowly moving away from structure-and-process based legal education (exposure to specific content for specified periods of time, such as a four credit one semester contracts course) to competency-based legal education (focus on the ultimate competencies needed for excellent service to the clients and the legal system, such as competence in career-long professional development). A large number of law schools are adopting what the next section of this Article defines as competency-based professional-formation or ethical- professional-identity learning outcomes. The specific focus of …
Male Urinary Incontinence: A Critical Appraisal Of The Literature With Practice Recommendations, Deborah J. Forcht
Male Urinary Incontinence: A Critical Appraisal Of The Literature With Practice Recommendations, Deborah J. Forcht
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Urinary Incontinence (UI) is a debilitating medical condition that affects individuals’ quality of life. People with this condition describe decreased enjoyment of sexual activity, as well as increased risk of experiencing depression, and anxiety. Data show that incontinence is less prevalent in men than women, which may explain the dearth of studies focusing specifically on men. As men age, their rate of suffering from UI increases from 4.8% at ages 19 to 44 to over 21% by the age of 65 years. Additionally, men who suffer from permanent UI are more likely to be institutionalized compared to those without UI …

Doctoral Projects
This study was part of a quality improvement effort of a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) to develop and establish an antimicrobial stewardship program to comply with recently enacted California State Senate Bill 361 (SB 361), which went into effect January l, 2017 (Skilled nursing facilities, 2015). The division of the facility into two sections, one staffed largely by Licensed Vocational Nurses (L VNs) and another staffed largely by Registered Nurses (RNs) provided an study opportunity that easily differentiated the licensed nurses. This study used three methods: 1) an educational intervention to licensed nurses, 2) a post-educational intervention survey of licensed …
Validation Of The Six-Minute Walk Test For Predicting Peak Oxygen Consumption Cancer Survivors, Alexandra Nicole Schumacher
Validation Of The Six-Minute Walk Test For Predicting Peak Oxygen Consumption Cancer Survivors, Alexandra Nicole Schumacher
Master's Theses
Exercise improves cardiovascular function in cancer survivors (CS) suffering from treatment-related toxicities, such as decreased peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). Establishing valid assessment protocols that determine VO2peak are essential for developing individualized exercise prescriptions for cancer rehabilitation programs. The University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute (UNCCRI) has developed a valid cancer-specific VO2peak treadmill protocol to address this need. The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is an exercise assessment used in many populations with chronic disease to predict VO2peak but it is not clear whether this test accurately assesses VO2peak in CS. The 6MWT is simple, inexpensive, and representative of daily living …

Dehydration In Nursing Home Residents: A Meta-Analysis Of Causes Of Dehydration, Implications, And Those Most At Risk., Carolyn Grace Miller
Honors College
Dehydration in nursing home and long term care facility residents is frequently dismissed
and not treated as a primary concern. However, research has shown that prolonged dehydration in the elderly can result in serious health and cognitive issues. Due to deteriorating physiological conditions and preexisting diseases, dehydration will further complicate a patient’s health condition and exacerbate certain symptoms, lowering overall quality of life. There are a number of underlying factors which contribute to a patient’s hydration status. Research has identified physical, mental and behavioral factors all play a significant role in the willingness and capability of patients to be properly …

Falls are a significant concern for community-dwelling older adults (OAs), with one in four OAs reporting a fall every year. Occupational therapy students collaborated with first responders of the Novato Fire District to identify gaps in fall prevention community outreach programs and found that many interventions lack an interactive or individualized approach. Based on the gap analysis and current literature, seven education modules were developed to address key risk factors including home safety hazards, polypharmacy, fear of falling, and strength and balance exercises. Thirty community-dwelling OAs participated in the education modules that were implemented at two senior community sites in …

The Role Of Social Location In Coping With Caregiving, Jacqueline Ragin
The Role Of Social Location In Coping With Caregiving, Jacqueline Ragin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A salient concern stemming from population aging is the expected rise in demand for informal family caregivers for diseases impacting the elderly, including dementia (MMMI 2010; NIA and WHO 2011). Studies of caregiver well-being often problematize the sociodemographic caregivers (e.g. gender, marital status) while caregiver intervention studies typically focus on the program itself (Gallagher-Thompson et al., 2008; Rabinowitz et al., 2006; Shulz et al., 2003). In this dissertation I unite these two bodies of caregiver research and examine how the sociodemographic characteristics of participants in a caregiver intervention program relate to the program’s effectiveness. I use secondary data from the …

Working With Mental Illness And The Preparation Of Social Workers, Destini Triplett
Honors Theses
Social workers are often the front line responders for individuals with mental illness. However, there has been limited research related to how social workers are prepared, what the best practices are, and what suggestions have been made to improve preparation in this kind of setting. This research study included a cross-sectional mixed methods study examining the knowledge and preparation of social work professionals as well as recommendations for improving education. The results indicated that social work educators and professionals are competent in their knowledge of mental health. The qualitative responses indicated three overarching themes: (1) confidence in abilities but acknowledgement …

Relative Effects Of Sleep Hygiene Behavior And Physical Exercise On Sleep Quality, Austin Dopp
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Numerous studies have shown the relationship between sleep and overall health. A common measure of sleep is sleep quality which has been shown to be influenced by a variety of factors such as physical activity, diet, stress, social engagement, cognitive stimulating, and sleep hygiene behaviors. Data was analyzed from a previous study to determine whether trying to change one’s sleep would improve sleep quality and if this was more effective than physical exercise. A group of 104 individuals, randomized to the treatment group, were asked to log their daily activities, via smartphone app, within these six behavioral domains for six …

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is known for its oncogenic potential and has been found to be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It has also been postulated that HCV may play a role in the development of other extrahepatic solid tumors of other organs of the body since it has been isolated from the vessel wall, kidney, and oral mucosa. In this article, we have reviewed epidemiological studies that have been done to look into the relationship of HCV with nonliver solid cancers of the pancreas, thyroid, renal, oral cavity, breast, and lung and nonpancreatic gastrointestinal cancers. Based …

Commuting Away: The Experiences Of Rns Who Live In Rural Communities And Commute Away For Employment In Non-Rural Communities, Laurie Jo Johansen
Commuting Away: The Experiences Of Rns Who Live In Rural Communities And Commute Away For Employment In Non-Rural Communities, Laurie Jo Johansen
Nursing Capstones
A lack of healthcare providers, including RNs, creates barriers for the U.S. rural population to access adequate healthcare services. One contributing factor to the scarcity in rural areas is the increasing numbers of RNs commuting away from rural communities for employment—14% in 1980 to 37% in 2004 (Skillman, Palazzo, Doescher, & Butterfield, 2012).
This descriptive phenomenology study investigated the experiences of RNs living in rural communities who commuted away to non-rural settings for employment. Purposeful sampling with snowballing was used to recruit 16 RNs for the study, allowing for understanding a rich variation in the professional experiences of RNs, as …
