Purpose: This retrospective study was conducted at the Marquette University School of Dentistry to (1) characterize the implant patient population in a predoctoral clinic, (2) describe the implants inserted, and (3) provide information on implant failures.

Materials and Methods: The study cohort included 1091 patients who received 1918 dental implants between 2004 and 2012, and had their implants restored by a crown or a fixed dental prosthesis. Data were collected from patient records, entered in a database, and summarized in tables and figures. Contingency tables were prepared and analyzed by a chi-squared test. The cumulative survival probability of implants was …

Effect Of An Aquatic Environment On Dual-Task Performance In Older Adults, Devin Patterson Aug 2017

Effect Of An Aquatic Environment On Dual-Task Performance In Older Adults, Devin Patterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Background: Older adults tend to have difficulty maintaining balance. It has been suggested that the aquatic environment may provide a safer and more challenging alternative to land for balance training. It has also been suggested that the performance of a dual cognitive-balance task paradigm may increase the competition for cortical resources needed to maintain balance. There is a need to evaluate the influence of an aquatic environment on the performance of a combined cognitive and motor task paradigm in older adults. Purpose: To assess the effects of an aquatic environment on the performance of cognitive and motor tasks in older …

Religiosity And Chastity Among Single Young Adults And Married Adults, Sam A. Hardy, Brian J. Willoughby Aug 2017

Religiosity And Chastity Among Single Young Adults And Married Adults, Sam A. Hardy, Brian J. Willoughby

Faculty Publications

The purpose of the present study was to present theological, philosophical, and psychological arguments for chastity as a virtue, and then test an empirical model linking religiosity to outcomes by way of values about chastity. Specifically, we tested a mediation model linking religiosity to outcomes via chastity values (beliefs about the importance of waiting until marriage to have sex and importance of sex within marriage as a bonding experience). This model was tested with a sample of single young adults (4,188) and a sample of married adults (2,531). Among single young adults, religiosity positively predicted abstinence beliefs, and abstinence beliefs …

Managing Sensor Systems For Early Detection Of Mild Cognitive Impairment In Community Elderly: Lessons Learned And Future Work, Boon Thai Ng, Hwee-Pink Tan, Hwee Xian Tan Aug 2017

Managing Sensor Systems For Early Detection Of Mild Cognitive Impairment In Community Elderly: Lessons Learned And Future Work, Boon Thai Ng, Hwee-Pink Tan, Hwee Xian Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The aging population is a pertinent issue faced by governments globally. One of the most common and costly health issues associated with the aging population is cognitive decline, leading up to dementia. In this paper, we describe a non-intrusive, continuous and scalable system for early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in the elderly, which enables early medical interventions to be provided. We focus on the system design and feature extraction of the sensor system, to validate our hypothesis of the use of sensor systems for early detection of MCI. Lessons learned from deploying the sensor system is presented, together …

Aging In Myanmar, John Knodel, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan Aug 2017

Aging In Myanmar, John Knodel, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This spotlight provides an overview of thesituation of older persons in Myanmar, an under-studied country ofover-50-million population. Myanmar is of particular interest to researchersand policy makers, given its overall level of poverty and modestly rapidpopulation aging. Research on older persons, while increasing in recent years, remains sparse. Empirical evidence indicates that Myanmar older persons are inrelatively poorer health compared to those in neighboring countries. Many livein abject poverty and depend on their families for material support.Coresidence is very common and facilitates reciprocal exchanges acrossgenerations. Looking ahead, Myanmar confronts important challenges includingdemographic shifts that reduce availability of family support for older personsand …

Prolonged Growth Hormone/Insulin/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Nutrient Response Signaling Pathway As A Silent Killer Of Stem Cells And A Culprit In Aging, Mariusz Ratajczak, Andrzej Bartke, Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz Aug 2017

Prolonged Growth Hormone/Insulin/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Nutrient Response Signaling Pathway As A Silent Killer Of Stem Cells And A Culprit In Aging, Mariusz Ratajczak, Andrzej Bartke, Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz

NYMC Faculty Publications

The dream of slowing down the aging process has always inspired mankind. Since stem cells are responsible for tissue and organ rejuvenation, it is logical that we should search for encoded mechanisms affecting life span in these cells. However, in adult life the hierarchy within the stem cell compartment is still not very well defined, and evidence has accumulated that adult tissues contain rare stem cells that possess a broad trans-germ layer differentiation potential. These most-primitive stem cells-those endowed with pluripotent or multipotent differentiation ability and that give rise to other cells more restricted in differentiation, known as tissue-committed stem …

Enhancing The Well-Being Of Older Adults And Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities Through Participation In An Intergenerational Community Garden: Participatory Action Research, Diane L. Keen Jul 2017

Enhancing The Well-Being Of Older Adults And Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities Through Participation In An Intergenerational Community Garden: Participatory Action Research, Diane L. Keen

Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations

The purpose of this Participatory Action Research (PAR) study was to discover ways to enhance well-being in young adults with DD and older adults in the Oak Grove community. This dissertation details how PAR was used in the Oak Grove community to identify ways to enhance purpose and meaningful activity for older adults while developing positive relationships with younger adults with DD through qualitative methods.

Ryff and Keyes (1995) discovered that although some elements of well-being remain stable as a person ages, purpose-in-life drops significantly in older adults. In addition, young adults with developmental disabilities (DD) lack meaningful relationships, which …

Right Time In Medication Administration: A Multifaceted Concept, Juliana J. Brixey, William Scott Erdley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: The medication administration process is a five-step procedure entailing prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring. Medication administration involves giving a pharmacological agent, such as a drug, to a patient or client. Within medication administration the patient expects the right medication, in the right dose, to be at the right time, and by the right route. ‘Right time", which is clearly identified as an important component of the medication administration process, should therefore be clearly defined as well achievable. ‘Right time" also implies a measurable period of time. The literature does not clearly define ‘right time" instead defining through linking …

Association Between Age-Related Hearing Loss And Disability In Older Adults: A Systematic Review, Tzu-Chia Lin, Miaofen Yen Jul 2017

Association Between Age-Related Hearing Loss And Disability In Older Adults: A Systematic Review, Tzu-Chia Lin, Miaofen Yen

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the loss of hearing or proportional to the degree of hearing impairment that gradually occurs as we grow older. ARHL management also consumes an increasing portion of healthcare expenditures given the rising mean age of people. Previous studies have investigated the association of ARHL and disability in older adults, but the results are inconsistent. However, identifying potentially modifiable risk factors such as hearing loss would provide a substantial public health benefit. Therefore, the aim of the study was to comprehensively evaluate the evidence connecting ARHL to disability in older adults.

Methods: Studies were identified …
