Unobtrusive Monitoring To Detect Depression For Elderly With Chronic Illnesses, Jung-Yoon Kim, Na Liu, Hwee Xian Tan, Chao-Hsien Chu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mental health related disorders are common diseases, especially among the elder. Among the various mental health diseases, one potential threat to ageing-in-place is the risk of depression. In this paper, we propose a simple unobtrusive sensing system using passive infra-red motion sensors to monitor the activities of daily living of elderly, who are living alone. A feature extraction module comprising of three layers-states, events, and activities, and the corresponding algorithms are proposed to extract features. Four popular classification models-neural network, C4.5 decision tree, Bayesian network, and support vector machine are then applied to detect the severity of depression. We implement …

Disability, institutionalization, and loss of independence may be directly caused or exacerbated by physical inactivity and obesity. The purpose of the current cross-sectional survey was to explore the impact of gender and obesity on functional ability tasks, physical activity, and psychosocial factors in older adults. Participants comprised 964 University retirees (55% female, mean age = 75.3 years, SD = 6.7 years) with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 26.1 kg/m2 (SD = 4.7 kg/m2). Results revealed significant gender and BMI interaction effects. Women were less active than men and obese women were most functionally impaired, …
An Exploratory Study Of Formal And Informal Help-Seeking Behavior Among Married Individuals Who Are Thinking About Divorce, David Michael Simpson
An Exploratory Study Of Formal And Informal Help-Seeking Behavior Among Married Individuals Who Are Thinking About Divorce, David Michael Simpson
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research on marital help-seeking has often focused on formal approaches such as marital therapy or relationship education and there is a greater need to understand married individual's informal help-seeking behaviors. This study explores both formal and informal help-seeking behavior using a national sample of 745 participants who have thought about divorce within the past 6-months. Findings indicate these participants more often engaged in informal help-seeking approaches to repair their marriage. Of those sampled, only 25% engaged in marital therapy together and only 9% engaged in a marriage strengthening class while over 30% read a relationship themed self-help book or …

Exploration And Description Of Faith Community Nurses’ Documentation Practices And Perceived Documentation Barriers., Susan M. Dyess, Donna M. Callaghan, Andra S. Opalinski Dr.
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Purpose: Documentation within Faith Community Nursing is an expected aspect of the professional specialty but is under-studied. Findings in previously published studies suggest there is a lack of consistent documentation practices among FCNs. Therefore, the aim of this research study was to explore and describe documentation practices of FCNs, and identify the perceived barriers to documentation.
Methodology: This mixed methods research had both qualitative and quantitative components. The qualitative inquiry involved three live focus groups and three telephonic key informant interviews (n = 28). Conventional content analysis was used to examine all qualitative data. The quantitative inquiry involved a survey …

Exploring The Informational And Recreational Needs Of The Elderly: Library Users In Temperance Town, South Africa, Mae Kuscus Ms, Madeleine C. Fombad Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The need to access and use information is necessary in all stages of our physical and mental development. Although most elderly people continue to lead productive and active lives beyond retirement, they are often a neglected group of library users, treated with little dignity and respect. Temperance Town, Gordon’s Bay Library in Western Cape, South Africa is one of the “previously disadvantaged” community libraries that was affected by the injustices and discriminatory laws propagated by the apartheid government. As a result, a majority of the elderly persons in this community had very limited opportunities to obtain skills and education during …

Blacks/African Americans have been reported to be ~2–4 times more likely to develop clinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) compared to Whites. Unfortunately, study design challenges (e.g., recruitment bias), racism, mistrust of healthcare providers and biomedical researchers, confounders related to socioeconomic status, and other sources of bias are often ignored when interpreting differences in human subjects categorized by race. Failure to account for these factors can lead to misinterpretation of results, reification of race as biology, discrimination, and missed or delayed diagnoses. Here we provide a selected historical background, discuss challenges, present opportunities, and suggest considerations for studying health outcomes among racial/ethnic …

How Can We Enhance Elderly Health And Well-Being Through Various Forms Of Game-Based Activities?, Shaojia Chen
How Can We Enhance Elderly Health And Well-Being Through Various Forms Of Game-Based Activities?, Shaojia Chen
Theses - ALL
The health of an aging population is gradually turning into a topic of focus not only domestically but also internationally. The target group of this study is older Americans who are 65 and older. More specifically, elders who lack the motivation to exercise. Currently, related research has shown regular physical exercise is critical for elders to keep fit. However, participating in regular exercise can be challenging for older adults with physical limitations, and it’s often difficult to motivate oneself. There has been an expanded focus on the game design intended to motivate elders to contribute to their overall well-being.Through qualitative …

"Staying Alive" - The Plight Of Our Older Homeless In Syracuse, New York, Yuying Wei
Theses - ALL
The purpose of this project is to explore the services needed by elders
who first became homeless in later life. The U.S. Census Bureau projects
the elderly homeless population will increase by 33 percent by 2020.
Compared with younger counterparts, older homeless people are more
isolated and refuse to use traditional services. Findings from surveys,
observations and interviews suggest mobile outreach is an efficient
strategy to reach out to homeless people. For my design, I focused on
creating a mobile service system to help later life older homeless persons
to connect to the housing and services and then assisting them …

How Could We Transform Eating Alone Into More Of A Social Experience?, Ran Jing
Theses - ALL
Studies have revealed that living alone and eating alone lead to negative psy- chological impacts on older adults such
as feeling of loneliness, and nutrition problems such as apathy about the food and decreases in food consumption. I am studying the behavior of elders’ to- ward food by comparing their behavior while eating alone vs eating in groups. Elders living alone in an independent housing facility were interviewed and four of them completed surveys on food choice, dietary patterns and food related activities. Research results have shown that elders are less motivated to embrace food activities when they eat alone. …
Implementation And Evaluation Of A Preceptor/Mentorship Program During Orientation In A Long Term Care Facility: A Strategy To Increase Nursing Employee Satisfaction, Maria A. Painter
Doctoral Projects
High nursing turnover in long-term care (LTC) facilities is a significant problem that results in additional expenses, lower quality of patient care, increased adverse patient events, and decreased patient and nursing satisfaction. A structured orientation and supportive preceptors are protective factors in retaining nurses as well as increasing nursing job satisfaction and improving patient outcomes. The goal of this pilot project was to implement an evidence-based preceptor program for staff registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in an LTC facility to develop preceptors’ skills and preceptees’ orientation satisfaction. The preceptor development project facilitated by …

Informal Advocacy As A Way To Deep Learning: Brief Survey Of Two Undergraduate Classroom Activities, Dean D. Vondras
Perspectives In Learning
To enhance engagement and deepen learning in undergraduate courses that focus on adult development and aging, two informal advocacy classroom activities were created and surveyed. The surveys were brief empirical assessments of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activities, and contained closed- and open-ended questions. The first study investigated a PBL activity that addressed public policy and health care issues encountered by older adults and their families, and required students to create a detailed advocacy position supporting either the perspective of college students and young adults, or of a special group of older adults (e.g., cognitively impaired, chronically ill, etc). Results from Study …

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Dementia Patients Experiencing Agitation, Beata Prendergast
Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Dementia Patients Experiencing Agitation, Beata Prendergast
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Several studies suggest that nonpharmacological interventions are preferred for first-line therapy when managing symptoms such as agitation associated with dementia. Patients experiencing dementia most likely develop behavioral symptoms throughout the course of their illnesses. These symptoms include agitation, which affects their quality of life. Current pharmacological treatment modalities are not always effective, and thus the significant shift to address agitation through non-pharmacological interventions is necessary.
Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature was to explore the various research studies that have been conducted regarding several non-pharmacological interventions that can be beneficial in managing the dementia individual …

The honey bee is of paramount importance to humans in both agricultural and ecological settings. Honey bee colonies have suffered from increased attrition in recent years, stemming from complex interacting stresses. Defining common cellular stress responses elicited by these stressors represents a key step in understanding potential synergies. The proteostasis network is a highly conserved network of cellular stress responses involved in maintaining the homeostasis of protein production and function. Here, we have characterized the Heat Shock Response (HSR), one branch of this network, and found that its core components are conserved. In addition, exposing bees to elevated temperatures normally …

Developing A Simulation Program In A Concept-Based Curriculum, Nicole Harder
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
When the National Council of State Boards of Nursing released their simulation study in 2014, many nursing programs felt like they now had the support for the statement that properly planned and designed simulation-based experiences (SBE's) could replace traditional clinical practice hours. Our nursing program was no different and we set out on a project to replace 25% of all of our traditional clinical practice hours with simulation-based experiences. This was in parallel with designing a new concept based curriculum. The nursing program is a 4-year undergraduate nursing program with clinical practice occurring in years 2, 3 and 4.

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Low levels of nursing student engagement have been linked to heavy academic work loads that limit extracurricular activity. In a quest to meaningfully engage nursing students we developed the Student Crew in Simulation volunteer group. We were overwhelmed by the interest and number of applications we received to volunteer with us. Students were looking for engagement opportunities that reflected their interests, provided networking opportunities, and that would identify them as leaders among their peers. After the first semester we asked the Student Crew in Simulation to evaluate their experiences. The volunteers identified becoming a contact point between faculty and students, …

Early Marine Growth Patterns Of Situk River Steelhead, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Matthew R. Catterson
Fisheries
Steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss exhibit complex life-history patterns described by variable freshwater and marine residency periods, maturation patterns, and reproductive characteristics. Over 300 small populations of Steelhead are present in Southeast Alaska, and similar trends in abundance among these populations suggest the influence of population-regulating forces operating on a regional scale. The Situk River, near Yakutat, Alaska, supports the largest known population of Steelhead in Alaska. Stock assessment studies on this river have collected the longest set of biological data and scale samples for Steelhead in the state. For this study, retrospective scale pattern analysis of samples from Situk River Steelhead …
