Why do some forests produce biomass more efficiently than others? Variations in Carbon Use Efficiency (CUE: total Net Primary Production (NPP)/ Gross Primary Production (GPP)) may be due to changes in wood residence time (Biomass/NPPwood), temperature, or soil nutrient status. We tested these hypotheses in 14, one ha plots across Amazonian and Andean forests where we measured most key components of net primary production (NPP: wood, fine roots, and leaves) and autotrophic respiration (Ra; wood, rhizosphere, and leaf respiration). We found that lower fertility sites were less efficient at producing biomass and had higher rhizosphere respiration, …

The Internet is an important tool in the context of activity of women-entrepreneurs due to the possibility of flexible work organization, hence it facilitates the reconciliation of the parental role with professional activity. Therefore, it is advisable to study the awareness, the level of use and limitations on the use of various kinds of virtual tools and applications. This article is of a review and conceptual nature but also relies on the results of previous studies conducted by the authors.
The North American Quails, Partridges, And Pheasants, Paul A. Johnsgard
The North American Quails, Partridges, And Pheasants, Paul A. Johnsgard
Zea E-Books Collection
This book documents the biology of six species of New World quails that are native to North America north of Mexico (mountain, scaled, Gambel’s, California, and Montezuma quails, and the northern bobwhite), three introduced Old World partridges (chukar, Himalayan snowcock, and gray partridge), and the introduced common (ring-necked) pheasant. Collectively, quails, partridges, and pheasants range throughout all of the continental United States and the Canadian provinces. Two of the species, the northern bobwhite and ring-necked pheasant, are the most economically important of all North American upland game birds. All of the species are hunted extensively for sport and are highly …
Mobile Data Roaming And Incentives For Investment In Rural Broadband Infrastructure, James Prieger
Mobile Data Roaming And Incentives For Investment In Rural Broadband Infrastructure, James Prieger
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Mobile broadband Internet access is highly important to the American economy and millions of users. There were almost 200 million mobile broadband connections by the end of 2013 in the United States, far more than the number of fixed broadband connections (FCC, 2014a, Table 1). The economic activity created by the provision and usage of mobile broadband is sizeable, and has been documented at the national level (Gruber and Koutroumpis, 2011; Thompson and Garbacz, 2011; Katz, 2012) and specifically for rural areas (Whitacre, Gallardo, and Strover, 2014). The benefits of mobile broadband—and indeed the entire broadband ecosystem—depend on investment in …

An Analysis Of The Shore Beetle Communities Of Some Channelized Streams In Northwest Ohio (Coleoptera), Paul M. Holeski, Robert C. Graves
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The present shore beetle communities of some northwest Ohio streams channelized between 1937 and 1973 were studied. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were made to determine the effects of channelization on the community and the results are discussed. Ninety species, chiefly Carabidae, Heteroceridae and Staphylinidae, were collected; at least 20 not previously reported from Ohio. In addition, some species associations are noted.

Neighborhood Risk Factors For Obesity In The Detroit, Michigan Latino Community, Ivan E. Lebron
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Latinos, or individuals from the Caribbean, South America, and Central America (Santiago, 1996), are affected by a wide variety of health issues, and in particular, obesity. In the United States alone, more than 40% of Latino adults are obese, and almost 23% of Latino children between the ages of 2 to 19 suffer from obesity (Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). Latinos are ranked second behind African Americans in obesity rates in the United States (Ogden et al., 2014). This literature review will examine the historical and socio-economic factors that contribute to the high obesity …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Methods Used For Avoidance And Acceleration Of Developmental Mathematics Sequences In Community College, Steven Todd Travers
A Quantitative Analysis Of Methods Used For Avoidance And Acceleration Of Developmental Mathematics Sequences In Community College, Steven Todd Travers
Theses and Dissertations
Many developmental mathematics programs at community colleges in recent years have undergone a process of redesign in an attempt increase the historical poor rate of student successful completion of required developmental coursework. Various curriculum and instructional design models that incorporate methods of avoiding and accelerating the developmental mathematics requirements have been created in an effort to increase the retention and course completion rate of students placed in developmental mathematics programs. It is believed that developmental students need developmental mathematics courses in order to build a strong mathematical foundation; this will enable them to achieve their desired higher education goals. The …

WCU Campus Sustainability Initiatives
Historically, the college campus is organized around a central ‘Yard’ or evolves over time as a result of development and expansion. West Chester University is a product of the latter, growing to meet needs and curricula of the last 150 years, and doing an admirable job. Most of the walkways are accessible; there are large student gathering spaces; the Campus is open for public enjoyment; housing and recreation opportunities are varied; parking is ample for commuters, and a robust canopy of trees covers much of the Campus. The campus of the future is envisioned as a very different place, still …
The Impact Of Cause-Related Marketing On Global Consumers: A Meta-Analysis, Michelle Morin Rego
The Impact Of Cause-Related Marketing On Global Consumers: A Meta-Analysis, Michelle Morin Rego
Doctoral Dissertations
Cause-related marketing (CRM) is a growing area of corporate social responsibility that involves a joint venture between a for-profit brand and a nonprofit organization. Over the past 30 years, cause-related marketing research has expanded to all corners of the globe. Themes in CRM research include cause-brand fit, cause involvement, cultural values and beliefs, and the influence of CRM on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions. A series of bivariate meta-analyses were conducted using a random effects assumption to determine effect sizes in this field, and explain the variance in effects across a global body of literature. Results include the effect of …
Researching Peers And Disaster Vulnerable Communities: An Insider Perspective, Stern M. Kita
Researching Peers And Disaster Vulnerable Communities: An Insider Perspective, Stern M. Kita
The Qualitative Report
Conducting research among peers and communities that a researcher also serves may be both daunting and rewarding. Researching peers may make the researcher feel uncomfortable raising certain questions that are sensitive or that could be construed to be testing their competencies. This paper is inclined more towards showing that it is advantageous to be an insider, whose position can facilitate collection of information that could not have been accessed, or revealed to an outsider. The paper reports on fieldwork conducted in a low-income country in Sub-Sahara Africa as part of a doctoral study with communities affected by disasters and those …

In September 2016, Nicole Ludwig led a group of her neighbors in Germany to assist newly-arrived Syrian and Afghani refugees. The volunteers collected clothing and toys, organized activities and field trips for the refugee children, and taught them German. Later, the volunteers offered homework support and led library reading groups. For the adult refugees, the volunteers provided cultural assimilation instruction and cooking classes. While there were occasional challenges to working together, the volunteers and refugees fostered a collaborative system and even hosted a Christmas party, during which one elderly Syrian man said, “This is one of the best memories I …

Removing Dams, Constructing Science: Coproduction Of Undammed Riverscapes By Politics, Finance, Environment, Society And Technology, Zbigniew J. Grabowski, Ashlie Denton, Mary Ann Rozance, Marissa Matsler, Sarah Kidd
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Dam removal in the United States has continued to increase in pace and scope, transitioning from a dam-safety engineering practice to an integral component of many large-scale river restoration programmes. At the same time, knowledge around dam removals remains fragmented by disciplinary silos and a lack of knowledge transfer between communities of practice around dam removal and academia. Here we argue that dam removal science, as a study of large restoration-oriented infrastructure interventions, requires the construction of an interdisciplinary framework to integrate knowledge relevant to decision-making on dam removal. Drawing upon infrastructure studies, relational theories of coproduction of knowledge and …

Placing Marketing Orders To Optimize Transportation Rate Tiers, Jeffrey Cuartero
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques described herein can be utilized by online and offline retailers, and other organizations that use third party carriers, e.g., for package delivery. It is determined whether placing marketing or promotional orders during a particular period is likely to result in cost savings in a subsequent period. The savings are due to achieving a minimum order volume in a current period that results in qualifying for a rate discount from the carrier in the subsequent period. To ensure that marketing orders are successfully completed, marketing orders are opportunistically placed for specific items and designated stores are stocked with those items. …

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
For 12 months, nonresidents were intercepted at gas stations, rest areas, and airports and completed a questionnaire about the activities they participated in while visiting Montana. Results were compared to activities promoted by CVBs and travel regions in Montana. Visitor’s primary and favorite activity were highlighted by quarter. Results showed that while scenic driving was a top activity in all four quarters (mass tourism type activity), more niche-type activities became their favorite: skiing/snowboarding, day hiking, car/RV camping, watching wildlife, fly fishing, hunting, river rafting/floating, snowmobiling, and visiting breweries. Marketing and policy suggestions were provided.

“Symbols Are Important”: Nation-States And The Images On Our Money, John R. Katsion
“Symbols Are Important”: Nation-States And The Images On Our Money, John R. Katsion
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Visual rhetoric has been an area of growing interest for those within the communication field, and this study aims to add to that body of work. One area within the study of visual rhetoric is the everyday, mundane images produced by nation-states, and more narrowly, the images on a nation’s currency. Traditionally, scholars who study images on currency have seen them through the lens of state-as-pedagogue—in other words, that the state is using that “sacred space” to teach their citizenry. Political theorist and scholar Jacques E.C. Hymans (2204, 2010) challenges this notion, and instead posits that nation-states try to connect …

Technological Variability At Sibudu Cave: The End Of Howiesons Poort And Reduced Mobility Strategies After 62,000 Years Ago, Paloma De La Peña, Lyn Wadley
KIP Articles
We evaluate the cultural variation between the youngest Howiesons Poort layer (GR) and the oldest post-Howiesons Poort layers (RB-YA) of Sibudu Cave (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa). We first conducted a technological analysis, secondly we performed a cladistic study with all the technological traits and, finally, we compare the technological variability with other data from Sibudu (ochre, micromorphology, fauna and plant remains). The synapomorphies of the cladistical analysis show numerous lithic technological changes between the youngest Howiesons Poort and the oldest post-Howiesons Poort layers as previously concluded. However, some technological strategies that are present, yet uncommon, in the Howiesons Poort become abundant …

Quantification and evaluation of elemental distribution in forested ecosystems are key requirements to understand element fluxes and their relationship with hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the system. However, datasets supporting such a study on the catchment scale are still limited. Here we provide a dataset comprising spatially highly resolved distributions of 39 elements in soil profiles of a small forested headwater catchment in western Germany (http://teodoor.icg.kfa-juelich.de/ibg3searchportal2/dispatch?searchparams=freetext-Wuestebach&metadata.detail.view.id=7d37ae00-20f6-408e-8660-33bfba07c869) to gain a holistic picture of the state and fluxes of elements in the catchment. The elements include both plant nutrients and other metals and metalloids that were predominately derived from lithospheric or anthropogenic …
