A Nested Environmental Approach To Typhoid Epidemiology In Central Division, Fiji, Aaron Jenkins Jan 2017

A Nested Environmental Approach To Typhoid Epidemiology In Central Division, Fiji, Aaron Jenkins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many current disease threats involve interactions within and between nested subsystems of biological organisation. Typhoid fever is a serious disease threat in the South Pacific region, with Fiji reporting the highest annual number of cases, yet risk factors in this setting have been poorly studied. While localised behaviours have dominated perspectives on typhoid transmission, interactions between distal ecological conditions, conditions of the residential environment and localised behaviour deserve greater attention for their potential to influence transmission. This thesis demonstrates a nested approach to typhoid epidemiology using a fivefold methodology to explore how regional, river basin, residential, socio-cultural and behavioural subsystems …

The Land Still Speaks: Ni, Katitj!, Sandra Wooltorton, Pierre Horwitz, Len Collard Jan 2017

The Land Still Speaks: Ni, Katitj!, Sandra Wooltorton, Pierre Horwitz, Len Collard

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In this paper we reflect on land, language and law in Wiilman Noongar Boodjar (Country), which has recently become known as the Upper Blackwood River Catchment in the South West of Western Australia. By intertwining historical perspectives with Western science and Noongar katitjiny (knowledge and understandings, or rationality) we argue that this region is alive, that it does have a language and that there is a message to be heard. History shows that the voice of the land might be diminishing, but signs of a transformation are evident, where a conciliation of these voices enables real listening to ancient insights …

The Panopticon Kitchen: The Materiality Of Parental Surveillance In The Family Home, Donell Holloway Jan 2017

The Panopticon Kitchen: The Materiality Of Parental Surveillance In The Family Home, Donell Holloway

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This article examines the production and performance of parental surveillance of children’s internet activities within the family home. Through an analysis of qualitative interviews in the family homes of children aged from five to twelve years, the manner in which parents are positioned as ‘instruments of surveillance’ and the materiality of this surveillance are discussed. Parents’ worldly surveillance of their younger children’s internet use in Australian family homes can often be likened to Foucault’s panopticon, where the site of central inspection is often the family kitchen. This is because the physical positioning of spatial dimensions in the standard Australian home …

Ways Of Depicting: The Presentation Of One's Self As A Brand, Lelia Green, Richard Morrison, Andrew Ewing, Cathy Henkel Jan 2017

Ways Of Depicting: The Presentation Of One's Self As A Brand, Lelia Green, Richard Morrison, Andrew Ewing, Cathy Henkel

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The research question animating this article is: 'How does an individual creative worker re-present themselves as a contemporary - and evolving - brand?' Berger notes that the "principal aim has been to start a process of questioning" (5), and the raw material energising this exploration is the life's work of Richard Morrison, the creative director and artist who is the key moving force behind The Morrison Studio collective of designers, film makers and visual effects artists, working globally but based in London. The challenge of maintaining currency in this visually creative marketplace includes seeing what is unique about your potential …

The Highs And Lows Of Making A Bucket List - Quantifying Potential Mosquito Breeding Habitats In Metropolitan Backyards, Ram Sharan Lamichhane, Peter J. Neville, Jacques Oosthuizen, Kim Clark, Maria Fatouros, Shelley Beatty Jan 2017

The Highs And Lows Of Making A Bucket List - Quantifying Potential Mosquito Breeding Habitats In Metropolitan Backyards, Ram Sharan Lamichhane, Peter J. Neville, Jacques Oosthuizen, Kim Clark, Maria Fatouros, Shelley Beatty

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

While the development of land for residential housing along the Swan and Canning Rivers in Perth, WA, Australia has reduced natural mosquito breeding sites, the role of backyard container breeding remains a relatively unknown factor. Local Governments responsible for these areas focus management and control efforts on low lying, tidally driven mosquito habitats to control Aedes vigilax (Skuse) and Aedes camptorhynchus (Thomson) mosquitoes in an effort to reduce both the nuisance and disease risk to residents. In spite of their efforts, Local Governments continue to receive complaints regarding mosquito nuisance, even when environmental conditions do not favor hatching and development …

Towards Active Ageing: A Comparative Study Of Experiences Of Older Ghanaians In Australia And Ghana, Daniel Doh Jan 2017

Towards Active Ageing: A Comparative Study Of Experiences Of Older Ghanaians In Australia And Ghana, Daniel Doh

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Population ageing has become a central feature of the 21st century, as most countries search for economically viable strategies to support and manage their ageing populations to live in a dignified way. In 2002, the World Health Organisation (WHO) proposed the active ageing policy framework to guide countries to develop policies that promote the quality of life for their older people. However, the interpretation and application of the active ageing model in the literature and policy discussions are inconclusive on the most important elements that promote the quality of life of older people. The discussions have largely focused on health …

China's And India's Differing Investment Treaty And Dispute Settlement Experiences And Implications For Africa, Won Kidane Jan 2017

China's And India's Differing Investment Treaty And Dispute Settlement Experiences And Implications For Africa, Won Kidane

Faculty Publications

This Article examines China’s and India’s differing investment treaty and dispute settlement experiences and the resulting implications for Africa. It attempts to answer the question of whether there is evidence of China’s and India’s attempt to take advantage of the default structural imbalance enabled by centuries of international investment laws and institutions that favor the investor. The Article begins by presenting the background of the current economic reality and trends that necessitate the evaluation of the existing rules and institutions. It then presents a detailed assessment of this phenomenon by focusing on the investment cases brought against India for context, …

Urban Non-Timber Forest Products Stewardship Practices Among Foragers In Seattle, Washington (Usa), Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe, Lauren S. Urgenson, Dale Blahna, Lita P. Buttolph

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Our research seeks to expand the concept of urban environmental stewardship to include the everyday stewardship practices of urban nontimber forest products foragers. Ethnographic data from 58 urban foragers and 18 land stewards in the city of Seattle (USA) revealed that foragers reported using a variety of practices to enhance and minimize negative desirable species and their habitats. Many of these practices were identical to those practiced by restoration volunteers in formal programs and align with Seattle Parks Department management objectives. Foragers actively sought to learn more about what practices are sustainable; many mentored others in sustainable harvesting practices. Most …

Sedimentary Innovation: How Regulation Should Respond To Incremental Change, Cristie Ford Jan 2017

Sedimentary Innovation: How Regulation Should Respond To Incremental Change, Cristie Ford

All Faculty Publications

As captivating as paradigm-changing "radical" innovations may be, “sedimentary”, or incremental, innovation – incremental improvements based on imitation, tweaking, bricolage and diffusion – are in fact the main way in which innovation actually develops. In finance, sedimentary innovation is shaped by forces including structural and social networks, a strong first mover advantage, and collective action problems. This piece, which is Chapter 8 in a forthcoming book that considers financial innovation as a regulatory challenge, examines sedimentary innovation in particular. Like innovation generally, sedimentary innovation can profoundly undermine regulation across time. It can bury structures designed to contain it and can …

Property And Sovereignty: An Indian Reserve And A Canadian City, Douglas C. Harris Jan 2017

Property And Sovereignty: An Indian Reserve And A Canadian City, Douglas C. Harris

All Faculty Publications

Property rights, wrote Morris Cohen in 1927, are delegations of sovereign power. They are created by the state and operate to establish limits on its power. As such, the allocation of property rights is an exercise of sovereignty and a limited delegation of it. Sixty years later, Joseph Singer used Cohen’s conceptual framing in a critical review of developments in American Indian law. Where the US Supreme Court had the opportunity to label an American Indian interest as either a sovereign interest or a property interest, he argued, it invariably chose to the disadvantage of the Indians. Within Canada, Indigenous …

Determined To Make A Difference: A Qualitative Study Of College Women Student Leaders, Heather Yattaw Wagoner Jan 2017

Determined To Make A Difference: A Qualitative Study Of College Women Student Leaders, Heather Yattaw Wagoner

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

While research has grown related to the experiences of gender and leadership in the workplace, little research exists on the experiences of gender and leadership in collegiate student organization settings. This study explores the experiences of college women holding executive leadership roles in highly visible on-campus registered student organizations. More specifically, the study seeks understanding of how social role expectancies interfaced with the women’s perceptions and experiences as college leaders.

Data were generated with undergraduate women leaders at a large, public research institution in the southeast during the fall of 2014 using qualitative methods including individual interviews, group interviews, and …

"A World To Suit Themselves": Student-Constructed Narratives And The Hidden History Of College Life, David M. Brown Jan 2017

"A World To Suit Themselves": Student-Constructed Narratives And The Hidden History Of College Life, David M. Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

An individual’s years in college are a time of trial and transformation. This dissertation examined college students’ self-created accounts of their time in college in order to identify students’ significant meaning-making activities during those years. Four primary areas of student life were investigated: the rules that students were expected to adhere to, the ways in which students and their class cohorts antagonized one another, hazing, and class competitions.

A comparative historical approach was used to analyze student-created accounts of college life in the years 1871-1941. Archival research at a geographically diverse sample of fourteen colleges and universities provided primary source …

Self-Authoring Gender Performance: A Narrative Analysis Of Gay Undergraduate Men, Casey Shadix

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

The perspectives of gay men on college and university campuses is informed by a rich gay social history and extensive roots of community politics. The experiences of gay undergraduate men have been illuminated in segmented ways in scholarly literature to date. This narrative inquiry develops and advances those efforts by exploring how gay undergraduate men construct, experience, and make meaning of their gender as a population ascribing to both liberationist and assimilationist viewpoints. Data for this qualitative study were collected at one public, four-year research university in the southeastern United States in the fall 2015 semester using recorded personal interviews …

Sector Agnosticism And The Coming Transformation Of Education Law, Nicole S. Garnett Jan 2017

Sector Agnosticism And The Coming Transformation Of Education Law, Nicole S. Garnett

Vanderbilt Law Review

Over the past two decades, the landscape of elementary and secondary education in the United States has shifted dramatically, due to the emergence and expansion of privately provided, but publicly funded, schooling options (including both charter schools and private school choice devices like vouchers, tax credits, and educational savings accounts). This transformation in the delivery of K12 education is the result of a confluence of factors-discussed in detail below-that increasingly lead education reformers to support efforts to increase the number of high quality schools serving disadvantaged students across all three educational sectors, instead of focusing exclusively on reforming urban public …

An Ocean Between Us: The Implications Of Inconsistencies Between The Navigational Laws Of Coastal Arctic Council Nations And The United Nations Convention On The Law Of The Sea For Arctic Navigation, Laura C. Williams

Vanderbilt Law Review

Appraisal rights are codified by section 262 of the Delaware General Corporation Law ("DGCL"), which grants dissenting target shareholders in a merger the right to seek judicially determined fair value for their shares.' Appraisal rights therefore aim to protect dissenting shareholders from majority expropriation. 2 However, a new class of shareholders has emerged, testing the bounds of this remedy. "Appraisal arbitrageurs" are hedge funds who seek to exploit the once seldom- used appraisal remedy by buying target company stock after the announcement of the merger solely to pursue appraisal. These appraisal arbitrageurs have fueled the ongoing resurgence of appraisal litigation, …

Mapping The Nonstationary Internal Tide With Satellite Altimetry, Edward Zaron Jan 2017

Mapping The Nonstationary Internal Tide With Satellite Altimetry, Edward Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

t Temporal variability of the internal tide has been inferred from the 23 year long combined records of the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, and Jason-2 satellite altimeters by combining harmonic analysis with an analysis of along-track wavenumber spectra of sea-surface height (SSH). Conventional harmonic analysis is first applied to estimate and remove the stationary components of the tide at each point along the reference ground tracks. The wavenumber spectrum of the residual SSH is then computed, and the variance in a neighborhood around the wavenumber of the mode-1 baroclinic M2 tide is interpreted as the sum of noise, broadband nontidal processes, and …

Metroscape

In this edition of the Periodic Atlas, we provide a glimpse of housing construction that has been permitted over the past few years, with a focus on multifamily housing. Focusing on recently-permitted units provides a perspective on how the newest housing is and will be different from existing housing. The type of housing that will be built, where it is built, its characteristics, and its price will shape the Portland region in the years to come.

All-Lands Management: Convening Communities And Their Lands Around Fire Management, Jodie T. Pixley Jan 2017

All-Lands Management: Convening Communities And Their Lands Around Fire Management, Jodie T. Pixley

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Broadly defined, All-lands Management (ALM) is a land management approach involving collaborative, science-based ecosystem restoration at the landscape scale, across ownership and jurisdictional boundaries. My research investigates collaborative groups working to reduce wildfire risk by applying ALM. Fire risk in the Pacific West (California and Oregon) is increasing in severity and extent due to fire suppression and is exacerbated by the effects of drought, climate change, and expanding residential development. For decades federal, state, and local entities have expressed the need to work collaboratively, across boundaries and ownerships to reintroduce fire back onto the landscape to restore forest resiliency. This …

Rural Adults In Education: Why Don't They Come? A Curriculum Addressing Dispositional Barriers To Participation, Erica A. Silver Jan 2017

Rural Adults In Education: Why Don't They Come? A Curriculum Addressing Dispositional Barriers To Participation, Erica A. Silver

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Rural adults participate in education at lower rates than their urban counterparts. If rural communities and their residents are to compete and stay viable in a global economy that demands life-long learning, it is imperative to increase adult motivation to engage in education. Non- participation by rural adults will be examined through an investigation of the concept of rural, rural education, participants and non-participants, and barriers to and motivations for participation. Lastly, Wlodkowski’s (2008) Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching will be explored as a framework to present a learning-to-learn curriculum addressing local barriers to rural adult non-participation and promoting …

Voices Of Cully: A Case Study Of The Living Cully Weatherization And Home Repair Project 2.0, Lucy J.T. Cultrera

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Cully neighborhood is situated in the Northeast quadrant of Portland, Oregon. It is 2.75 square mile plot of land and home to roughly 13,000 people. In addition to being one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Portland, it is the most densely populated, with the smallest amount of parkland per capita. Over the last two decades, home value has increased 203% in Cully, compared to a 90% citywide increase. Amidst these development trends are stories of incredible resilience, resistance and activism from the affected community. My project is a case study of one anti-displacement initiative, which was developed and …
