A Human-Centered Platform For Hiv Infection Reduction In New York: Development And Usage Analysis Of The Ending The Epidemic (Ete) Dashboard, Ashish Joshi, Chioma Amadi, Benjamin Katz, Sarah Kulkarni, Denis Nash
Publications and Research
Background: Dashboards have been increasingly used in clinic-based interventions, such as clinical performance improvement and monitoring risk of hospital readmissions, and are now gaining traction in population-based interventions, especially in disease assessment.
Objective: We describe the design, development, and usage analysis of a geovisualization dashboard, the Ending the Epidemic (ETE) Dashboard. The ETE dashboard is a tool developed to track New York’s progress towards achieving the goal of its ETE Initiative, to reduce new HIV infections from 3000 per year to 750 per year by the end of 2020.
Methods: The ETE dashboard was adapted from an existing human-centered geovisualization …

Pigs, Pastures, Pepper Pickers, Pitchforks: Carl Sandburg’S Rootabaga Stories And The Tall Tale, Michael Heyman

Past studies of American nonsense literature have tended to lump it together with the British, for many good reasons. This article, however, distinguishes American nonsense from the British by way of its folk origins and cultural context. One of the least-recognized writers of nonsense is Carl Sandburg, who is famous for his iconic American poetry, but his Rootabaga Stories (1922–30) are some of the best and most distinctive representatives of the genre. Sandburg’s nonsense short stories are lyrical and strange, but their value lies also in their distinctive American origins. They are distinguished in having particularly American themes, cultural tendencies, …
A Comparison Of The Push And Pull Production Systems At Their Opti Mal Designs Under The Economic Consideration, Chiadamrong N., Kohly P.
A Comparison Of The Push And Pull Production Systems At Their Opti Mal Designs Under The Economic Consideration, Chiadamrong N., Kohly P.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The term “push” and “pull” have been used to explain a wide variety of production inventory systems. The distinction refers to a specific attribute, which can be identified by observing the mechanisms for controlling material flow on the shop floor and a specific policy for the management of inventories and production schedules. This paper gives an attempt to compare these systems under their optimal settings under a constraint resource. Two optimal-seeking methods (Taguchi method and Response Surface Methodology) are used to suggest the optimized design of the system under an economic term, which is the profit generated from the system. …

Health Needs Of The Polish Society And The Willingness To Pay For Health Services, Maciej Jewczak, Klaudia Twardowska
Health Needs Of The Polish Society And The Willingness To Pay For Health Services, Maciej Jewczak, Klaudia Twardowska
European Management Studies
Health needs of every person are growing constantly. Attempts to improve social well-being in relation to health needs use the results of cross-sectional studies combined with local data at the individual level. Popularisation of GIS tools has enabled monitoring of various system dysfunctions and thus contributes to the identification of actual health needs, thereby improving the quality of healthcare via, for example, adjusting health policies and changing the goals of public health. GIS can be used for mapping health needs that have been specified by the Ministry of Health. However, as evidenced by research and observed in numerous opinions, it …

Letters On North America, Michel Chevalier, Steven Rowan, Carlos A. Schwantes
History Faculty Works
The basis of this completely fresh translation is the third edition of Michel Chevalier, Lettres sur l’Amérique du Nord, used in the version published in Brussels in 1838 by Hauman et Cie., Société belge de librairie, in three volumes, and compared by me with the 1836 Paris edition. To increase the practical use of the text, the “Notes” originally placed at the end of each volume have been moved to follow the “Letter” to which they refer. For the same reason the footnotes of the author have been preserved at the bottom of the page (and have been made continuous …

A Primer In Science And Engineering Collection Development, Julia Gelfand, Ibironke Lawal, Jill Hanson Powell, Anne E. Rauh
Librarian Publications
Collection development librarians often find themselves in charge of selection and deselection for some unfamiliar subjects. While there is extensive literature and courses on general collection development, there are limited courses on science and engineering in particular. This session will focus on science and engineering collection development strategies. It is designed to build self-confidence for people new to the profession, those who are transitioning to collection development in science and engineering, and those with no science subject background. Four librarians from diverse institutions, responsible for science and engineering collection development, will discuss topics important to their roles and strategies learned …

Efficacy Of A Soft Release Strategy For Translocating Scaled Quail In The Rolling Plains Of Texas, Rebekah E. Ruzicka, Kara B. Campbell, Michelle C. Downey, Dale Rollins, Bradley Kubečka, Matthew Poole, Donald C. Ruthven
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) populations have become locally extinct and spatially fragmented in the Rolling Plains ecoregion of Texas. Translocating Scaled Quail from core to declining populations could augment populations or re-establishing extinct populations. Although translocations of scaled quail have been attempted in Texas, none have been documented and none have attempted to identify best practices. Release strategy (i.e., hard or soft release) is a factor that can influence the success of a translocation. Our objective was to compare daily apparent survival of scaled quail translocated to the Rolling Plains between 2 release treatment groups: hard- and soft-release. …

A Method For Setting Northern Bobwhite Population And Habitat Objectives For Large Landscape Partnerships, James Giocomo, William Vermillion, Stephen Demaso, Barry Wilson, Jon Hayes, Kenneth Gee, Jesús Franco, Aimee Roberson, Robert Perez, Jeff Raasch, Bill Bartush, Benjamin Kahler
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Population and habitat objectives are the foundation for many conservation actions. Often objectives set at one scale are difficult to translate to larger or smaller scales. Three bird habitat Joint Ventures, Gulf Coast, Oaks & Prairies, and Rio Grande, working cooperatively with the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative, have a common objective to stabilize northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in four Bird Conservation Regions. We cooperatively developed a method using the North American Breeding Bird Survey trend for several scenarios with different time horizons (10-, 20-, 30-year, or longer), the spring home range size, and the per …

Uncertainty And The Entanglement Of Habitat Loss And Fragmentation Effects In The Management Of Northern Bobwhite, Mason H. Cline, Richard B. Chandler, Clinton T. Moore, James A. Martin
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
There is a need to understand the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and other grassland bird species and relate this to conservation action and delivery, especially in areas of intensive anthropogenic development. Through our research, we investigated the factors contributing to habitat loss and fragmentation in order to prioritize management within the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCP LCC) region of Texas, USA. For this geographic region, we completed these objectives: analyzed grassland bird habitat loss and fragmentation resulting from oil and gas development, which has become especially rapid in this …
The Role Of Joint Ventures In Northern Bobwhite Conservation, Stephen Demaso
The Role Of Joint Ventures In Northern Bobwhite Conservation, Stephen Demaso
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Partnerships are crucial part of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) conservation. A key principle is that no single entity can effectively address the complex landscape-level conservation issues to sustain populations and their supporting habitats in perpetuity. Joint Ventures (JVs) use a partnership based approach to deliver specific bird population and habitat objectives within their geography. Currently, 7 of the 12 JVs that occur in the North American bobwhite range have bobwhites listed as a priority species. This presentation will cover various topics including: 1) the history of JVs in North America; 2) an overview of the variety of models …

Strategic Habitat Conservation For Declining Grassland Wildlife Populations In The Oaks And Prairies Joint Venture, James Giocomo, Johnathan Hayes, Kenneth Gee, Jeff Raasch, Robert Perez
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Degradation and conversion of functioning grassland ecosystems in North America has driven significant declines in grassland wildlife populations across multiple taxa. In an effort to address declines in the grasslands of Oklahoma and Texas, a number of governmental agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations have partnered to form the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture (OPJV) to more strategically and collaboratively deliver conservation actions in this region. With northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) as the flagship species, OPJV has worked to implement a fully integrated Strategic Habitat Conservation framework that works at multiple scales to conduct biological planning, landscape conservation design, habitat …
Molecular Ecology Of New World Quails: Messages For Managers, Damon Williford, Randy W. Deyoung, Leonard A. Brennan
Molecular Ecology Of New World Quails: Messages For Managers, Damon Williford, Randy W. Deyoung, Leonard A. Brennan
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Recent genetic studies of New World quails (Odontophoridae) have yielded important, and sometimes, counter-intuitive insights regarding their evolutionary relationships, genetic diversity, population structure, and biogeographic history. Many of these new insights have important implications for managers. New World quails are a distinct family within galliforms, most closely related to guineafowl (Numididae) and pheasants (Phasianidae) rather than guans and chachalacas (Cracidae). The African stone partridges (Ptilopachus spp.) are the closest living relatives of the New World quails. The combination of phylogeographic studies with ecological niche modeling has revealed the biogeographic history of several species of New World quails, including Pleistocene …

National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) abundance has declined precipitously for decades across much of the species range, to the point of widespread local, regional, and statewide extirpation. Because of successful translocations of other gallinaceous birds, bobwhite enthusiasts increasingly call for use of the approach. Consequently, the National Bobwhite Technical Committee (NBTC), on behalf of state agencies, requested a review and recommendation by the NBTC Science Subcommittee. Thus, our paper is co-authored by invited experts and includes reviews of peer-reviewed publications, manuscripts in these proceedings, state agency reports, experience by co-authors, and a survey of perspectives on translocations by state …
First Trump, Now Clinton -- Investigative Hand-Grenades Keep Flying, Allen C. Guelzo
First Trump, Now Clinton -- Investigative Hand-Grenades Keep Flying, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
As long as there has been politics, there has been corruption. So the investigative hand-grenades which have been flying for the past year, first at the Trump campaign, now at Mrs. Clinton’s, are not exactly new in American political life. What is new, however, is the geography.
Corruption used to be something American politicians did with other Americans. Now, it’s become something that involves other countries, and one in particular – Russia – which can’t be accused of friendly intentions toward the United States.
Curiously, at the beginning of the nation, Americans were confident that political corruption would never happen …

From 'Decolonized' To Reconciliation Research In Canada: Drawing From Indigenous Research Paradigms, Deborah Mcgregor
Articles & Book Chapters
When the Honorable Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was asked the one message that non-Aboriginal Canadians can learn from the work of the TRC, he said “put the relationship back into balance”. Sinclair stressed that in order to achieve reconciliation and facilitate balance in the relationship we need to change the way non-Aboriginal people are educated about Aboriginal peoples. Justice Sinclair also stated that racism and colonialism are firmly embedded structurally, systemically and institutionally in Canada. This has to change. This paper will explore how the findings from the TRC can transform the theory …

Cultural Imprint: A History Of Northwest Coast Native And First Nations Prints, India Rael Young
Art & Art History ETDs
Cultural imPRINT provides the first substantive art historical investigation into Northwest Coast Indigenous prints. Since the 1960s, Northwest Coast artists have employed the print medium to share their histories, heritage, and culture amongst each other and with the larger world. Because print artists number in the hundreds, and print editions in the thousands, this dissertation takes a socio-cultural approach to understanding the purposes for the medium’s production and circulation. First, it analyzes the deep histories of reproduction in the North American art world and in Northwest Coast Indigenous communities, asserting that reproduction within coastal communities serves to perpetuate history from …
