Democratic Dissent And The Politics Of Rescue During The Twenty-First Century’S “Inhospitable” Eu Migration “Crisis”, Marouf Hasian Jr., José Ángel Maldonado Olivas, Stephanie Marek Muller Jan 2017

Democratic Dissent And The Politics Of Rescue During The Twenty-First Century’S “Inhospitable” Eu Migration “Crisis”, Marouf Hasian Jr., José Ángel Maldonado Olivas, Stephanie Marek Muller

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article uses critical approaches to examine the ways in which dissenters have objected to the European Union’s current “politics of rescue.” The authors argue that the term “hospitality” has been a key term in liberal theorizing about mobility since the Enlightenment, but that various neo-liberal “pull” theories, worries about securitization and the militarization of rescue efforts in the Mediterranean have converged in ways that have turned Europe into an “inhospitable” place for foreigners. The authors use three short case studies—of maritime captains’ and sailors’ rescue efforts, academic critiques of FRONTEX, and vernacular reactions to the iconic Kurdi image—to put …

Activating Informality: Negotiating Urban Identities In Bolivia And Brazil, Georgia E. Gempler Jan 2017

Activating Informality: Negotiating Urban Identities In Bolivia And Brazil, Georgia E. Gempler

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

Drawing on original research, this paper explores the relationship between community identity and informality in Bolivia and Brazil, answering the question “How does informality influence and operate as identity in the social imaginary of urban Bolivia and Brazil?” Based on case studies of informal settlements in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and Niterói, Brazil, I argue that informality is a tool of social control, community resistance, and identity consolidation. Community identity is informed by the territorial stigmatization of place through national conceptualizations of race and violence, and histories of marginality, resulting in resistance identity and insurgent citizenships.

Urban Children's Experience Of A Natural Place Outside Of Denver, Corey J. Martz Jan 2017

Urban Children's Experience Of A Natural Place Outside Of Denver, Corey J. Martz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, a common and ingrained perception is that humans are separate from nature. Over the last several decades, urbanization, the increasing presence of technology, and progressively busier schedules contribute to a growing concern over a disconnect between children and nature. In light of this potential disconnect, I explored how urban children experience a natural place outside of the city. In this study, I investigated the "sense of place" of 27 children living in Denver, Colorado; sixteen of these children had experienced a natural place at a summer camp outside of the city. The children created photo-story maps …

The Dividing Lines Of Opportunity: The Relationships Among Student Characteristics And Selected Institutional Services At Two-Year Public And For-Profit Colleges, Elizabeth Anne Gilblom

ETD Archive

This study examined if and to what extent selected institutional services and special learning and credit opportunities in the 2-year private, for-profit college sector and community colleges in the United States are related to race, socioeconomic status and urbanicity. The researcher evaluated whether the institutional services and special learning and credit opportunities available to students at these 1,479 institutions are stratified by the socioeconomic and racial characteristics of their student bodies and their local communities, by institutional control, by the institution’s degree of urbanization, and the student financial aid characteristics. The researcher also investigated the relationship among institutional services, special …

The Yin And Yang Of Conflict Management And Resolution, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2017

The Yin And Yang Of Conflict Management And Resolution, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The increasing interaction among cultural groups due to the impact of globalization has not only made the relationship between conflict and culture more interdependent and complicated, but also demands that a new way be found for studying conflict management and resolution from a more dynamic perspective. Eastern and Western cultures are distinct societies in terms of axiological, epistemological and methodological assumptions. The axiological assumptions are especially useful for understanding the differences between Eastern and Western conflict behaviors. From the perspective of human interaction, the dynamic nature of culture can be more specifically displayed intraculturally by internal variations and interculturally by …

Context-Dependence Of Physiological Systems: Environment-Physiology Interactions In The Respiratory Control System, Joseph M. Santin Jan 2017

Context-Dependence Of Physiological Systems: Environment-Physiology Interactions In The Respiratory Control System, Joseph M. Santin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

We know that animals are tuned to survive different environmental conditions or else life would not exist. Unfortunately, this is often forgotten or ignored when designing experiments. As Marsh Tenney articulated, "The physiologist keeps the whole always in mind. He accepts the tactical necessity of reductionism to understand parts, but, once done, for him it is only the beginning, never the end” (from Remmers, 2005). In an era when it is all too common to take environmental complexity out of the organism to understand physiology, my work puts some of that complexity back in the study of organisms. I take …

Mapping Work In Early Twentieth-Century Montreal: A Rabbi, A Neighbourhood, And A Community, Mary Anne Poutanen, Jason Gilliland Jan 2017

Mapping Work In Early Twentieth-Century Montreal: A Rabbi, A Neighbourhood, And A Community, Mary Anne Poutanen, Jason Gilliland

Paediatrics Publications

Rabbi Simon Glazer’s 1909 daily journal provides a window onto his role as an orthodox rabbi of a largely Yiddish-speaking immigrant community, his interactions with Jewish newcomers, the range of tasks he performed to augment the inadequate stipends he received from a consortium of five city synagogues where he was chief rabbi, and the ways in which Jewish newcomers sought to become economically independent. Using a multidisciplinary methodology, including Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS), Glazer’s journal offers a new lens through which to view and map the social geography of this community. Our study contributes to a growing body of …

Residential Schools And The Effects On Indigenous Health And Well-Being In Canada - A Scoping Review, Piotr Wilk, Alana Maltby, Martin Cooke Jan 2017

Residential Schools And The Effects On Indigenous Health And Well-Being In Canada - A Scoping Review, Piotr Wilk, Alana Maltby, Martin Cooke

Paediatrics Publications

Background: The history of residential schools has been identified as having long lasting and intergenerational effects on the physical and mental well-being of Indigenous populations in Canada. Our objective was to identify the extent and range of research on residential school attendance on specific health outcomes and the populations affected. Methods: A scoping review of the empirical peer-reviewed literature was conducted, following the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley (2005). or this review, nine databases were used: Bibliography of Native North Americans, Canadian Health Research Collection, CINAHL, Google Scholar, Indigenous Studies Portal, PubMed, Scopus, Statistics Canada, and Web of Science. …

The Association Of Household Food Security, Household Characteristics And School Environment With Obesity Status Among Off-Reserve First Nations And Métis Children And Youth In Canada: Results From The 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, Jasmin Bhawra, Martin J. Cooke, Yanling Guo, Piotr Wilk

Paediatrics Publications

Introduction: Indigenous children are twice as likely to be classified as obese and three times as likely to experience household food insecurity when compared with non-Indigenous Canadian children. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between food insecurity and weight status among Métis and off-reserve First Nations children and youth across Canada. Methods: We obtained data on children and youth aged 6 to 17 years (n = 6900) from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. We tested bivariate relationships using Pearson chi-square tests and used nested binary logistic regressions to examine the food insecurity−weight status relationship, after controlling …

Mapping Metroid: Narrative, Space, And Other M, Luke Arnott Jan 2017

Mapping Metroid: Narrative, Space, And Other M, Luke Arnott

FIMS Publications

Metroid: Other M, the latest game in the Metroid series, was heavily criticized for the contradictory portrayal of its avatar protagonist, Samus Aran. This article analyzes these critiques within the 25-year history of the Metroid series, noting intersections with literary theory, cognitive science, geography, and cinema. “Mapping Metroid” argues that player dissatisfaction is a result of Other M’s inconsistency in balancing gameplay constraints with player agency, and the game’s failure at “imperative” storytelling. The maps in Other M and its predecessors are treated in depth, since the relationship between cartographic and gameworld spaces must be “read” dynamically by players to …

Accuracy Evaluation Of The Canadian Openstreetmap Road Networks, Hongyu Zhang, Jacek Malczewski Jan 2017

Accuracy Evaluation Of The Canadian Openstreetmap Road Networks, Hongyu Zhang, Jacek Malczewski

Geography & Environment Publications

Volunteered geographic information (VGI) has been applied in many fields such as participatory planning, humanitarian relief and crisis management. One of the reasons for popularity of VGI is its cost-effectiveness. However, the coverage and accuracy of VGI cannot be guaranteed. The issue of geospatial data quality in the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project has become a trending research topic because of the large size of the dataset and the multiple channels of data access. This paper provides details on a national study of the Canadian OSM street network data for the assessment ofcompleteness, positional accuracy, attribute accuracy, semantic accuracy and lineage. The …

Morpho-Sedimentary Characteristics Of Proximal Gravel Braided River Deposits In A Froude-Scaled Physical Model, Peter Ashmore, Tobias Gardner, Pauline Leduc Jan 2017

Morpho-Sedimentary Characteristics Of Proximal Gravel Braided River Deposits In A Froude-Scaled Physical Model, Peter Ashmore, Tobias Gardner, Pauline Leduc

Geography & Environment Publications

A Froude‐scaled physical model of a proximal gravel‐bed braided river was used to connect the river morphological characteristics, and sedimentary processes and forms, to deposit geometry. High resolution continuous three‐dimensional topographic data were acquired from sequential photogrammetric digital elevation models paired with grain‐size surface maps derived from image analysis of textural properties of the surface. From these data, the full three‐dimensional development of the braided river deposit and grain‐size sorting patterns was compiled over an experimental time period of 41 h during which the model river reworked a large portion of the braided channel. The minimum surface of the deposit …

Urbanizing Physical Geography, Peter Ashmore, Belinda Dodson Jan 2017

Urbanizing Physical Geography, Peter Ashmore, Belinda Dodson

Geography & Environment Publications

The physical environment of cities and processes of urbanization have a long‐standing presence in the field of physical geography and can give physical geography a renewed relevance in urban sustainability and planning. Existing approaches in physical geography will be a valuable component of this work. New insights and understanding of urban environments may be gained by engaging with ideas of urban landscapes as socio‐natures; adopting critical, political, and reflexive modes of thought and practice; and thinking beyond the physical structures and spatial boundaries of the city to planetary urbanization. Thinking about urban environments in these ways also opens up possible …

Is It Sound Poilcy Or Fast Policy? Practitioner’S Perspectives On The Role Of Place Branding Local Economic Development., Evan P. Cleave, Godwin Arku, Richard C. Sadler, Jason A. Gilliland

Human Environments Analysis Lab (HEAL)

In response to neoliberal policies and globalization pressures over the past three decades, urban governments in advanced economies have, with near-unanimity, adopted place branding as an approach to foster local economic growth. Framed as an outcome of multilevel neoliberal policymaking and local entrepreneurial governance, place branding has been adopted by urban places at all scales and geographic contexts with little regard for its efficacy. It is unclear, however, whether place branding represents a substantive approach, or is merely an emerging example of a neoliberal scripting. In many regards, the debate surrounding place branding is similar to the discourse on the …

Walking Code, Conor Mcgarrigle Jan 2017

Walking Code, Conor Mcgarrigle

Articles

This paper describes an early stage research project that seeks to apply Situationist concepts of psychogeography to urban walking as artistic and activist practice. The project seeks to ultimately create a syntax that can be used to describe and codify the subjective spatial practice of walking in the city. This process is a conceptual and discursive exercise to generate new knowledge about urban space as embodied data space that seeks to create a practical open framework that can be deployed to algorithmically generate walking experiences tailored toward specific desires and activities.

This will be achieved through the development of algorithmic …

Harmonizing Cultural Ip Across Borders: Fashionable Bags & Ghanaian Adinkra Symbols, J. Janewa Osei-Tutu

Articles

Global copyright and trademark laws protect symbols, names, and literary and artistic works. However, when their primary significance is cultural, because they are neither individual original works nor symbols that are used as commercial identifiers, intellectual property laws do not protect these symbols or artistic works. This is true, even if these goods are protected under national laws as part of that nation's cultural heritage. Once these cultural goods cross borders, there is no international law that will enable the country from which these goods originate to assert its rights in other countries. This Article characterizes these cultural goods as …
