The Bull's Hide Stretched Thin: Catalan (Literary) Nationalism From The Renaixenca To The Death Of Franco, Seaver Holter Jan 2017

The Bull's Hide Stretched Thin: Catalan (Literary) Nationalism From The Renaixenca To The Death Of Franco, Seaver Holter

Political Science Honors Projects

Spain’s “Catalan question” threatens the unity of the central state. To better understand the nature of contemporary nationalist sentiment in Catalonia, I undertake a study of the movement’s cultural roots. It is my view that the development of Catalan nationalism is attributable to the prevalence of nineteenth-century Romantic conceptions of national identity as being inextricably linked to language, the essential vehicle of Volksgeist. This development of a Catalan literary canon was linked to the survival of the Catalan national spirit in the face of Castilian repression, despite the little political unity within Catalonia itself. Paradoxically, it is also through …

Centring Fish Agency In Coastal Dam Removal And River Restoration, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Emma Lundberg, Ludovic Drapier, Kristen C. Hychka Jan 2017

Centring Fish Agency In Coastal Dam Removal And River Restoration, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Emma Lundberg, Ludovic Drapier, Kristen C. Hychka

New Hampshire EPSCoR

This article considers the agentic capacity of fish in dam removal decisions. Pairing new materialist explorations of agency with news media, policy documents, and interviews related to a suite of dam decisions in a New England, USA watershed, we identify the ways that river herring seem constrained through technocratic discourse to particular human-defined roles in dam removal discussions. We suggest, meanwhile, that existing human relationships with salmonids like brook trout might serve as a bridge for public stakeholders and restoration managers to recognise the agentic creativity of fish in dam removal and river restoration decisions.

Beauty In Online Learning Environments: A Quantitative Study Of The Impact Of Expressive Aesthetics On Student Engagement In Blended Courses, Shane Alexander Kelley Jan 2017

Beauty In Online Learning Environments: A Quantitative Study Of The Impact Of Expressive Aesthetics On Student Engagement In Blended Courses, Shane Alexander Kelley

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the growing proportion of blended and online courses in higher education, it is increasingly important to understand how the online learning environments of these courses can impact student engagement. One important element of these online learning environments that is not yet understood is the role of expressive aesthetics. In this study, thirty graduate students participated in two different online environments of approximately equal usability – except for expressive aesthetics – to determine how this difference might affect student engagement in a blended learning course. Using a quantitative experimental repeated measures design, students encountered both a high expressive aesthetics and …

Cultural Disparities: An Ethnography Of First Generation Students Of Rural, Generational Poverty, Theresa Anne Spanella

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative, ethnographic study was to identify the cultural norms, beliefs, languages, values assumptions and rituals of first generation college students from rural, low socioeconomic status in order to better understand how social and cultural capital create obstacles that affect persistence in rural, low socioeconomic status students. The study was conducted at one, liberal arts college in rural Pennsylvania. All participants were the first in their family to attend college, had grown up in two or more generations of poverty, and lived in rural areas. Data were collected in two phases encompassing two academic semesters. Participant observation, …

Socio-Environmental Drought Response In A Mixed Urban-Agricultural Setting: Synthesizing Biophysical And Governance Responses In The Platte River Watershed, Nebraska, Usa, Samuel C. Zipper, Kelly Helm Smith, Betsy Breyer, Jianxiao Qui, Anthony Kung, Dustin Herrmann

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Ensuring global food and water security requires a detailed understanding of how coupled socio-environmental systems respond to drought. Using the Platte River Watershed in Nebraska (USA) as an exemplar mixed urban-agricultural watershed, we quantify biophysical response to drought in urban (Lincoln NE) and agricultural systems alongside a qualitative analysis of governance response and adaptive capacity of both sectors. Synthesis of results highlights parallels and discontinuities between urban and agricultural preparations for and response to drought. Whereas drought prompted an increase in well installations and expansion of water-intensive crops, e.g., corn, in the agricultural sector, outdoor water use restrictions rapidly curtailed …

Screening Families For Unmet Social Needs In A Pediatric Clinic, Elizabeth Evans Peterson Jan 2017

Screening Families For Unmet Social Needs In A Pediatric Clinic, Elizabeth Evans Peterson

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Previous research indicates that at least 60% of preventable deaths are caused by modifiable factors. Children, especially those under the age of five, are the most at-risk population for negative social determinants of health. Identifying and mitigating these factors could break the poverty impact cycle and promote wellness into adulthood, improving community health outcomes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe trends in unmet social needs of children attending a well-child visit in Dayton, Ohio. Methods: Families attending a hospital-affiliated clinic during a well-child visit were asked to complete a simple, 10-item questionnaire. This cross-sectional study utilized …

International development has been an overwhelmingly white, heteronormative, and patriarchal project. That is to say, it has been informed ideologically, epistemologically, and in practice by hegemonic Eurocentric norms, priorities, and “expert knowledge.” In this course, we focus our attention on the shifting but near-permanent criticisms of normative, hegemonic development projects articulated by LGBTQ people, people of color, Indigenous scholars and activists, Pan-Africanists and African feminists, transnational feminists, Chicano/a historians, and more. We give particular attention to elucidating alternative imaginaries of “progress,” “empowerment,” and “development” for meaningful, livable futures that emphasize wellbeing, ecological balance, and buen vivir. In this way, the …

Resilience Theory In Climate-Based Agriculture Development Projects: Useful Framework Or Popular Buzzword?, Rebecca Ann Chillrud Jan 2017

Resilience Theory In Climate-Based Agriculture Development Projects: Useful Framework Or Popular Buzzword?, Rebecca Ann Chillrud

Bard Center for Environmental Policy

International development organizations are increasingly attempting to improve the resilience of the communities they serve through their projects in these communities. However, these projects often fail to address key concepts from the resilience theory literature, calling into question their ability to effectively promote resilience. This thesis attempts to locate these gaps in understanding by analyzing proposal documents from projects intending to promote agricultural resilience to climate change. A content analysis approach was used to analyze 55 projects from three international development groups—the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Program—proposed or completed between 2006 and 2016. …

Ambassador Dr. Cynthia Shepard Perry: A Sycamore Destined For Greatness, Crystal Mikell Reynolds

Student Diversity Histories

Ambassador Cynthia Shepard Perry is perhaps best known for her role as Ambassador to the African nations of Sierra Leone, and Burundi, and as Executive Director of the African Development Bank in Tunisia. This dynamic woman, born in Lost Creek, a suburb of Terre Haute, Indiana, was destined for greatness, according to her prophetic father, a veteran of WWI. He saw her birth date on November 11, Veteran’s Day, and her keen intellect as a sign that she was exceptional. Her father’s premonition about her would in fact come to fruition: in her thirty-year career as a United Nations and …

Embedding A Blended Learning Approach From First Year, Suzanne Doyle, Michael Moore, Lesley Murphy, Gavin Sewell Jan 2017

Embedding A Blended Learning Approach From First Year, Suzanne Doyle, Michael Moore, Lesley Murphy, Gavin Sewell

Practitioner Research Projects

As DIT strives to enhance the transition of students into third level education, a number of priority areas were identified as part of the ongoing STEER (Student Transition, Expectations, Engagement, Retention) initiative. Ultimately the onus is on DIT to enable students to become self-directed learners. Blended learning is positioned as a solution to aid in this transition. It has been described as "the combination of traditional face-to-face teaching methods with authentic online learning activities" (Davies & Fill, 2007, p. 817). However, it is not without risk to assume that first year students have a natural affinity with blended approaches, as …

Official Rebrand And The Importance Of Queer Adornment, Mi Leggett Jan 2017

Official Rebrand And The Importance Of Queer Adornment, Mi Leggett

Honors Papers

In altering and regenerating, I strip clothes from gendered confines. This reuse explores the value of originality and reinterpretation. This action is also one of empowerment in its disregard for the typical sanctity of consumer products. Furthermore, renewing old clothing references the psychological, political, and environmental consequences of excessive accumulation and consumption.

The parallel practices of art and fashion in my work inform each other in both their material and the contemplation of fashion's function. My fascination with the meaning behind personal style derives from how what we wear signifies, particularly within the queer communities of which I am a …

The Every Student Succeeds Act: A Summary Of Federal Policy & Implications For Maine, Janet C. Fairman Ph.D., Amy F. Johnson Phd, Francis Eberle Phd

State of Education

Part I summarizes key topics of federal education policy articulating accountability requirements for state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs, or school districts). In that section we describe major goals of the legislation and which components are the same or changed in the federal law. The findings are grouped into nine topic areas, so that readers may more easily find information on areas of particular interest. We also provide short excerpts from key sections of the law for reference at the end of each topic section. Part II describes specific goals and changes in both the structure of …
