Environmental Mental Models Of College Students, Melissa R. Wuellner, Leslie Vincent, Brandi Felts
Environmental Mental Models Of College Students, Melissa R. Wuellner, Leslie Vincent, Brandi Felts
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Primary and secondary students in the United States are provided environmental education in their curricula due in part to national legislation, but higher education, for many U.S. citizens, is the last opportunity to educate young adults about the environment and humans’ role in it in a formalized setting. Pre-college education and other life experiences or ways of learning can shape a student’s mental model of the environment. While some previous research has focused on understanding environmental mental models of primary and secondary students, only one study to date has evaluated models of college students. Further, no study has evaluated potential …

Praying About Forgiveness In Japanese, English, And Beyond Words: Bilingualism As An Underexplored Resource For Christian Spiritual Formation, Andrea Lundquist Johnson
Praying About Forgiveness In Japanese, English, And Beyond Words: Bilingualism As An Underexplored Resource For Christian Spiritual Formation, Andrea Lundquist Johnson
Doctor of Ministry
Prayer understood as a form of communication and communion with the Deity is a nearly universal human activity and a core Christian practice. Christian prayer may take many shapes including colloquial, petitionary, ritual, and meditative, and may be practiced alone or with others. Prayer regarding forgiveness is both the example and command of Jesus, yet forgiveness is multidimensional, complex, and culturally conditioned in addition to being difficult because it involves change in self identity.
The question of whether the language of prayer matters for bilinguals, specifically Japanese/English speaking bilinguals, has not been researched. Neither has the area of bilingual prayer …

While ecosystem services and climate change are often examined independently, quantitative assessments integrating these fields are needed to inform future land management decisions. Using climate-informed state-and-transition simulations, we examined projected trends and trade-offs for a suite of ecosystem services under four climate change scenarios and two management scenarios (active management emphasizing fuel treatments and no management other than fire suppression) in a fire-prone landscape of dry and moist mixed-conifer forests in central Oregon, USA. Focal ecosystem services included fire potential (regulating service), timber volume (provisioning service), and potential wildlife habitat (supporting service). Projections without climate change suggested active management in …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ecosystem-services scholarship has largely focused on monetary valuation and the material contributions of ecosystems to human well-being. Increasingly, research is calling for a deeper understanding of how less tangible, nonmaterial values shape management and stakeholder decisions. We propose a framework that characterizes a suite of sociocultural phenomena rooted in key social science disciplines that are currently underrepresented in the ecosystem-services literature. The results from three example studies are presented to demonstrate how the tenets of this conceptual model can be applied in practice. We consider the findings from these studies in light of three priorities for future research: (1) complexities …

Improving Trip Generation Methods For Livable Communities, Kelly J. Clifton, Nico Larco, Kristina Marie Currans, Jael Wettach-Glosser
TREC Final Reports
Recent efforts to improve trip generation data available for transportation impact analysis of new development include the collection of multimodal trip generation data, development of models that account for the built environment, and new recommendations for practice. Building on a long line of research on transportation and built environment, many studies have identified important features of the surrounding built environment that most impact trip rates and mode shares, building on a long line of research on transportation and the built environment. Despite these improvements in data and methods, less attention is placed on identifying the conditions of the site itself …
Explosive Weapon Effects, Gichd
Explosive Weapon Effects, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
Motivated by its strategic goal to improve human security and equipped with subject expertise in explosive hazards, the GICHD launched a research project to characterise explosive weapons. The GICHD perceives the debate on explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA) as an important humanitarian issue. The aim of this research into explosive weapons characteristics and their immediate, destructive effects on humans and structures, is to help inform the ongoing discussions on EWIPA, intended to reduce harm to civilians. The intention of the research is not to discuss the moral, political or legal implications of using explosive weapon systems in populated areas, …

Cozy Mart: Convenient Aesthetics, Eric John Edvalson
Cozy Mart: Convenient Aesthetics, Eric John Edvalson
Theses and Dissertations
Convenience stores in their various forms are not only commercial outlets of foodstuffs and sundry items but are also experiential in nature; the act of going to a convenience store is a culturally shared experience. In homage to these spaces, Cozy Mart is a public art installation and performance which recreates this shared experience in an idealized form. Based on do-it-yourself culture, appropriation of public space, and artistic traditions of sculpture and printmaking, Cozy Mart invites interaction with art outside of the traditional gallery space and capitalizes on alternative methods of art distribution.
Open Source Architecture: Redefining Residential Architecture In Islamabad, Mariam Yaqub
Open Source Architecture: Redefining Residential Architecture In Islamabad, Mariam Yaqub
Architecture Theses and Projects
Islamabad, a planned city, has grown rapidly since its conception in the 1960’s but it has not followed its predetermined fate but rather grown haphazardly due to the lack of infrastructure available to implement Doxiadis’s master plan. The city was unable to meet the housing requirements of the people causing them to build gated communities on the outskirts of Islamabad and its sister city, Rawalpindi. The market demands caused city prices to rise exponentially, increasing the economic divide between the social classes. The city which was once supposed to reflect diversity of social classes became home to the elite and …

Theses and Dissertations
Due to perpetual and innovative technological advancements, the need for reliable and stable power generation and transmission has been increasing dramatically over the years. Smart grids use advanced technologies to provide self-monitoring, self-checking and self-healing power networks, including smart metering devices capable of providing accurate measurements of the network’s power components. Among the most important metering devices in this context are “Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs)â€. PMUs are metering devices that provide synchronized measurements of voltage, current and phase angle differences using signals from the GPS satellites. However, due to the high cost of such advanced metering devices, studies were performed …

INTRODUCTION: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) should have well-defined primary and secondary outcomes to answer questions generated by the main hypotheses. However, for the chronic, inflammatory skin disease hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), the reported outcome measures are numerous and diverse. A recent systematic review found a total of 30 outcome measure instruments in 12 RCTs. This use of a broad range of outcome measures can increase difficulties in interpretation and comparison of results and may potentially obstruct appropriate evidence synthesis by causing reporting bias. One strategy for dealing with these problems is to develop a core outcome set (COS). A COS is …

Medicaid, Family Spending, And The Financial Implications Of Crowd-Out, Marcus Dillender
Medicaid, Family Spending, And The Financial Implications Of Crowd-Out, Marcus Dillender
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
A primary purpose of health insurance is to protect families from medical expenditure risk. Despite this goal and despite the fact that research has found that Medicaid can crowd out private coverage, little is known about the effect of Medicaid on families' spending patterns. This paper implements a simulated instrumental variables strategy with data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey to estimate the effect of an additional family member becoming eligible from Medicaid on family-level health insurance coverage and spending. The results indicate that an additional family member becoming eligible for Medicaid increases the number of people in the family with …
A Dominant Logic View Of Managing It Innovation, Gary Pan
A Dominant Logic View Of Managing It Innovation, Gary Pan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
With rapid technological advances and increased competition, managing innovation has become increasingly challenging. There are two possible causes for the innovation project failure. First, owing to incomplete market information, poor product management decision is made that may result in delayed market entry. Second, challenging project management activities such as inefficient communication among project teammates and mishandling complex stakeholder relationships. To gain insight into successful IT innovation project management, a theoretical lens that is able to facilitate the understanding of issues arising from these two causes is necessary. Dominant logic, which can be viewed as both an information filter and routine, …
Pengaruh Institusi Regional Terhadap Konvergensi Kebijakan Antarnegara: Studi Kasus Asean Open Skies, Dea Malinda Azalia
Pengaruh Institusi Regional Terhadap Konvergensi Kebijakan Antarnegara: Studi Kasus Asean Open Skies, Dea Malinda Azalia
Jurnal Politik
This article analyzes the effect of regional economic integration on cross-national policy through the ASEAN Open Skies treaty, particularly in Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore. This qualitative research applies the concepts of intergovernmentalist-supranationalist regional institution and causal-mechanism that lead to cross-national policy convergence. I argue that ASEAN regionalism as an intergovernmentalist institution affects the process of policymaking, the implementation of ASEAN Open Skies in the regional level, and the adoption of it in the domestic level. The process of international harmonization and transnational communication (transnational problem solving) during the arrangement of the air transport cooperation frameworks in ASEAN has made the …

To respond the Asian financial crisis in 1997-1999, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia took different measures to their macroeconomic policies. The government of Indonesia tightened their fiscal and monetary policies, discontinued their intervention in foreign exchange market, and liberalized various sectors of economics while the government of Malaysia adopted expansive monetary and fiscal policies, continued their intervention in foreign exchange market, and controlled capital flows. Why was the same crisis responded by different macroeconomic policies? Why did the crisis lead to liberalized macroeconomic policies change in Indonesia, but the same thing did not happen in Malaysia? Previous studies have …

This research aims to describe multi-layered oppressions experienced by Chinese-Indonesian women as some of them became the victims of mass rape in 1998 Tragedy in Jakarta. There are only few studies discussing violence against Chinese-Indonesian in 1998 Tragedy and amongst them, only few come up with the focus on violence against Chinese-Indonesian women issues (e.g. Purdey 2013; Siegel 1998; Tadié 2009). Several researchers such as Heryanto (2000) and Wichelen (2000) have tried to investigate the tragedy; however their studies only cover sole aspect of the issue which is state violence and gender. Using qualitative methods of document examinations and literature …

Kekalahan Cambodia People’S Party Di Wilayah Urban Kamboja Pada Pemilu Tahun 2013, Farizan Fajari
Jurnal Politik
Cambodia is one of the countries that implements electoral authoritarianism system. This condition is misused by the ruling party, the Cambodia People’s Party or CPP, as the means to dominate the parliament until the 2008 election. However, the political party power distribution in Cambodia has undergone drastical change in the 2013 election. In this election, the CPP seats decreased significantly, which was the worst result for CPP since the 1998 election. The decrease was mainly caused by the failure of CPP to enchant the voters in four urban areas with high proportion of seats in parliament: Kampong Cham, Pnom Penh, …

The Right To Improvise In Low-Wage Work, Michael M. Oswalt
The Right To Improvise In Low-Wage Work, Michael M. Oswalt
Cardozo Law Review
The resurgence of strikes in the non-union fast food and retail sectors has created unprecedented momentum for increases in state, local, and company-specific minimum wages. The once fantastical demand for a $15 an hour wage floor has been legislated into life in two states, four major cities, and counting. Early work, drawing from organizational studies, identified "improvisation" as the theoretical engine of the walkouts, and while that strategy remains, the ground has since shifted. Today's strikes are no longer just about McDonald's or Walmart but low-wage jobs generally, from child care, to adjunct teaching, to security, and beyond. This Article …

Bitcoin Versus Regulated Payment Systems: What Gives?, Lawrence J. Trautman, Alvin C. Harrell
Cardozo Law Review
The article explores the evolution and challenges of virtual currencies like Bitcoin, highlighting their potential to transform traditional payment systems while posing significant regulatory and jurisdictional difficulties. It argues that while virtual currencies offer benefits such as reduced transaction costs and financial inclusion, their decentralized nature and association with illicit activities necessitate a balanced approach to regulation. The article emphasizes the importance of adapting legal frameworks to accommodate innovation while addressing risks, ensuring a stable environment for virtual currencies to coexist with traditional monetary systems.
