Realizing The Gap Between Rationality And Information, Elayne E. Greenberg
Realizing The Gap Between Rationality And Information, Elayne E. Greenberg
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
The Online Journal requested that I evaluate Professor Strong’s empirical research, “Realizing Rationality: An Empirical Assessment of International Commercial Mediation,” reported in 23 Wash. & Lee. L. Rev. 1973 (2016). The purpose of Professor Strong’s research is to help “fill the informational gap” about international commercial mediation for the United Nations Commission on International Trade (hereinafter UNICITRAL) Working Group II (Arbitration and Conciliation) so that the Working Group could better assess whether, in fact, there is a need for a new UNCITRAL instrument to enforce global commercial mediation agreements. Professor Strong’s research offers insightful nuggets about international commercial mediation that …
Freshwater Wetland Creation In A Changing Urban Environment: Designing For Long-Term Viability, Aaron Thomas Ryan Brown
Freshwater Wetland Creation In A Changing Urban Environment: Designing For Long-Term Viability, Aaron Thomas Ryan Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization and wetland mitigation are increasingly common in coastal watersheds with expanding populations. These mitigation wetlands are intended to offset the functional and structural losses experienced when natural systems are degraded or destroyed. In the Tampa Bay watershed, urbanization is both expanding into the upper reaches of the watershed and intensifying in previously-developed areas, resulting in the creations of hundreds of freshwater mitigation wetlands. This dissertation utilized an existing database of mitigation wetlands, publicly available data, and field surveys to investigate the relationship between constructed wetlands and their surroundings and also determine how design affects wetland condition over time. The …

Equity In Microscale Urban Design And Walkability: A Photographic Survey Of Six Pittsburgh Streetscapes, Bradley Bereitschaft
Equity In Microscale Urban Design And Walkability: A Photographic Survey Of Six Pittsburgh Streetscapes, Bradley Bereitschaft
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
This paper explores inequity in neighborhood walkability at the micro-scale level by qualitatively examining six streetscapes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A photographic survey is used to highlight differences in the quality and design of the built environment among pairs of streetscapes with high or low social vulnerability but approximately equal quantitative Walk Scores®. The survey revealed discernible differences in the quality and maintenance of the built environment among those in more and less disadvantaged neighborhoods. This was true of several characteristics expected to affect walkability, including enclosure, transparency, complexity, and tidiness. Streetscapes in neighborhoods with high social vulnerability exhibited less contiguous …
Examining The Use Of Amazon’S Mechanical Turk For Edge Extraction Of The Occlusal Surface Of Fossilized Bovid Teeth, George K. Thiruvathukal, Gregory J. Matthews, Maxwell P. Luetkemeier, Juliet K. Brophy
Examining The Use Of Amazon’S Mechanical Turk For Edge Extraction Of The Occlusal Surface Of Fossilized Bovid Teeth, George K. Thiruvathukal, Gregory J. Matthews, Maxwell P. Luetkemeier, Juliet K. Brophy
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In order to reconstruct environments associated with Plio-Pleistocene hominins in southern Africa, researchers frequently rely upon the animals associated with the hominins, in particular, animals in the Family Bovidae. Bovids in southern Africa are typically identified by their teeth. However, identifying the taxon of a bovid tooth is challenging due to various biasing factors. Furthermore, inaccurate identification of fossil bovids can have significant consequences on the reconstructed paleoenvironment. Recent research on the classification of bovid fossil teeth has relied on using elliptical Fourier analysis to summarize the shape of the outline of the occlusal surface of the tooth and the …
Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis Of The Mississippi Embayment Incorporating Nonlinear Site Effects, Mahesh Singh Dhar
Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis Of The Mississippi Embayment Incorporating Nonlinear Site Effects, Mahesh Singh Dhar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Mississippi Embayment (ME) area is prone to damaging earthquakes as it lies over the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is considered the most seismically active zone in the central and eastern United States. Several attempts have been made to account for the influence of deep sediment deposits of the ME on the propagation of seismic waves. This study presents the seismic and liquefaction hazards of the ME by adding the local geologic conditions to the 2014 USGS National Seismic Hazard Model. Both equivalent linear and nonlinear site response codes have been used to determine the amplification distribution at a …
Ends, Means, Ideology, And Pride: Why The Axis Lost And What We Can Learn From Its Defeat, Jeffrey Record Dr.
Ends, Means, Ideology, And Pride: Why The Axis Lost And What We Can Learn From Its Defeat, Jeffrey Record Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author examines the Axis defeat in World War II and concludes that the two main causes were resource inferiority (after 1941) and strategic incompetence—i.e., pursuit of imperial ambitions beyond the reach of its actual power. Until 1941 Axis military fortunes thrived, but the addition in that year of the Soviet Union and the United States to the list of Axis enemies condemned the Axis to ultimate strategic defeat. Germany, Italy, and Japan all attempted to bite off more than they could chew and subsequently choked to death.
Switching Deformation Mode And Mechanisms During Subduction Of Continental Crust: A Case Study From Alpine Corsica, G Molli, L Menegon, A Malasoma
Switching Deformation Mode And Mechanisms During Subduction Of Continental Crust: A Case Study From Alpine Corsica, G Molli, L Menegon, A Malasoma
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The switching in deformation mode (from distributed to localized) and mechanisms (viscous versus frictional) represent a relevant issue in the frame of crustal deformation, being also connected with the concept of the brittle–ductile transition and seismogenesis. In a subduction environment, switching in deformation mode and mechanisms and scale of localization may be inferred along the subduction interface, in a transition zone between the highly coupled (seismogenic zone) and decoupled deeper aseismic domain (stable slip). However, the role of brittle precursors in nucleating crystal-plastic shear zones has received more and more consideration being now recognized as fundamental in some cases for …
"The New Millennium's Passion For Standing Live Witness To Things:” The Epidemiology Of Isolation, Addiction And Redemption In David Foster Wallace’S Infinite Jest, Natalie C. Helberg
"The New Millennium's Passion For Standing Live Witness To Things:” The Epidemiology Of Isolation, Addiction And Redemption In David Foster Wallace’S Infinite Jest, Natalie C. Helberg
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Infinite Jest is a one-thousand, seventy-nine page novel and it weighs almost three pounds; it is heavy in a literal and a spiritual sense. The novel is David Foster Wallace’s greatest achievement. It portrays characters who are dramatically isolated from one another and who cannot cope without some form of addiction. This addiction manifests itself in the form of an extreme dependence on drugs and/or technology to escape reality. This thesis first discusses the effects of technology on a society that is lonely and isolated. Then, two major characters with substance abuse issues are analyzed in an effort to understand …
Estimating The Proportions Of Large To Small Earthquakes In Seismic Regions With A Short Span Of Earthquake Magnitudes, Jerome Robert Kutliroff
Estimating The Proportions Of Large To Small Earthquakes In Seismic Regions With A Short Span Of Earthquake Magnitudes, Jerome Robert Kutliroff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The rate at which earthquakes occur is dependent on their magnitudes, a distribution quantified by the Gutenberg-Richter relation. This relation is characterized by a parameter, b, that is a measure of the dependence of the rate on the magnitude. Here, we develop a method to measure b and its associated uncertainty accurately. The maximum likelihood function of Aki (1965) generally used to estimate the b parameter is shown to apply only to a minimum span of magnitudes. Formulas are derived that are accurate for any magnitude span. These formulas also detect the regions of the Frequency-Magnitude Distribution (FMD) that minimize …
The Origin Of An Inquiry: Evolutionary Epistemology In James' Pragmatism, J. Ellis Perry
The Origin Of An Inquiry: Evolutionary Epistemology In James' Pragmatism, J. Ellis Perry
Episteme
Have scholars collectively failed to recognize the important role Darwin plays in James’s 1906-1907 Lowell Institute lectures on pragmatism? The goal of the paper is to elicit a “yes” verdict from the reader, although the author believes his study is insufficient for proving his intuition that Darwin played a central role in James’s thought in these lectures. The contention is that, given the importance of Pragmatism and the continued relevance of Darwinian science, it is worth the effort to read this classic James work in light of Darwin’s influence, in spite of Philip Weiner’s (and practically everyone else’s) lack of …

Assessing The Predictive Validity Of The Youth Level Of Service Case Management Inventory 2.0 In A Sample Of Rural Juvenile Offenders, Julie Frick
Masters Theses
This study evaluates the predictive validity of a juvenile risk need assessment, the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory 2.0 (YLS/CMI), on a rural population of 215 juvenile offenders using a logistic regression model. The study includes the use of social and demographic variables as control variables, including gender, age, race, special education status, offense type, history of abuse and neglect, and the presence or absence of a police department in the geographic location of crime. The result of the study shows that the YLS/CMI composite risk score significantly predicted recidivism, (x"=19.796, df=1, N=188, p ≤.01). Directions for future research, …
Stronger Together: Increasing Connections Between Academic And Public Libraries, Maureen Richards
Stronger Together: Increasing Connections Between Academic And Public Libraries, Maureen Richards
Collaborative Librarianship
Much has been written about collaborations between public and academic libraries. These collaborations generally take the form of joint libraries, special programs or consortia. They are motivated by the desire to do public outreach or community building or to provide better facilities, services or library resources to users from both library systems or, in the case of consortia, by economics.
Since the library website is now the most common entry point to an academic library, this paper explores the opportunities for building connections between an academic and public library’s resources by hyperlinking to public library resources. Deepening these connections supports …

Undertaking Educational Research Following The Introduction, Implementation, Evolution, And Hybridization Of Constructivist Instructional Models In An Australian Pbl High School, Adam Hendry, Gavin Hays, Kurt Challinor, Daniel Lynch
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the introduction, implementation, evolution, hybridization, and initial research into the constructivist instructional models deployed within a secondary (high) school in Australia. A concomitant aim is to relate some of the consequences of whole school pedagogical change, which have included the implementation of project- and problem-based learning, the flipped classroom, and a derivative hybridized form, referred to here as “flipped PBL.” Moreover, after a decade of using constructivist approaches, we initiated educational research to better understand some of the effects of these changes and to explore the reasons behind the …

Values-Based Leadership, M.S. Rao
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
It is imperative to underscore the urgent need for values-based leadership worldwide – in our governments, academic institutions, and businesses. The lack thereof explains the collapse of global companies such as Enron, Tyco, Lehman Brothers, WorldCom, and Global Crossing due to unethical practices. This clarion call to inject principled decision-making in all forms of life and work is demarcated by inspiring examples of ethical leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mother Teresa. It places emphasis more on the “means” of attainment rather than on “ends” to excel as ethical leaders. It outlines the characteristics of values-based leaders …
Numeracy Across The Curriculum In Australian Schools: Teacher Education Students’ And Practicing Teachers’ Views And Understandings Of Numeracy, Helen J. Forgasz, Gilah Leder, Jennifer Hall
Numeracy Across The Curriculum In Australian Schools: Teacher Education Students’ And Practicing Teachers’ Views And Understandings Of Numeracy, Helen J. Forgasz, Gilah Leder, Jennifer Hall
Numeracy
In this article, we confront the challenges to teacher education students and practicing teachers raised by the concept of numeracy and its place in the curriculum. In the Australian Curriculum, there is an expectation that teachers at all grade levels and in all subject areas develop students' numeracy capabilities. At Monash University, a public, research-intensive university, the largest university in Australia, graduate level teacher education students are now required to complete a course entitled Numeracy for Learners and Teachers. We describe the content of this course and, from an online survey, report findings of the impact on students' understandings …
Unifying The Oppressed Through Biofiction, Cain Boney
Unifying The Oppressed Through Biofiction, Cain Boney
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Why does Zora Neale Hurston combine the histories of African Americans and Hebrews in Moses, Man of the Mountain? For what reason does Colum McCann include Frederick Douglass and a Kenyan scholar in his Irish-focused novel TransAtlantic? Furthermore, why does Mario Vargas Llosa create a protagonist that repeatedly compares the oppressed conditions of the geographically disparate Irish, Congolese, and Peruvian peoples in Dream of the Celt ? All three of these biofiction authors close the gaps between cultures and continents in order to synthesize the experience of the oppressed on a global level. Moving beyond the genre capabilities …
College Enrollments Continue National Decline., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
College Enrollments Continue National Decline., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
If there is a statistic that all college administrators look at every year it is enrollments, the bread and butter of higher education for multiple reasons. First, all private colleges – and increasingly public ones – depend upon students enrolling in order to main- tain the financial flow to their institutions. Second, many public institutions have their state budget tied to the number of students they enroll. Third, the attractiveness of an institution of higher education is partly based on its enrollment success. No wonder everybody looks at those numbers every year with apprehension.
Enrollment numbers for the spring semester …
Finding Meanings: Using Photovoice To Explore Smoking In Rural Low-Income Women, Star Mitchell
Finding Meanings: Using Photovoice To Explore Smoking In Rural Low-Income Women, Star Mitchell
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: High rates of smoking-related chronic disease in low-income rural women and limited access to and use of quality health care has created a challenge to tobacco cessation efforts. These factors support the international call for creative and targeted research approaches that offer new insight and meaning into the relationship between smoking and social determinants of health (Garrett, Dube, Bann, & McAfee, 2015; World Health Organization, 2008). Research has provided a clear picture of how many people smoke, who smokes, and how much they smoke. Unanswered questions remain that are relative to why certain demographic groups of people continue to …
The Potential Effects Of Percolating Snowmelt On Palynological Records From Firn And Glacier Ice, Michael E. Ewin, Carl A. Reese, Matthew A. Nolan
The Potential Effects Of Percolating Snowmelt On Palynological Records From Firn And Glacier Ice, Michael E. Ewin, Carl A. Reese, Matthew A. Nolan
Faculty Publications
The effects of meltwater percolation on pollen in snow, firn and glacial ice are not fully understood and currently hamper the use of pollen in ice-core studies of paleoclimate. Several studies have suggested that, due to grain size, pollen is not mobilized by meltwater transport. However, these findings contradict many ice-core pollen studies that show pollen concentrations in snow and firn are much higher than concentrations found in the ice layers they eventually form. This study addresses one aspect of this question by investigating whether meltwater percolation can effectively transport pollen within a snowpack. We used nine Styrofoam coolers filled …

Restoring גלה Ii From Exile: Discovering The Homonyms Spelled ג-ל-ה By Examining Their Usage In The Hebrew Bible, Josiah D. Peeler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the evidence in the Hebrew Bible of the ancient Hebrew lexeme גלה. The aim is to determine how many roots are represented by the spelling ג-ל-ה in the Hebrew Bible. With the help of verbal valency theory, I examine the complementation patterns of גלה.
Previous attempts to understand the ancient Hebrew גלה focus on semantics. I challenge this approach and suggest that semantics alone is insufficient for understanding גלה (Chapter 1). Thus, I incorporate the clausal syntax of גלה with attention to גלה’s appearance in the different binyanim and the different complement patterns that accompany גלה’s different …

Don’T Get The Epizootus! Challenges And Promises Of Modern Rural Health Care, Michael Daley
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Rural communities face a crisis in terms of access, funding for health care, and the overall health needs of these communities. There are also shortages of health care professionals in rural areas. As national priorities shift away from health care to border security, small towns may be hard pressed to meet their residents’ health care needs. Professional advocacy for rural people to address these issues is recommended.

Social Workers’ Evidence-Based Practice Use And Challenges In Rural Environments: A Systematic Review, Mingun Lee
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Over the past decade, the demand for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in the social work field has increased. Previous studies indicate that EBP promotes clinical decision making based on current best evidence and decreases the use of ineffective interventions. However, social workers still face a variety of barriers to become evidence-based practitioners. Particularly, social workers practicing in rural areas face increased barriers to make use of evidence in practice. This study conducted a systematic review of current literature to find evidence related to social workers’ use of EBP and their barriers in rural settings. Reviews were limited to social work studies …

An Assessment Of The Strengths And Needs Of Rural Social Workers In The Northwestern United States, Jon William Talebreza-May, Rachel Jensen, Nathan Shay
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Although rural social work continues to be on the fringe of social work practice in the United States, a committed group of practitioners work to update and expand upon current knowledge (Lohmann & Lohmann, 2005). Studies have been carried out across the country as to the state of rural social work practice, the unique barriers and strengths that come from this line of work, as well as the problems that lead social work to be necessary in rural areas (Daley, 2015; Lohman & Lohmann, 2005; Mackie et al., 2016). Though well-researched in the United States, examination of rural social work …
