Quantum Physics And Relativity In Lovecraft's Fiction, Garrison Mccammon Jul 2017

Quantum Physics And Relativity In Lovecraft's Fiction, Garrison Mccammon

English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows

The early twentieth century brought about some of the best and most influential horror or weird tales ever written in the English speaking world. The most impressive and most lauded author of the group composed of such figures as Algernon Blackwood, M. R. James, Arthur Machen, Clark A. Smith, and Robert E. Howard was H. P. Lovecraft. Posthumously declared the literary successor to Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft’s fiction and tales of terror have cast such a huge shadow that every significant author in weird writing since his passing has claimed him as a literary heir. Lovecraft’s works were a landmark …

Music And Race In The American West, William Steven Schneider Jul 2017

Music And Race In The American West, William Steven Schneider

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the complexities of race relations in the nineteenth century American West. The groups considered here are African Americans, Anglo Americans, Chinese, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans. In recent decades historians of the West have begun to tell the narratives of racial minorities. This study adopts the aims of these scholars through a new lens--music. Ultimately, this thesis argues that historians can use music, both individual songs and broader conceptions about music, to understand the complex and contradictory race relations of the nineteenth century west.

Proceeding thematically, the first chapter explores the ways Anglo Americans used music to …

Contexts Of Reception And Constructions Of Islam: Second Generation Muslim Immigrants In Post-9/11 America, Shahriyar Smith Jul 2017

Contexts Of Reception And Constructions Of Islam: Second Generation Muslim Immigrants In Post-9/11 America, Shahriyar Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 fundamentally transformed the context of reception for Muslim immigrants in the U.S., shifting it from neutral to negative while also brightening previously blurred boundaries between established residents and the Muslim minority. This study explores how second-generation Muslim immigrants have experienced and reacted to post-9/11 contexts of reception. It is based on an analysis of ten semi-structured in-depth interviews that were conducted throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area from January to April of 2016. It finds experiences of discrimination to be primarily affected by two factors: public institutions and gender. It also finds, …

Historicity Of City And Town Names In The Province Of Cebu, Jiolito Benitez

CNU Journal of Higher Education

Place names are an important part of social life as they signify the collective identity of the inhabitants. Since place names signify social identity, it is important to determine the historicity of the narrative that trace their etymologies and origins. This study examined the historicity of the existing name narratives of the cities and towns of the province of Cebu contained in the fifty-five volumes comprising the histories of Cebu Province, Cebu Provincial Capitol together with 9 cities and 44 towns. The name narratives are categorized as either historical, most likely historical, most likely not historical, and not historical. Since …

Age Appropriate Treatment Of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis In South Africa, Brittney Jayne Sullivan Jul 2017

Age Appropriate Treatment Of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis In South Africa, Brittney Jayne Sullivan

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the time from DR-TB diagnosis to treatment initiation for people in South Africa with DR-TB with and without HIV and to evaluate the influence of age on the timing of treatment initiation after controlling for patient and health system characteristics. It was hypothesized that younger patients would have a greater number of days from DR-TB diagnosis to DR-TB treatment initiation. Additionally, we address the knowledge gaps pertaining to prescription of guideline-based treatment for DR-TB at treatment initiation and the influence of individual and health system factors on prescribed treatment for youth and …

The project employed a blend of traditional and technology-based teaching methods in order to introduce a technology like Skype in a bi-national learning environment in Turkey. Students collaborated and interacted with their international counterparts in two different virtual contexts. First, classrooms …

Homeowner Preferences After September 11th, A Microdata Approach, Adam D. Nowak, Juan Sayago-Gomez Jul 2017

Homeowner Preferences After September 11th, A Microdata Approach, Adam D. Nowak, Juan Sayago-Gomez

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

The existence of homeowner preferences - specifically homeowner preferences for neighbors - is fundamental to economic models of sorting. This paper investigates whether or not the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) impacted local preferences for Arab neighbors. We test for changes in preferences using a differences-in-differences approach in a hedonic pricing model. Relative to sales before 9/11, we find properties within 0.1 miles of an Arab homeowner sold at a 1.4% discount in the 180 days after 9/11. The results are robust to a number of specifications including time horizon, event date, distance, time, alternative ethnic groups, and …

Embodying The West: A Literary And Cultural History Of Environment, Body, And Belief, Julie E. Williams Jul 2017

Embodying The West: A Literary And Cultural History Of Environment, Body, And Belief, Julie E. Williams

English Language and Literature ETDs

My dissertation challenges the dominant narrative identity about Western embodiment and opens the field of Western literary studies as it explores what the West looks like to women writers for whom it is not a space of regeneration through violence. I argue that women’s writing reconceptualizes Western literature, creating a counter-narrative about American identity by shaping a space for and a discourse about the embodied experiences that have been marginalized, silenced, and ignored. Through examining discourses of health and embodiment in women’s writing about the American West from the 1880s to the present day, my study brings together a diverse …

Critical Autobiography As Research, Anthony Walker Jul 2017

Critical Autobiography As Research, Anthony Walker

The Qualitative Report

Identity is a reflection of how people view themselves within the social structure (Campbell, 2010; Hill & Thomas, 2000). Too often these identities are mirror images of normalized labels and affiliations defined by, and through, social norms and values. Introspective of social constructs and teachings of normalcy, often times one’s identity and status is never questioned (Ramsey, 2004). Juxtaposing systemic thinking with personal knowledge, this article offers insights into the uses and contributions of critical autobiographical research as a both paradigm of research and practice. This article seeks to link the application of critical autobiography with educational practice and theory …

Moving From Generalisations To Specificity About Mangrove –Saltmarsh Dynamics, Kerrylee Rogers, Ken W. Krauss Jul 2017

Moving From Generalisations To Specificity About Mangrove –Saltmarsh Dynamics, Kerrylee Rogers, Ken W. Krauss

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Spatial and temporal variability in factors influencing mangrove establishment and survival affects the distribution of mangrove, particularly near their latitudinal limit, where mangrove expansion into saltmarsh is conspicuous. In this paper the spatial variability in mangrove distribution and variability in factors influencing mangrove establishment and survival during the Quaternary period are reviewed, focusing on research at latitudinal limits in Australia and mainland USA. Despite similarities in the response of mangrove to some drivers, the expression of these drivers is both spatially and temporally variable, demonstrating the need for analyses of mangrove-saltmarsh dynamics to move beyond generalizations and incorporate regional and …

On The Plains Of Moab: Reflections For The End Times, Patrick Mazani

All Books

Signs are everywhere and are clear that we are heading toward uncertainty. People are speculative on either our immediate or long-term future. Our life situation is deteriorating momentarily. We admit that we are in a crisis. The author addresses our contemporary plight by drawing our attention to the final moments of ancient Israel on their forty-year journey from Egypt to Canaan. The author focuses on this historical biblical event and draws practical lessons that amazingly impact people today who are living in the very last stages of the earth’s history. He shows that we can learn from past history and …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Heterandria Formosa (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) In Lowndes County, Georgia, Jason C. Chaney, David L. Bechler Jul 2017

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Heterandria Formosa (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) In Lowndes County, Georgia, Jason C. Chaney, David L. Bechler

Georgia Journal of Science

Heretofore in the literature, Heterandria formosa had not been reported from Lowndes County, Georgia. Based on a survey of Lowndes County; we discovered eight localities from the southeastern portion of the county that collectively produced 30 specimens of H. formosa. The southeastern portion of the county is primarily flatwoods with numerous wetlands and low gradient streams compared to the remainder of the county, which is typified by a more upland habitat with greater relief and greater stream gradients. It is postulated that the greater stream gradients inhibited the migration of H. formosa into the southwestern and northern portions of …

Can Big Data And Predictive Analytics Improve Social And Environmental Sustainability?, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, T Papadopoulos, Z Luo, Sf Wamba, D Roubaud

Plymouth Business School

Although literature indicates that big data and predictive analytics (BDPA)convey a distinct organisational capability, little is known about their performance effects in particular contextual conditions (inter alia, national context and culture, and firm size). Grounding our investigation in the dynamic capability views and organisational culture and based on a sample of 205 Indian manufacturing organisations, we empirically investigate the effects of BDPA on social performance (SP)and environmental performance (EP)using variance based structural equation modelling (i.e. PLS). We find that BDPA has significant impact on SP/EP. However, we did not find evidence for moderating role of flexible orientation and control orientation …

Trilobite Extinctions, Facies Changes And The Roece Carbon Isotope Excursion At The Cambrian Series 2–3 Boundary, Great Basin, Western Usa, Luke E. Faggetter, Paul B. Wignall, Sara B. Pruss, Robert J. Newton, Yadong Sun, Stephen F. Crowley

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The mass extinction of the olenellid trilobites occurred around the Cambrian Series 2–Series 3 boundary. Like many other crises, it coincided with a negative carbon isotope excursion but the associated palaeoenvironmental changes remain unclear. To investigate the causal mechanism for this event, we report facies changes, pyrite framboid petrography and carbon isotope values from Cambrian Series 2–Series 3 (traditionally Early–Middle Cambrian) boundary strata of the Carrara Formation (Death Valley region, California) and Pioche Formation (Nevada). These data reveal regionally changing water depths from high-energy, nearshore facies (oolitic grainstone) to more offshore silty marl and finer-grained carbonate mudstone. In the Carrara …

Measuring Media Literacy For Media Education: Development Of A Questionnaire For Teachers' Competencies, Mathea Simons, Wil Meeus, Jan T'Sas

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Effective media education requires that teachers dispose of sufficient media literacy and that they have the competencies to promote media literacy in students. This article describes the development of a questionnaire to measure these competencies individually or as a team. The questionnaire was developed in five stages. A systematic and critical listing of existing inventories resulted in a preliminary questionnaire. In the final stage, the questionnaire was submitted to a representative sample of 454 teachers and 219 student teachers, and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The results show that the questionnaire is sufficiently valid and reliable.

The Ivory Tower, Urban Growth, And State Subjugation: An Historical Analysis On The Construction Of Student Identities And The Public Good During University Generated Redevelopment Projects, Jacob R. Wolff Jul 2017

The Ivory Tower, Urban Growth, And State Subjugation: An Historical Analysis On The Construction Of Student Identities And The Public Good During University Generated Redevelopment Projects, Jacob R. Wolff

Geography ETDs

Having become almost cliché in academic discourses, the term gentrification offers a conceptualization of sociospatial transformation too narrow for contemporary understandings of inequality within the post-industrial city. Generalizations of a wealthy populous displacing working-class and marginalized populations fail to address the diversity, complexity, and scope of economic hollowing-out and fail to fully account for other incoming subpopulations such as the emergent “creative class,” comprised of university-educated individuals who are not necessarily considered affluent by traditional economic measures. To this end, scholars in the United Kingdom have identified university neighborhood formation as a significant yet distinct process of place production that …

Eco-System Complementarities And Urban Encroachment: A Swot Analysis Of The East Kolkata Wetlands, India, Sarmila Banerjee, Debanjana Dey

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

To understand the complex process caused by the plants, microorganisms, soil matrix and substances in the wastewater and their interactions with sunshine in a hot and humid climate, researchers from different corners of the globe are taking keen interest in the functioning of the East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) as a tutorial ecosystem. However, due to excessive pressure of urban sprawl of Kolkata, a densely populated metropolitan city, this system is facing some threats to sustenance over the decades. This paper attempts to illustrate the inherent nature of eco-system complementarities between the city of Kolkata and EKW, threats imparted by the …

Recommendations For Urban Biodiversity Conservation In The Context Of Landscape Preference In Singapore, Yu Ting Joanne Khew, Makoto Yokohari Jul 2017

Recommendations For Urban Biodiversity Conservation In The Context Of Landscape Preference In Singapore, Yu Ting Joanne Khew, Makoto Yokohari

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Effective urban biodiversity conservation requires that planners facilitate public acceptance towards biodiversity and its associated habitats within urban areas. This research quantifies the biodiversity conservation potential of landscapes of varying human interference in Singapore and functions under a backdrop that the general public has an aesthetically-driven preference for manicured landscapes. Biodiversity counts for conservation-targeted species from six biodiversity categories species [seed plants, ferns and fern allies, mammals, reptiles, birds and insects (excluding Lepidoptera)] across four landscape types show that naturalistic landscapes (primary and secondary vegetation) harbored at least eight times the number of conservation-target species than manicured landscapes and urban …

Characterization And Visualization Of Spatial Patterns Of Urbanisation And Sprawl Through Metrics And Modeling, Bharath H. Aithal, Vinay Shivamurthy, T. V. Ramachandra

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Characterisation of spatial patterns of urban dynamics of Coimbatore, India is done using temporal remote sensing data of 1989 to 2013 with spatial metrics. Urban morphology at local levels is assessed through density gradients and zonal approach show of higher spatial heterogeneity during late1980’s and early 90’s. Urban expansion picked up at city outskirts and buffer region dominated with large number of urban fragments indicating the sprawl. Urban space has increased from 1.87% (1989) to 21.26 % (2013) with the decline of other land uses particularly vegetation. Higher heterogeneous land use classes during 90’s, give way for a homogeneous landscape …
