Structural Violence And Gender-Based Violence In The United States, Sarbinaz Z. Bekmuratova
Structural Violence And Gender-Based Violence In The United States, Sarbinaz Z. Bekmuratova
Theses & Dissertations
Three components of the dissertation project examined the relationship between three different constructs of structural violence and women’s experience of different violence types in their lifetime in the United States. The violence types examined in the study included psychological aggression, coercive control and entrapment, physical violence, stalking, sexual violence, and rape. 2010 National Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Survey with the final sample size of 9,827 was used for all three portions of the study to analyze the association of structural violence with six types of violence. Additional datasets used were Institute for Women’s Policy Research’s Status of Women …

Articles
CD14 is a multifunctional receptor expressed on many cell types and has been shown to mediate immune response resulting in the activation of an inflammatory cascade, with polymorphism of its promoter (rs2569190) found to be associated with susceptibility to several diseases. In malaria infection, the CD14 gene demonstrated a pathogenic profile in regulating experimental cerebral malaria, with reports of elevated levels of soluble CD14 in serum of patients but no definitive conclusion. We present a detailed analysis of genetic diversity of CD14 promoter gene (snp −159 C/T; rs2519190) polymorphism between a malaria-infected group and uninfected controls and its association with …
Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Communication
The Anthropocene is a contested term. As I conceptualize it throughout this dissertation, the Anthropocene is defined by an increased coupling of social and environmental systems at the global scale such that the by-products of human processes dominate the global stratigraphic record. Additionally, I connect the term to a worldview that sees this increased coupling as an existential threat to humanity's ability to sustain life on the planet. Awareness that the planet-wide scale of this coupling is fundamentally a new element in earth history is implicit in both understandings. How individuals and communities are impacted by this change varies greatly …
Compulsory Education And Resilience In Northern Alaska: The Role Of Social Learning And Youth In Healthy Sustainable Communities, Douglas Scott Cost
Compulsory Education And Resilience In Northern Alaska: The Role Of Social Learning And Youth In Healthy Sustainable Communities, Douglas Scott Cost
Indigenous Studies
How can education in the Arctic foster individual and community resilience in a time of rapid social-environmental change? Education and learning, have powerful potential to affect future social-environmental system resilience. This research unpacks and examines the connections and feedbacks among studies of social-environmental systems (SESs), resilience, compulsory education and Indigenous knowledge. The last few decades have witnessed global recognition of rapid climate change in the Arctic; primarily the diminishing cryosphere. This has led to discussion and debate over the role of schools in addressing local knowledge, environmental changes, and community priorities. In the U.S. state of Alaska and in other …
Energy-Efficient Homes In Alaska: Historical And Contemporary Perspectives On Adaptation And Innovation, Yasmeen Hossain
Energy-Efficient Homes In Alaska: Historical And Contemporary Perspectives On Adaptation And Innovation, Yasmeen Hossain
Indigenous Studies
Global climate change is largely caused by greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources. The building industry is responsible for over 40% of global carbon emissions. Almost half of the energy consumption in buildings is from space heating and cooling. The incorporation of energy efficiency in homes has a large potential to mitigate future climate change impacts while at the same time aiding household members to adapt to the effects of global change. This dissertation explores this potential in Alaska, where in addition to climate change impacts, residents are vulnerable to high oil prices affecting not only their energy security, but …
Toward Arctic Transitions And Sustainability: Modeling Risks And Resilience Across Scales Of Governance, Berill Blair
Toward Arctic Transitions And Sustainability: Modeling Risks And Resilience Across Scales Of Governance, Berill Blair
Natural Resources
The Arctic region has been the subject of international attention in recent years. The magnitude of impacts from global climate change, land-use change, and speculations about economic development and accessible polar shipping lanes have intensified this focus. As a result, the potential to manage complex ecological, social and political relationships in the context of changes, risks and opportunities is the focus of a large and growing body of research. This dissertation contributes to the expanding scholarship on managing Arctic social-ecological systems for resilience by answering the question: What conditions improve cross-scale learning and resilience in nested social-ecological systems experiencing rapid …
The Effects Of Freezing And Storage Time On The Quality Of Reindeer Meat, George A. Aguiar
The Effects Of Freezing And Storage Time On The Quality Of Reindeer Meat, George A. Aguiar
Natural Resources
Restaurants, wholesalers and retailers of fresh meat require a year round consistent supply of uniform quality product to sustain demand and justify niche market costs such as advertisement and stocking product. Frozen reindeer meat could be stored, short or long term to increase availability provided there are no adverse effects of freezing. No studies to date have evaluated the effects of freezing and storage time on reindeer meat quality. Nine reindeer steers (castrated bulls; age 2.5 years) were fed a balanced milled ration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Reindeer Research Program (RRP) facility at the Agricultural Forestry Experiment …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Undergraduate courses provide valuable opportunities to train and empower students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to advance society in more sustainable directions. This article emphasizes the value of bridging primary scientific research with undergraduate education through the presentation of an integrated experiential learning and primary research model called Farm-based Authentic Research Modules in Sustainability Sciences (FARMS). FARMS are collaboratively designed with agricultural stakeholders through a community needs assessment on pressing food system issues and opportunities with the objective for faculty and students to jointly identify evidence-based management solutions. We illustrate the implementation of FARMS in an undergraduate course in …
Sand Dune Field Paleoenvironment, Paleoecology, And Human Environmental Interaction In The Middle Tanana River Valley Near The Gerstle River, Subarctic Alaska: The Late Glacial To The Middle Holocene, Robert C. Bowman
Anthropology
This study was conducted to explore paleoenvironmental change within the Gerstle-Sawmill Dune Field (GSDF), located just west of the Gerstle River in the middle Tanana River valley, Interior Alaska from the late Glacial to the middle Holocene. Specifically, this study was undertaken to document human-environment interaction on the landscape. Geoarchaeological methods were used in order to determine the history of sand dune development across the area, how the local ecological systems changed through time, and determine prehistoric human use of environment and response to environmental and ecological change. The data collected from these locations was used to create a model …
The Place Of Private Property In Land Use Law: A Relational Examination Of Ontario's Quarry Conflicts, Estair Suarez Van Wagner
The Place Of Private Property In Land Use Law: A Relational Examination Of Ontario's Quarry Conflicts, Estair Suarez Van Wagner
PhD Dissertations
Land use law structures the way we make decisions about how we live together and with the world around us. In doing so, it shapes our relationships not only with the people around us, but with the places we inhabit and encounter. This dissertation examines how land use law structures the relations between people and the more-than-human world to uphold the ownership model of property relations and to privilege particular forms of land use. Through documentary and interview-based qualitative research, it presents an eco-relational examination of one of the most contentious land uses in Ontario aggregate mineral extraction.
The primacy …
Unsupervised Multi-Scale Change Detection From Sar Imagery For Monitoring Natural And Anthropogenic Disasters, Olaniyi A. Ajadi
Unsupervised Multi-Scale Change Detection From Sar Imagery For Monitoring Natural And Anthropogenic Disasters, Olaniyi A. Ajadi
Geosciences
Radar remote sensing can play a critical role in operational monitoring of natural and anthropogenic disasters. Despite its all-weather capabilities, and its high performance in mapping, and monitoring of change, the application of radar remote sensing in operational monitoring activities has been limited. This has largely been due to: (1) the historically high costs associated with obtaining radar data; (2) slow data processing, and delivery procedures; and (3) the limited temporal sampling that was provided by spaceborne radar-based satellites. Recent advances in the capabilities of spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors have developed an environment that now allows for SAR …
The Phylogenetics And Evolutionary History Of The Northern Latitude Plant Genus Therorhodion (Maxim.) Small (Ericaceae), Margaret G. Oliver
The Phylogenetics And Evolutionary History Of The Northern Latitude Plant Genus Therorhodion (Maxim.) Small (Ericaceae), Margaret G. Oliver
Biological Sciences
Taxonomic uncertainty in the Arctic-alpine flowering plant genus Therorhodion (Maxim.) Small (Ericaceae) can be attributed to two distinctly different viewpoints representing the taxonomic diversity. Russian taxonomists recognize two species, one with two subspecies, whereas three distinct species are recognized in North America following a broader species concept. Therorhodion redowskianum Hutch. is restricted to Asia, and is unambiguously recognized by both viewpoints. Therorhodion camtschaticum Small and T. glandulosum Standl. ex Small have an amphiberingian distribution in eastern Asia and Alaska with T. glandulosum sometimes recognized as a subspecies of T. camtschaticum. Investigating this taxonomic disagreement creates an opportunity to learn more …
Cowboy Professionalism: A Cultural Study Of Big-Mountain Tourism In The Last Frontier, Forest J. Wagner
Cowboy Professionalism: A Cultural Study Of Big-Mountain Tourism In The Last Frontier, Forest J. Wagner
Arctic and Northern Studies
Geographical features and cultural traits may influence the character of big-mountain tourism in Alaska. For example, Alaska's wild landscape, rich climbing and skiing history, and cultural mythos of wilderness and frontier fostered its status as a major destination for niche big-mountain tourism. Growth in the industry since the 1980s has been phenomenal, though a change threatens the identity of mountain guides of the region, demanding they accept international standards for their self-regulating and uniquely Alaskan version of big-mountain tourism. This research project explored big-mountain niche tourism in Alaska, considering the influences of wilderness and frontier concepts on the tourism culture …
Arctic Sea Ice Trafficability: New Strategies For A Changing Icescape, Dyre Oliver Dammann
Arctic Sea Ice Trafficability: New Strategies For A Changing Icescape, Dyre Oliver Dammann
Geosciences
Sea ice is an important part of the Arctic social-environmental system, in part because it provides a platform for human transportation and for marine flora and fauna that use the ice as a habitat. Sea ice loss projected for coming decades is expected to change ice conditions throughout the Arctic, but little is known about the nature and extent of anticipated changes and in particular potential implications for over-ice travel and ice use as a platform. This question has been addressed here through an extensive effort to link sea ice use and key geophysical properties of sea ice, drawing upon …

Development Of A Parameterization For Mesoscale Hydrological Modeling And Application To Landscape And Climate Change In The Interior Alaska Boreal Forest Ecosystem, Abraham Melesse Endalamaw
Atmospheric Sciences
The Interior Alaska boreal forest ecosystem is one of the largest ecosystems on Earth and lies between the warmer southerly temperate and colder Arctic regions. The ecosystem is underlain by discontinuous permafrost. The presence or absence of permafrost primarily controls water pathways and ecosystem composition. As a result, the region hosts two distinct ecotypes that transition over a very short spatial scale - often on the order of meters. Accurate mesoscale hydrological modeling of the region is critical as the region is experiencing unprecedented ecological and hydrological changes that have regional and global implications. However, accurate representation of the landscape …
"Are We Building Biking Solidarity": Gendered, Racial, And Spatial Barriers To Bicycling In Portland, Oregon, Kyla Jean Tompkins
"Are We Building Biking Solidarity": Gendered, Racial, And Spatial Barriers To Bicycling In Portland, Oregon, Kyla Jean Tompkins
Dissertations and Theses
Although Portland, Oregon is widely regarded as a "bike friendly" city, its bike equity remains in question. This thesis explores the barriers to biking that women and people of color face in Portland. This research uses feminist geography scholarship to understand how cycling spaces are unequal for marginalized cyclists. Using data from 28 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with infrequent and marginalized cyclists, I found that gender and race inequalities shape their barriers to biking. A hegemonic white, elite, and masculine bike culture controls the domination of cycling spaces. Women's gendered spatial inequalities are shaped by their childrearing demands, geography of fear, …

The housing market has come back with a vengeance in metro parts of Nebraska. Demographics play an important part in the reason why. This session will discuss the consumer lifecycle and how renting and rental unit construction boomed since the economic downturn as the large segment of millennials were at ages where people are most apt to rent. Now millennials are pushing into ages where marriage and children lead to home ownership, which will support the housing market as demand increases. Our panelists will discuss these and other factors that impact housing in both urban and rural parts of the …
Clash Of Cultures: Epistemic Communities, Negotiation Theory, And International Lawmaking, S. I. Strong
Clash Of Cultures: Epistemic Communities, Negotiation Theory, And International Lawmaking, S. I. Strong
Akron Law Review
International lawmaking has become an increasingly important feature in today’s globalized society, although the process is often complicated and less than transparent to outsiders. Most scholars seeking to understand international lawmaking adopt a political paradigm. However, it is critical to consult other analytical models if every facet of the process is to be fully appreciated.
This Article expands the conventional understanding about international lawmaking by applying a negotiation-analytic perspective to certain ongoing deliberations at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). In particular, the analysis considers how disparities between different epistemic communities could affect the shape and future …

Contemporary Issues in Educational Leadership
Student access to arts education, and the quality of such instruction in the nation’s public schools, continue to be of concern to policymakers, educators, and families. Specifically, research has focused on the questions: To what extent do students receive instruction in the arts? Under what conditions is the instruction provided? The passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was a significant move by the Senate, as they had not considered K-12 public education legislation on the Senate floor since 2001. Under this federal law, the arts are included as part of a “well-rounded education” requiring that the arts have …
