Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli Aug 2017

Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli

Dissertations - ALL

In which ways do intellectuals affect social and political mobilization? How do they impact the trajectory of contention – the kind of mobilization and its developments - through their ideological work? Prominent intellectuals seem to play a relevant role in contentious politics, yet this role is still undertheorized. In this project, I analyze this question in the context of contemporary Arab Salafism, a particularly literal interpretation of Sunni Islam. I seek to unpack the processes by which prominent Islamist intellectuals impact and shape two Salafi currents originating and operating across Jordan during the 1990s and beyond. The first current is …

"Don't Try And Play Me Out!": The Performances And Possibilities Of Digital Black Womanhood, Latoya Lydia Sawyer Aug 2017

"Don't Try And Play Me Out!": The Performances And Possibilities Of Digital Black Womanhood, Latoya Lydia Sawyer

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation explores the practices and possibilities of Black women’s identity performances on social media. Despite claims that the United States is now “post-racial,” in recent years there have been several examples of negative perceptions and hostile receptions to Black women’s discourse and literacy practices on- and offline. Simultaneously, we have seen hashtags (#BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName) and user-generated videos created by Black women spark movements and create change. This dissertation extends the theoretical framework of online identity performance (Grabill and Pigg) by looking specifically at ways in which Black women perform their identities online and its outcomes. In chapter one, …

Forging Titans: The Rise Of Industrial Capitalism In The Northern Forest, 1850-1950, Jason Lee Newton Aug 2017

Forging Titans: The Rise Of Industrial Capitalism In The Northern Forest, 1850-1950, Jason Lee Newton

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation describes the historical processes that made farmers and rural laborers into a coherent class of wage working lumberjacks and it tracks how this class became an iconic symbol of masculinity in twentieth-century America. "Forging Titans" argues that, as rural America industrialized, the built environment and bodies of workers became parts of nature and these natural forces were mobilized to increase the scale and efficiency of production to reach industrial levels. Because lumberjacks were seen as part of nature, they became masculine icons for self-diagnosed, overcivilized, urban, corporate elites who were looking outside the city for examples of natural …

Rotational Deployments Vs. Forward Stationing: How Can The Army Achieve Assurance And Deterrence Efficiently And Effectively?, John R. Deni Dr. Aug 2017

Rotational Deployments Vs. Forward Stationing: How Can The Army Achieve Assurance And Deterrence Efficiently And Effectively?, John R. Deni Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Army’s force posture is out of balance, with a greater percentage of troops stationed in the United States than at any time since the late 1940s. This has forced an over-reliance on lengthy, continuous rotational deployments to achieve deterrence and assurance in theaters such as northeast Asia and Europe. This finding is based on a 9-month study assessing the costs and benefits of rotational deployments and forward stationing. The analysis reveals that in terms of fiscal cost, training readiness, morale and family readiness, and diplomatic factors, the United States could likely achieve deterrence and assurance objectives more efficiently and …

What Rises Above The White Noise: The Possibility Of Hearing Truth In A Post-Truth World, Harriet Fraser, Rob Fraser Aug 2017

What Rises Above The White Noise: The Possibility Of Hearing Truth In A Post-Truth World, Harriet Fraser, Rob Fraser

The Goose

This installation in a valley in the UK’s Lake District National Park taps into the idea of communication, the problem of apparent fact and post-truth, and which voices are being heard when it comes to standing up for the environment. In consideration of post-truth and the confusion between fact and fiction, particularly with regard to issues about environment, this art installation explores the possibility of clarity in voices that are heard above the white noise of facts, partial truths and information overload. It is a site-specific installation, created around a single tree and a rapidly flowing river in the Lake …

Combined Universal Kriging And Kalman Filter Techniques To Improve Wind Speed Prediction For Northeastern U.S., Alexander Samalot Aug 2017

Combined Universal Kriging And Kalman Filter Techniques To Improve Wind Speed Prediction For Northeastern U.S., Alexander Samalot

Master's Theses

The scope of this study is to identify and improve wind speed prediction errors for storms that have impacted the Northeastern United States during 2003-2014. Accurate wind speed prediction under storm occurrences is significant to identify and assess impacts to the environment and critical infrastructure. Post-processing of a numerical weather prediction model (Weather Research and Forecasting-WRF) was used in the form of Universal Kriging for spatial interpolation and Kalman Filter for bias reduction. Two strategies for using the Kalman Filter in combination with Universal Kriging are investigated and assessed. Universal Kriging of Kalman Filter corrections reduced all error statistics of …

Analyzing Riparian Zone Ecosystem Services Bundles To Instruct River Management, Looy K Van, Thierry Tormos, Yves Souchon, David Gilvear

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ecosystem service framework is now well accepted for focussing management strategies to preserve and restore ecosystems. Its implementation remains challenging, however, due to the environment’s complexity and dynamics that interfere with ecosystems’ ability to provide the services. Here, we question whether we can show where and how to intervene in riparian corridors to restore specific ecosystem services without endangering others. Specific hypotheses in this context are for the spatial aggregation of ecosystem services delivered by riparian corridors with respect to naturalness (1), to the existence of bundles of ecosystem services (2), and finally for the scale sensitivity of this …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The use of models by ecologists and environmental managers, to inform environmental management and decision-making, has grown exponentially in the past 50 yr. Due to logistical, economical, and theoretical benefits, model users frequently transfer preexisting models to new sites where data are scarce. Modelers have made significant progress in understanding how to improve model generalizability during model development. However, models are always imperfect representations of systems and are constrained by the contextual frameworks used during their development. Thus, model users need better ways to evaluate the possibility of unintentional misapplication when transferring models to new sites. We propose a method …

An Accuracy Study Of Rtk Gnss Positioning Applied To Comparing Maps For Bentgrass Habitat Modeling, Jinwon Chung Aug 2017

An Accuracy Study Of Rtk Gnss Positioning Applied To Comparing Maps For Bentgrass Habitat Modeling, Jinwon Chung

Doctoral Dissertations

Theory and previous research suggest that sky obstructions and humidity can degrade global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning accuracy for static observation sessions. It is reasonable to suppose that these effects might be even worse for real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, because the observer will likely collect fewer observations for RTK positioning than for a static occupation, so the statistics used to estimate the positions have fewer data to work with. These effects have not been thoroughly studied, which provided the motivation to conduct several experiments to quantity the effects. Temperature and humidity are variables of interest, so the first experiment …

(Another) Battle In The Clouds, Mél Hogan Aug 2017

(Another) Battle In The Clouds, Mél Hogan

The Goose

At age ten, in 1918, Rachel Carson entered a writing contest and won. In "Battle in the Clouds", Carson wrote about the sky as a battlefield, where a soldier’s life is momentarily spared because of an act of bravery undeniable even by his enemies. They watch in awe and admiration rather than shoot. For my reimagining of the present as womb rather than grave, I reflect on the current use of the cloud in “cloud computing” to discuss the role of the internet and its material infrastructures in shaping earthly possibilities. I imagine the pace and place of awe rather …

Reading Speculative Futures In A Post-Truth World, Rachel Webb Jekanowski Aug 2017

Reading Speculative Futures In A Post-Truth World, Rachel Webb Jekanowski

The Goose

Faced with the threat of a “post-truth” world and a widening chasm of exchange between climate change deniers and environmentalists, I argue that future-orientated literary and media speculative fictions—which I term “speculative futures”—offer a means of building lines of communication across social and political divisions. This thought piece on “The Environmental Humanities in a Post-Truth World” mediates upon the potentiality of speculative futures as theory, social bridge-building, and pedagogical tool. Speculative fictions (especially those that address environmental justice, and anti-colonial and feminist politics) use storytelling and future imaginaries to challenge political falsehoods and imagine more ecological, de-colonized futures.

Global Scenarios Of Urban Density And Its Impacts On Building Energy Use Through 2050, Michail Fragkias Aug 2017

Global Scenarios Of Urban Density And Its Impacts On Building Energy Use Through 2050, Michail Fragkias

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although the scale of impending urbanization is well-acknowledged, we have a limited understanding of how urban forms will change and what their impact will be on building energy use. Using both top-down and bottom-up approaches and scenarios,we examine building energy use for heating and cooling. Globally, the energy use for heating and cooling by the middle of the century will be between 45 and 59 exajoules per year (corresponding to an increase of 7–40% since 2010). Most of this variability is due to the uncertainty in future urban densities of rapidly growing cities in Asia and particularly China. Dense urban …

Local Neighbors As Positives, Regional Neighbors As Negatives: Competing Channels In The Relationship Between Others’ Income, Health, And Happiness, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee, Carol Graham Aug 2017

Local Neighbors As Positives, Regional Neighbors As Negatives: Competing Channels In The Relationship Between Others’ Income, Health, And Happiness, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee, Carol Graham

Economics

That well-being is decreasing in others’ income is termed the “relative income hypothesis” (RIH) by scholars of subjective well-being (SWB) and has substantial empirical support. Some studies, however, present evidence of both positive and negative explanatory channels in the relationship between others’ income and SWB. We develop a theoretical framework integrating four distinct channels through which neighbors’ income can affect utility: public goods, cost of living, expectations of future income, and direct effects (RIH or altruism). We estimate the relationship with SWB data from the U.S. Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index and median-income data from the American Community Survey for ZIP codes …

Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger Aug 2017

Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Dynasties entwine family and fortune. They are organizational longevity outliers. Society offers a conflicting view of dynasties. On one hand, dynasties are associated with conflict, divisiveness, conspicuous consumption, and entitlement. On the other hand, dynastic business families employ people, produce and innovate products and processes, and give to community. Linked to values and enacted by strategic leaders, strategy organizes and mobilizes capital toward goals attainment. The firm-centric perspectives of the strategic management and family business strategy literatures overlook the systematic investigation of family strategy as a means of perpetuation. This grounded theory influenced study explores the components of a family …

Adsorption Of Ammonium (Nh4+) Ions Onto Various Vietnamese Biomass Residue-Derived Biochars (Wood, Rice Husk And Bamboo), Nguyen Van Hien, Eugenia Valsami-Jones, Nguyen Cong Vinh, Tong Thi Phu, Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, Iseult Lynch

BIO-CHAR: Production, Characterization and Applications

This study evaluates adsorption of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) ions onto various biochars produced from biomass residues in Vietnam as a function of their physicochemical characteristics. Three biochars, including wood biochar (WBC), rice husk biochar (RBC), and bamboo biochar (BBC), were produced under limited oxygen conditions using Top-Lid Updraft Drum technology at temperatures of 450-550oC. Physicochemical characterization (BET surface area, Cation exchange capacity (CEC), Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) of the biochars was performed in order to link their porosity and surface functional groups with their NH4+-N capture capacities.

Recommendations For Developing Video Games To Address Depression Among College Students, John Bodycombe Aug 2017

Recommendations For Developing Video Games To Address Depression Among College Students, John Bodycombe

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Depression is a significant problem on college campuses, and the data shows that prevalence is on the rise (The National Survey on Drug Use and Health [NSDUH], 2014; Stewart, Ricci, Chee, Hahn, & Morgenstein, 2003). Depression impacts the well-being of students and puts them at risk for a variety of issues (Leach, 2009; Adams, Wharton, Quilter, & Hirsch, 2008; Serras, Saules, Cranford, & Eisenberg, 2010; Cranford, Eisenberg, & Serras, 2009; Weitzman, 2004). Many students with depression do not receive care (Blanco, Okuda, Wright, Hasin, Grant, Liu, & Olfson, 20008; Eisenburg and Chung, 2012), or receive care that is not minimally …

High-Impact Practices In Anthropology: Creating A Bridge Between Liberal Arts And Neoliberal Values, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Brandon D. Lundy, Cheyenne Dahlmann Aug 2017

High-Impact Practices In Anthropology: Creating A Bridge Between Liberal Arts And Neoliberal Values, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Brandon D. Lundy, Cheyenne Dahlmann

Georgia Journal of Science

Neoliberal values are dramatically affecting higher education in the United States, with a focus on running these institutions as businesses and molding students into productive workers. This shift toward training and away from traditional liberal arts education at U.S. universities and colleges has occurred even as studies demonstrate that the ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving marketplace promotes long-term professional success. While neoliberalism and traditional liberal arts education are often seen as antithetical, we show how one anthropology program has combined these values into pedagogical practice through a select subset of high impact practices to improve academic outcomes for …
