Groundwater Flood Hazards And Mechanisms In Lowland Karst Terrains, Owen Naughton, Ted Mccormack, Laurence Gill
Groundwater Flood Hazards And Mechanisms In Lowland Karst Terrains, Owen Naughton, Ted Mccormack, Laurence Gill
KIP Articles
The spatial and temporal complexities of flooding in karst terrains pose unique challenges in flood risk management. Lowland karst landscapes can be particularly susceptible to groundwater flooding due to a combination of low aquifer storage, high diffusivity and limited or absent surface drainage. Numerous notable groundwater flood events have been recorded in the Republic of Ireland throughout the twentieth century, but flooding during the winters of 2009 and 2015 was the most severe on record, causing widespread and prolonged disruption and damage to property and infrastructure. Effective flood risk management requires an understanding of the recharge, storage and transport mechanisms …
Understanding A Discourse Marker In Quito, Ecuador, Hannah Jesberger
Understanding A Discourse Marker In Quito, Ecuador, Hannah Jesberger
Honors Projects
The present research project examines the possible factors to explain the word-final /f/ in Ecuadorian Spanish including but not limited to: where it is used, who uses it (gender, age ranges, social class), and with which words it is most commonly used. As the first extensive research study on the word-final /f/, the project may lead to other investigations of this phenomenon and other features of Ecuadorian Spanish. In addition, if there are other variations of the marker pues in the Spanish varieties spoken in different regions and/or countries, researchers can use this present study as basis to analyze the …
Hiv In The Heartland: Experiences Of Living With Hiv In Urban And Rural Areas Of The Midwest, Sarah B. Donley, C. Patrice Lockett
Hiv In The Heartland: Experiences Of Living With Hiv In Urban And Rural Areas Of The Midwest, Sarah B. Donley, C. Patrice Lockett
The Qualitative Report
Scholarly research on HIV/AIDS and stigma has largely demonstrated a different experience for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) who inhabit urban and rural areas. Largely missing from this scholarship are experiences in low prevalence areas. Low prevalence areas typically have fewer resources, social networks, and HIV infection and prevalence is less common. In this paper, we examine the challenges PLWHAs in rural and urban areas of the Midwest face and how these individuals manage, respond, and combat HIV/AIDS related stigmas in their communities. This paper utilizes interview data to understand the lived experiences of 18 persons living with …
Super-Diversity As A Methodological Approach: Re-Centering Power And Inequality, Sofya Aptekar
Super-Diversity As A Methodological Approach: Re-Centering Power And Inequality, Sofya Aptekar
Publications and Research
Super-diversity as a methodological lens calls for a study of dynamics of new and diversified social groups that moves away from more traditional approaches focused on ethnicity. In examining the potential of super-diversity as a methodological lens, I identify a risk of downplaying the effect of “old” categories of difference that are likely to continue to shape social structures as well as space. I propose a re-centering of power and inequality in the study of super-diversity by situating its study within an urban culturalist approach, with sociological tools borrowed from ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism. This proposal is illustrated through the …
On Location, K Parker
On Location, K Parker
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Kayla Parker’s film On Location poses questions of radicalism both in terms of audio visual aesthetics and of filmmaking methodology in addition to more overtly political issues of environmental degradation, human and non-human relations and marginalised femininities. Acknowledging that her method of filmmaking is ‘predicated on there being no conscious aim either before or during the making process’, Parker reverse engineers an experimental approach to landscape filmmaking that synthesises phenomenology, écriture feminine, structural materialism and critical geography. The result is a beautiful depiction of the countryside hollow way visited by the British avant-garde filmmaker and performance artist, Annabel Nicolson, forty …

Quantifying The Erosional Response To Tectonic Forcing: Be10 Catchment Average Erosion Rates From The Taupo Rift, New Zealand., Sj Boulton, Kp Norton
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
While it has long been known that denudation is greater in tectonically active areas, few studies have explicitly compared the relationship between uplift rates, catchment average erosion rates and fluvial geomorphic indices (i.e., the normalised steepness index, ksn). Here we present data from the actively extending Taupo Rift (North Island, New Zealand). At the southern end of the Taupo Rift, NE-striking faults primarily delineate the rift margins, uplifting the Kaimanawa Mountains to the east at around 1 mmyr-1 . Geologic mapping and topographic analysis indicates that the Kaimanawa Mountains are a tilted fault block, allowing the extrapolation of the uplift …
Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin
Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin
Student Scholarship
In academic literature, brands have been categorized as either global or local, driven primarily by the distance their businesses reach beyond their national borders. This difference is evaporating with the advent of digital marketing and ecommerce. Academics clearly recognize this changing landscape and have researched the impacts to consumer perceptions and identities, but literature has provided less strategic direction for global and local brand leaders as they compete head-to-head in the fast-paced global marketplace. This qualitative study of fifty executives in the global/local sports product industry reveals distinctly different paths taken by global brands toward local authenticity and local brands …

Transnormativity And The Visual Hierarchies Of Acceptance, Katie Mcbride
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper presents a critical analysis of the subjective, symbolic, and systemic harmsexperienced as hate by transgender individuals. An analysis of the lived experiences oftransgender individuals in this way illustrates how neoliberal discourses create and sustain a hierarchy of acceptable forms of self-identity for transgender individuals that is transnormative. The data presented is drawn from my doctoral research and was obtained using in-depth qualitative interview methods that generated thick descriptions and reflections of the lived experiences of individuals. The research incorporated the use of visual narrative methods that helped to elucidate the role of symbolic and systemic harm in the shaping …

Trajectories Of Change In Mediterranean Holocene Vegetation Through Classification Of Pollen Data, Ralph M. Fyfe, Jessie Woodbridge, C. Neil Roberts
Trajectories Of Change In Mediterranean Holocene Vegetation Through Classification Of Pollen Data, Ralph M. Fyfe, Jessie Woodbridge, C. Neil Roberts
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2017 Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature Quantification of vegetation cover from pollen analysis has been a goal of palynologists since the advent of the method in 1916 by the great Lennart von Post. Pollen-based research projects are becoming increasingly ambitious in scale, and the emergence of spatially extensive open-access datasets, advanced methods and computer power has facilitated sub-continental analysis of Holocene pollen data. This paper presents results of one such study, focussing on the Mediterranean basin. Pollen data from 105 fossil sequences have been extracted from the European Pollen database, harmonised by both taxonomy and chronologies, and …
Translation And Transformation: Uncovering The Source Of Alchemy’S Association With Magic Through A Study Of Its Translation Into Latin In The High Medieval Period, Morgan Taylor Greer
Translation And Transformation: Uncovering The Source Of Alchemy’S Association With Magic Through A Study Of Its Translation Into Latin In The High Medieval Period, Morgan Taylor Greer
University Honors Theses
Alchemy is one of the longest lived ideas and practices in intellectual history and one of the most habitually misunderstood. Until the 1950's historians of science considered alchemy to be pseudoscience or a facet of magic. Since then historians of alchemy have produced a considerable body of work that is mostly concerned with making corrections and establishing the scientific character of alchemy. Alchemists made significant contributions to chemistry, theology, and medicine. Alchemy itself influenced art, literature, and pop culture. The current literature on alchemy lacks one component, a study of the source of alchemy’s association with magic and relegation to …

The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia
The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia
Open Access Dissertations
The rapid increase in the use of social media during the “war on drugs” in Mexico, especially in the first decades of the 21st century, has stimulated a growing research agenda in academia. To date, this scholarship has focused primarily on investigating the opportunities social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube offer to civilians as organizing mechanisms, to fill the informational vacuum left by the tightly selfcensured mainstream media outlets, and as a tool for survival. Yet, in Mexico, the use of these platforms has taken a darker, more sinister turn. Research exploring the use of social media …

Factors Influencing The Level Of Technology Adaptation By Middle-School Teachers, Janice Favre Strigh
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine those factors influencing a teacher’s level of adaptation to a one-to-one laptop program in a middle-school setting. The school chosen for this study is located in a semi-rural district with approximately 500 students in sixth through eighth grade. Over the past 10 years, the school district has implemented a one-to-one laptop program with students currently having access to their own personal computer each day. Collins’s (2007) technology, leadership management, and policy pyramid model provided a framework for this analysis. Teachers’ perceptions of leadership support for the planning activities, organizational integration …
"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson
"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
During the nineteenth century, Americans began to develop a new relationship with death. Urbanites were less confronted with the constant presence of the dead and dying than they had in the past. A new trend in cemeteries also developed as a result. The Rural Cemetery Movement promoted the idea that the dead should be buried amongst a natural setting that was pleasing and calming to visitors. The first few initial cemeteries were an immediate success, but this was not the case in Richmond, Virginia. Although the developers had grand ideas about their cemetery project, Richmonders opposed the cemetery in the …

"Deep" South: Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, And Environmental Knowledge, 1800-1974, Alyssa Diane Warrick
Theses and Dissertations
Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest known cave in the world. This dissertation examines the history of how scientists and non-scientists alike contributed to a growing body of knowledge about Mammoth Cave and how that knowledge in turn affected land use decisions in the surrounding neighborhood. During the nineteenth century visitors traveled through Mammoth Cave along with their guides, gaining knowledge of the cave by using their senses and spreading that knowledge through travel narratives. After the Civil War, cave guides, now free men who chose to stay in the neighborhood, used the cave as a way to build …

Ecology And Conservation Of Bird Assemblages In Native And Afforested Environments In The Northern Campos Grasslands Of Uruguay, Juan Andrés Martínez Lanfranco
Theses and Dissertations
Commercial forestry has expanded across the Rio de la Plata Grasslands (RPG) of South America in recent decades. I conducted a resource-use based study on bird communities during the 2013-2014 austral breeding season in northern Uruguay. I assessed relationships between habitat types and bird abundance as a function of vegetation structure. To compare avian responses to treatments, I included native environments, pine and eucalyptus plantations of different ages and thinning regimes. I detected differences in species richness and composition and species-specific responses in abundance along structural gradients sampled. Although poorer in species than native habitat types, tree plantations were extensively …
Effecting Organizational Change At The Macro Level Of Professions, Robert Anthony Green
Effecting Organizational Change At The Macro Level Of Professions, Robert Anthony Green
Theses and Dissertations
Much has been written in academic and popular publications about organizational change. Topics have ranged from case studies to anecdotal stories of how leaders can change an organization. There is little written on changing the culture and vision of a profession at the macro level. This dissertation shows that one key to effecting change within a profession is to educate those at the entrant level and thereby effect change with the profession. Over time, these new entrants to the profession will rise to senior positions and be able to effect greater change through the hiring, training, and mentoring processes inherent …
Transcriptome-Wide Prevalence Of Selection Among Wild Populations Of Helianthus Annuus (Common Sunflower), Michael Emmett Kartje
Transcriptome-Wide Prevalence Of Selection Among Wild Populations Of Helianthus Annuus (Common Sunflower), Michael Emmett Kartje
Theses and Dissertations
In the present study, I used transcriptomic data to elucidate the role of selection in maintaining genetic cohesion and promoting divergence among wild populations of the annual sunflower Helianthus annuus. I observed that nearly half of the loci displaying high levels of population structure (44%) show allele frequency spectrum skew consistent with recent exposure to natural selection. Among transcriptomic regions at which allele frequency divergence is lowest, fewer loci maintain strong signals of selection (34%). Additionally, I find evidence supporting the maintenance of evolutionarily complex haplotype structure within populations at loci showing high levels of among-population allele frequency divergence.
Use Of Formative Research To Develop A Healthy Eating Social Marketing Campaign For Low Resource Families In Mississippi, Rahel Mathews
Use Of Formative Research To Develop A Healthy Eating Social Marketing Campaign For Low Resource Families In Mississippi, Rahel Mathews
Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi leads the nation in chronic disease, obesity, poverty, and food insecurity. Preventing further growth in disease rates, requires a cultural shift towards a ‘healthy eating’ environment. Healthy patterns of food consumption along with physical activity can prevent and reduce these rates. A state-wide ‘healthy eating’ social marketing campaign could motivate voluntary population behavioral change. Three different methodologies were used to develop a strategy for Mississippi: a systematic review of the literature, a state-wide phone survey (quantitative), and focus groups (qualitative). A systematic review of articles published since January 2007 was conducted, using PRISMA guidelines. Five databases were searched with …
Factors Influencing The Use Of Consulting Foresters By Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners In Mississippi, Sagar Godar Chhetri
Factors Influencing The Use Of Consulting Foresters By Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners In Mississippi, Sagar Godar Chhetri
Theses and Dissertations
This study describes landowners’ willingness to hire consulting foresters and compares forest management expenses between the 1990s (1995-1997) and 2015. Two thousand and ten Mississippi non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners were selected randomly from a tax roll mail list maintained by Mississippi State University. Participants were surveyed to identify the characteristics of those landowners willing to hire consultants and compared the landowners’ participation in forestry-related activities during the 1990s and 2015. Results indicated three fourth of the survey participants were not willing to use a consultant to manage their forest land. However, consultant fees have increased from the 1990s to …
