National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Through the lens of the Health Belief Model and Protection Motivation Theory, we analyzed interviews of 36 agricultural advisors in Indiana and Nebraska to understand their appraisals of climate change risk, related decision making processes and subsequent risk management advice to producers. Most advisors interviewed accept that weather events are a risk for US Midwestern agriculture; however, they are more concerned about tangible threats such as crop prices. There is not much concern about climate change among agricultural advisors. Management practices that could help producers adapt to climate change were more likely to be recommended by conservation and Extension advisors, …
Posthumanism, Animism, And Sérgio Medeiros’S Pluriverse Poetics, Malcolm Mcnee
Posthumanism, Animism, And Sérgio Medeiros’S Pluriverse Poetics, Malcolm Mcnee
Spanish and Portuguese: Faculty Publications
The works of Sérgio Medeiros are populated by a multitude of beings of diverse and often shifting orders and species. Drawing upon intersecting conceptual orientations of animal and multispecies studies, posthumanism, and ecocriticism, I survey a range of interspecies encounters and worldings in Medeiros’s writing, especially his collection of poems, O choro da aranha, etc.(2013). As Medeiros pointedly draws inspiration from diverse aesthetic and philosophical traditions—from Amerindian cosmogonies and verbal arts to Japanese Zen poetry and various strains of modernist avantgardism—I trace here as a unifying feature his engagement with animist imaginings and a post- or anti-anthropocentric unsettling of …
Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck
Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
The opening lines of Yanick Lahens’s Bain de lune (2014) find an unidentified narrator lying on a beach not far from the coastal community of Anse Bleue, staring at the worn, muddy boots of the man who has just discovered her lifeless body. As her narrative reveals, a hurricane has devastated the region over the past three days, and, in the wake of the storm, the deceased protagonist tries to piece together the fragmented memories of her life as a means of determining how she has ended up dead on the sand. From the very beginning of Lahens’s novel, however, …

Water-limited ecosystems encompass approximately 40% of terrestrial land mass and play a critical role in modulating Earth’s climate and provisioning ecosystem services to humanity. Spaceborne remote sensing is a critical tool for characterizing ecohydrologic patterns and advancing the understanding of the interactions between atmospheric forcings and ecohydrologic responses. Fine to medium scale spatial and temporal resolutions are needed to capture the spatial heterogeneity and the temporally intermittent response of these ecosystems to environmental forcings. Techniques combining complementary remote sensing datasets have been developed, but the heterogeneous nature of these regions present significant challenges. Here we investigate the capacity of one …

Japanese Business Culture: A Study On Foreigner Integration And Social Inclusion, Sarah Franklin
Japanese Business Culture: A Study On Foreigner Integration And Social Inclusion, Sarah Franklin
Honors Theses
With the lack of research and awareness about foreigner integration in the Japanese business working environment, this thesis delves into the underlying factors that influence the perceptions of foreigner integration and social inclusion. Key topics include the history of Japanese business culture, the major differences between American and Japanese business culture, the psychological implications of culture shock on integration, the possibility of ‘below surface’ foreigner integration in the working environment, and the recommended actions by foreigners for better social acceptance and adaptation to the culture. Through observations and interviews, it was discovered that ‘below surface’ integration is possible. However, it …

2017 Point-In-Time: Count Of Homelessness In Portland/Gresham/Multnomah County, Oregon, Uma Krishnan, Deborah Elliott
Publications, Reports and Presentations
The 2017 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of Homelessness provides a snapshot of people who were experiencing homelessness on the night of Wednesday, February 22, 2017, in Portland, Gresham, and Multnomah County, Oregon. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires communities to count people living in emergency shelters, transitional housing or places not meant for human habitation (these people are collectively known as “HUD homeless”) on a single night (a “point in time”) at least once every two years. This enumeration is one way of understanding the levels and trends in unmet need for shelter and permanent housing within …

Increasing Stem Competence In Urban, High Poverty Elementary School Populations, Sueanne Mckinney, Cynthia Tomovic, Melva Grant, Kaavonia Hinton
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Enhancing STEM competence (e.g., interests, knowledge, skills, and dispositions) among urban, high poverty, elementary school populations in the United States (U.S.) is and remains a growing national concern, especially since Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competence is and will continue to be a necessary requisite for gainful employment in the future, according to workforce development experts. In an attempt to address this gap, many urban elementary schools have begun to offer STEM-related programs to increase STEM learning at an early age. STEM competence (interest, knowledge, skills, and dispositions), however, remains low. This paper results in a matrix used to …

An Exploration Of Practical Means By Which Post-Secondary Achievement Can Be Elevated For Low-Socioeconomic Black Males, Dwayne J. L. Crutchley
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that contribute to the postsecondary achievement gap between low-socioeconomic income Black males (LBM) and White males. The two principal factors that emerge from the literature are categorize by this author as internal and external barriers LBM’ encounter. Internal barriers are those encountered in school, identified as 1) the curriculum, 2) the teacher and 3) the role guidance counselors play. External barriers those encountered outside of school are identified in 1) low-income families, 2) community and 3) deficit perceptions. There is sufficient documentation about the factors associated with LBM’ postsecondary underachievement. …

General Theory Of Law And Development, Yong-Shik Lee
General Theory Of Law And Development, Yong-Shik Lee
Cornell International Law Journal
Although scholarship in law and development that explores the relationship between law and social and economic progress has evolved over the last four decades, this area of inquiry remains unfamiliar to many legal scholars, lawyers, and policy makers. Scholars have not yet been able to develop a theory that systematically explains the interrelationship between law and development, which would establish law and development as a robust and coherent academic field. This Article attempts to fill this gap by presenting a general theory that defines the disciplinary parameters of law and development, and explains the mechanisms by which law impacts development. …

Breaking Down Bias: Legal Mandates Vs. Corporate Interests, Jamillah Bowman Williams
Breaking Down Bias: Legal Mandates Vs. Corporate Interests, Jamillah Bowman Williams
Washington Law Review
Bias and discrimination continue to limit opportunities and outcomes for racial minorities in American institutions in the twenty-first century. The diversity rationale, touting the broad benefits of inclusion, has become widely accepted by corporate employers, courts, and universities. At the same time, many view a focus on antidiscrimination law and the threat of legal enforcement as outmoded and ineffective. Thus, many organizations talk less in terms of the mandates of laws such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, or a “legal case,” and more in terms of a “business case” where benefits of inclusion seem to accrue to everyone. It …
Taking Systemic Risk Seriously In Financial Regulation, Todd Henderson, James C. Spindler
Taking Systemic Risk Seriously In Financial Regulation, Todd Henderson, James C. Spindler
Indiana Law Journal
Bank regulation failed in the run up to the financial crisis of2008, as it has numerous times in the course of U.S. history. This is despite the existence of traditional prudential regulation, such as capital adequacy mandates, reserve requirements, and bank examination, as well as more common legal remedies, such as tort and contract litigation. Unsurprisingly, in the wake of these failures, many reforms have been proposed, and some adopted, to try to reduce bank risk taking. These reforms include limiting bank size, requiring bank managers to be paid differently, restricting investment in high-risk financial products, and, of course, tightening …

Clusters In The Wilderness: Knowledge Spillovers Based On Outdoor Recreation, Jack Marr
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Smaller cities like Boise wishing to reap the benefits of clusters should play to their strengths, and creating an urban ecosystem conductive to high-trust informal social interaction may be one underexplored area of competitive advantage. In my research, I examine how widespread participation in informal, high-trust, non-work activities can lead to increased knowledge spillovers in the formal economy and drive increased and sustainable economic success by looking at outdoor sports interactions between key players in the economy around Boise, Idaho. In this paper, I look at background factors and examine the literature, and provide initial analysis.

A Framework For Evaluating Stay Detection Approaches, Cornelia Schneider, Simon Gröchenig, Verena Venek, Michael Leitner, Siegfried Reich
Faculty Publications
In recent years, sensors of mobile devices are increasingly used in the research field of Active and Assisted Living (AAL), in particular, for movement analysis. Questions, such as where users typically stay (and for how long), where they have been or where they will most likely be going to, are of utmost importance for implementing smart AAL services. Due to the plethora of application scenarios and varying requirements, the challenge is the identification of an appropriate stay detection approach. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive framework covering the entire process from data acquisition, pre-processing, parameterization to evaluation so that it …
