Elementary Title I Teachers Perception Of Stress, Burnout And The Impact On Retention, Kelly Thompson
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of stress due to their job, and if this had an influence on retention. The study concentrated on teacher’s perceptions on stress, teacher retention along with their views on coping strategies to handle or prevent stress. The conceptual framework for this study was the transactional model of stress theory by Lazarus and Folkman, which provided a better understanding of demands in education and the resources provided to teachers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of stress due to their job and if …
Design And Simulation Of A Miniature Cylindrical Mirror Auger Electron Energy Analyzer With Secondary Electron Noise Suppression, Jay A. Bieber
Design And Simulation Of A Miniature Cylindrical Mirror Auger Electron Energy Analyzer With Secondary Electron Noise Suppression, Jay A. Bieber
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the nanoscale metrology industry, there is a need for low-cost instruments, which have the ability to probe the structrure and elemental composition of thin films. This dissertation, describes the research performed to design and simulate a miniature Cylindrical Mirror Analyzer, (CMA), and Auger Electron Spectrometer, (AES). The CMA includes an integrated coaxial thermionic electron source. Electron optics simulations were performed using the Finite Element Method, (FEM), software COMSOL. To address the large Secondary Electron, (SE), noise, inherent in AES spectra, this research also included experiments to create structures in materials, which were intended to suppress SE backgound noise in …

Bound To The Fire, Kelley Fanto Deetz
Bound To The Fire, Kelley Fanto Deetz
Civil Rights
For decades, smiling images of "Aunt Jemima" and other historical and fictional black cooks could be found on various food products and in advertising. Although these images were sanitized and romanticized in American popular culture, they represented the untold stories of enslaved men and women who had a significant impact on the nation's culinary and hospitality traditions, even as they were forced to prepare food for their oppressors.
Kelley Fanto Deetz draws upon archaeological evidence, cookbooks, plantation records, and folklore to present a nuanced study of the lives of enslaved plantation cooks from colonial times through emancipation and beyond. She …

We characterize the nonlinear optical properties of GeSbS chalcogenide glasses with fiber-based experiments. A waveguide nonlinear parameter of 7 W-1/m and nonlinear refractive index of 3.71 x 10-18 m2/W are estimated by self-phase modulation. A GeSbS waveguide could also generate a supercontinuum from 1280 to 2120 nm at the -30 dB level for maximum coupled power of 340 W, showing a 14-fold spectral broadening of the input spectrum explained by cascaded stimulated Raman scattering.

Paving The Path For Sex Education: An Analysis Of Journey Metaphors In Political Rhetoric, Tara Mcqueen
Paving The Path For Sex Education: An Analysis Of Journey Metaphors In Political Rhetoric, Tara Mcqueen
University Honors Theses
This paper analyzes four key political texts regarding access to comprehensive and abstinence-only sex education in the United States, beginning in 1919 and culminating in 2016. The aim being to draw attention to the relationship between political rhetoric on sex education and the metaphorical language that is utilized to discuss the matter. Presented here is the argument that discourse on sex education revolves around journey metaphors and most often reflect the underlying conceptual metaphors that LIFE IS A JOURNEY and/or POLITICS IS A JOURNEY. This framing of the debate began in 1919 when a pamphlet distributed by the United States' …

Sleep And Alzheimer’S Disease: A Critical Examination Of The Risk That Sleep Problems Or Disorders Particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea Pose Towards Developing Alzheimer’S Disease, Omonigho A. Michael Bubu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a critical examination of the relationship between sleep problems and/or disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Alzheimer Disease (AD). First, I conducted an exhaustive systematic review of existing literature, and identified gaps in research that led to specific research aims. For the first aim, I conducted the first ever-published meta-analysis examining sleep, cognitive decline and AD, providing an aggregate effect of sleep on AD. Second, focusing on OSA, I conducted a study examining OSA’s effect on longitudinal changes on AD biomarkers in cognitive normal, MCI and AD subjects, using data from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative …
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Spirit of Friendship: Girlfriends in Contemporary African American Literature examines spiritual subjectivities that inspire girlfriends in three contemporary novels to journey towards actualization. It examines the girlfriend bond as a space where the Divine Spirit can flourish and assist girlfriends as they seek to become actualized. This project raises epistemological questions as it suggests that within the girlfriend dynamic, knowledge that is traditionally subjugated is formed and refined. Finally, girlfriend epistemology is considered in light of Black Girl Magic, a contemporary social and cultural movement among Black women.
From The Ground Up: The Intersection Of Environment And Industry In Portland, Oregon, Madelyn Miller
From The Ground Up: The Intersection Of Environment And Industry In Portland, Oregon, Madelyn Miller
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between industrial development and park creation during the first half of the twentieth century in Portland, Oregon. Beginning with an examination of early planning efforts of John Charles Olmsted alongside the economic boost brought by Lewis and Clark Exposition, this thesis traces the converging and diverging political and social efforts that formed Portland’s Forest Park and Guild’s Lake Industrial Sanctuary, using primary documents to identify similarities and differences in how those two spaces came into existence. The creation of Forest Park came out of a reaction to expanding economic and industrial development, initially sparked by …
Design Door, Kate Noelle Kobielsky
Design Door, Kate Noelle Kobielsky
University Honors Theses
Graphic design is all around us -- from our cereal boxes, to the knobs on our ovens, as well as the street signs we use to guide ourselves to work in the morning. Even though it affects all of us in one way or another, not many people realize the importance and magnitude of graphic design.
Because of this lack of understanding, many young creative students who may flourish in a design degree do not receive the support and information they need while still in high school.
Design Door is a campaign aimed towards high school students that encourages self …
L2 Motivation In Japanese Elementary Efl Classrooms: A Review Of The Literature, Cassandra Brown
L2 Motivation In Japanese Elementary Efl Classrooms: A Review Of The Literature, Cassandra Brown
University Honors Theses
In their formal education systems, East Asian nations began to actively incorporate English lessons around the turn of the 21 st century. For Japan, perhaps the most controversial reform was introducing compulsory English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction at the primary school level in 2011. A central policy goal specifies guidelines for encouraging positive affect and long-term motivation toward the language. In this literature review, I discuss empirical studies from within the past five years which explore Japanese elementary EFL students’ motivation and engagement in class. Researchers framed their inquiry within the self-determination theory (SDT) framework, a dominant theory …
Microplastic Concentrations In Crassotrea Gigas: Establishing A Baseline Of Microplastic Contamination In Oregon's Oyster Aquacultures, Mia K. Jauregui
Microplastic Concentrations In Crassotrea Gigas: Establishing A Baseline Of Microplastic Contamination In Oregon's Oyster Aquacultures, Mia K. Jauregui
University Honors Theses
Anthropogenic debris is “found across all habitats in the ocean, including coral reefs, shallow bays, estuaries, the open ocean, and the deep sea” (Rochman et al., 2015). Microplastic pollution is widespread in the marine environment and poses a threat to a variety of organisms, including commercial shellfish grown for human consumption. The aim of this study is to establish a baseline of microplastic evidence in Oregon through the examination of Crassotrea gigas--or the Pacific Oyster. In addition it hopes to determine if there are differences in microplastic concentration geographically and temporally. Five oyster samples were collected in Spring 2017 …
Assessing The Impact Of Land Use And Travel On Carbon Dioxide Emissions In Portland, Oregon, Zakari Mumuni
Assessing The Impact Of Land Use And Travel On Carbon Dioxide Emissions In Portland, Oregon, Zakari Mumuni
Dissertations and Theses
The negative consequences of sprawling metropolitan regions have attracted attention in both academia and in practice regarding how to better design settlements and alter travel behavior in a quest to curtail vehicle emissions. Studies that have attempted to understand the nexus between land use, travel and vehicle emissions have not been able to address the issue of self-selection in a satisfactory manner. Self-selection occurs when households choose their residential location based, in part, on expected travel behavior. This non-random experience makes the use of traditional regression frameworks that strongly rely on random sampling, unsuitable. This replication study's purpose was to …
Minimize: Possessions & Identity, Maggie Denham
Minimize: Possessions & Identity, Maggie Denham
University Honors Theses
A certain interpretation of the minimalist lifestyle is growing in popularity. The author questions the importance of a minimalist mindset in contemporary life, including in their own graphic design process. The author asks the following: how does minimalism and the growing minimalist culture of freedom from possessions impact the relationship between possessions and an individual’s sense of self? This publication design project is an examination of personal habits with possessions and the relationships the author has with them. Minimize is the photographed documentation of things owned with a focus on the things that aren't needed. The newsprint publication design also …
