North–South: Poland And Brazil In Turmoil, Ladislau Dowbor Nov 2017

North–South: Poland And Brazil In Turmoil, Ladislau Dowbor

European Management Studies

Brazil and Poland are the countries presented as having best sailed through the 2008 global crisis. Clearly anti-cyclical policies work: instead of austerity measures, both countries maintained strong public investment, decentralized social policies and vigorous access to credit. More recently, however, our countries are facing the strong winds of financial globalization, with growing restrictions to the capacity of maintaining national economic policies. Comparing two very different countries is certainly challenging, but it does shed light on how the present global economic background affects us all. More recently, the economic and social progress in both countries has been suffering political disruption, …

Assessing The Impact Of The Swarthmore College Libraries Internship: White Paper, Pamela Harris, Sara Powell Nov 2017

Assessing The Impact Of The Swarthmore College Libraries Internship: White Paper, Pamela Harris, Sara Powell

Library Staff Works

The Swarthmore College Libraries Internship began in 2003 as a multi-institutional Andrew W. Mellon Foundation $1.5 million grant to address diversity in the library profession and recruitment at the undergraduate level. Due to the original success of the program, Swarthmore College Libraries have continued to sponsor the internship with student employment funds since 2010. As the Internship approaches its fifteenth anniversary we examine our original goals: to address the shortage of professional librarians due to retirement; to recruit talented undergraduates early in the hiring pipeline and to broaden the racial and ethnic composition of the library profession so that it …

Multilingualism And Multiculturalism: Opinions From Spanish-Speaking English Learners From Mexico, Central America, And South America, Cailey Catherine Moe Nov 2017

Multilingualism And Multiculturalism: Opinions From Spanish-Speaking English Learners From Mexico, Central America, And South America, Cailey Catherine Moe

Dissertations and Theses

Within the population of adult English-language learners in the United States, the largest portion is comprised of Spanish speakers from Mexico and Central and South America. At the same time, Spanish is the second-most commonly spoken language in the U.S., and an increasing presence in U.S. media and culture. This puts English learners from this demographic in a unique position with respect to language and culture acquisition and the experience of working towards their goals within U.S. society at large.

The purpose of this study is to explore motivations and beliefs about language and culture held by a small number …

Transcriptomic Regulation Of Alternative Phenotypic Trajectories In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Amie L. Romney Nov 2017

Transcriptomic Regulation Of Alternative Phenotypic Trajectories In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Amie L. Romney

Dissertations and Theses

The Annual Killifish, Austrofundulus limnaeus, survives the seasonal drying of their pond habitat in the form of embryos entering diapause midway through development. The diapause trajectory is one of two developmental phenotypes. Alternatively, individuals can "escape" entry into diapause and develop continuously until hatching. The alternative phenotypes of A. limnaeus are a form of developmental plasticity that provides this species with a physiological adaption for surviving stressful environments. The developmental trajectory of an embryo is not distinguishable morphologically upon fertilization and phenotype is believed to be influenced by maternal provisioning within the egg based on observations of offspring phenotype …

Extending Motion Detection To Track Stopped Objects In Visual Multi-Target Tracking, Jacob H. White, Karl T. Salva, Randal W. Beard Nov 2017

Extending Motion Detection To Track Stopped Objects In Visual Multi-Target Tracking, Jacob H. White, Karl T. Salva, Randal W. Beard

Student Works

Various solutions to visual multi-target tracking have been proposed, but many of them are not capable of running in real time from a moving camera on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We present a tracker that runs in real time and tracks multiple objects while accounting for camera motion on a UAV. Our algorithm is capable of processing over 10 frames per second on a 1280x720 video sequence.

We utilize Recursive-RANSAC, an efficient algorithm for tracking multiple objects in clutter. Our work combines motion detection with optical flow and feature matching to allow stationary objects to be tracked. We use …

This paper deals with the evolution of entrepreneurship and economic development in Brazil over the last decades. It shows the importance of the services sector in the creation of jobs for the growing Brazilian population, stressing also the factors at work for the slowdown in progress of the nation’s overall productivity in modern times. Some proposals to overcome this lacklustre performance of the Brazilian economy are contemplated in the end.

Hydrogen-Bonding-Directed Ordered Assembly Of Carboxylated Poly(3-Alkylthiophene)S, David W. Bilger, Jose A. Figueroa, Neil D. Redeker, Amrita Sarkar, Morgan Stefik, Shanjuu Zhang Nov 2017

Hydrogen-Bonding-Directed Ordered Assembly Of Carboxylated Poly(3-Alkylthiophene)S, David W. Bilger, Jose A. Figueroa, Neil D. Redeker, Amrita Sarkar, Morgan Stefik, Shanjuu Zhang

Faculty Publications

Hydrogen-bonding-induced ordered assembly of poly(3-alkylthiophene)s derivatives bearing carboxylic acid groups has been investigated from diluted and concentrated solutions to solid films using ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and four-point probe conductivity measurements. In dilute solutions, the polymer undergoes a spontaneous structural transition from disordered coil-like to ordered rodlike conformations, which is evidenced by time-dependent chromism. Many factors such as alkyl-chain length, types of solvents, and temperature are studied to understand the assembly behavior. Transition kinetics of the assembly process reveals a universal second-order rate law, indicating an intermolecular origin due to hydrogen bonding. When more concentrated, hydrogen bonding drives …

Relational Struggles And Experiential Immediacy In Religious American Families, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kaity Pearl Young Nov 2017

Relational Struggles And Experiential Immediacy In Religious American Families, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kaity Pearl Young

Faculty Publications

Qualitative family scholar Kerry Daly has called for more theory addressing understudied dimensions including religion, everyday experiences, and time. Herein we address all three of these dimensions as we empirically examine and theorize Ono relational struggles among religious families. We also explore what we term experiential immediacy–defined as the personal and temporal proximity to participant-reported lived experience. Based on qualitative analyses of in-depth interviews with 198 highly religious families (N = 476 individuals), we identified four types of relational struggles created by religious involvement: burdens, disunities, abuses, and offenses. We also offer a conceptual framework of experiential immediacy grounded …

Biomechanics (Chapter 9), Nicholas Stergiou, K.-C. Siu, Sara Myers, Ben Senderling

Journal Articles

Biomechanics is a discipline. A discipline deals with understanding, predicting, and explaining phenomena within a content domain, and biomechanics is the study of the human body in motion. Kinesiology, the parent discipline of biomechanics, is a science that investigates movement. Biomechanical research in human development focuses on evaluating essential movement patterns across the human life span. Biomechanical analysis is specifically important in quantifying the developmental motor skills and movement patterns such as walking, kicking, jumping, throwing, and catching. Biomechanical research also involves studying the movement patterns of injured and disabled people. Forensic biomechanists are invited to analyze evidence, clarify some …

“2889” Vs. “2890”, Arthur B. Evans Nov 2017

“2889” Vs. “2890”, Arthur B. Evans

Global Language Studies Faculty publications

Abstract

This article offers a detailed comparison of Michel Verne’s 1889 short story “In the Year 2889” and Jules Verne’s 1891 recycled version of the same story, now called « La Journée d’un journaliste américain en 2890 » [The Day of an American Journalist in 2890]. In my analysis, I have also pointed out some of the alterations Michel made to his father’s version when later editing it for inclusion in the posthumous 1910 edition of Verne’s Hier et demain [Yesterday and Tomorrow], now retitled « Au XXIXe siècle : La Journée d’un journaliste américain en 2889 » [In the …

Multi-Target Extension For Beacon Foraging Methods, Christopher Sanford, Ziong Jiao, Jae Oh Nov 2017

Multi-Target Extension For Beacon Foraging Methods, Christopher Sanford, Ziong Jiao, Jae Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Robotic foraging is a complex problem that encompasses both the problem of exploring an area and retrieval of targets. To solve this, biologically inspired algorithms have been proposed that handle the scenario when only one target exists, but requires extension to multiple targets. In both scenarios there exists problems of robot allocation and congestion, and we analyze ways of optimizing both allocation and minimizing congestion for our algorithms. We demonstrate the results through parameterized metrics and compare the improvements in each scenario.

This is a technical report on artificial intelligence, 2017, written by Sanford, Jiao, and Oh.

The Role Of Non-Profit Organizations In Shaping Food Law And Corporate Responsibility In The United States, Melissa M. Card

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article assesses whether the United States should adopt an institutional process similar to Europe’s through giving non-profit organizations a role in shaping food law and corporate responsibility. Part I provides a comparative analysis of genetically engineered product regulations in the US and the EU. Part II explains how the institutional processes of the US and the EU led to the varying regulations. Part III asserts that the United States should change its institutional process through allowing public universities and private colleges to influence food law and corporate responsibility.
