Assertion And Its Many Norms, John N. Williams Dec 2017

Assertion And Its Many Norms, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Timothy Williamson offers the ordinary practice, the lottery and the Moorean argument for the ‘knowledge account’ that assertion is the only speech-act that is governed by the single ‘knowledge rule’ or norm, that one must know its content. I show that the emptiness of the knowledge account renders mysterious why breaking the knowledge rule should be a source of criticism. I then argue that focussing exclusively on the sincerity of the speech-act of letting one know engenders a category mistake about the nature of constraints on assertion. For Williamson and those in his tradition, assertion alls under purely epistemic norms. …

Big Data In Social And Psychological Science: Theoretical And Methodological Issues, Lin Qiu, Sarah Hian May Chan, David Chan Dec 2017

Big Data In Social And Psychological Science: Theoretical And Methodological Issues, Lin Qiu, Sarah Hian May Chan, David Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Big data presents unprecedented opportunities to understand human behavior on a large scale. It has been increasingly used in social and psychological research to reveal individual differences and group dynamics. There are a few theoretical and methodological challenges in big data research that require attention. In this paper, we highlight four issues, namely data-driven versus theory-driven approaches, measurement validity, multi-level longitudinal analysis, and data integration. They represent common problems that social scientists often face in using big data. We present examples of these problems and propose possible solutions.

Is Agent-Neutral Deontology Possible?, Matthew Hammerton Dec 2017

Is Agent-Neutral Deontology Possible?, Matthew Hammerton

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

It is commonly held that all deontological moral theories are agent-relative in the sense that they give each agent a special concern that she does not perform acts of a certain type rather than a general concern with the actions of all agents. Recently, Tom Dougherty has challenged this orthodoxy by arguing that agent-neutral deontology is possible. In this article I counter Dougherty's arguments and show that agent-neutral deontology is not possible.

Uncertain Skies: Forecasting Typhoons In Hong Kong Ca. 1874-1906, Fiona Williamson Dec 2017

Uncertain Skies: Forecasting Typhoons In Hong Kong Ca. 1874-1906, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper explores the conceptualisation of «uncertainty» in late nineteenth- century meteorological thought. By investigating the story of meteorological forecasting in nineteenth and early twentieth century Hong Kong, it considers the changing ways in which forecasting was judged historically. In the early nineteenth century forecasting the weather was considered impossible. By the end of the century, it was confidently expected that the much improved understanding of weather patterns would lead to the ability to better predict them. During the intervening period «uncertainty» competed with «certainty» and «prediction» was mistaken for «predictability». The shift in perception was driven by various factors, …

The Role Of Historians In East Asia’S History Problem, Hiro Saito Dec 2017

The Role Of Historians In East Asia’S History Problem, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

At first glance, historians may not look like the best candidates for facilitating a resolution of the history problem. This is because historians have traditionally used the nation as a primary unit of analysis, helping to naturalize it as a primordial entity. They have also created professional associations and delimited their membership along national borders, consistent with the nationalist logic of self-determination; for example, when Japanese historians write about the history of Japan, they often talk among themselves without consulting with foreign historians who study Japan. This nationally bounded content focus and membership reinforces the logic of nationalism that divides …

Harnessing The Potential Of The Indonesian Diaspora, Charlotte Setijadi Dec 2017

Harnessing The Potential Of The Indonesian Diaspora, Charlotte Setijadi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this article, I examine recent issues and developments in Indonesian diaspora activism, including the progress of long-standing requests such as changes to the dual citizenship law. I then discuss some of the ways in which the Indonesian government may harness the potential of its diaspora in the future, especially since overseas Indonesians are now wealthier, more mobile, and better connected than ever before. I argue that the case study of the Indonesian state’s growing relationship with its diaspora can enrich our understanding of how Southeast Asian countries are cultivating better and more beneficial relationships with their diaspora communities.

Cultivating Power: Gardens In The Global Politics Of Diplomacy, War, And Peace, William A. Callahan Dec 2017

Cultivating Power: Gardens In The Global Politics Of Diplomacy, War, And Peace, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although gardens are typically appreciated as peaceful spaces of apolitical serenity, this article highlights how gardens can provide new sites and sensibilities that complicate our understanding of diplomacy, war, and peace. While gardens are a popular location for diplomatic performances—for example, the Treaty of Versailles—the global politics of gardens remains underresearched in international relations (IR). To address this gap, the article follows the “aesthetic turn” in IR to examine gardens as contingent social constructions of social-ordering and world-ordering, which both shape and participate in global politics. In particular, it develops a framework to examine how peace-war becomes intelligible in gardens …

Understanding Community And Ecophysiology Of Plant Species On The Colorado Plateau, Hannah Elizabeth Yokum Dec 2017

Understanding Community And Ecophysiology Of Plant Species On The Colorado Plateau, Hannah Elizabeth Yokum

Theses and Dissertations

The intensification of aridity due to anthropogenic climate change is likely to have a large impact on the growth and survival of plant species in the southwestern U.S. where species are already vulnerable to high temperatures and limited precipitation. Global climate change impacts plants through a rising temperature effect, CO2 effect, and land management. In order to forecast the impacts of global climate change, it is necessary to know the current conditions and create a baseline for future comparisons and to understand the factors and players that will affect what happens in the future. The objective of Chapter 1 is …

Eigenblades: Application Of Computer Vision And Machine Learning For Mode Shape Identification, Alex W. La Dec 2017

Eigenblades: Application Of Computer Vision And Machine Learning For Mode Shape Identification, Alex W. La

Theses and Dissertations

On August 27, 2016, Southwest Airlines flight 3472 from New Orleans to Orlando had to perform an emergency landing when a fan blade separated from the engine hub and destroyed the cowling and punctured the fuselage. Initial findings from the metallurgical examination conducted in the National Transpiration Safety Board Materials Laboratory found that the fracture surface of the missing blade showed curving crack arrest lines consistent with fatigue crack growth. Fatigue is often cause by resonate vibrations. Modal analysis is a method that can model the natural frequencies and bending modes of turbomachinery blades. When performing modal analysis with finite …

Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan Dec 2017

Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An increased understanding of the shockwave interaction with a cylindrical structure is the foundation for developing a method to explosively seal a pipe similar to the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Shockwave interactions with a cylindrical structure have been a reoccurring focus of energetics research. Some of the most notable contributions of non-destructive tests are described in ``The Effects of Nuclear Weapons'' (Glasstone, 1962). The work presented by Glasstone examines shockwave interaction from a 20-megaton bomb with a cylindrical structure. However, the data is limited to a peak overpressure of less than 25 psi, requiring several miles …

An Innovative Fuzzy Backstepping Sliding Mode Controller For A Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Shiqian Wang, Jingjuan Zhang, Qian Zhang, Chaoying Pei Dec 2017

An Innovative Fuzzy Backstepping Sliding Mode Controller For A Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Shiqian Wang, Jingjuan Zhang, Qian Zhang, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamical model of a Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is presented in this paper. The Tri-Rotor has three rotors with two fixed-pitch propellers and a tiltable propeller to control the yaw displacement. The model is obtained via the Newton–Euler approach and a nonlinear control strategy called fuzzy backstepping sliding mode control is proposed for the attitude stabilization and altitude tracking of the vehicle. The designed controller consists of a backstepping sliding mode controller and a fuzzy logic controller. For the problem of determining the backstepping sliding mode control coefficients, an optimization method of gradient descent algorithm has been used. …

Nanograin Size Effects On The Strength Of Biphase Nanolayered Composites, Sixie Huang, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou Dec 2017

Nanograin Size Effects On The Strength Of Biphase Nanolayered Composites, Sixie Huang, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we employ atomic-scale simulations to uncover the interface-driven deformation mechanisms in biphase nanolayered composites. Two internal boundaries persist in these materials, the interlayer crystalline boundaries and intralayer biphase interfaces, and both have nanoscale dimensions. These internal surfaces are known to control the activation and motion of dislocations, and despite the fact that most of these materials bear both types of interfaces. From our calculations, we find that the first defect event, signifying yield, is controlled by the intralayer spacing (grain size, d), and not the intralayer biphase spacing (layer thickness, h). The interplay of two internal sizes …

Hattiesburg’S Unforeseen Legacies: Industrial Remnants And Their Influence On Historic Districts, Courtney E. Grinnell

Honors Theses

Contaminated property is a significant limiting factor to urban development, specifically in the old economic centers of cities. This study is a spatial analysis of contaminated property in the Downtown district of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Historic archives are used to create a land-use history of various sites that are presented as case studies in the thesis. These sites provide a unique historical perspective of Hattiesburg’s industrial development while also illustrating the general trends of brownfields in the city. Using a combination of archival information and publicly available spatial data, a series of maps are created that display the source of financial …

The Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Project. Iii. A Lack Of Growth Among Massive Galaxies, Kevin Bundy, Alexie Leauthaud, Shun Saito, Claudia Maraston, David A. Wake, Daniel Thomas Dec 2017

The Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Project. Iii. A Lack Of Growth Among Massive Galaxies, Kevin Bundy, Alexie Leauthaud, Shun Saito, Claudia Maraston, David A. Wake, Daniel Thomas

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The average stellar mass (M*) of high-mass galaxies (log M*/M⊙ > 11.5) is expected to grow by ∼30% since z ~ 1, largely through ongoing mergers that are also invoked to explain the observed increase in galaxy sizes. Direct evidence for the corresponding growth in stellar mass has been elusive, however, in part because the volumes sampled by previous redshift surveys have been too small to yield reliable statistics. In this work, we make use of the Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog (S82-MGC) to build a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies log M*/M⊙ …

Hospital Medicine

This expert guidance document was developed as a resource to provide healthcare epidemiologists working in acute-care hospitals with a high-level overview of incident management for infectious diseases outbreaks and to prepare them to work within an emergency response framework. It addresses how the epidemiologist’s skills and expertise apply to scenarios that require enhanced preparedness and response efforts, eg, when pathogens associated with outbreaks are poorly characterized or when outbreaks require additional interventions including, but not limited to, healthcare personnel education, enhanced infection prevention and control measures, added staffing, supplies, and resources, adjustments to clinical and support activities, and external communications. …

Receiver Function Imaging Of Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Tanzania Craton And Adjacent Segments Of The East African Rift System, Muchen Sun, Kelly H. Liu, Xiaofei Fu, Stephen S. Gao Dec 2017

Receiver Function Imaging Of Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Tanzania Craton And Adjacent Segments Of The East African Rift System, Muchen Sun, Kelly H. Liu, Xiaofei Fu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities beneath the Tanzania Craton and the Eastern and Western Branches of the East African Rift System are imaged by stacking over 7,100 receiver functions. The mean thickness of the MTZ beneath the Western Branch and Tanzania Craton is about 252 km, which is comparable to the global average and is inconsistent with the existence of present-day thermal upwelling originating from the lower mantle. In contrast, beneath the Eastern Branch, an up to 30 km thinning of the MTZ is observed and is attributable to upwelling of higher temperature materials from either the upper MTZ …

The 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) beneath Alaska and adjacent areas are imaged by stacking 75,296 radial receiver functions recorded by 438 broadband seismic stations with up to 30 years of recording period. When the 1-D IASP91 Earth model is used for moveout correction and time depth conversion, significant and spatially systematic variations in the apparent depths of the d410 and d660 are observed. The mean apparent depth of the d410 and d660 for the entire study area is 417 ± 12 km and 665 ± 12 km, respectively, and the mean mantle transition zone (MTZ) …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And High School Students' Perceived Level Of Satisfaction Of Needs In Selected Southeast Tennessee Schools, Michael Caraccio Dec 2017

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And High School Students' Perceived Level Of Satisfaction Of Needs In Selected Southeast Tennessee Schools, Michael Caraccio

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

“Lack of motivation is a real and pressing problem. Upwards of 40 percent of high school students are chronically disengaged from school” (Crotty, 2013, para. 3). This problem highlights the purpose of this research, which was twofold. First, the research was designed to develop an assessment to measure students’ level of needs satisfaction using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Secondly, the assessment instrument was used to investigate the relationship between the level of satisfaction of needs and the academic achievement of high school students. The theoretical basis for this research was Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which was classified as an aspect …

A Study Of The Relationship Between A College Success Course And Student Perception Of The Self-Regulatory Skills Of Concentration, Motivation, And Time Management, Michael George Breakey

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The population of higher education in America consists of nearly 20 million students enrolled in more than 4,000 colleges across the country. College enrollment in America is large and continues to grow rapidly. According to The National Center for Education Statistics (2013), 22.4 million students will be enrolled in degree granting schools by 2019 as compared to 19.1 million in 2008. While college enrollment continues to grow, graduation rates lag. According to the US Department of Education (2009), only 20% of students who start at a two-year institution graduate within three years and about 40% of four-year students graduate in …

Childhood Animal Cruelty Motives And Their Relationship To Recurrent Adult Interpersonal Crimes, Joseph Ketron Dec 2017

Childhood Animal Cruelty Motives And Their Relationship To Recurrent Adult Interpersonal Crimes, Joseph Ketron

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Although research investigating the link between childhood animal cruelty and adult interpersonal violence dates back to the early 1960s, few scholars have examined the predictive ability of childhood animal cruelty motives and their relationship to later violence toward humans. Based on a sample of 257 male inmates, the present study examines the relationship between four retrospectively identified motives for childhood animal cruelty and later adult interpersonal violence. Almost half of the inmates reported engaging in childhood animal cruelty for fun. Over one-third of the respondents reported committing acts of childhood animal cruelty out of anger. Approximately 20% of the inmates …

A Physics-Based Adaptive Point Distribution Method For Computational Domain Discretization, Philip W. Fackler Dec 2017

A Physics-Based Adaptive Point Distribution Method For Computational Domain Discretization, Philip W. Fackler

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Two algorithms are presented which together generate well-spaced point distributions applied to curves, surfaces, and the volume of a computational domain. The first is a force equilibrium simulation which applies a simplified direct solution of the equations of motion at each node. Inter-nodal pair forces are computed based on the desired spacing between nodes and summed to provide a net force on each node. The nodes are allowed to travel a restricted distance with each locally distinct time step. The motion of the point distribution is stabilized by applying friction to each node from its neighboring nodes as well as …

Stokes are the leading cause of disability in adults in the United States. Falls are preve- lant at all stages of recovery among post-stroke patients, and falls can cause serious or life threatening injuries. In this thesis, multiple fall detections methods are explored in order to minimize the faller’s wait time. This research is an extension to our research on mStroke, a reall-time and automatic mobile health system for post stroke recovery and rehabilitation. The proposed system consists of an application (mobile app) that is paired with bluetooth low energy (BLE) modular sensor devices. The sensors provide real-time accerlation, and …

Linear Elastic Mesh Deformation Via Localized Orthotropic Material Properties Optimized By The Adjoint Method, William L. Shoemake Dec 2017

Linear Elastic Mesh Deformation Via Localized Orthotropic Material Properties Optimized By The Adjoint Method, William L. Shoemake

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The finite element method has been shown to be a powerful tool in computational engineering with recent application to electromagnetics and fluid dynamics. However, achieving the high orders of accuracy easily available to the finite element method has proven difficult due to conforming higher-order meshes to curved geometries. If higher-order nodes are not placed on the surface of the geometry error is introduced into the simulated solution. This barrier is largely a non-issue for inviscid meshes where a mid-edge node can be projected onto the nearest geometry surface with minimal detrimental side effects. Viscous meshes however have to deform most …

The Interaction Between Operational Flexibility And Financial Flexibility, Onur Boyabatli, Tiecheng Leng Dec 2017

The Interaction Between Operational Flexibility And Financial Flexibility, Onur Boyabatli, Tiecheng Leng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the interaction between operational flexibility and financial flexibility in a multi-product business unit that makes operational decisions based on financial resources provided by its parent company (or headquarters). We capture operational flexibility through investment in flexible technology and financial flexibility through higher availability of financial resources. We consider the flexible-versus-dedicated technology choice and capacity investment decisions of a two-product business unit under demand uncertainty in the presence of budget constraints. The unit operates under a capital budget for financing the capacity investment, and an operating budget, which is uncertain in the capacity investment stage, for financing the …

Base Faith, Stefano Harney, Fred Moten Dec 2017

Base Faith, Stefano Harney, Fred Moten

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The earth moves against the world. And today the response of the world is clear. The world answers in fire and flood. The more the earth churns the more vicious the world’s response. But the earth still moves. Tonika Sealy Thompson might call it a procession. The earth’s procession is not on the world’s calendar. It is not a parade on a parade ground. It is not in the world’s teleology. Nor is the procession exactly a carnival played to mock or overturn this parade, to take over its grounds. A procession moves unmoved by the world. The earth’s procession …

Hedge Fund Franchises, William Fung, David Hsieh, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo Dec 2017

Hedge Fund Franchises, William Fung, David Hsieh, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Duplicate, see https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/lkcsb_research/5964/. We investigate the growth strategies of hedge fund firms. We find that firms with successful first funds are able to launch follow-on funds that charge higher performance fees, set more onerous redemption terms, and attract greater inflows. Motivated by the aforementioned spillover effects, first funds outperform follow-on funds, after adjusting for risk. The multiple-product growth strategy hurts investors while benefiting hedge fund firms; multiple-product firms underperform single-product firms but harvest greater fee revenues. Investors respond to this growth strategy by redeeming from first funds of firms with follow-on funds that do poorly. Moreover, skilled investors allocate …

Inventory Management Based On Target-Oriented Robust Optimization, Yun Fong Lim, Chen Wang Dec 2017

Inventory Management Based On Target-Oriented Robust Optimization, Yun Fong Lim, Chen Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We propose a target-oriented robust optimization approach to solve a multi-product, multi-period inventory management problem subject to ordering capacity constraints. We assume the demand for each product in each period is characterized by an uncertainty set, which depends only on a reference value and the bounds of the demand. Our goal is to find an ordering policy that maximizes the sizes of all the uncertainty sets such that all demand realizations from the sets will result in a total cost lower than a pre-specified cost target. We prove that a static decision rule is optimal for an approximate formulation of …

© 2017 The Author(s). The present study considered the pharmacokinetic evaluation of empagliflozin after administration to Egyptian volunteers, and the results were compared with other ethnic populations. The FDA recognizes that standard methods of defining racial subgroups are necessary to compare results across pharmacokinetic studies and to assess potential subgroup differences. The design of the study was as an open labeled, randomized, one treatment, one period, single dose pharmacokinetic study. The main pharmacokinetic parameters estimated were Cmax, Tmax, t1/2, elimination rate constant, AUC0-t and AUC0-inf. The insignificant difference in pharmacokinetic parameters between Egyptians and white German subjects suggests that no …

An Assessment Of When, Where And Under What Conditions In-Store Sampling Is Most Effective, Sandeep R. Chandukala, Jeffrey P. Dotson, Qing Liu Dec 2017

An Assessment Of When, Where And Under What Conditions In-Store Sampling Is Most Effective, Sandeep R. Chandukala, Jeffrey P. Dotson, Qing Liu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In-store product sampling is a commonly used promotional technique designed to give prospective consumers an opportunity to experience a product prior to purchase. While prior research has documented a positive relationship between short-term sales and perceptual measures of the customer shopping experience, little is known about the long-term impact of sampling or factors that moderate its success. In this paper, we develop an empirical approach that allows us to study the short-term and long-term effects of in-store sampling on both own and competitive products. We apply our approach to six store-level scanner data sets across four different product categories and …
