Identifying Genetic Factors Influencing Sperm Mobility Phenotype In Chicken Using Genome Wide Association Studies, Primordial Germ Cell Transplantation, And Rnaseq., Sohita Ojha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sperm mobility is a major determinant of male fertility in chicken. In spite of low heritability of reproductive traits, sperm mobility has high heritability index which suggests presence of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing the trait. Our research focused on three objectives: i) to identify the QTLs affecting low mobility phenotype in chicken, ii) to understand the impact of Sertoli-cells and germ cells interactions in influencing the mobility phenotype and iii) to identify the genes and gene networks differentially expressed in male and female PGCs. To detect the QTLs, genome wide association studies (GWAS) was conducted which revealed the presence …

Student Voice Initiative: Exploring Implementation Strategies, Blaine G. Alexander Dec 2017

Student Voice Initiative: Exploring Implementation Strategies, Blaine G. Alexander

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Student voice is the process of allowing students to work collaboratively with adults to produce a learning culture that is conducive for optimum growth in every student. In a traditional setting, the adults make the decisions and the students are passive observers in the learning process. Data has shown that this traditional culture is not advantageous to student learning for all students. Research has shown that students are seven times more academically motivated when they have the opportunity to have a voice in their personal learning process (Quaglia, 2016). This case study centered on the Northeast Arkansas Regional Student Voice …

Methodologies For Solving Integrated Transportation And Scheduling Problems, Fereydoun Adbesh Dec 2017

Methodologies For Solving Integrated Transportation And Scheduling Problems, Fereydoun Adbesh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes novel solution techniques to optimize two real-world problems in the area of scheduling and transportation. We first consider a model for optimizing the operations of dredges. In this problem, scheduling and assignment decisions are integrated across a finite planning horizon. Additional constraints and problem elements explicitly considered include, but are not limited, to environmental work window restrictions, budget limitations, dredge operation rates and schedule-dependent dredge availability. Our approach makes use of Constraint Programming (CP) to obtain quality and robust solutions within an amount of time small enough to be useful to practitioners. The expanded feature set of …

How Should Clinicians Weigh The Benefits And Harms Of Discussing Politicized Topics That Influence Their Individual Patients' Health?, Diana Alame, Robert D. Truog Dec 2017

How Should Clinicians Weigh The Benefits And Harms Of Discussing Politicized Topics That Influence Their Individual Patients' Health?, Diana Alame, Robert D. Truog

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Health implications of politically charged phenomena are particularly difficult for physicians to discuss with their patients and communities. Addressing climate change and its associated health effects involves trade-offs between health and economic prosperity, necessitating that physicians weigh the potential benefits and risks of discussing climate change health effects. We argue that the potential benefits of physician communication and advocacy ultimately outweigh the potential risks. Therefore, physicians should be supported in their efforts to educate their patients and communities about climate change health effects. Furthermore, democratic deliberation could prove helpful in addressing disagreements among physicians within a practice about such politicized …

Cardozo Law Review

When Rachel contacted Bizchut, the Israel Center for Human Rights of People with Disabilities, she was in the hospital in the final stages of terminal cancer. At seventy years old, she had no family, her condition was deteriorating, she had begun to use a wheelchair, and she was in a great deal of pain. In the past, she had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Her doctors refused to release her from the hospital without the appointment of a guardian. Rachel had no guardian and she did not want one. Rachel was an intelligent and realistic woman who knew that if …

"We Heard Canada Was A Free Country": African American Migration In The Great Plains, 1890-1911, Rachel M. Wolters Dec 2017

"We Heard Canada Was A Free Country": African American Migration In The Great Plains, 1890-1911, Rachel M. Wolters

Dissertations

This study uses a transnational lens to examine the migration of Black Americans from Oklahoma to Canada in the early 20th century. Although scholars have documented this movement, they have not fully explored the vital and durable transnational connections among African American immigrants themselves. The use of family histories, newspaper articles, and immigration files show how black migrants searched for land and equality in Canada and attempted to build all black communities. Encouraged by the promises of Canadian immigration recruiters, black migrants left their homes and Jim Crowism in Oklahoma to settle in a “free country” and to realize the …

Modeling Acoustic Microfluidic Phenomena In Unconventional Geometries, Andrew Ledbetter Dec 2017

Modeling Acoustic Microfluidic Phenomena In Unconventional Geometries, Andrew Ledbetter

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

In this work, the performance of a piezoelectrically-actuated ultrasonic droplet generator is analyzed by modeling the harmonic response of a two-dimensional representation of the device cross-section. Observed vibrational and acoustic resonances provide insight into optimal design conditions to achieve efficient, robust droplet ejection. Numerical simulations highlight the importance of the coupled electrical and mechanical behavior of the resonator assembly and show that elastic modes can effectively amplify or dampen acoustic modes within the fluid chamber. Experimentally-validated modeling results guide development of an optimization strategy to further improve device performance. In addition, the standing acoustic field that is the focus of …

A Comparison Between Self-Cleaning Properties Via Rolling Droplets And Condensation On Superhyrophobic Surfaces, David Leland Miller Dec 2017

A Comparison Between Self-Cleaning Properties Via Rolling Droplets And Condensation On Superhyrophobic Surfaces, David Leland Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces are super water repellent surfaces on which a droplet of water will bead up like a marble and roll off the surface with minimal tilting of the surface. This is caused by the combination of a hydrophobic coating and a rough surface structure. To achieve thermodynamic stability, surface tension of the water pulls the droplet into this shape to minimize the contact area between the droplet and the surface. This creates a high contact angle (CA) between the droplet and the surface and a low sliding angle (SA) of which the droplet begins to roll off the …

Accommodation, Decorum, And Disputatio: Matteo Ricci's The True Meaning Of The Lord Of Heaven As A Renaissance Humanist Disputation, Roberto Sebastian Leon Dec 2017

Accommodation, Decorum, And Disputatio: Matteo Ricci's The True Meaning Of The Lord Of Heaven As A Renaissance Humanist Disputation, Roberto Sebastian Leon

Theses and Dissertations

Matteo Ricci's True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven (1603) has been studied extensively by scholars of the Jesuit China Mission, especially in terms of accommodation through means of Scholastic and Humanist arguments and translation choices. Few of these studies, however, discuss the genre of this work (disputation), nor consider this genre in relation to Renaissance rhetorical teachings and how this relationship informs Ricci's accommodative strategies. The purpose of this paper is to remedy this gap in early modern Jesuit scholarship. Through a review of the history of accommodations in disputations in the Aristotelian-Scholastic and Ciceronian-Humanist traditions, this paper claims …

Microstructural Evaluation Of Hydrogen Embrittlement And Successive Recovery In Advanced High Strength Steel, Quentin Scott Allen Dec 2017

Microstructural Evaluation Of Hydrogen Embrittlement And Successive Recovery In Advanced High Strength Steel, Quentin Scott Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have high susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, and are often exposed to hydrogen environments in processing. In order to study the embrittlement and recovery of steel, tensile tests were conducted on two different types of AHSS over time after hydrogen charging. Concentration measurements and hydrogen microprinting were carried out at the same time steps to visualize the hydrogen behavior during recovery. The diffusible hydrogen concentration was found to decay exponentially, and equations were found for the two types of steel. Hydrogen concentration decay rates were calculated to be -0.355 /hr in TBF steel, and -0.225 /hr …

Clinical Predictors Of Movement Patterns In Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability, Seong Jun Son Dec 2017

Clinical Predictors Of Movement Patterns In Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability, Seong Jun Son

Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) patients have varying levels of mechanical and sensorimotor impairments that may lead to disparate functional movement patterns. Current literature on landing biomechanics in a CAI population, however, considers all patients as a homogeneous group. In our prior work, we identified 6 subgroups of movement patterns using lower extremity kinematics during a landing/cutting task and that showed promise in furthering understanding of movement patterns in a laboratory-based environment. To increase the utility of this methodology in clinical settings, there is a need to find easily administered clinical tests that can help identify multiple subgroups of movement …

Current State Of Practice Associated With The Use Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) In The Custom Home Building Industry, William Noble Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has entered the construction industry and has permeated the commercial sector. Research is continually performed to expand the capabilities and applications within the industry. However, research has historically been mostly limited to the commercial sector and has seen little expansion to other sectors of the industry including the residential sector. The potential cause for this may be the limited number of industry professionals who utilize the software to the benefit of their companies. The focus of this study was specifically the custom home building sector of residential construction in the United States because of the unique …

Theses and Dissertations

Vapor pressure (Pvap), heat of vaporization (ΔHvap), liquid heat capacity (Cpl), and ideal gas heat capacity (Cpig) are important properties for process design and optimization. This work focuses on improving the thermodynamic consistency and accuracy of the aforementioned properties since these can drastically affect the reliability, safety, and profitability of chemical processes. They can be measured for pure organic compounds from the triple point, through the normal boiling point, and up to the critical point. Additionally, ΔHvap is proportional to the derivative of vapor …

The Morphology And Uniformity Of Circumstellar Oh/H2O Masers Around Oh/Ir Stars, Derek Sean Felli Dec 2017

The Morphology And Uniformity Of Circumstellar Oh/H2O Masers Around Oh/Ir Stars, Derek Sean Felli

Theses and Dissertations

Even though low mass stars (< 8 solar masses) vastly outnumber high mass stars (< 8 solar masses), the more massive stars drive the chemical evolution of galaxies from which the next generation of stars and planets can form. Understanding mass loss of asymptotic giant branch stars contributes to our understanding of the chemical evolution of the galaxy, stellar populations, and star formation history. Stars with mass < 8 solar masses form planetary nebulae, while those with mass < 8 solar masses go supernova. In both cases, these stars enrich their environments with elements heavier than simple hydrogen and helium molecules. While some general info about how stars die and form planetary nebulae are known, specific details are missing due to a lack of high-resolution observations and analysis of the intermediate stages. For example, we know that mass loss in stars creates morphologically diverse planetary nebulae, but we do not know the uniformity of these processes, and therefore lack detailed models to better predict how spherically symmetric stars form asymmetric nebulae. We have selected a specific group of late-stage stars and observed them at different scales to reveal the uniformity of mass loss through different layers close to the star. This includes observing nearby masers that trace the molecular shell structure around these stars. This study revealed detailed structure that was analyzed for uniformity to place constraints on how the mass loss processes behave in models. These results will feed into our ability to create more detailed models to better predict the chemical evolution of the next generation of stars and planets.

Laying The Foundation For A Fremont Phytolith Typology Using Select Plant Species Native To Utah County, Madison Natasha Pearce Dec 2017

Laying The Foundation For A Fremont Phytolith Typology Using Select Plant Species Native To Utah County, Madison Natasha Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

Archaeobotanical evidences for the presence of wild plants at Fremont archaeological sites are numerous. However, little can be positively argued for why those plants are present, if they were used by site inhabitants, and how they were used. Additionally, there are likely several wild plants that were used but that do not appear in the archaeobotanical record as pollen or macrobotanicals, the two most commonly identified plant remains. I argue that it is possible to provide better interpretations for how and why the Fremont used plants by researching how their historic counterparts, the Goshute, Shoshone, Ute, and Southern Paiute, used …

Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Self-Perception, And Stuttering Severity, Colleen Hogan Dec 2017

Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Self-Perception, And Stuttering Severity, Colleen Hogan

Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders

The present study investigated the possibility of a relationship between self-compassion, self-perception, and stuttering severity in adults who stutter. Four adults who identify as people who stutter were administered the Self-Compassion Scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Adults, the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering, and the Stuttering Severity Instrument. Results indicated a negative correlation between stuttering severity and self-compassion. A relationship was found between self-perception and stuttering severity and self-compassion in only one participant. It was concluded that practices of self-compassion may be beneficial in speech therapy for adults who stutter, and that both self-perception and self-compassion scales …

Introduction Of Videotaping Of Interrogations And The Lessons Of The Imaichi Case: A Case Of Conventional Criminal Justice Policy-Making In Japan, Setsuo Miyazawa, Mari Hirayama Dec 2017

Introduction Of Videotaping Of Interrogations And The Lessons Of The Imaichi Case: A Case Of Conventional Criminal Justice Policy-Making In Japan, Setsuo Miyazawa, Mari Hirayama

Washington International Law Journal

Malcolm M. Feeley examined cases of criminal justice reform in the United States, where reforms can be conceived and initiated in a very open structure, but implementation of the introduced reforms can be handed over to highly fragmented implementers. The story of mandatory videotaping of interrogations and accompanying changes in Japan demonstrates the reform process at the other end of the scale, where the members of the criminal justice establishment can exert a strong influence even at the conception and initiation stages, and have even stronger control at the implementation and routinization stages. We believe that Feeley’s theoretical framework can …

Diversification Of The Japanese Judiciary, Daniel H. Foote Dec 2017

Diversification Of The Japanese Judiciary, Daniel H. Foote

Washington International Law Journal

Japan has a career judiciary. The Courts Act of 1947 provides that judges may be appointed from among prosecutors, attorneys, and law professors. In practice, however, the vast majority of judges come from a fourth category, “assistant judges,” who are appointed directly upon completion of the legal training program and typically serve through retirement. This continues a career tradition that dates back to the late nineteenth century. For nearly that long, the Japanese bar has been advocating that the career system should be abolished and that a substantial portion of the judiciary, if not all judges, should be drawn from …

"So Far As War Allows": Why The Al Mahdi Conviction Is Unlikely To Stem The Pace Of Cultural Destruction Perpetrated By Non-State Actors, Jessica E. Burrus Dec 2017

"So Far As War Allows": Why The Al Mahdi Conviction Is Unlikely To Stem The Pace Of Cultural Destruction Perpetrated By Non-State Actors, Jessica E. Burrus

Washington International Law Journal

In September of 2016, Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi was convicted in the International Criminal Court (“ICC”) for the intentional destruction of several World Heritage sites during the 2012 conflict in Timbuktu, Mali. This conviction was hailed as a breakthrough after years of frustration with the lack of enforcement of international laws prohibiting the destruction of cultural property. It was also the first conviction of its kind, and advocates of cultural preservation have celebrated it as a much-needed general deterrent in North Africa and the Middle East, where iconoclasm has become a favorite tactic of various state and non-state actors …

Hermit-Neutics: Textualism In H. D. Thoreau's Walden, Eleftherios Mastronikolas Dec 2017

Hermit-Neutics: Textualism In H. D. Thoreau's Walden, Eleftherios Mastronikolas

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

According to Joseph North’s Literary Criticism: A Concise Political History, the titular discipline is today the site of a hegemonic historicist/contextualist practice. It ascended to this hegemony by edging out a different literary practice, what I call textualism, first thought through by the New Critics but also yoked by them to religious themes. North argues that since historicism/contextualism transforms literary criticism into a site of knowledge production and the commodification of literature as part of the “neoliberalization” of the university, the time has come to return to textualist practice so as to combat this trend, if only at a discursive …

The "Narrative Impulse" And Literary Intervention In The Public Science Discourse, Lauren Kilian Dec 2017

The "Narrative Impulse" And Literary Intervention In The Public Science Discourse, Lauren Kilian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation examines diverse perspectives that literary authors, popular science writers, and academics bring to bear on the question of who can contribute to public science discourse. That discourse has a vexed history; it inherits assumptions of incompatibility from debates about a “Two Cultures” divide, and has been the battleground of the “Science Wars” between scientists and cultural theorists. I move beyond discord and valuation, in favor of a “participatory model,” where both scientists and nonscientists promote the scientific literacy of the lay public. My project juxtaposes popular science alongside literature, which illuminates narrative's alternately constructive and destructive role in …
