The aim of this article is to revisit this debate by mapping out a range of perspectives on video games as art. The authors explore the relation between games and different definitions and functions of art, different motives of artists, and the potential impact of the arts. The …

Black Australia ‘Writes Back’ To The Literary Traditions Of Empire, Danica Čerče Dec 2017

Black Australia ‘Writes Back’ To The Literary Traditions Of Empire, Danica Čerče

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

I In her article "Black Australia 'Writes Back' to the Literary Traditions of Empire" Danica Čerče discusses the verse of Australian Indigenous authors Romaine Moreton and Alf Taylor, notable for the overt objection to the institutional and historical processes. These have enabled and maintained the dominant position of those identified as white on the one hand, and the concomitant political, economic, and cultural subordination of Indigenous Australians on the other. Focused on strategies and poetic devices used by the two poets to engage non-Indigenous readers in the experience of their writing, the article examines how the rhetoric of their critique …

Alternative Biographies: (Re)Telling Feminine (Hi)Stories In Selected 20th-Century Texts By Québécois Women Writers, Jessica Mcbride

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to examine the tendency on the part of several québécois women authors from the 20th century to create alternative feminine biographies for forgotten, undervalued, or misrepresented women from the past. Given the complex relationship the Québécois have with their provincial history, and the central role chauvinistic representations of women and the “Québec national text” play in safeguarding the québécois cultural identity, contemporary women writers from Québec are singularly poised to resurrect, recreate, revive, and rewrite the feminine historical experience into the traditional discourse of History. From Québec’s most famous woman writer, Anne Hébert, …

Riddarasögur: Changing Medieval Norway With French Romance Literature, Elizabeth Tuggle Dec 2017

Riddarasögur: Changing Medieval Norway With French Romance Literature, Elizabeth Tuggle

Honors Theses

In the realm of Arthuriana, numerous versions exist of the adventures of King Arthur and his knights. The genre of the riddarasögur – “the sagas of knights” – contains Norwegian versions of these tales along with Norwegian versions of other French literature such as Marie de France’s lais and fabliaux. In the 13th century, King Hákon Hákonarson commissioned the translation of the French tales into Norwegian for the purpose of civilizing Norwegian society in general and the royal court in particular. Given the fair treatment of women and of love in the riddarasögur, King Hákon’s project to civilize his court …

Universal Screening And Progress Monitoring Within A Multi-Tiered System Of Supports, Mary Anne Fleury Dec 2017

Universal Screening And Progress Monitoring Within A Multi-Tiered System Of Supports, Mary Anne Fleury

Dissertations

Multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) is a systemic framework that includes response to intervention (RTI) and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) practices, yet the combination of academic and behavioral supports is still foreign to many districts. Universal screening and progress monitoring is one component of many MTSS frameworks across the country; however, some states have chosen to incorporate it within other components, leaving it off the statewide visual model. This study, Universal Screening and Progress Monitoring within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports, is a qualitative study that focused on teacher perceptions of their school’s universal screening and progress monitoring …

The Postmodern Novel In Saudi Arabia And America, Mohammed Lafi Alshammari Dec 2017

The Postmodern Novel In Saudi Arabia And America, Mohammed Lafi Alshammari

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the early twenty-first century, Saudi Arabia is a global economic power that stands as an equal among the other members of the most powerful economic organizations, including as the Group of Twenty and The World Trade Organization. As a result of this economic status and of Saudi Arabia never having been colonized, recent Saudi novels (especially those published after 2001) can usefully be read postmodern, rather than as postcolonial—the usual paradigm in readings of contemporary Arab novels. To establish a reference point, a comparative approach that engages Saudi and American postmodern novels is applied in this dissertation through the …

Post-Hurricane Maria Exodus From Puerto Rico And School Enrollment In Florida, Edwin Melendez, Jennifer Hinojosa, Nashia Roman Dec 2017

Post-Hurricane Maria Exodus From Puerto Rico And School Enrollment In Florida, Edwin Melendez, Jennifer Hinojosa, Nashia Roman

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico and its population has led to a significant exodus to the United States, especially to the state of Florida. Prior estimates of the magnitude of this exodus have been based on movement of passengers or statistical projections based on recent migration trends from Puerto Rico to the United States. In this report, we use post-Hurricane Maria school enrollment data from Florida school districts to assess the population flows from Puerto Rico. School enrollment data is considered a more reliable indicator of permanent migration than other data currently available.

It focuses on how the law does not adequately protect endangered invertebrate pollinators from inadvertent pesticide poisoning and introduces the threat that this poses to our food system.

The Franco-American Love Affair: Transnational Courtship And Marriage Patterns During The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Nicole Leopoldie Dec 2017

The Franco-American Love Affair: Transnational Courtship And Marriage Patterns During The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Nicole Leopoldie

History Dissertations - Archive

This work deals with courtships and marriages that transcend national, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. It deals with the formation of transnational families and transnational spaces. And finally, because the historical concept of transnational marriage provides a unique prism through which to view the interconnectedness of societies at their most intimate cultural intersections, it deals with the longstanding, complex cultural relations between France and the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In an effort to address not only why Franco-American marriages occurred but how and why the dynamics that produced them changed over time, this work examines and compares …

Effects Of Climatic Loading In Flexible Pavement Subgrades In Texas, Asif Ahmed Dec 2017

Effects Of Climatic Loading In Flexible Pavement Subgrades In Texas, Asif Ahmed

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Expansive soils, which have been reported as a worldwide problem, cover 25% of the United States. Due to the swelling and shrinkage behavior induced by moisture variations, expansive soil contributes to volumetric deformation, which in turn affects the stability and performance of structures. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) allocates 25% of its budget to pavement maintenance and repairs, much of which is triggered by expansive soil. In order to decrease the burden of this expense on maintenance authorities, it is necessary to have an accurate understanding of expansive subgrade behavior. Applying this knowledge to the pavement design and construction …

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Soil Moisture In Evapotranspiration Cover System, Md Ishtiaque Hossain Dec 2017

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Soil Moisture In Evapotranspiration Cover System, Md Ishtiaque Hossain

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A conventional landfill cover system is designed as a barrier layer system, with low hydraulic conductivity, to minimize the percolation of water from the cover to the waste. Evapotranspiration (ET) covers are currently becoming a popular alternative that are acceptable to landfill authorities, due to their cost effectiveness and nature-friendly performance. The principle function of the ET cover is to store the infiltrated water, using the water balance technique, until it is transpired by plants into the atmosphere, thus minimizing percolation. The performance of the final cover system is assessed by monitoring the soil moisture in the ET cover and …

Growing business literature reveals concerns about the quality and level of preparedness of business graduates entering the labor market. This study focused on the competencies, skills, and traits business students perceived as important for being a successful employee. Two hundred and sixty nine student participants from four business disciplines at a regional state university in Eastern Kentucky were randomly recruited to complete a 60-item survey. Participants rated the importance of traits and qualities as well as academic knowledge/subjects. The results indicated that participants categorized various traits and qualities of successful business professionals, suggested by experts and scholars (Beggs, 2012; Kavanagh, …

Impact Of Terminology Mapping On Population Health Cohorts Impact, Barbara A. Berkovich Dec 2017

Impact Of Terminology Mapping On Population Health Cohorts Impact, Barbara A. Berkovich

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background and Objectives: The population health care delivery model uses phenotype algorithms in the electronic health record (EHR) system to identify patient cohorts targeted for clinical interventions such as laboratory tests, and procedures. The standard terminology used to identify disease cohorts may contribute to significant variation in error rates for patient inclusion or exclusion. The United States requires EHR systems to support two diagnosis terminologies, the International Classification of Disease (ICD) and the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED). Terminology mapping enables the retrieval of diagnosis data using either terminology. There are no standards of practice by which to evaluate and …

Water Surface Impact And Ricochet Of Deformable Elastomeric Spheres, Randy Craig Hurd Dec 2017

Water Surface Impact And Ricochet Of Deformable Elastomeric Spheres, Randy Craig Hurd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soft and deformable silicone rubber spheres ricochet from a water surface when rigid spheres and disks (or skipping stones) cannot. This dissertation investigates why these objects are able to skip so successfully. High speed cameras allow us to see that these unique spheres deform significantly as they impact the water surface, flattening into pancake-like shapes with greater area. Though the water entry behavior of deformable spheres deviates from that of rigid spheres, our research shows that if this deformation is accounted for, their behavior can be predicted from previously established methods. Soft spheres skip more easily because they deform significantly …

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen: 6p-1s And 6p-2s Systems, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Chandra M. Adhikari Dec 2017

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen: 6p-1s And 6p-2s Systems, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Chandra M. Adhikari

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The collisional shift of a transition constitutes an important systematic effect in highprecision spectroscopy. Accurate values for van der Waals interaction coefficients are required in order to evaluate the distance-dependent frequency shift. We here consider the interaction of excited hydrogen 6P atoms with metastable atoms (in the 2S state), in order to explore the influence of quasi-degenerate 2P and 6S states on the dipole-dipole interaction. The motivation for the calculation is given by planned high-precision measurements of the transition. Due to the presence of quasi-degenerate levels, one can use the non-retarded approximation for the interaction terms over wide distance ranges.
