Finding Hidden Relationships Between Medical Concepts By Leveraging Metamap And Text Mining Techniques, Weikang Yang

Computer Science

A lot of efforts have been made in order to make new discoveries in the biomedical filed. However, those valuable information may be hidden in text without applying appropriate text mining techniques. In this paper, I utilize MetaMap, a powerful biomedical tool provided by National Library of Medicine (NLM), along with appropriate text mining techniques, to detect hidden connections between biomedical concepts. The huge volume of Medline documents are used as data source and experimental data, where more than 20 million titles and abstracts of Medline articles are analyzed. On top of this corpus, biomedical concept queries are enabled to …

Cultural Differences In Attention: Eye Movement Evidence From A Comparative Visual Search Task., Albandri Alotaibi, Geoffrey Underwood, Alastair D. Smith

School of Psychology

Individual differences in visual attention have been linked to thinking style: analytic thinking (common in individualistic cultures) is thought to promote attention to detail and focus on the most important part of a scene, whereas holistic thinking (common in collectivist cultures) promotes attention to the global structure of a scene and the relationship between its parts. However, this theory is primarily based on relatively simple judgement tasks. We compared groups from Great Britain (an individualist culture) and Saudi Arabia (a collectivist culture) on a more complex comparative visual search task, using simple natural scenes. A higher overall number of fixations …

The Impact Of Mobile Learning On Student Performance As Gauged By Standardised Test (Naplan) Scores, S Males, F Bate, J Macnish

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This paper discusses the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) performance of Years Five, Seven and Nine students in standardised tests prior and post the implementation of a mobile learning initiative in a Western Australian school for boys. The school sees the use of ICT as important in enhancing its potential to deliver optimal educational outcomes. However, the School is also cognisant of the shared concern of teachers and parents in the school community about an over-reliance on mobile devices for learning, to the detriment of students’ accomplishments in literacy and numeracy. The paper examines NAPLAN results from …
