Perspectives Of Two Ethnically Different Pre-Service Teacher Populations As They Learn About Folk Literature, Donita Massengill Shaw, Jackie Boyd, Diane Corcoran Nielson May 2017

Perspectives Of Two Ethnically Different Pre-Service Teacher Populations As They Learn About Folk Literature, Donita Massengill Shaw, Jackie Boyd, Diane Corcoran Nielson

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers’ knowledge of folk literature in general and that of a selected country or culture in particular before and after studying it in a college children's literature course and completing an assignment. We specifically compared two sample populations: those of primarily European American descent at a research university and those of Native American ethnicity at an Inter-tribal Native American university to see if there were similarities or differences in their knowledge about and value of folk literature. Participants from each university were selected to complete a pre-post questionnaire and a post-interview …

Éticas Y Estéticas De La Profanación: Redes Y Tensiones En La Literatura Peruana Y Venezolana Del Entre Siglos (1880-1910), Luz Ainai Morales Pino

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes a selection of literary productions from Peru and Venezuela´s entre siglos (1880-1910) from a relational perspective that combines some of the tenets of literary studies, visual culture studies, and gender studies. This dialogical approach is groundbreaking in as much as it puts in relation a set of texts that have never been studied together, given their apparent aesthetic and ideological divergences. With this method, I aim to problematize the taxonomies set by the critical tradition, as well as to articulate a wider and more complex perception of Perú and Venezuela´s entre siglos literary production. In that sense, …

The Etiology And Phenomenology Of Sexual Shame: A Grounded Theory Study, Noel Clark May 2017

The Etiology And Phenomenology Of Sexual Shame: A Grounded Theory Study, Noel Clark

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Although sexual shame is widely present in social discourse and has previously been described clinically—as shame related to sexual thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and attitudes—it has not been defined in an operational manner that can be empirically tested. This study creates a bridge between the colloquial knowledge regarding sexual shame found in clinical practice and the way in which sexual shame is defined and measured scientifically in the psychological research literature. Grounded theory was used in this study to generate theory related to the development and experience of sexual shame. The concept of sexual shame was explored from both a personal …

The Force Of Seduction: The Use Of Rape Narratives In The Plays Of Aphra Behn, Caitlyn Piccirillo

Theses and Dissertations

The English Restoration’s heightened interest in sexuality promoted the use of rape narratives on the stage. Aphra Behn, the first woman to earn her living as a playwright, used these narratives in her work (specifically in The Rover and The City Heiress) as a means of social critique.

Introduction, Angela K. Smith, Krista Cowman

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

One hundred years after the outbreak, historians and media commentators alike agree that the First World War occupies an almost unique place in cultural memory. Shared ways of remembering the conflict continue to develop even as those who had personal experience of the war have died. But whereas traditionally, historiographical focus has rested on the Western Front, more recently scholars have begun to consider the real global repercussions of the war. Although the direct protagonists were the great powers of Europe, their involvement had the effect of pulling many other nations towards the conflict. In the century and half before …

Knowledge Systems And The Colonial Legacies In African Science Education, Edward Lehner, John R. Ziegler May 2017

Knowledge Systems And The Colonial Legacies In African Science Education, Edward Lehner, John R. Ziegler

Publications and Research

This review surveys Femi Otulaja and Meshach Ogunniyi’s (2015) Handbook of Research in Science Education in Sub-Saharan Africa, noting the significance of the theoretically rich content and how this book contributes to the field of education as well as to the humanities more broadly. The volume usefully outlines the ways in which science education and scholarship in sub-Saharan Africa continue to be impacted by the region’s colonial history. Several of the chapters also enumerate proposals for teaching and learning science and strengthening academic exchange. Concerns that recur across many of the chapters include inadequate implementation of reforms; a lack …

Adopting A Third Gender In The United States, Anna K. Self May 2017

Adopting A Third Gender In The United States, Anna K. Self

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The United States should consider adopting a third gender in order accommodate all of its citizens comfortably. The concept of a third gender has existed in past societies such as the Inuit and the Yoruba, but has not been accepted in Western societal structures. By examining how the third gender was integrated into other societies, the United States will be able to learn how to properly adapt the idea for modern times including deciding which aspects are important for modern use. The United States must also consider how to classify its intersexed individuals, as they do not fit within either …

The Shame In Privilege, Rachel Smith May 2017

The Shame In Privilege, Rachel Smith

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

This essay explores the ideas of affect theory, specifically shame, as it is seen in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go (2005). In the novel, shame is presented as being derived from privilege. This essay examines how this shame of privilege is manifested in the three types of characters presented: the Hailsham clones, the non-cloned people, and the reader. In the dystopian society of post-war England, the Hailsham clones are given the privilege of a comfortable and caring childhood. This is in contrast to the normal clones, who spend their childhoods in uncomfortable government homes, treated horrifically. Even though …

Kentucky Streams And Wetlands, 2009-2017: A Comparative Study, Dennis M. Smith

Honors Theses

The bulk of Eastern Kentucky University’s 22 county service region provides an ideal landscape within which to observe, study and promote awareness on key, critical issues facing the commonwealth today regarding environmental conservation and restoration, as well as the impacts made upon communities. These issues are not new to Kentuckians and have been studied and concerned citizens state-wide for many years. Owing to her years of work and data collections in the area of stream and wetlands conservation in Kentucky (particularly Eastern Kentucky), Sociologist Dr. Stephanie Mcspirit has provided ideal conditions to explore this issue at the undergraduate level. Through …

The Possible Effect Of Cypsela Morphology On Endemism In Solidago Shortii, Evan P. Singleton May 2017

The Possible Effect Of Cypsela Morphology On Endemism In Solidago Shortii, Evan P. Singleton

Honors Theses

This project centers around the differences between the Solidago altissima and the S. shortii, or Common and Short’s Goldenrods, respectively, and endeavors to provide an explanation for the narrow endemism of shortii, relative to that of altissima. The Common Goldenrod has a range spanning from Southern Canada to Northern Mexico, while the Short’s is found only in two isolated locations in Kentucky and Indiana. They are rather similar to the untrained eye but further observation reveals drastic morphological differences between the seeds of the two species, with those of the Short’s being far larger than those of …

How Teachers Use Beliefs And Knowledge In Changing Contexts: A Multi-Site Ethnographic Study With Nicaraguan Multigrade Elementary School Teachers, Tenley M. Ruth

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This ethngoraphic study investigates how multigrade elementary school teachers in the central-northern mountains of Nicaragua developed and used shared societal, institutional and individual belief systems and knowledge to both understand and decide if, how, when and with whom to act upon the government’s values education curriculum and mandates. To understand teacher use of overlapping beliefs systems, the research provided parallel ethnographic accounts of teachers’, parents’ and government officials’ interpretations and actions regarding values education. The findings suggest that teachers used a wide panorama of overlapping and often contradictory beliefs systems in addition to beliefs about teaching and learning in general …

Culture, Power And Identity; The Case Of Ang Hien Hoo, Malang, Melani Budianta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper discusses the intricate relations between culture and identity in a web of larger power structures of politics and the market by looking at the ways in which the Indonesian Chinese attach themselves to a local performing arts tradition. The paper focuses on the history of the wayang orang amateur club called Ang Hien Hoo in Malang, East Java, which emerged from a Chinese diaspora burial association, to attract national limelight in the 1950s and 1960s. In this paper, I see this amateur club as a site, not only for cultural assimilation, but also as a meeting space for …

Girls Are Us: A Collection Of Oral Histories From The Jmu Community, Anne M. Sherman May 2017

Girls Are Us: A Collection Of Oral Histories From The Jmu Community, Anne M. Sherman

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

On a campus where women make up a majority of the student population, it is especially important that female voices are heard and given a platform on which they can control their own narrative. I wanted to give those female-identifying voices that platform. I conducted a series of interviews to examine how college-aged female-identifying students feel about their identity and how they construct that identity within the climate of the JMU community. I was particularly interested in the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual preference, and ability. I asked each person to share their stories of times when they …

A Phantasmagoric Fairy Tale: “Zerinda” And The Doubling Of Wonder, Conor Hilton May 2017

A Phantasmagoric Fairy Tale: “Zerinda” And The Doubling Of Wonder, Conor Hilton

BYU English Symposium

“Zerinda—A Fairy Tale,” a largely forgotten British fairy tale found in Maria Jane Jewsbury’s Phantasmagoria: Sketches of Life and Literature (1825), a Romantic miscellany, serves as the basis of my analysis exploring how hegemony and wonder work together and against one another in the tale. This embodiment of heteroglossia serves as a doubling of the audience in its work to appeal to children and adults. The heteroglossia of audience in the text seems to be tightly linked with how wonder is portrayed. Zohar Shavit and Marina Warner’s insights into the child/adult divide of fairy tales and how they seek different …

Bicultural Beauty: How Latina And Asian American Women Interpret American Beauty Advertising, Katy Snell May 2017

Bicultural Beauty: How Latina And Asian American Women Interpret American Beauty Advertising, Katy Snell

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how bicultural-identified Latina and Asian American women interpret, negotiate, and utilize American beauty advertising in their identities as well as provides analysis concerning the broader marketplace ideologies embedded in the texts. This work is two-fold, utilizing critical textual analysis to examine advertisements featuring Latina and Asian women to then inform the questions for in-depth interviews between myself and 60 self-identified bicultural Asian and Latina American women. Under the paradigm of cultural studies, I utilized critical cultural theory, rhetorical agency, distinctiveness theory, and visual representation theory. In the in-depth interview section, I found that this burgeoning group of …

Domestic Violence Against Women In Peru: An Analysis Of Individual, Cultural, And Structural Factors, Hanna M. Pioske May 2017

Domestic Violence Against Women In Peru: An Analysis Of Individual, Cultural, And Structural Factors, Hanna M. Pioske

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Violence against women, despite decades of activism on the subject, remains a problem for women around the world. By one measure, over 35% of women globally have experienced either physical or sexual violence. The vast majority of this abuse occurs within the home. Although development programs often focus on women’s empowerment as a way of freeing women from the cycle of domestic abuse, research on this issue has been more mixed, finding that in some cases, women’s work outside the home or higher status relative to their husband can catalyze abuse. Peru is a particularly relevant case study for this …

Contemporary Jesuit Epistemological Interests, James G. Murphy May 2017

Contemporary Jesuit Epistemological Interests, James G. Murphy

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Apart from an orientation to and interest in the discernment of spirits as laid out in St Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises, there does not exist a Jesuit epistemology as such. Compared to the numbers of Jesuit systematic theologians, scripture scholars, metaphysicians, and ethicists, there have been few Jesuit epistemologists.2 In metaphysics, Jesuits have been Thomist or Suarezian, even Platonist. In ethics, they have ranged from proportionalist through deontologist to virtue ethicist. No similar distinctive Jesuit presence is to be found in epistemology....

Cultural Influences On Nonprofit Servant Leadership, Sungil Chung May 2017

Cultural Influences On Nonprofit Servant Leadership, Sungil Chung

Dissertations, 2014-2019

This research explores national and cultural differences in nonprofit leadership. Despite the global expansion of nonprofit organizations, limited research is found in the literature that studies national and cultural differences in nonprofit leadership specifically. This research is designed in two phases to address the overall research question of whether national cultures influence servant leadership in nonprofits. The first phase is a comparison study between U.S. nonprofit employees and South Korean nonprofit employees to examine if there are national differences on people’s preferences for nonprofit leadership. The second phase explores the relationship between Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions (i.e. power distance, individualism …
