"There's A Real Hole Here": Female Masochism And Spectatorship In Michael Haneke's La Pianiste, Morgan J. Jennings Jun 2017

"There's A Real Hole Here": Female Masochism And Spectatorship In Michael Haneke's La Pianiste, Morgan J. Jennings

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I examine the relationship between female masochism, performance, and spectatorship in Michael Haneke’s film La Pianiste (2001). The film stages a relationship to sexuality that structures the subject’s excruciating negotiations with the other as always mediated by the law, the letter, or the body as instrument, which is allegorized by the protagonist’s occupation as a piano teacher. In my analysis, I identify the ways in which the film paradoxically offers a critique of mediation’s effect on the feminine position while encouraging viewers to confront the possibility that desire is only possible through these mediations. Contributing to feminist …

Technologies Of Division: Everyday Bordering, Silvia Mata-Marin, Dan Lockton Jun 2017

Technologies Of Division: Everyday Bordering, Silvia Mata-Marin, Dan Lockton

Nordes Conference Series

This paper explores how border thinking allows us to situate sociotechnical systems in everyday social processes as designed ‘bordering’ systems, regulating access and exerting control by embodying politics of difference in the context of everyday life for migrants in the United States. Through a discussion of everyday designed artifacts—credit cards and drivers’ licenses—the paper examines the tensions created in a process of acculturation, and calls for designers to attend to the ways in which designed artifacts embody larger political structures, becoming actors in the politics of inclusion/exclusion.

The Ability To Make A Difference In Participatory Design Projects, Aditya Pawar Jun 2017

The Ability To Make A Difference In Participatory Design Projects, Aditya Pawar

Nordes Conference Series

The case study presented here is an intensive nineday community participation project in a Swiss town, aimed at fostering community food production. The approach to participatory design presented here seeks to emphasize the in-situ improvisatory ‘doing' of collaborative activities. Using notions such as diffusing, reifying and catalyzing the study describes the iterative movement of the project that is bound up in material arrangements and social relations. Through a reflection in action approach, the author unpacks how the designer's agency is understood through social interactions and acts of summarizing, materialization and translation. The paper concludes by discussing power and agency, both …

Beauty Or Brains, Cautious Or Courageous? Gender And Power In Online Visual Designs, Nina Lysbakken Jun 2017

Beauty Or Brains, Cautious Or Courageous? Gender And Power In Online Visual Designs, Nina Lysbakken

Nordes Conference Series

Gendered visual communication is a major part of contemporary, mediated discourse, yet these expressions are seldom reflected upon from a designers' perspective. Whose voices are empowered in tabloid newspapers and gendered magazines? In what ways can we express gender? In this visual essay, I provide an auto-ethnographic perspective, and use personal reflections and visualisations to show a process of deconstructing, shaping and encoding gendered expressions on mobile platforms from my point of view, as a designer and a woman. The essay contributes to research writing methodologies, by questioning conventional ways in which scholarly research is presented. I draw on concepts …

Futures Speculations On Time, Design And Thinking, Michael Haldrup Jun 2017

Futures Speculations On Time, Design And Thinking, Michael Haldrup

Nordes Conference Series

Currently both design thinking and critical social science experience an increased interest in speculating in alternative future scenarios. This interest is not least related to the challenges issues of global sustainability present for politics, ethics and design. This paper explores the potentials of speculative thinking in relation to design and social and cultural studies, arguing that both offer valuable insights for creating a speculative space for new emergent criticalities challenging current assumptions of the relations between power and design. It does so by tracing out discussions of ‘futurity’ and ‘futuring’ in design as well as social and cultural studies. Firstly, …

Who Wore It Best? Understanding Mediated Fashion As Design, Synne Skjulstad Jun 2017

Who Wore It Best? Understanding Mediated Fashion As Design, Synne Skjulstad

Nordes Conference Series

How interdisciplinary design practices intersect as a powerful communicational core in fashion is given little attention in design studies. Even as fashion design is a design domain in its own right, this paper argues that our conceptions of power in fashion need to more fully include fashion as a matter of communication design. This paper argues that power is enacted via combinations of material and immaterial articulations of design practices in fashion. Design practices are essential in shaping the tastes, styles, and desires at the heart of fashion, thus rendering fashion design as an expanded field that reaches far beyond …

What Is Your Critical Approach? Design, Power And Proximity, Shana Agid, Sissel Olander Jun 2017

What Is Your Critical Approach? Design, Power And Proximity, Shana Agid, Sissel Olander

Nordes Conference Series

This workshop explores strategies and tactics for “doing” critique in and through design research, The workshop invites design researchers from both descriptive-analytical fields and practise based and experimental fields to discuss the possibilities of critique and critical approaches in design research. The workshop invokes notions of critical distance and proximity through discussions of empirical examples provided by the organisers and participants in tandem. Participants will introduce themselves through a short, informal presentation of their work and its critical questions. Together, these case examples and questions will provide a frame for thinking about the critical capacities of descriptive-analytical and constructive design …

Prevalence Of Indecision Among Japanese Adults: A Collectivist Lifestyle Concept?, Miki Nomura Jun 2017

Prevalence Of Indecision Among Japanese Adults: A Collectivist Lifestyle Concept?, Miki Nomura

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Procrastination behavior sabotages their future performance, damages other people's perception of the person, and much more personal, academic, work-related, financial, and health problems (Ferrari, 2010). One purpose of this study was investigating the prevalence of decisional procrastinators on decision-making among Japanese adults, as an example of collectivistic countries in Asia. A total data of 2,603 adults (1,047 men, 1,521 women) residing in Japan was used. Two hypotheses, 1) the prevalence rates of chronic decisional procrastination among Japanese people would be higher than that of people in individualistic countries, and 2) participants who leaned to the collectivism dimension on Individualism-Collectivism scales …

Fading Colors Of The Tibetan Prayer Flag, Emilia Roza Sulek Jun 2017

Fading Colors Of The Tibetan Prayer Flag, Emilia Roza Sulek

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

2014 was a Horse Year. Such a year, occurring every twelve years in Tibetan calendar, is considered the best time for a pilgrimage, particularly to sacred mountains. In the region of Golok, the most prominent of them is Amnye Machen (A myes rma chen). It takes about one week to perform circumambulation of Amnye Machen in the usual way: on foot. But in 2014, a new possibility opened: to perform the pilgrimage by car. This paper describes the experiences of a car pilgrimage around Amnye Machen which the author performed in 2014. It shows how different the new pilgrimage route …

On The Road To Nowhere: Stalled Politics And Urban Infrastructure In Kathmandu, Dannah K. Dennis Jun 2017

On The Road To Nowhere: Stalled Politics And Urban Infrastructure In Kathmandu, Dannah K. Dennis

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

During the period leading up to the passage of the 2015 constitution in Nepal, the roads of Kathmandu were often interpreted by the city’s residents as symbols of the stalled constitutional process and of the faltering and corrupt nature of national politics in general. By detailing specific moments in which the inadequacy of roads and the inadequacy of the state were directly juxtaposed in everyday conversations, this article calls for sustained attention to the interrelationship between urban infrastructure and national- and local-level politics.

Propitiating The Tsen, Sealing The Mountain: Community Mountain-Closure Ritual And Practice In Eastern Bhutan, Riamsara Kuyakanon, Dorji Gyeltshen Jun 2017

Propitiating The Tsen, Sealing The Mountain: Community Mountain-Closure Ritual And Practice In Eastern Bhutan, Riamsara Kuyakanon, Dorji Gyeltshen

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This interdisciplinary study examines a community ritual in Mongar, eastern Bhutan, in connection to its socio-ecological context. We provide an in-depth documentation of the tsensöl (btsan gsol) deity-propitiation ritual to ‘seal’ territory and prohibit entry to higher mountain reaches. The ritual and the community mountain-closure period (ladam) that it precedes are first situated in context of other documented (but now defunct) territorial sealing practices in Tibet and the Buddhist Himalaya. We then analyse and discuss the syncretic, flexible and place-based nature of tsensöl, and show how the ritual, the mountain god Khobla Tsen and ladam are interrelated in expressing community …

Changing Publishing Ecologies: A Landscape Study Of New University Presses And Academic-Led Publishing: A Report To Jisc, Janneke Adema, Graham Stone, Chris Keene Jun 2017

Changing Publishing Ecologies: A Landscape Study Of New University Presses And Academic-Led Publishing: A Report To Jisc, Janneke Adema, Graham Stone, Chris Keene

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Introduction

A new wave of university presses is emerging. Common characteristics are that they are open access (OA), digital first, library-based, and they often offer a smaller set of services than a traditional publisher, blurring the line between publisher and platform. In tandem, a small but notable number of academics and researchers have set up their own publishing initiatives, often demonstrating an innovative or unique approach either in workflow, peer review, technology or business model.

These new publishing initiatives have a potentially disruptive effect on the scholarly communication environment, providing new avenues for the dissemination of research outputs and acting …

A Comparative Study Of Tourism And Hospitality Education In The United Kingdom And France, C Mansfield, H Seraphin Jun 2017

A Comparative Study Of Tourism And Hospitality Education In The United Kingdom And France, C Mansfield, H Seraphin

Plymouth Business School

Sufficient historical detail is provided on the development of tourism in France and the United Kingdom to provide a context for the discussion of how comparative education practices can inform and improve the provision of university education in Europe. Findings from a recent empirical comparative study of university provision for tourism and hospitality studies are presented and analysed to progress the work in this field of research. Finally, very recent moves, especially in industry-specific education in France, are combined with the teaching initiative called CLIL (Content & Language Integrated Learning) to offer a way forward for educators in tourism and …

Embodying Rhythm Nation: Multimodal Hip Hop Dance As A Site For Adolescent Social-Emotional And Political Development, Lauren M. Roygardner Jun 2017

Embodying Rhythm Nation: Multimodal Hip Hop Dance As A Site For Adolescent Social-Emotional And Political Development, Lauren M. Roygardner

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This exploratory study employed qualitative methodology, specifically values analysis, to learn more about how being involved within Hip hop dance communities positively relates to adolescent development. Adolescence was defined herein as ages 13-23. The study investigated Hip hop dance communities in terms of cultural expertise (i.e. novice, intermediate and advanced/expert) to look specifically at dance narratives (i.e. peak experience narratives and “I dance because” essays) and hip hop dance performances. The primary purpose of this dissertation was to (1) explore how adolescents use multimodal Hip hop dance discourse for social-emotional development and critical consciousness, and to (2) understand how values …

Not My Queer: Queer Representation In Contemporary Italian Serial Television, Julia Heim Jun 2017

Not My Queer: Queer Representation In Contemporary Italian Serial Television, Julia Heim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Contemporary Italian television, like many national televisions, has entered a period in which the relationships the producers and consumers of televisual content are increasingly indistinguishable. In this age of media convergence the new participants of this medium work across platforms to actively engage, consume, create, and recreate both televisual content and our understanding of the medium. These new relationships require a new understanding of the semiotic and discursive changes taking place in television so that we may reconceptualize the contemporary interplay between media and society.

This dissertation maps out a new understanding of the televisual economy through an elaboration of …

Theatre Translation As Historiography: Projections Of Greek Self-Identity Through English Translations During The European Crisis, Maria Mytilinaki Jun 2017

Theatre Translation As Historiography: Projections Of Greek Self-Identity Through English Translations During The European Crisis, Maria Mytilinaki

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project focuses on theatre translation from Modern Greek into English through the examination of three plays translated in the early years of the ongoing Greek crisis (2012-2014). Currently Greek culture is received internationally through two important frames of reference: Hellenism, the admiration for the ancient Greek spirit, and the more recent negative associations with modern Greece provoked by the Eurozone crisis. The three translations I examine challenge these dual external projections onto Greek culture by promoting a more nuanced image that recontextualizes the Greek past. In their capacity to travel between cultures, often in bilingual iterations, these theatrical translations …

Encountering Place, Pedagogy, And Culture: Study Abroad And Experiential Learning In Morocco And Indonesia, Jennifer M. Pipitone Jun 2017

Encountering Place, Pedagogy, And Culture: Study Abroad And Experiential Learning In Morocco And Indonesia, Jennifer M. Pipitone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Efforts to globalize higher education have resulted in study abroad climbing to an all-time high in the United States. Amidst this growth, emergent bodies of literature have uncovered problematic trends in study abroad that reproduce hierarchies of power and colonialism, perpetuate views of an exotic cultural “other,” and privilege tourism over education. In my dissertation, I respond to these problems by exploring ways of teaching and learning in study abroad that embrace the pedagogical power of place to foster awareness of the self in relation to other, cultivate relationality, and deconstruct the exotic. Rather than focusing on the individual as …

Nervous Salomes: New York Salomania And The Neurological Condition Of Modernité, Margaret K. Araneo Jun 2017

Nervous Salomes: New York Salomania And The Neurological Condition Of Modernité, Margaret K. Araneo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In January 1907, New York City had its first major encounter with the figure of Salome. Appearing on three large stages in the city simultaneously, the archetype of the dancing girl quickly became an object of controversy. Her appearance at the Metropolitan Opera House in its staging of Strauss’s Salome resulted in public debate and the ultimate closure of the performance by the Met’s Board of Directors. The event brought attention to the Salome archetype’s already contested character. Salome arrived in the United States from Europe where she had been the subject of a quarter century of debates about how …

Communicationists And Un-Artists: Pedagogical Experiments In California, 1966-1974, Hallie Rose Scott Jun 2017

Communicationists And Un-Artists: Pedagogical Experiments In California, 1966-1974, Hallie Rose Scott

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A network of experimental workshops, classes, and schools foregrounding interdisciplinary, non-hierarchical, and process-based approaches to teaching and learning emerged in coastal California between 1966 and 1974. These initiatives embodied a new pedagogical approach that I call “communication pedagogy,” in which students were taught to exchange ideas and collaborate, rather than to produce objects. Analyzing three central case studies, Anna and Lawrence Halprin’s Experiments in Environment workshops, Ant Farm’s proposals for learning networks, and Allan Kaprow’s ‘Happenings’ course, I argue that communication pedagogy helped to foster a new paradigm for artistic practice: the artist as facilitator and network-creator. By the mid-1970s …

Performing Human Rights In Neoliberal Asia: Artistic And Activist Engagements In Hong Kong, Malaysia, And Singapore, Melissa Wansin Wong Jun 2017

Performing Human Rights In Neoliberal Asia: Artistic And Activist Engagements In Hong Kong, Malaysia, And Singapore, Melissa Wansin Wong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines artistic and activist performances that address issues of rights abuses in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. I demonstrate how the centralized ruling parties encourage the neoliberalization of their economies while maintaining autocratic rule, thus intensifying structural inequalities while also clamping down on dissent. This condition then exacerbates the lack of labor, sexuality, and democratic rights. Concurrently, the states’ aspirations to be part of the global capitalist market have paradoxically provided conditional spaces of political and artistic expression. I contend that existing critiques of human rights from sociological and legalistic perspectives are inadequate for contemplating this state of …
