Stage Managing Bali Agung: The Possibility Of Hybridity In An Intercultural Production, Susan Fenty Studham Aug 2017

Stage Managing Bali Agung: The Possibility Of Hybridity In An Intercultural Production, Susan Fenty Studham

Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice

This paper explores notions of hybridity within an intercultural large-scale

show in Bali, including levels of innovation, synthesized processes, scenery and

safety considerations. As the original stage manager, I will discuss the mounting of

the show from a technical production perspective, giving attention to the use and

management of the stage space and its supporting environments. The focus is on

hybridity in the context of the term ‘syncretic theatre’, which “integrates performance

elements of different cultures into a form that aims to retain the cultural integrity of

the specific materials used while forging new texts and theatre practices” (Lo & …

Supporting Students Living Below The Poverty Line, H. Richard Milner Iv, Heather B. Cunningham, Ira E. Murray, Adam Alvarez Aug 2017

Supporting Students Living Below The Poverty Line, H. Richard Milner Iv, Heather B. Cunningham, Ira E. Murray, Adam Alvarez

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

In this article, we focus on interrelated mechanisms and practices that support students living below the poverty line. Addressing the needs of students living below the poverty line requires that educators consider both the inside- and outside-of-school realities of students and their families. Before discussing the recommendations, we define poverty and describe the complex ways it may shape student realities. We then discuss why we believe recommendations to support students must account for student realities outside of school. Finally, we outline recommendations for educators interested in becoming “poverty-responsive,” meaning that they discontinue practices that do not support students in poverty …

The cyclin D1 gene encodes the regulatory subunit of a holoenzyme that drives cell autonomous cell cycle progression and proliferation. Herein we show cyclin D1 abundance is increased > 30-fold in the stromal fibroblasts of patients with invasive breast cancer, associated with poor outcome. Cyclin D1 transformed hTERT human fibroblast to a cancer-associated fibroblast phenotype. Stromal fibroblast expression of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1Stroma) in vivo, enhanced breast epithelial cancer tumor growth, restrained apoptosis, and increased autophagy. Cyclin D1Stroma had profound effects on the breast tumor microenvironment increasing the recruitment of F4/80+ and CD11b+ macrophages and increasing …

High-Resolution Ikonos Satellite Imagery For Normalized Difference Vegetative Index-Related Assessment Applied To Land Clearance Studies, Cr Lavers, T Mason

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

High-resolution satellite imagery permits verification of human rights land clearance violations across international borders as a result of unstable regimes or socio-economic upheaval. Without direct access to these areas to validate allegations of human rights abuse, the use of remote sensing tools, techniques, and data is extremely important. Humanitarian assessment can benefit from software-based solutions, involving radiometrically calibrated normalized difference vegetation index and temporal change imagery. We discuss the introduction of a matrix filter approach for change detection studies to help assist rapid building detection over large search areas against a bright background to evaluate internally displaced people in the …

Interdisciplinary Researches And The Progress Of Human Societies In The New Millennium: Practical Experiences And Futuristic Options, Hany Khamis Abdo Aug 2017

Interdisciplinary Researches And The Progress Of Human Societies In The New Millennium: Practical Experiences And Futuristic Options, Hany Khamis Abdo

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Interdisciplinary Research is a fertile ground for researchers in the modern era, as is represents the importance in the study of various phenomena of society and its issues and complex problems that need to cross the barriers and cognitive limitations among social and natural sciences. It could be argued that after decades of increased specialization on the vertical level (any connection between the social sciences) and the horizontal level (any connection between the social sciences and natural sciences) it has become noticeable that there is an increasing trend towards financing projects and research programs that are trying to promote interdisciplinary …

Musings And Silences Of Chief Justice William Osgoode: Digest Marginalia About The Reception Of Imperial Law, G. Blaine Baker Aug 2017

Musings And Silences Of Chief Justice William Osgoode: Digest Marginalia About The Reception Of Imperial Law, G. Blaine Baker

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article focuses on musings and silences in the margins of Canadian Chief Justice William Osgoode’s late-eighteenth-century law library, to understand the role he assigned to Westminster-based imperial law in the transmission of British justice to the colonies. It concludes that this role was limited, mostly by Osgoode’s greater commitment of time and energy to legislative and executive branches of government than to the judiciary, and by his sometimes cavalier impatience with English courts and legal commentators.

Ethnomusicology: Issues And Possibilities, Majid Hamdoon Al Harthy Aug 2017

Ethnomusicology: Issues And Possibilities, Majid Hamdoon Al Harthy

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

This study investigates and analyzes the relationship between the development of the field of Ethnomusicology in United States, since the 1950s, and its predecessor known as Comparative Musicology, which emerged during the last two decades of 19th century Germany. Tracing the theoretical bases for Comparative Musicology, it becomes clear that certain fundamental issues caused researchers to distance themselves from the ideologies of traditional musics that, eventually, led to the emergence of Ethnomusicology. Furthermore, by exploring certain aspects of Comparative Musicology and Ethnomusicology, one cannot but notice the central role publications played in the establishment of both fields. However, unlike Comparative …

The Children Of The Cuban Revolution In The Diaspora: From Internationalism To Transnational And Cosmopolitan Imaginaries, Marelys Valencia Aug 2017

The Children Of The Cuban Revolution In The Diaspora: From Internationalism To Transnational And Cosmopolitan Imaginaries, Marelys Valencia

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation investigates the intermingling of discourses of migration and aesthetics within global market dynamics in the cultural production of late Cuban émigrés in the U.S. and Europe, to whom I refer as “the children of the revolution” —following Mette Louise Berg. I argue that this understudied migratory generation has replaced the diasporic teleology of return of the exile community with other imaginaries. As such, my dissertation sheds light not only on the varying ways of being Cuban in today’s world, but also on the different routes of the children of the revolution in the diaspora. By engaging in a …

Modulation Of Cellular Energetics By Galactose And Pioglitazone., David Grimm, Leonardo Altamirano, Sudip Paudel, Leah Welker, Mary E. Konkle, Nilay Chakraborty, Michael A. Menze

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The Warburg effect is ameliorated by culturing transformed cells in the presence of galactose instead of glucose as the primary carbon source. However, metabolic consequences that are in addition to sensitizing the cells to mitochondrial toxins may occur. As such, the screening of pharmaceutical agents against transformed cells while using galactose must be carefully evaluated. Pioglitazone is used in clinical applications to treat type-2 diabetes, but clearly has other off target effects. Human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) were cultured in glucose or galactosecontaining medium to investigate the role of pioglitazone on cellular bioenergetics employing calorimetry and respirometry. Compared to cells …

Rigor And Relevance: A Teacher Research Study On Using Young Adult Literature In Detracked Secondary English Language Arts Courses, Kathleen Colantonio-Yurko, Cody Miller, Jennifer Cheveallier

Journal of Practitioner Research

This article explores how three students who would not have qualified for honors-level curriculum under a tracked model performed in detracked English Language Arts (ELA) courses. Our teacher research study was guided by the following question: How can the incorporation of young adult literature (YAL) in a detracked ELA honors course affect the experiences of students who would not have qualified for honors curriculum under a tracked model? We found that the incorporation of YAL helped students explore diverse ideas and expanded their capacity to think, read, and write critically. This study has implications for broader conversations relating to detracking …

Muslim Work Ethics: Relationships With Religious Orientations And The “Perfect Man” (Ensan-E Kamel) In Managers And Staff In Iran, Nima Ghorbani, P. J. Watson, Maryam Karimpour, Zhuo Job Chen Aug 2017

Muslim Work Ethics: Relationships With Religious Orientations And The “Perfect Man” (Ensan-E Kamel) In Managers And Staff In Iran, Nima Ghorbani, P. J. Watson, Maryam Karimpour, Zhuo Job Chen

Publications

Weber’s association of a work ethic with Protestantism has been extended to religions, including Islam, more generally. Managers and staff in a bank and department store in Tehran responded to Muslim religiousness measures along with the multidimensional work ethics profile (MWEP). The MWEP is a 7-factor instrument that records Weber’s interpretation of work ethics. Intrinsic, extrinsic personal, and extrinsic cultural religious orientations predicted a higher work ethic. Two extrinsic cultural religious orientation factors exhibited especially strong connections with MWEP factors. The morality/ethics MWEP factor most consistently predicted Muslim commitments. Integrative self-knowledge and self-control served as empirical markers of an Iranian …

Transnational Images In A Global Frame: Film Festivals And Taiwan Cinema Through The Lens Of Hou Hsiao-Hsien And Tsai Ming-Liang, Peijen Beth Tsai

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the geopolitical and cultural dynamics between European and Taiwan cinema. I explore how art house cinema were circulated and received at major European festivals—Berlin, Cannes, and Venice—to question the role that film festivals play in influencing new cinematic styles for local, regional, and global consumption. Before Taiwan New Cinema became world renowned, films from Taiwan, despite sporadic forays into international festivals, had hitherto been prescribed as coming from a non-national nation (Chinese Taipei), or a nation without nationality (Taiwan, Province of China). If Taiwan cinema’s success in the film festival circuits is due to its proliferation of …

The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn Aug 2017

The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the use of physical evidence to prove the identity of witches in witchcraft trials from approximately 1300 to 1650 in Western Europe. Throughout this period, trial records for accused witches and witchcraft texts include references to Devil marks. According to contemporary texts, these were physical marks on witches, which were visible to the human eye. Doctors and midwives verified these marks upon examination of the accused witch’s body. In this instance, medical proof in the courtroom verified supernatural powers. This thesis will analyze the intersection between medical and religious beliefs in the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries to …

Adopting Organizational Learning Systems At The Field Level Of International Ngos, Rebecca Beauregard Aug 2017

Adopting Organizational Learning Systems At The Field Level Of International Ngos, Rebecca Beauregard

Capstone Collection

An increased push for accountability in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has led to the imperative for what was previously an internal management practice widely-utilized in the private sector: organizational learning. Learning initiatives support organizations to utilize resources more effectively and to reach their objectives with adaptive strategies.

In this paper, I explore the many components belonging to the organizational learning umbrella term from multiple disciplines, grounding my inquiry in the context of international NGOs. The findings from my qualitative research highlight aspects of learning and knowledge management in addition to organizational change and culture; to provide a comprehensive understanding of organizational …

Building Blocks Of A National Style: An Examination Of Topics And Gestures In Nineteenth-Century American Music As Exemplified In Scott Joplin’S Treemonisha, Elisabet Omarene De Vallee

Dissertations

Even though America’s musical elite undertook a veritable boycott of American talent during the nineteenth century, efforts to define concert life along Germanic lines did not prevent the development of a distinctly American sound. The groundwork was laid in the first half of the century in folk songs, national airs, and popular tunes from minstrel shows. It came to fruition after the Civil War, and by the 1920s, all of the elements were in place for an easily recognizable “American Style.” The development of musical topics to evoke the idea of “American” was essential in establishing this style. Most topical …
