Genre And Register Variation: Academic Conference Presentations In Spanish In The United States, Carolina Viera Jan 2017

Genre And Register Variation: Academic Conference Presentations In Spanish In The United States, Carolina Viera

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conference presentations (CPs) are instrumental in the academic sphere, since they provide a space in which academics disseminate their ongoing research, interact with their colleagues, and position themselves in their professional community (Swales 2004; Ventola, Shalom & Thompson 2002; Rowley-Jolivet & Carter-Thomas 2005). Unique to the academic community of Hispanic studies in the United States is the fact that texts can be produced either in English or Spanish, therefore, both languages are promoted as a viable means of academic communication. Additionally, scholars who deliver presentations in Spanish in the United States speak a wide array of Spanish dialects, come from …

The Relationship Between Orientation To The U.S. Culture And Affect Among Chinese International Students, Jiquan Lin Jan 2017

The Relationship Between Orientation To The U.S. Culture And Affect Among Chinese International Students, Jiquan Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emerging literature suggests that ideal/desired emotions vs. actual emotions represent an important aspect of subjective emotional experiences that may be particularly important for cross-cultural research, as culture may influence the subjective experience of how individuals value certain emotions and to what extent they actually experience them. The current research conducts two studies to examine cultural differences in ideal and actual affect, and to test its association with acculturation and depressed mood within a sample of Chinese international students. Specifically, Study 1 recruited 152 Chinese international college students and 108 U.S. college students to test differences in their ideal and actual …

Teacher Self-Identity: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Lives Of Teachers And The Influences On Their Interactions With Students, Hannah Marie Reid Jan 2017

Teacher Self-Identity: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Lives Of Teachers And The Influences On Their Interactions With Students, Hannah Marie Reid

ETD Archive

New teachers are supported extensively while participating in teacher training programs and during the first years of teaching. During this time, there are opportunities for the new teacher to explore their self-identity and determine how they will interact with students in the classroom. As teachers enter the later years of their careers and are considered experienced, they are forced to contend with changing political and societal factors that influence their experiences around teaching in the classroom, often times without the extensive support that is provided for the teachers in their first years. Through a lens of social constructivism, narrative inquiry …

An Investigation Into How Degree Of Distraction With Mobile Device Users Influences Attention To Detail, Jeffery Craig Allen Jan 2017

An Investigation Into How Degree Of Distraction With Mobile Device Users Influences Attention To Detail, Jeffery Craig Allen

ETD Archive

Previous research has indicated that the overuse of mobile devices by youths, especially at work or in class, can be disruptive to others, and be detrimental to the individual engaged in this activity in regards to task performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between distraction due to use of mobile devices, while engaged in a task, and subsequent recall of details being presented during exposure to a stimulus.

Due to the ubiquitous and pervasive nature of mobile devices in today's youth culture, and in our society as a whole, understanding and explaining what personality types …

Separation Scenes, Ann C. Christensen Jan 2017

Separation Scenes, Ann C. Christensen

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This analysis of five exemplary domestic plays—the anonymous Arden of Faversham and A Warning for Fair Women (1590s), Thomas Heywood’s A Woman Killed with Kindness (1607), Thomas Middleton’s Women Beware Women (ca. 1613), and Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary, or The Seaman’s Honest Wife (1632)—offers a new approach to the emerging ideology of the private and public, or what Ann C. Christensen terms “the tragedy of the separate spheres.” Feminist scholarship has identified the fruitful gaps between theories and practices of household government in early modern Europe, while work on the global Renaissance attends to commercial …

Screening The System, Martha Louise Deutscher Jan 2017

Screening The System, Martha Louise Deutscher

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The Personnel Security Clearance System—the process by which the federal government incorporates individuals into secret national-security work—is flawed. After twenty-three years of federal service, Martha Louise Deutscher explores the current system and the amount of power afforded to the state in contrast to that afforded to those who serve it.

Deutscher’s timely examination of the U.S. screening system shows how security clearance practices, including everything from background checks and fingerprinting to urinalysis and the polygraph, shape and transform those individuals who are subject to them. By bringing participants’ testimonies to light, Deutscher looks at the efficacy of various practices while …

At The First Table, Jodi Campbell Jan 2017

At The First Table, Jodi Campbell

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Research on European food culture has expanded substantially in recent years, telling us more about food preparation, ingredients, feasting and fasting rituals, and the social and cultural connotations of food.

At the First Table demonstrates the ways in which early modern Spaniards used food as a mechanism for the performance of social identity. People perceived themselves and others as belonging to clearly defined categories of gender, status, age, occupation, and religion, and each of these categories carried certain assumptions about proper behavior and appropriate relationships with others. Food choices and dining customs were effective and visible ways of displaying these …

The Other Exchange, Denys Van Renen Jan 2017

The Other Exchange, Denys Van Renen

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Prompted by commercial and imperial expansion such as the creation of the Bank of England in 1694 and the publication and circulation of Ben Jonson’s The Staple of News in 1626, rapidly changing cultural, economic, and political realities in early modern England generated a paradigmatic shift in class awareness. Denys Van Renen’s The Other Exchange demonstrates how middle-class consciousness not only emerged in opposition to the lived and perceived abuses of the aristocratic elite but also was fostered by the economic and sociocultural influence of women and lower-class urban communities.

Van Renen contends that, fascinated by the intellectual and cultural …

Yearning To Labor, John P. Murphy Jan 2017

Yearning To Labor, John P. Murphy

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In the first decade of the twenty-first century, France underwent a particularly turbulent period during which urban riots in 2005 and labor protests in 2006 galvanized people across the country and brought the question of youth unemployment among its poorer, multiethnic outer cities into the national spotlight.

Drawing on more than a year of ethnographic field research in the housing projects of the French city of Limoges, Yearning to Labor chronicles the everyday struggles of a group of young people as they confront unemployment at more than triple the national rate—and the crushing despair it engenders. Against the background of …

Disability Studies And The Environmental Humanities, Sarah Jaquette Ray, Jay Sibara Jan 2017

Disability Studies And The Environmental Humanities, Sarah Jaquette Ray, Jay Sibara

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Although scholars in the environmental humanities have been exploring the dichotomy between “wild” and “built” environments for several years, few have focused on the field of disability studies, a discipline that enlists the contingency between environments and bodies as a foundation of its scholarship. On the other hand, scholars in disability studies have demonstrated the ways in which the built environment privileges some bodies and minds over others, yet they have rarely examined the ways in which toxic environments engender chronic illness and disability or how environmental illnesses disrupt dominant paradigms for scrutinizing “disability.”

Designed as a reader for undergraduate …

Indigenous Media And Political Imaginaries In Contemporary Bolivia, Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal Jan 2017

Indigenous Media And Political Imaginaries In Contemporary Bolivia, Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal examines the political dimension of indigenous media production and distribution as a means by which indigenous organizations articulate new claims on national politics in Bolivia, a country experiencing one of the most notable cases of social mobilization and indigenous-based constitutional transformation in contemporary Latin America. Based on fieldwork in Bolivia from 2005 to 2007, Zamorano Villarreal details how grassroots indigenous media production has been instrumental to indigenous political demands for a Constituent Assembly and for implementing the new constitution within Evo Morales controversial administration.

On a day-to-day basis, Zamorano Villarreal witnessed the myriad processes by which Bolivia’s …

Salish Blankets, Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard Joseph Jan 2017

Salish Blankets, Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard Joseph

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Salish Blankets presents a new perspective on Salish weaving through technical and anthropological lenses. Worn as ceremonial robes, the blankets are complex objects said to preexist in the supernatural realm and made manifest in the natural world through ancestral guidance. The blankets are protective garments that at times of great life changes—birth, marriage, death—offer emotional strength and mental focus. A blanket can help establish the owner’s standing in the community and demonstrate a weaver’s technical expertise and artistic vision. The object, the maker, the wearer, and the community are bound and transformed through the creation and use of the blanket. …

Weird Propaganda: Texts Of The Black Power And Women’S Liberation Movements, Marie Buck Jan 2017

Weird Propaganda: Texts Of The Black Power And Women’S Liberation Movements, Marie Buck

Wayne State University Dissertations

“Weird Propaganda: Texts of the Black Power and Women’s Liberation Movements” examines texts of the Black Power and Women’s Liberation Movements: the early Black Arts Movement anthology For Malcolm; the now-canonical texts Our Bodies, Ourselves; The Black Woman; and Sisterhood Is Powerful; a number of pamphlets and other small press works; and the Black Panthers’ newspaper. This project argues that writers and activists used senses of the uncanny, along with elements of science fiction and fantasy, to negotiate the day-to-day uncertainties of political organizing and, more broadly, political hope. The texts examined here convey particular political views in an explict …

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Tocotrienols In Nsclc, Lichchavi Raj Raj Jan 2017

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Tocotrienols In Nsclc, Lichchavi Raj Raj

Wayne State University Dissertations

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death among cancers, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for 80-85% of all lung cancers and a five-year survival rate of 5 % at stage IIIB. Delta-tocotrienol (δT) including other tocotrienol isomers has been shown to exhibit anti-tumor activity via inhibition of different signaling pathways in tumors including NSCLC. Previously we reported that δT reduced cell invasion via inhibition of the Notch-1 and NF-κb pathway.

Matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) dependent cell migration and invasion are key processes in cancer metastasis. Hence, its suppression is a promising strategy for cancer therapeutics. …

Following In The Footprints: Influence Of Celebrities To Generate Community College Search, Kristy Tucciarone Jan 2017

Following In The Footprints: Influence Of Celebrities To Generate Community College Search, Kristy Tucciarone

Faculty Scholarship

This study explores how celebrity endorsements can influence prospective students' interest in community colleges, particularly during the college search phase. Despite offering significant educational and financial advantages, community colleges often struggle with a public image that suggests inferiority to four-year institutions. This research investigates whether leveraging the fame and relatability of celebrity alumni can help overcome this perception and increase student engagement.

Using a qualitative focus group method, the study surveyed 67 former community college students from various U.S. states. Participants discussed their awareness of celebrity endorsements, preferred media for consuming such content, and the potential effectiveness of celebrities as …

Blood, Sweat, And Tears: A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Gendered Power Of Bodily Fluid In Fairy Tales, Mikayla Gleason Jan 2017

Blood, Sweat, And Tears: A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Gendered Power Of Bodily Fluid In Fairy Tales, Mikayla Gleason

Theses & ETDs

This thesis develops the idea that the bodily fluid shown in fairy tales displays extraordinary powers in direct correlation to the gender of the character from which they come as a means of presenting cultural ideas and stereotypes of masculinity and femininity. Often ignored by folklore researchers in favor of better known topics like color symbolism, this motif offers readers a deeper understanding of not only the tales themselves, but the societies from which they come. Based on the scholarly-asserted principle that fairy tales are meant to be used as teaching devices, analyses of both history and religion in specific …

An Investigation Into Endophytic Bacterial Populations In Undifferentiated And Newly Differentiated Organ Tissues Of Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Alexander Bowman Jan 2017

An Investigation Into Endophytic Bacterial Populations In Undifferentiated And Newly Differentiated Organ Tissues Of Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Alexander Bowman

Theses & ETDs

Endophytes consist of either bacterial or fungal populations that exist in the tissues of a plant, and have been discovered in all plants that have been tested. They are microorganisms that live inside the host tissue and can contribute to the growth and survivability of plant species by providing certain hormones or resources. Research has shown that different tissues of plants contain unique endophytic bacterial populations. In the present study, meristematic (unspecialized) tissue was taken from store-bought cauliflower and allowed to differentiate (or specialize) in culture. The explants produced several different organs without the need for supplemental hormones. Samples from …

The Stock Imagery Of Crisis: Incorporation As Methodology And Analytical Tool In Contemporary Visual Culture, Francisco Andres Perez Jan 2017

The Stock Imagery Of Crisis: Incorporation As Methodology And Analytical Tool In Contemporary Visual Culture, Francisco Andres Perez

Theses & ETDs

In 1979 Dick Hebdige used the phrase “the rhetoric of crisis” to describe the visual language of the British punk scene. According to Hebdige, punk was a desperate attempt to assert, contrary to the hegemony of Pop, the individual’s role in the shaping of their own reality. In today’s cultural landscape this effort appears to have been in vain as the punk style is seen on runways and red carpets, the ultimate mechanisms for the filtering of objects into the mainstream. Moreover, this narrative seems to be repeated several times a year as new subcultural phenomena are constantly incorporated into …

Confuciansim And Korean Dramas: How Cultural And Social Proximity, Hybridization Of Modernity And Tradition, And Dissimilar Confucian Trajectories Affect Importation Rates Of Korean Broadcasting Programs Between Japan And China, Brianna Jackson

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

On April 3, 2004, five thousand Japanese citizens arrived at Haneda, Tokyo Airport to meet famous Korean actor Bae Yong Joon: the male love interest in the Korean drama Winter Sonata (Lee 12). Commonly referred to as Yon-sama (roughly translated to “Prince Yon”), Bae Yong Joon quickly amassed a fanbase of love-struck, middle-aged Japanese women who fell in love with his character. Never before had the relationship between Japan and South Korea been as amicable as it had when Bae made his debut. Not even the 2002 jointly hosted World Cup had succeeded in easing tensions between the two neighboring …

Cultural Appropriation And The Plains' Indian Headdress, Marisa Wood Jan 2017

Cultural Appropriation And The Plains' Indian Headdress, Marisa Wood

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

“Cultural appropriation” can be defined as the borrowing from someone else’s culture without their permission and without acknowledgement to the victim culture’s past. Recently there has been a conversation taking place between Native American communities and non-Indian communities over cases of cultural appropriation, specifically the misuse of the Plains’ Indian headdress, which Natives compare to the Medal of Honor. The “hipster subculture”, which can be defined as a generally pro-consumerist, anti-capitalist group of middle-to-upper class non-Indian Americans, has selectively appropriated aspects of many minority cultures; this action has heavily trended toward aspects of Native American culture. As a result, Native …

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Buffy Summers goes from urban Los Angeles to Sunnydale, California after she is expelled from her previous high school on the grounds of an assortment of Slayer-related incidents. Chosen as the Slayer, Buffy is fated to fight against the forces of darkness, although this responsibility is not always conducive to leading the life of an average teenage girl. Upon moving to Sunnydale, Buffy quickly learns that Sunnydale High School sits directly above a “Hellmouth,” a hub for demon activity. Specifically, the entrance to the Hellmouth is located directly beneath the Sunnydale High School library, home to a curious collection of …

Silences Between Jewishness And Indigeneity In Eduardo Halfon's Mañana Nunca Lo Hablamos, Stephanie Pridgeon Jan 2017

Silences Between Jewishness And Indigeneity In Eduardo Halfon's Mañana Nunca Lo Hablamos, Stephanie Pridgeon

All Faculty Scholarship

This article analyzes Eduardo Halfon's Mañana nunca lo hablamos (2011) arguing that Hal/on offers a retrospective view of Guatemala's Civil War ("la violencia") from a Jewish perspective that is distinct from an indigenous perspective. Nonetheless, this study shows to what extent Halfon's work posits the possibility of an affective identification between Jews and indigenous populations in the context of the violent political conflict The conclusion maintains that the work offers new possibilities for thinking through the relationship between ethnicity and politics, a conceptual relationship that until now has been a critical lacuna within analyses of Jewish Latin American cultural productions.

"Fragmegration" Of Identity In Laurent Cantet's Ressources Humaines And L'Emploi Du Temps, Peter Schulman Jan 2017

"Fragmegration" Of Identity In Laurent Cantet's Ressources Humaines And L'Emploi Du Temps, Peter Schulman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

As James Rosenau has written, localization and globalization came crashing together at the turn of the 20th century in a type of oxymoronic chaos he labels "fragmegration" that characterizes the confusion people have as to their role in society. It is this identity confusion that Laurent Cantet portrays in his landmark films Ressources humaines (1999) and L'emploi du temps (2001). Cantet's protagonists seek their place in society as they cope with the sudden destabilization of their local, national, and globalized identities.

This research examined Korean sport fans’ perceptions and consumption of United States-based sport. Spectators at two professional Korean Baseball Organization games completed a questionnaire exploring their understanding of sport in the United States and their media consumption habits, as well as their impression of Korean athletes participating in United States-based sport organizations. More than 75% of the respondents consumed United States-based sport, with the primary reason of following Korean players in professional leagues. U.S. sport culture was thought to be more business-oriented, with more financial investment, more talented athletes, and larger fan bases. These beliefs about U.S.-based sport are primary …

A Case Study Of Self-Representation On Twitter: A Gender Analysis Of How Student-Athletes Portray Themselves, Bo Li, Sarah Stokowski, Stephen W. Dittmore, John R. Malmo, David T. Rolfe

Global Sport Business Journal

Throughout sports coverage, mass media has been blamed for masculine hegemony, which often includes a lack of exposure regarding female sports and over emphasizing “femininity.” The emergence of social media provides athletes the opportunities to portray themselves, increase their brand equity, and directly interact with other sport media consumers. Informed by self-presentation theory, this case study is an attempt to investigate whether gender difference exists between female and male student-athletes in term of the way they portray themselves on Twitter. The profiles, background pictures, bibliographies and the content of tweets from 100 NCAA Division I student-athletes’ Twitter accounts were selected …
