Adding A New Dimension To The Development Of Anti-Pancreatic Cancer Agent Dcm-Mj-I-21: 3d Cell Culture Studies, Milica Markovic Jan 2017

Adding A New Dimension To The Development Of Anti-Pancreatic Cancer Agent Dcm-Mj-I-21: 3d Cell Culture Studies, Milica Markovic

Honors Thesis Collection

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and lethal solid malignancies with more than 50,000 patients in 2016 and <5% 5-year survival rate. It owes aggressiveness in part to the unusual ability of cells to survive under nutrient deprivation for prolonged periods of time. The mechanisms underlying this property have recently become valuable biochemical targets for the potential treatment of pancreatic cancer. Angelmarin (isolated from a medicinal plant, Angelica pubescens) exhibits preferential cytotoxicity to pancreatic cancer cells under nutrient deprivation. Our lab has synthesized multiple coumarin-based derivatives of Angelmarin, identifying DCM-MJ-I-21 as the current lead, with LC50 value of 4μM under nutrient deprivation and no activity in the presence of nutrients. This compound has been well characterized in 2D cell culture in vitro assays, however, these data may not be predictive of its behavior in vivo due to multiple differences between the 3D in vivo environment, …

The Power Of Nonverbal Communication, Samantha Lawrence Jan 2017

The Power Of Nonverbal Communication, Samantha Lawrence

Integrated Studies

“Donald Sessions said, “Connection even for a brief moment produces the powerful enchantment of presence,” (Baumgardner, 2017). The connection an individual makes with one another is through communication; whether it is verbal or nonverbal. A review of current journals on the effects nonverbal communication has on religion, workplace interactions, peer friendships, and family relationships was conducted. During the review it was found nonverbal communication makes an impact on the type of individuals in another’s life whether it is consciously or unconsciously done. It was discovered individuals leave a lasting impression with their audience and they do so with the type …

It Follows: Precarity, Thanatopolitics, And The Ambient Horror Film, Casey Ryan Kelly Jan 2017

It Follows: Precarity, Thanatopolitics, And The Ambient Horror Film, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In the 2014 horror film It Follows, a teenage woman is terrorized by a fatal curse that passes from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. The subject of the curse is relentlessly pursued by vacant-minded assassins that take the form of friends, loved ones, and strangers. The film is set near the infamous dividing line of Detroit’s 8 Mile Road, between what remains of the suburban working-class and the sacrifice zone of post-industrial urban triage. I argue that It Follows confronts audiences with the spectral manifestation of precarity: the deliberate and unequal redistribution of human fragility to populations who …

Art Integration In Urban Elementary Schools: Can It Improve Student Learning Outcomes In Other Subject Areas?, Julie Flynn Jan 2017

Art Integration In Urban Elementary Schools: Can It Improve Student Learning Outcomes In Other Subject Areas?, Julie Flynn

Journal of Applied and Educational Research (2017-2019)

Teachers and students nationwide are struggling to address the disparity in academic achievement between students in urban, socioeconomically underprivileged and racially segregated school districts, and their more affluent, white, suburban counterparts. Poorer urban schools are also less likely to have adequate funding and support for arts programs. Educators must thus look outside of traditional learning models and explore all opportunities to engage their students and create learning opportunities. Arts integration has been shown to improve student attitudes and engagement, along with a potential to “transfer” skills and knowledge to other subject areas. This study sought to examine whether the integration …

Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists And Emerson's Challenge, Johannes Voelz Jan 2017

Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists And Emerson's Challenge, Johannes Voelz

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

Johannes Voelz offers a critique of the New Americanists through a stimulating and original reexamination of the iconic figure of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Voelz argues against the prevailing tendency among Americanists to see Emerson as the product of an “all-pervasive scope of cultural power.” Instead he shows Emerson’s philosophy to be a deft response to the requirements of lecturing professionally at the newly built lyceums around the country. Voelz brings to light a fascinating organic relationship between Emerson’s dynamic style of thinking and the uplifting experience demanded by his public. This need for an audience-directed philosophy, the …

Examining The Interaction Of Mathematical Abilities And Mathematical Memory: A Study Of Problem-Solving Activity Of High-Achieving Swedish Upper Secondary Students, Attila Szabo, Paul Andrews Jan 2017

Examining The Interaction Of Mathematical Abilities And Mathematical Memory: A Study Of Problem-Solving Activity Of High-Achieving Swedish Upper Secondary Students, Attila Szabo, Paul Andrews

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper we investigate the abilities that six high-achieving Swedish upper secondary students demonstrate when solving challenging, non-routine mathematical problems. Data, which were derived from clinical interviews, were analysed against an adaptation of the framework developed by the Soviet psychologist Vadim Krutetskii (1976). Analyses showed that when solving problems students pass through three phases, here called orientation, processing and checking, during which students exhibited particular forms of ability. In particular, the mathematical memory was principally observed in the orientation phase, playing a crucial role in the ways in which students’ selected their problem-solving methods; where these methods failed to …

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin Jan 2017

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin

English Faculty Publications

This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …

The Evolution Of Destination Branding: A Review Of Branding Literature In Tourism, Marta Almeyda-Ibáñez, Babu P. George Jan 2017

The Evolution Of Destination Branding: A Review Of Branding Literature In Tourism, Marta Almeyda-Ibáñez, Babu P. George

Management Faculty Publications

Tourism is a promise and destinations communicate the credibility of that promise by means of destination brands. Branding has become a key tool for tourism destinations to make explicit the complexity of experiences to be expected by tourists visiting a destination. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of various issues associated with tourism destination branding. It brings together a wide range of debates in the generic marketing literature, places them alongside the nuances of tourism, and thereby identifies unique challenges of branding in tourism destination contexts. Finally, a case study of USP based national tourism branding campaigns in the …

Patient Safety In The Ambulatory Oncology Environment: A Teamstepps® Journey, Tammi Phelps Hick Jan 2017

Patient Safety In The Ambulatory Oncology Environment: A Teamstepps® Journey, Tammi Phelps Hick

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Problem: Children have reported that pain and anxiety were the most difficult part of hospitalization, and under treatment of pain and anxiety can have short and long term effects on health outcomes. Most healthcare professionals recognize a link between emotional health and physical health, but this may be especially true for pediatric patients who may not be able to marshal adequate coping skills due to their developmental age. Providing age appropriate alternatives, such as distraction therapy, may result in less invasive treatments for pediatric patients. Distraction therapy is an effective non-pharmacological intervention that is often under-utilized in the acute care …

Engaging Health Insurers In The War On Prescription Painkillers, Valarie K. Blake Jan 2017

Engaging Health Insurers In The War On Prescription Painkillers, Valarie K. Blake

Scholarly Works

While insurers have both the power and the motivation to curb the practice of harmful opioid prescribing, they may go about it in ways that could be counter-productive to larger public health goals. After all, insurers have historically discriminated against addiction like any other condition that leads to costly healthcare consumption. In the past, insurers have avoided enrolling addicted insureds and have limited rehabilitation services. To address this epidemic, insurers might engage in ways that could harm third parties. For example, to the extent they are permitted, insurers might avoid addicted enrollees altogether, or might limit coverage of addiction treatments …

The Cultural Translation Of Battlers Poetry (Dagong Shige), Maghiel Van Crevel Jan 2017

The Cultural Translation Of Battlers Poetry (Dagong Shige), Maghiel Van Crevel

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Contemporary mainland-Chinese poetry displays a great deal of diversity and dynamism. Battlers poetry (dagong shige)—writing by members of the underclass of domestic migrant workers—is a relatively recent arrival. This essay delves into the discourse surrounding battlers poetry and its interactions with other poetry “departments,” particularly that of avant-garde poetry. It does so from the perspective of cultural translation. I argue that this is especially helpful for understanding the dynamics of battlers poetry, and of “poetry” at large as a discursive space in China today. The essay offers a discussion of translated people, texts in transit, commentary as conflict …

Toasting México In The American West: Brindis Poems And Political Loyalties Of Women's Mexican Patriotic Clubs, Vanessa O. Perez Jan 2017

Toasting México In The American West: Brindis Poems And Political Loyalties Of Women's Mexican Patriotic Clubs, Vanessa O. Perez

English Faculty Publications

Brindis poems were popular in the nineteenth century. Accompanied by the raise of a glass, their verses were meant to celebrate a person or event. Only two decades after the Mexican-American War, Latinas/os living in the newly annexed territories of the American West found themselves using the brindis genre to declare their loyalties to Mexico against a new invader, France. Among the most ardent supporters of the Mexican army's fight against French imperialism were lower and middle-class Latinas who formed Mexican patriotic clubs exclusively for women in California and Nevada. This article examines one brindis series recited by women of …

  1. Forest pests drive tree mortality through disruption of functional traits linked to nutrient acquisition, growth and reproduction. The impacts of attack by individual or multiple above‐ground herbivores on root functional traits critical to tree health have received little attention. This is especially true for exotic herbivores, organisms often found in disturbed forests.
  2. We excavated whole‐root systems from eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) individuals experimentally infested with hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA: Adelges tsugae) and elongate hemlock scale (EHS: Fiorina externa) individually, or in combination, for periods of 2 and 4 years. Below‐ground root biomass, functional traits and storage …

Abundant Exotics And Cavalier Crafting: Obsidian Use And Emerging Complexity In The Northern Lake Titicaca Basin, Elizabeth A. Klarich, Abigail Levine, Carol Schultze Jan 2017

Abundant Exotics And Cavalier Crafting: Obsidian Use And Emerging Complexity In The Northern Lake Titicaca Basin, Elizabeth A. Klarich, Abigail Levine, Carol Schultze

Anthropology: Faculty Books

Book Abstract:

Using case studies from around the globe—including Mesoamerica, North and South America, Africa, China, and the Greco-Roman world—and across multiple time periods, the authors in this volume make the case that abundance provides an essential explanatory perspective on ancient peoples’ choices and activities. Economists frequently focus on scarcity as a driving principle in the development of social and economic hierarchies, yet focusing on plenitude enables the understanding of a range of cohesive behaviors that were equally important for the development of social complexity.

Our earliest human ancestors were highly mobile hunter-gatherers who sought out places that provided ample …

Substantive And Procedural Silence, Erin Sheley Jan 2017

Substantive And Procedural Silence, Erin Sheley

Tennessee Law Review

Empirical work shows that perceptions of the procedural fairness of the criminal justice system turns on whether it gives individuals and communities a "voice," or a forum in which to tell their stories. If the system imposes unwanted silence on a party its legitimacy in the eyes of the public decreases. Despite the extensive literature on the many specific applications of silence in the justice system, no attempt has yet been made to break down the relationship between the victim's silence and the defendant's across the disparate doctrines of criminal law, or the importance of these interconnections to the expressive …

Introduction To German Ecocriticism In The Anthropocene, Caroline Schaumann, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2017

Introduction To German Ecocriticism In The Anthropocene, Caroline Schaumann, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

How do we approach, read, discuss, and teach German literature in light of the transnational and global environmental problems and crises caused by human activities? In what way does the current geological era of the Anthropocene marked by traceable human impact across the globe lead us to reflect on the role and interconnectedness of human and non-human forces? Since human activities and human cultures have caused so many of the current ecological problems, how can scholars address broad-scale interdisciplinary problems with attention to both cultural and scientific knowledge? What is the role of the humanities in this inextricably nature-culture mix …

Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher Jan 2017

Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher

Library Faculty Research

A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.”1 This is true of the archives and libraries of all denominations; they are the repositories of a church’s history and thus a vital resource for understanding a church’s future. As such, it is essential that the official repositories of an organized religion, such as Catholic diocesan archives, be accessible to scholarly researchers, genealogists, members of the faith, and other …

A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey Jan 2017

A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey

Library Faculty and Staff papers

This chapter describes an innovative implementation of the use of iPad kiosks to blur the lines between physical and virtual library collections. Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library + Commons began lending iPads to students, faculty, and staff in 2012. In addition to lending the devices, library staff dedicated time to learning about both task-based and subject-based mobile applications that would be of use to our community. A small group of library staff tested, discussed, and vetted a variety of apps that would be deployed on the iPads to be lent out. Efforts were made to promote the use and discovery …

The Retro-Futurism Of Cuteness, Jennifer E. Boyle, Wan-Chuan Kao Jan 2017

The Retro-Futurism Of Cuteness, Jennifer E. Boyle, Wan-Chuan Kao

CCU Faculty Books

Is it possible to conceive of a Hello Kitty Middle Ages or a Tickle Me Elmo Renaissance? The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first reference to “cute” in the sense of “attractive, pretty, charming” to 1834. More recently, Sianne Ngai has offered a critical overview of the cuteness of the twentieth-century avant-garde within the context of consumer culture. But if cuteness can get under the skin, what kinds of surfaces does it best infiltrate, particularly in the framework of historical forms, events, and objects that traditionally have been read as emergences around “big” aesthetics of formal symmetries, high affects, and …

Boardwalk Empire, Shell Shock And The Great War: The Characters Of Militarism, Brion White Jan 2017

Boardwalk Empire, Shell Shock And The Great War: The Characters Of Militarism, Brion White

Communication Studies Faculty Works

White examines the HBO drama ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and the show’s depiction of WWI veterans Jimmy Darmody and Richard Harrow, the trials and tribulations of dealing with the fallout of shell shock, the psychological precursor to modern day PTSD. The drama provided two compelling characters who attempted to live 'normal' lives, but instead chose a life of crime and mobster violence in an effort to readjust to society. In that attempt, both struggled with what the war meant and if they ever really left the war behind.

Advancing Sylvia Wynter's Reimagination Of The Human And Counter-Poetics: A Critique Of Contemporary Western Science Discourse In Cosmos—A Spacetime Odyssey, With Host Neil Degrasse Tyson, Claire E. Slattery-Quintanilla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the entanglements of "modernity/coloniality," Western conceptualizations of time and space, and questions of the "human" as they are situated in contemporary Western science discourse and thought. Through a textual analysis of the 2014 science television documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey presented by famous black astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, I argue Tyson refuses to discuss race as it relates to Western science on three levels in Cosmos: the racialized logic inherent in Western science, the sociohistorical relationship between European colonial racial subjugation and the emergence of contemporary Western science, and Tyson's experience as a black man …

"Revolution In Religious Language": The Relevance Of Julia Kristeva's Theory Of 'Signifiance' For Theology, Timothy O. Inman Jan 2017

"Revolution In Religious Language": The Relevance Of Julia Kristeva's Theory Of 'Signifiance' For Theology, Timothy O. Inman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation applies Julia Kristeva's theory of revolution in the practice of signifiance to religious discourse. In particular, it argues that the salient features of signifiance are present and active in religious speech as well as poetic language, the subject of Kristeva's doctoral thesis Revolution in Poetic Language. Signifiance describes the process in which meaning is produced in linguistic utterance, and its intentional practice is subversive not only in terms of language but culture in general.

Emirati Identity As An Antecedent Of Fairness Perceptions And Behavior, Stijn Decoster, Maja Graso, Emily David, Jeroen Camps Jan 2017

Emirati Identity As An Antecedent Of Fairness Perceptions And Behavior, Stijn Decoster, Maja Graso, Emily David, Jeroen Camps

Working papers

The unprecedented ease of global mobility allows individuals to transcend national boundaries and develop intimate understanding of cultures other than their own. Anecdotally, those individuals might be expatriates on international assignments, citizens who are minorities in their own countries (e.g., United Arab Emirates), or colloquial third culture kids – perpetual global nomads who might ascribe little value to their identity as citizens of their own passport country. Academically, those individuals can be termed as bicultural or cultural hybrids, nomenclature which brings attention to this fusion of multiple identities. The resulting internalization of values, attitudes, and perceptions emerging from dynamic cultural …
