Countries emerging from civil conflict in the developing world face numerous challenges that hinder reconstruction and peace building. These hurdles, many of which existed before the war and may have contributed to the civil strife, include poverty, unequal distribution of political and economic power, land disputes and exploitation or exclusion of groups on social, cultural, tribal or religious bases. Liberia emerged from 14 years of conflict in 2003 urgently needing to address many of these concerns, in particular the burgeoning number of land disputes and the looming threat they posed to peace, security and national reconstruction. A joint effort by …

Youth Incarceration, Health, And Length Of Stay, Thalia Gonzalez Jan 2017

Youth Incarceration, Health, And Length Of Stay, Thalia Gonzalez

Faculty Scholarship

For youth from marginalized communities, the pathway into the juvenile justice system occurs against a backdrop of disproportionately high levels of stress, complex trauma, and adverse childhood experiences. Despite overall reductions in the percentage of youth in confinement from recent state-level reforms, the lengths of stay for many youth often exceed evidence-based timelines, as well as a state’s own guidelines and criteria. This occurs despite a large and growing body of empirical research that documents the health status of system-involved youth and the association between incarceration during adolescence and the range of subsequent health and mental health outcomes in adulthood. …

Papillary Craniopharyngioma: A Clinicopathologic Study Of A Rare Entity From A Major Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Muhammad Usman Tariq, Nasir Ud Din, Zubair Ahmad, Wasim Memon Jan 2017

Papillary Craniopharyngioma: A Clinicopathologic Study Of A Rare Entity From A Major Tertiary Care Center In Pakistan, Muhammad Usman Tariq, Nasir Ud Din, Zubair Ahmad, Wasim Memon

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Papillary craniopharyngioma (PCP) are uncommon variants of craniopharyngiomas (CP), which are benign epithelial neoplasms of the sellar and suprasellar region. Histologically, PCPs are typically composed of well-differentiated stratified squamous epithelium; however, focal variations are not uncommon. A distinction from other lesions of the region, despite being difficult to achieve due to the overlapping radiological and clinical features, is important for adequate treatment to be administered.
Objective: Our aim was to study the clinical and histological features of PCP with emphasis on features that are helpful in its distinction from other lesions that are similar in appearance.
Materials and Methods: …

Bibliotheca: The Road To Wisdom, Simjith V, Vasudevan T.M Jan 2017

Bibliotheca: The Road To Wisdom, Simjith V, Vasudevan T.M

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There is a path which takes any creative intellect from the world of information to that of wisdom through the world of knowledge. This path for creative realization is indeed resonant with the 'Upanishadic' method of spiritual realization, i.e. the transformative ideology of the East, consisting of the phases of 'Sravana', 'Manana', and 'Nididhyasana' in that order, with the outcome of the phases being Information, Knowledge and Wisdom respectively. This has been seen to be true in the case of legendary literary work and unparalleled epic of the East, 'Mahabharata', inspired the master writer of India, MT Vasudevan Nair in …

Predictors Of Information Retrieval Effectiveness Among Library And Information Science Undergraduates In Kwara State Universities, Adeyinka Tella Jan 2017

Predictors Of Information Retrieval Effectiveness Among Library And Information Science Undergraduates In Kwara State Universities, Adeyinka Tella

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In this information age, it is observed that, as the quantity of information grows the ability of individuals to search and retrieve the needed information decreases in a dramatically manner, which implies that our information retrieval activity lacks effectiveness. It assumed that some factors should be responsible; however, there is no empirical evidence that predict or determine information retrieval effectiveness. This study examined predictors of information retrieval effectiveness among Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduate students in universities in Kwara State, Nigeria; considered correlation among the predictors of information retrieval effectiveness, identify the best predictive factor of information retrieval effectiveness, …

Information Asymmetry Between Microfinance Banks And Poor Women In Oyo State, Nigeria: A Critical Examination, Adesoji Tayo, Yacob Haliso, Omolara Tayo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Nigeria like any other developing country is facing the problems of poverty, Nigeria’s case is peculiar given the country’s natural endowment in agriculture, mineral resources, crude oil, human capital and friendly climatic conditions. World Bank estimated that over 70 percent of Nigerians are classified as poor, and half of this number lives in absolute poverty. Indeed, part of the experience in rural development in Nigeria has clearly shown that efforts at expanding the economic base of the rural areas almost always fail because of scarcity of and restrictive access to loanable funds.

Poverty alleviation is perhaps one of the most …

The Sharing Economy And The Edges Of Contract Law: Comparing U.S. And U.K. Approaches, Miriam A. Cherry Jan 2017

The Sharing Economy And The Edges Of Contract Law: Comparing U.S. And U.K. Approaches, Miriam A. Cherry

All Faculty Scholarship

Technology and the rise of the on-demand or sharing economy have created new and diverse structures for how businesses operate and how work is conducted. Some of these matters are intermediated by contract, but in other situations, contract law may be unhelpful. For example, contract law does little to resolve worker classification problems on new platforms, such as ridesharing applications. Other forms of online work create even more complex problems, such as when work is disguised as an innocuous task like entering a code or answering a question, or when work is gamified and hidden as a leisure activity. Other …

The Next Iteration Of Progressive Corporate Law, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2017

The Next Iteration Of Progressive Corporate Law, Matthew T. Bodie

All Faculty Scholarship

A wave of progressive corporate law scholarship in the late 1980s and early 1990s reimagined corporate law from the perspective of employees, consumers, and other stakeholders left behind by shareholder primacy. Almost thirty years later, it is time to revisit this literature and consider what progressive corporate law should be in the 21st Century. This essay argues for three changes: (1) a move to the theory of the firm as the underlying economic literature; (2) a focus on employees, rather than stakeholders more generally, and (3) an effort to change statutory and structural aspects of corporate law, such as board …

Lessons From The Dramatists Guild For The Platform Economy, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2017

Lessons From The Dramatists Guild For The Platform Economy, Matthew T. Bodie

All Faculty Scholarship

Are platform workers part of a firm or are they working as individual businesses? Are they providing their labor as part of a team, or do they hold on to individual capital throughout their transactions? This essay explores the question of employee versus independent contract through the specific examples of dramatists and screenwriters. Dramatists have chosen to conduct their work as separate artists; they maintain copyright over their work, and they retain control over its use. Screenwriters, on the other hand, work as part of a team; they hand over their copyright to the production company and cede control over …
