Facing Human Workload: The Resilient Ego: A Psychoanalytic Point Of View, Glauco Maria Genga, Maria Gabriella Pediconii
Facing Human Workload: The Resilient Ego: A Psychoanalytic Point Of View, Glauco Maria Genga, Maria Gabriella Pediconii
H-Workload 2017: Models and Applications (Works in Progress)
The paper aims to show new connections among Human Factors, Human Workload and Resilience. We intend: 1) to highlight the role of subject in facing the human workload, inflected as demanding tasks and emergency situations; 2) to show how psychoanalysis can provide novel insights, not only into human errors, but also into human resilience. They have a common denominator, at least in part: the role of subjective contributions even in demanding situations. Human workload includes a work for satisfaction. We recall also the case study of US Airways Flight 1549 water landing (the so called “Miracle on the Hudson”), which …

Online Measuring Of Available Resources, Enrique Munoz-De-Escalona, José Juan Canas
H-Workload 2017: Models and Applications (Works in Progress)
This paper present a proposal for measuring available mental resources during the accomplishment of a task. Our proposal consists in measuring emotions provoked by perceived self-efficacy in the execution of the task. Self-efficacy is one of the most important factors that affect the resources that a person puts at the disposal of the execution of the task. When a person perceives that he/she is not being effective he/she will activate more resources to improve his performance. This self-efficacy will be reflected in the emotions that the person experiences. A good efficacy will provoke positive emotions and a bad efficacy negative …
The Changing Role Of The University: A Discursive Analysis Of Good Teaching And Positioning Of Academics And Students In Improving The Quality Of Teaching And Learning In Europe’S Higher Education Institutions, Fiona Mcsweeney
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Using the approach of critical discourse analysis this paper presents an examination of the notion of good teaching as constructed in the strategy document Improving the quality of teaching and learning in Europe’s higher education institutions. The aim is to draw attention to, and question how the language used in educational policy documents constructs particular meanings and purposes to concepts such as teaching and learning, as well as creating a particular version of the social relations within educational institutions. This in turn positions teachers and students in particular ways, constructing and limiting who they are and what they do. While …
Community-Based Learning: A Primer, Zeinab Bedri, Ruairí De Fréin, Geraldine Dowling
Community-Based Learning: A Primer, Zeinab Bedri, Ruairí De Fréin, Geraldine Dowling
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Employers are increasingly demanding graduates with industry-ready communication, leadership, emotional intelligence and social ethics skills. Community-based learning (CBL) is a pedagogical approach which has tremendous potential to produce graduates with these attributes. However, for many early-career lecturers, distilling the insights from the teaching and learning literature, and then producing a well-designed CBL module, can be an intimidating task. What is missing is a primer which presents the core ideas of CBL in a way that is independent of subject-specific jargon. Ideally, this primer should provide the reader with the means of either drafting an initial project plan or, at the …
Exploring The Use Of Computer Based Exams For Undergraduate Accounting, Anne Hurley
Exploring The Use Of Computer Based Exams For Undergraduate Accounting, Anne Hurley
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
This paper explores the use of computer-based exams (CBEs) for undergraduate accounting. The primary objective of writing this paper was to establish whether CBEs should be integrated with paper-based exams as a summative assessment in undergraduate accounting modules. Professional accounting organisations and universities and colleges in Ireland were contacted to establish whether CBEs had been adopted and, if so, to take relevant lessons from their experience. The literature reviewed the experiences of students, academics, institutions and professional accounting organisations using CBEs worldwide. Findings from this desk-based research indicated an overall positive experience with CBEs. The professional accounting organisations are continuing …
Emission, Education, And Politics: An Empirical Study Of The Carbon Dioxide And Methane Environmental Kuznets Curve, Cody Williamson
Emission, Education, And Politics: An Empirical Study Of The Carbon Dioxide And Methane Environmental Kuznets Curve, Cody Williamson
The Park Place Economist
This study will estimate carbon dioxide and methane emissions of 181 countries in 2012 through the use of a quadratic function of per capita GDP. Several variables will be used as controls; with GDP per capita, mean years of education, and government regime being the most important. This study estimates the emissions of carbon dioxide and methane because the EPA states that these two gasses account for roughly 92% of the worlds greenhouse gasses, thus making it vital that we have a strong understanding of both gases. Also, no literature known to the author has looked into the evidence of …
Impact Of Institutional And Political Variables On Foreign Direct Investment In Developing Countries, Hang Phung
Impact Of Institutional And Political Variables On Foreign Direct Investment In Developing Countries, Hang Phung
The Park Place Economist
Literature on foreign direct investment (FDI) has been focusing on its traditional determinants for a long time and lack of attention to institutional and political variables. However, in recent years, the pattern of the world FDI flows is observed to show a shift away from developed countries towards developing countries. Such shift is argued to be the result of the improvement in institutional qualities and political stability in developing countries to make investment climate more appealing to foreign investors. The impact of institutional qualities on FDI flows, however, have not been investigated by many studies in the field of FDI. …
Examining The Progress Of Female Athletes In The Marathon, Nathan Atkins
Examining The Progress Of Female Athletes In The Marathon, Nathan Atkins
The Park Place Economist
Unlike other sports such as baseball, basketball, football, and other team sports, the performance of a runner is not affected by the teammates around them or by an opponent’s defense. The only person that can impact the runner’s performance is the runner. At first glance, it may seem that elite marathon runners only come from African countries, but when digging deeper, the variable that makes an elite runner successful may surprise you. The purpose of this paper is to explore the variables that have the greatest impact on elite marathon runner’s performance. In addition to this, this paper attempts to …
Understanding The Influence Of Social Networks And Social Roles On Individuals With Developmental Disabilities: Providing Opportunities In Order To Assess Quality Of Life, Brianna Piro
Honors Projects
This study investigates the influence of social role opportunities on quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD). It also explores the impact of informal social networks on social capital for this population. This study analyzed the effects of newly created social role opportunities on quality of life for a small group of individuals with DD. The hypothesis suggested that those given a new social role would report a higher quality of life than those not given a new role. Pre-test/post-test interviews were administered and a 6 week intervention was implemented with participants of a local social group in …
Dynamical Systems Theory For Transparent Symbolic Computation In Neuronal Networks, Giovanni Sirio Carmantini
Dynamical Systems Theory For Transparent Symbolic Computation In Neuronal Networks, Giovanni Sirio Carmantini
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
In this thesis, we explore the interface between symbolic and dynamical system computation, with particular regard to dynamical system models of neuronal networks. In doing so, we adhere to a definition of computation as the physical realization of a formal system, where we say that a dynamical system performs a computation if a correspondence can be found between its dynamics on a vectorial space and the formal system’s dynamics on a symbolic space. Guided by this definition, we characterize computation in a range of neuronal network models. We first present a constructive mapping between a range of formal systems and …

Geospatial Drivers Of The Groundwater Δ18o Isoscape In A Temperate Maritime Climate (Republic Of Ireland), S. Regan, R. Goodhue, O. Naughton, Paul Hynds
Articles
In recent years, the concept of “isoscapes” has been used to describe spatiotemporal stable isotope distributions within natural environments including groundwater systems at multiple scales. This study presents an updated groundwater δ18O isoscape for the Republic of Ireland and describes the climatic and geological drivers influencing 18O composition. In all, 142 geographically and geologically representative groundwater installations were sampled and analysed, in addition to 35 samples from six nested boreholes. Geospatially, Irish groundwater exhibits high δ18O values in southern and western coastal regions, becoming progressively depleted inland before reaching lowest measured values along the eastern coast, equating to a national …
An Overview Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Groundwater And Implications For Drinking Water Safety, S. Regan, Paul Hynds, R. Flynn
An Overview Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Groundwater And Implications For Drinking Water Safety, S. Regan, Paul Hynds, R. Flynn
Articles
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is composed of a diverse array of compounds, predominantly humic substances, and is a near ubiquitous component of natural groundwater, notwithstanding climatic extremes such as arid and hyper-arid settings. Despite being a frequently measured parameter of groundwater quality, the complexity of DOC composition and reaction behaviour means that links between concentration and human health risk are difficult to quantify and few examples are reported in the literature. Measured concentrations from natural/unpolluted groundwater are typically below 4 mg C/l, whilst concentrations above these levels generally indicate anthropogenic influences and/or contamination issues and can potentially compromise water safety. …
Application Of Artificial Intelligence For Detecting Derived Viruses, Omotayo Asiru, Moses Dlamini, Jonathan Blackledge
Application Of Artificial Intelligence For Detecting Derived Viruses, Omotayo Asiru, Moses Dlamini, Jonathan Blackledge
Conference papers
Computer viruses have become complex and operates in a stealth mode to avoid detection. New viruses are argued to be created each and every day. However, most of these supposedly ‘new’ viruses are not completely new. Most of the supposedly ‘new’ viruses are not necessarily created from scratch with completely new (something novel that has never been seen before) mechanisms. For example, most of these viruses just change their form and signatures to avoid detection. But their operation and the way they infect files and systems is still the same. Hence, such viruses cannot be argued to be new. In …

Reactive Power Control For Smarter (Urban) Distribution Network Management With Increasing Integration Of Renewable Prosumers, Arsalan Zaidi, Keith Sunderland, Massimiliano Coppo, Michael Conlon, Roberto Turri
Conference papers
Smart cities need to deliver reliable electric energy while utilizing every renewable energy source available in a sustainable manner. Increasing renewable electricity capacity, through Distributed Generation (DG) such as small wind and PV generation, causes difficulties for the distribution network operator (DNO) in sustaining adequate and appropriate power quality across the network. The positive impacts provided by such energy sources can be undermined by voltage increases and voltage balance issues. To overcome these problems, urban distribution networks need to transform ideally into smarter energy networks that can deliver renewable electricity locally, predictably and in a controllable and optimized manner. The …

Design Of An Underwater Cable Fault Location Device To Precisely Locate Submarine Cable Faults, Glenn O'Reilly, Joseph Kearney, John Lawler, Tom Looby
Conference papers
The objective of the paper is to develop a robust and reliable method to pinpoint submarine cable faults. Submarine cables have existed for over 100 years but there is still no single method used to determine the precise location of a submarine cable fault. The various methods used to pinpoint cable faults, both submarine and non-submarine were researched and investigated to produce a method which would accurately pinpoint submarine cable faults. From this, the idea of a hydrophone string was derived from a non-submarine pinpointing method currently used. The hydrophone string was tested and it accurately pinpointed the location of …
Enhanced Network Voltage Management (Nvm) Techniques Under The Proliferation Of Rooftop Solar Pv Installation In Low Voltage Distribution Network (Lvdn), Shivananda Pukhrem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Keith Sunderland
Enhanced Network Voltage Management (Nvm) Techniques Under The Proliferation Of Rooftop Solar Pv Installation In Low Voltage Distribution Network (Lvdn), Shivananda Pukhrem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Keith Sunderland
Articles
Proliferation of rooftop solar PV distributed generator (PVDG) installation in low voltage distribution network (LVDN) imposes voltage fluctuation challenges that are a threat to distribution system operators. Reactive power control (RPC) methods are insufficient in isolation to combat the overvoltage fluctuations manifested in LVDN with significant grid-tied PVDG installations. Whereas active power curtailment (APC) control can alleviate the voltage fluctuation in such situations and it is achieved at the cost of reduced active power injection. This paper explores how deficiencies in both RPC and APC as separate approaches can be mitigated by suitably combining RPC and APC algorithms. Strategies combining …

Legal Frameworks For Media And Information Literacy, María-Del-Mar Grandío, Sirin Dilli, Brian O'Neill
Books/Book chapters
Across Europe and beyond, efforts are growing to promote the wider use of digital media by all citizens - adults and young people alike. As such, an increasingly prominent role is being given to the notion that media literacy is a precondition for full and effective participation in contemporary societies. In such a context, interests of policymakers focusing on promoting the benefits of a wider societal digital participation intersect with the traditional function of media literacy to promote enhanced skills and competencies of citizens to access, create and understand media content. Accordingly, a concern with media literacy has moved from …

A Novel Induction Heating System Using Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped Inverter, Bashar Mohammed Flayyih Al Shammeri
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis investigates a novel DC/AC resonant inverter of Induction Heating (IH) system presenting a Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped (MNPCI) topology, as a new part of power supply design. The main function of the prototype is to provide a maximum and steady state power transfer from converter to the resonant load tank, by achieving zero current switching (ZCS) with selecting the best design of load tank topology, and utilizing the advantage aspects of both the Voltage Fed Inverter (VFI) and Current Fed Inverter (CFI) kinds, therefore it can considered as a hybrid-inverter (HVCFI) category . The new design benefits from …
User-Centric Traffic Engineering In Software Defined Networks, Taimur Bakhshi
User-Centric Traffic Engineering In Software Defined Networks, Taimur Bakhshi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Software defined networking (SDN) is a relatively new paradigm that decouples individual network elements from the control logic, offering real-time network programmability, translating high level policy abstractions into low level device configurations. The framework comprises of the data (forwarding) plane incorporating network devices, while the control logic and network services reside in the control and application planes respectively. Operators can optimize the network fabric to yield performance gains for individual applications and services utilizing flow metering and application-awareness, the default traffic management method in SDN. Existing approaches to traffic optimization, however, do not explicitly consider user application trends. Recent SDN …
A Discursive Institutionalist Approach To Understanding The Changes To The Irish Social Partnership Policy After 2008., John Hogan, Nicola A. Timoney
A Discursive Institutionalist Approach To Understanding The Changes To The Irish Social Partnership Policy After 2008., John Hogan, Nicola A. Timoney
Articles
Employing the critical juncture theory (CJT), a discursive institutionalist approach, this paper examines the nature of the changes to social partnership policy at the end of the decade of the 2000s. Did these changes constitute a transformation in social partnership policy, or were they a continuation of a previously established policy pathway? The CJT consists of three elements – economic crisis, ideational change, and the nature of the policy change – that must be identified for us to be able to declare with some certainty if the changes to social partnership policy constituted a critical juncture. In this context, ideational …

Aesopian Language Of Soviet Era Children’S Literature: Translation, Adaptation, And Animation Of A Western Classic, Boryana Borisova
Honors Projects
Analyzing spoken, written, visual, or tangible material can offer sophisticated insight into the complexity of social life, understood through analysis of language in its widest sense; it offers ways of investigating meaning, whether in conversation or in culture. The idea of retelling foreign texts may be alien to some cultures, and understanding why, how, and when a particular work was created is essential for understanding the Russian one. In highly censored Russian culture, skepticism is a prerequisite for reading a text in the Soviet era, as it frequently served as an Aesopian hint or an allegory on contemporary issues. “Aesopian …
Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (Hbim) For Recording And Documenting European Classical Architecture, Conor Dore
Doctoral
Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is a new approach for modelling historic buildings which develops full building information models from remotely sensed data. HBIM consists of a novel library of reusable parametric objects, based on historic architectural data and a system for mapping these library objects to survey data. Using concepts from procedural modelling, a new set of rules and algorithms have been developed to automatically combine HBIM library objects and generate different building arrangements by altering parameters. This is a semi-automatic process where the required building structure and objects are first automatically generated and then refined to match …

Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid
Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Individuals, businesses and governments undertake an ever-growing range of activities online and via various Internet-enabled digital devices. Unfortunately, these activities, services, information and devices are the targets of cybercrimes. Verifying the user legitimacy to use/access a digital device or service has become of the utmost importance. Authentication is the frontline countermeasure of ensuring only the authorised user is granted access; however, it has historically suffered from a range of issues related to the security and usability of the approaches. Traditionally deployed in a point-of-entry mode (although a number of implementations also provide for re-authentication), the intrusive nature of the control …
A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami
A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis proposes a reference model and its computational core to support the creation of software applications within educational environments, which address Differences In Learning (DiffInL) and are applicable to both learners and instructors. This work differs from others in that the strength of this model resides on the re-usable character of the reasoning mechanism enabled by the computational environment. The starting point is the definition of agreed learning goals that the learner needs to achieve. In turn, the reference model generates personalised, best-practice teaching and learning materials, suitable for achieving the individual’s learning goals. This reference model consists of …
