Seeking Common Ground: Making Connections Big And Small, David Lee Keiser
Seeking Common Ground: Making Connections Big And Small, David Lee Keiser
Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose: This essay furthers cross-cultural exchange, and understanding. Written for a general audience by a teacher educator, it argues for accepting all others into the academic conversation. Using varied examples, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate both lifelong learning and the power of connecting across difference.
Design/methodology/approach: The author draws upon experience as a teacher and professor and his engagement with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) for examples of edification and engagement.
Findings: The author cites both the current period and a mid-twentieth-century American major event, the civil rights March on Washington to illustrate possibilities for connection, clarity …

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that tumor mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are primarily shaped by relaxed negative selection, which is contradictory to the critical roles of mtDNA mutations in tumorigenesis. Therefore, we hypothesized that site-specific selection may influence tumor mtDNA mutations.
METHODS: To test our hypothesis, we developed the largest collection of tumor mtDNA mutations to date and evaluated how natural selection shaped mtDNA mutation patterns.
RESULTS: Our data demonstrated that both positive and negative selections acted on specific positions or functional units of tumor mtDNAs, although the landscape of these mutations was consistent with the relaxation of negative selection. …

In plants, aerial organs are initiated at stereotyped intervals, both spatially (every 137° in a pattern called phyllotaxis) and temporally (at prescribed time intervals called plastochrons). To investigate the molecular basis of such regularity, mutants with altered architecture have been isolated. However, most of them only exhibit plastochron defects and/or produce a new, albeit equally reproducible, phyllotactic pattern. This leaves open the question of a molecular control of phyllotaxis regularity. Here, we show that phyllotaxis regularity depends on the function of VIP proteins, components of the RNA polymerase II-associated factor 1 complex (Paf1c). Divergence angles between successive organs along the …

Broken water pumps continue to impede efforts to deliver clean and economically-viable water to the global poor. The literature has demonstrated that customers’ health benefits and willingness to pay for clean water are best realized when clean water infrastructure performs extremely well (>99% uptime). In this paper, we used sensor data from 42 Afridev-brand handpumps observed for 14 months in western Kenya to demonstrate how sensors and supervised ensemble machine learning could be used to increase total fleet uptime from a best-practices baseline of about 70% to >99%. We accomplish this increase in uptime by forecasting pump failures and …
The Use Of Evidentials In Hearsay Contexts In Japanese And English, Tomomi Matsumura
The Use Of Evidentials In Hearsay Contexts In Japanese And English, Tomomi Matsumura
Dissertations and Theses
Evidentials are one of the language codes that convey the speaker's beliefs in terms of the degree of reliability of information and how the speaker obtained information (Chafe, 1986; Ishida, 2006; McCready and Ogata, 2007). Evidentials play an important role in communication since they also function to show the speaker's attitude toward the interlocutors by making a sentence softer (Trent 1998). In his theory of territory of information, Kamio (1990, 1997, 2002) proposed that pragmatic rules of evidentials are different in Japanese than in English. Ishida (2006) studied these differences and argued that learners of Japanese (JF learners) face difficulties …
Language Proficiency And Academic Success Of Bilingual Hispanic Nursing Students, Cristina Dominguez
Language Proficiency And Academic Success Of Bilingual Hispanic Nursing Students, Cristina Dominguez
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The United States (U.S.) experienced recent growth in its minority population. This requires an increase of culturally diverse healthcare providers. English as a second language (ESL) students face challenges such as overcoming their inability to write, comprehend, and communicate in a language different from their native tongue. The study explored the role of language proficiency on academic success among bilingual nursing students on the U.S. and Mexico border.
Cummins Language Proficiency Model guided the study, which aimed to answer whether the dimensions of language proficiency or language acculturation predicted self - assessed language proficiency and academic success. The relationship between …

Hoplistoscelis Sordidus (Heteroptera: Nabidae) In Canada, M. C. Lariviere
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Hoplistoscelis sordidus is recorded for the first time from Canada. The distribution of the species, its establishment in Canada, and its bionomics are discussed. Characters are given that distinguish Hoplistoscelis from all other eastern Canadian genera of Nabinae. The potential role of the genus as a biological control agent is also briefly outlined.

Moths Of The Douglas Lake Region (Emmet And Cheboygan Counties), Michigan: Iv. Geometridae (Lepidoptera), Edward G. Voss
The Great Lakes Entomologist
An account, with known flight periods indicated, of 165 species of Geometridae concludes listing of the "macrolepidoptera" from the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. About 44OJo of these are previously unreported for the region, and 12 species are previously unreported for Michigan in earlier lists for the state.

Location And Condition Of Whitemarked Tussock Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Cocoons In A Michigan Black Walnut Plantation, Louis F. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Whitemarked tussock moth, Orgyia leucostigma, cocoons were monitored in a black walnut, Juglans nigra, plantation in Michigan from 1978 to 1981. Larvae spun cocoons on the exposed bark of the bole (29.6070), in crevices on the bole formed by pruning wounds (17.5%), beneath limbs (24.2%), and in branch crotches (28.7%). Parasites and predators destroyed 88% of the pupae in their cocoons. The tussock moth population, although moderate to high in the egg stage, decreased sufficiently in the larval stages each year to cause no more than 5010 defoliation to individual trees.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the present status of RFID application, benefitsrealisedafterimplementing RFID, problems faced during RFID adoption and its implementation in the libraries andinformationcentresofNorthern India. The survey method of research was adopted in this research. In order to assess the required information about the implementation of RFID technology from the librarian/Inchargeof the library of the nine selected institutions of Northern India, the data was collected through a questionnaire method. Moreover, the respondents were also interviewed to obtain more information. The present study shows that all the selected libraries in Northern India are in the initial stages of RFID …

The rearrangements of protons and neutrons amongst the valence single-particle orbitals during double-β decay of Mo100 have been determined by measuring cross sections in (d,p), (p,d), (He3,α), and (He3,d) reactions on Mo98,100 and Ru100,102 targets. The deduced nucleon occupancies reveal significant discrepancies when compared with theoretical calculations; the same calculations have previously been used to determine the nuclear matrix element associated with the decay probability of double-β decay of the Mo100 system.

Biases In Metallicity Measurements From Global Galaxy Spectra: The Effects Of Flux Weighting And Diffuse Ionized Gas Contamination, Ryan L. L. Sanders, Alice E. Shapley, Kai Zhang, Renbin Yan

Galaxy metallicity scaling relations provide a powerful tool for understanding galaxy evolution, but obtaining unbiased global galaxy gas-phase oxygen abundances requires proper treatment of the various line-emitting sources within spectroscopic apertures. We present a model framework that treats galaxies as ensembles of H II and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) regions of varying metallicities. These models are based upon empirical relations between line ratios and electron temperature for H II regions, and DIG strong-line ratio relations from SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU data. Flux-weighting effects and DIG contamination can significantly affect properties inferred from global galaxy spectra, biasing metallicity estimates by more than …
