Urban Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Ecology In The Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Metroplex, Julie M. Golla
Urban Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Ecology In The Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Metroplex, Julie M. Golla
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Urban landscapes are quickly replacing native habitat around the world. As wildlife and people increasingly overlap in their shared space and resources, so does the potential for human-wildlife conflict, especially with predators. Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are a top predator in several urban areas across the United States and a potential contributor to human-carnivore conflicts. This study evaluated the movements and habitat use of bobcats in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Texas metroplex. Spatial data were collected from 10 bobcats via Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) for approximately one year. Average home range size was 4.60 km2 (n=9, SE=0.99 km …

Aerodynamic Centers Of Arbitrary Airfoils, Orrin Dean Pope
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of designing stable aircraft has been widespread and ongoing since the early days of Orville and Wilbur Wright and their famous Wright Flyer airplane. All aircraft as they fly through the air are subject to minor changes in the forces acting on them. The field of aircraft stability seeks to understand and predict how aircraft will respond to these changes in forces and to design aircraft such that when these forces change the aircraft remains stable. The mathematical equations used to predict aircraft stability rely on knowledge of the location of the aerodynamic center, the point through which …
Regulation And Energy Poverty In The United States, Michael C. Jensen
Regulation And Energy Poverty In The United States, Michael C. Jensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Energy poverty is a topic often neglected in the discussion about global climate change. Apocalyptic prophecies about the negative future effects of climate change ignore the suffering of people around the globe whose lives could be drastically improved with access to reliable sources of energy. Though energy poverty from a global perspective is much more serious than energy poverty from a domestic perspective, high home energy bills are a serious cause for concern for many Americans.
This research examines the relationship between regulation, the prices of electricity and natural gas, and the household energy burden, which is the ratio of …
Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Integrated Water Resources Modeling, Caleb A. Buahin
Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Integrated Water Resources Modeling, Caleb A. Buahin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Like other scientists, hydrologists encode mathematical formulations that simulate various hydrologic processes as computer programs so that problems with water resource management that would otherwise be manually intractable can be solved efficiently. These computer models are typically developed to answer specific questions within a specific study domain. For example, one computer model may be developed to solve for magnitudes of water flow and water levels in an aquifer while another may be developed to solve for magnitudes of water flow through a water distribution network of pipes and reservoirs. Interactions between different processes are often ignored or are approximated using …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Strategic use of energy storage systems alleviates imbalance between energy generation and consumption. Battery storage of various chemistries is favorable for its relatively high energy density and high charge and discharge rates. Battery voltage is in dc, while the distribution of electricity is still predominantly in ac. To effectively harness the battery energy, a dc-ac inverter is required.
A conventional inverter contains two high-frequency switching stages. The battery-interfacing stage provides galvanic isolation and switches at high frequency to minimize the isolation transformer size. The grid-interfacing stage also operates at high frequency to obtain sinusoidal grid currents and the desired power. …

The Comparative Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Mini Mental State Examination (Mmse) And The General Practitioner Assessment Of Cognition (Gpcog) For Identifying Dementia In Primary Care: A Systematic Review Protocol, Ha Hunt, S Van Kampen, Y Takwoingi, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: Improved dementia identification is a global health priority, and general practitioners (GPs) are often the first point of contact for people with concerns about their cognition. However, GPs often express uncertainty in using assessment tools and the evidence based on which tests are most accurate in identifying dementia is unclear. In particular, there is little certainty around how the accuracy of available brief cognitive assessments compares within a clinical family practice setting.Grounded in existing brief cognitive assessment evidence, we will compare the diagnostic test accuracy of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) to the General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition …

Exploring The Effect Of Disability Microaggressions On Sense Of Belonging And Participation In College Classrooms, Lynsie Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Microaggressions are a form of interpersonal discrimination towards marginalized groups that are often ambiguous in nature and delivered unintentionally. The subtleness of these attacks on identity can make them difficult to recognize and address.
Emerging research reveals that the targets of microaggressions are experiencing negative effects on their wellbeing; however, the bulk of existing literature on this topic only addresses microaggressions perpetrated towards racial minority or LGBT individuals. Little is known about pervasiveness and potential impact of microaggressions directed towards people with disabilities- particularly in academic contexts.
This study pilots a measurement tool, the Microaggressions Towards Students with a Disability …
Extensions And Improvements To Random Forests For Classification, Anna Quach
Extensions And Improvements To Random Forests For Classification, Anna Quach
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The motivation of my dissertation is to improve two weaknesses of Random Forests. One, the failure to detect genetic interactions between two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in higher dimensions when the interacting SNPs both have weak main effects and two, the difficulty of interpretation in comparison to parametric methods such as logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, and linear regression.
We focus on detecting pairwise SNP interactions in genome case-control studies. We determine the best parameter settings to optimize the detection of SNP interactions and improve the efficiency of Random Forests and present an efficient filtering method. The filtering method is …

Bees are necessary pollinators for a vast array of different plants, including many which we rely on for food. In order to grow sufficient crops to feed the world’s growing population, we need to make sure our crops are visited by the most effective possible pollinators. However, this is complicated by the fact that there are over 4,000 bee species in North America, many of which vary in their pollination effectiveness and are difficult to identify. My dissertation’s first two data chapters focus on classifying the species of the xeric solitary bee group Anthophora subgenus Micranthophora, including seven newly …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Writing is so important. It is important in school and in our careers; writing is found to be helpful physiologically and psychologically. Experts wonder, with writing so important, why is writing not being adequately taught in the schools. The answer may be that writing is complex and teaching it is even more complex. The Read-to-Write Strategy is a writing model based on the study of exemplary models of text and children are explicitly taught how to write the way an author writes through a process of the teacher modeling how to write this way; the teacher sharing the writing task …

Software development is a collaborative process where many developers come together and work on a project. To make things easy and manageable, software is developed on a version control system. A version control system is a centralized system which stores code and adds code from all other developers as an increment to the code base in the repository. Since multiple people work on the same code repository together, it is important to make sure that their contributions do not conflict with each other. It is important to maintain the quality and integrity of the repository. This is where the code …

Moving Toward And Away From Others: A Person-Centered Analysis Of Social Orientations In Emerging Adulthood, Nathan A. Jorgensen
Theses and Dissertations
Emerging adulthood is a time rife with transitions, and is thus an important time period to study the various ways in which people both connect with and move away from others, or how they are socially oriented. Previous research has suggested a number of factors that contribute to social orientations, including social motivations, the self in relation to others, other-directed emotions and cognitions, and actual social behaviors. The current study examined what types of social orientations exist and how they relate to indices of relational and individual well-being in a sample of US emerging adults (N = 787). Using latent …
Using Remote Cameras To Estimate The Abundance Of Ungulates, Jace C. Taylor
Using Remote Cameras To Estimate The Abundance Of Ungulates, Jace C. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Many wildlife populations globally are experiencing unprecedented declines, and without accurate and precise estimates of abundance, we will not be able to conserve these vulnerable species. Remote cameras have rapidly advanced as wildlife monitoring tools and may provide accurate and precise estimates of abundance that improve upon traditional methods. Using remote cameras to estimate abundance may be less expensive, less intrusive, less dangerous, and less time consuming than other methods. While it is apparent that remote cameras have a place in the future of wildlife monitoring, research, and management, many questions remain concerning the proper use of these tools. In …

All Dissertations
With pressure from strict emission and fuel consumption regulations, researchers are searching for improved internal combustion engine performance. Especially for the heavy-duty vehicles, which takes up 7% of the total vehicle volume while consume around 30% of transportation energy in US. Around 40-60% of energy is wasted as heat in heavy-duty diesel (HDD) vehicles in different engine operating conditions, which mainly includes the waste heat in exhaust gas, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) circuit, and engine coolant. Waste heat recovery (WHR) techniques are potential to achieve the fuel economy and emission reduction goals. Among the available WHR techniques, organic Rankine cycle …
Study Of The Anharmonicity Of Vibrational Modes In Carbon Nano-Materials Using A Moments-Based Approach, Hengjia Wang
Study Of The Anharmonicity Of Vibrational Modes In Carbon Nano-Materials Using A Moments-Based Approach, Hengjia Wang
All Dissertations
Thermal properties of solids are one of the most important features studied in solid state physics, and many of the thermal properties are consequences of anharmonicity in solids. Many experimental techniques and theoretical methods have been successfully developed in the study of the anharmonicity and our understanding of the anharmonicity of vibrational modes in materials is emerging nicely. A new theoretical approach that is based on moments of the Liouvillian has been developed by Dr. Murray Daw's group. The new approach is expected to be much faster than other theoretical methods. Furthermore, the new approach does not involve perturbation theory …
