Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li
Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li
Master's Projects and Capstones
When new Chinese immigrants first arrive in the United States, they face challenges related to both language barriers and acculturative stress. Language barriers and acculturative stress mutually reinforce each other. Furthermore, they significantly inconvenience new Chinese immigrants in terms of living, working and studying. Incorporating cultural information into English as a second language (ESL) teaching is thus important from a sociocultural and intercultural perspective. Therefore, the underlying purposes of this project is to enhance English communicative competence and American cultural adaptation among new Chinese immigrants by immersing them in authentic, situational, and practical communication in the United States. The project …

Assessment Of Falls On A Medical-Telemetry Unit, Andie Reed
Master's Projects and Capstones
The purpose of this quality improvement project aimed at reducing falls on a medical-telemetry unit in a large metropolitan Magnet hospital. It was important for the MSN/CNL students to focus on falls because it is not just a concern for this institution, it is a national dilemma that needs to be addressed. Due to the complexities and intricate details of the IRB process, the MSN/CNL students were unable to collect data or further advance their project into the microsystem. Instead, information was attained from the University of San Francisco database to allow the MSN/CNL students to continue with the steps …

The Sioux's Suits: Global Law And The Dakota Access Pipeline, Stephen Young
The Sioux's Suits: Global Law And The Dakota Access Pipeline, Stephen Young
American Indian Law Journal
The Sioux Tribe’s lawsuits and protests against the Dakota Access Pipelines (DAPL) received an incredible amount of international attention in ways that many Indigenous peoples’ protests have not. This article argues that attention exists because the Sioux Tribe has been at the epicenter of the Indigenous peoples’ rights movement in international law. Accordingly, they have invoked or claimed international human rights—particularly free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC)— to complicate, and perhaps destabilize, the DAPL’s development. However, the importance of their activism is not merely in claiming human rights.
Based upon a global map of law that involves multiple and overlapping …
A Hell Of A Complex: The Miscarriages Of The Federal Hydropower Licensing Regime, Derek Red Arrow Frank
A Hell Of A Complex: The Miscarriages Of The Federal Hydropower Licensing Regime, Derek Red Arrow Frank
American Indian Law Journal
What you are about to read is an illustration of systemic racism. Systemic racism is the current effects of statutes and policies developed through a singular and racially-charged narrative. The current hydropower relicensing regime fails to acknowledge the overarching Treaty-reserved rights of American Indian tribes while statutorily granting state and federal authorities the power to prescribe mandatory conditions on hydropower projects. This fact remains constant whether the hydropower project is within or outside a tribe’s reservation or aboriginal territory. Specifically, the Hells Canyon Complex, which rests along the Snake River, has had and continues to have enormous impacts on fisheries …

A Spatio-Temporal Approach To Mitigate Automotive Radar Spoofing Attacks, Prateek Kapoor
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Cyber-physical system (CPS) has become an integral part of human life, ranging from aircraft to health care systems. The security of these critical components ensures its wider acceptability. Traditionally, many works to secure cyber-physical system (CPS) has been done in the cyber domain, like securing inter/intra CPS communication, securing the exposed software, rebuilding control input derived from sensor data post-digitization, using sensor fusion. All of this security software suffers from a basic attack wherein an attacker compromises the physical/analog sensing system. Researchers have made some progress in mitigating such attacks on physical/analog signals of CPS, the current state of the …

Relationships Between Complex Pediatric Health Conditions And The Built, Physical And Social Environments, Brittany Corley
Theses & Dissertations
The relationship between human health and the environment is complex and overall poorly understood. The environment has a lasting impact on health, and the processes appear to start at conception. Thus, this dissertation examines the potential relationship between pediatric health and the environment.
The first relationship examined was between the built environment and comorbid Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Many publications have reported the relationship between socioeconomic disadvantage, Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, the link between the built environment and Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder symptom severity is poorly understood. …

The Phenomenon Of Information Asymmetry Between The Supplier And The Client In It Projects, Bartosz Wachnik
European Management Studies
The phenomenon of information asymmetry between the supplier and the client in IT projects based on outsourcing is an important issue that affects the entire life cycle of an IT project. Information asymmetry is an inherent feature of transactions in the IT market, which should be considered while analysing IT project success. The aim of this article is to summarise my research concerning information asymmetry in IT projects. The conclusions may be interesting both for practitioners and theorists of business informatics.

Weaponized Citizenship: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of U.S. Citizenship Legislation In The Pacific Unincorporated Territories, Ross Dardani
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines U.S. citizenship legislation in the U.S. Pacific unincorporated territories through Critical Race Theory’s interest-convergence thesis. I employ Derrick Bell’s theory of interest-convergence to argue that it is only when economic, cultural, political, and social interests converge to benefit the United States that U.S. lawmakers have enacted legislation to extend citizenship to the Pacific unincorporated territories (Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). I also rely on Mary Dudziak’s use of interest-convergence, which she used to explain the implementation of key social reforms of the Civil Rights Movement, such as desegregation, as a model …

Abstract
Operating room nurses are constantly challenged with new surgical procedures and technology that affect the delivery of safe patient care. A deficiency in skill sets was identified among 50% of OR nurses in this microsystem. A structured scrub training program will improve the performance of novice and advanced beginner nurses to prevent the occurrence of adverse events. This program includes 320 hours of exposure to scrub the top ten procedures of two specialty services after the nurse learns how to circulate. The ability to circulate and scrub is an indication of high performance. It is expected that the OR …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Previous studies have identified pregnancy intention to correlate with both maternal and fetal health. Though unintended pregnancy rates are dropping in America, they remain high among minority and young women. Contraceptive usage, a leading protective factor for unintended pregnancies, has been found to vary greatly by age and ethnicity. These two projects aimed to decrease unintended pregnancy rates through increasing patient knowledge of contraceptive options and correct usage. The first project focused on creating a comprehensive, oral contraceptive pill instructional handout for research participants of the birth control pill study. This handout was created through the analysis of compliance errors …

Increasing Patient Safety During Medication Administration, Vivien Tso
Master's Projects and Capstones
Medication administration error is one of the crucial medical errors that compromises patient safety in hospitals each day. Direct observations were conducted to assess medication administration (MA) accuracy and practices in order to determine the root cause(s) of errors at a community-based, non-profit hospital. Failure to scan patients’ wristbands, to verbally verify patients’ identity with two identifiers, and to verbally verify patients’ allergies, were some practices that were found to lead to medication administration errors. Implementation tools such as an informative video and reminder signage at bedside computers were piloted at the oncology unit of the hospital to improve nursing …
Teaching Reduced Forms: A Curriculum Guide For Junior High English Language Teachers Using Digital Technology Based Activities And Classroom Games, Dion Sanchez
Master's Projects and Capstones
Japanese English language students often struggle with listening comprehension when communicating with native English speakers due to the use of reduced forms. Native speakers use contractions, reductions, elisions, and linking in casual speech which sounds unfamiliar to students who have not been exposed to reduced forms in their classrooms. In order to facilitate improved listening skills and help students with speaking fluency, reduced forms ought to be taught in English classrooms.
While the use of reduced forms by native English speakers has been recognized as a problem for English students, incorporating reduced forms instruction into an English curriculum involves overcoming …

The Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Community-Based Mobile Meal Programs For Low-Income Families, Nicholas Vesom
Master's Projects and Capstones
Food disparity is a continuously prevalent issue in the United States despite the presence of programs, such as the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), to fill gaps in reaching those who are financially inhibited and do not have a sustainable source of nutritionally balanced food. A primary part of the issue that arises is that these types of programs have restrictions on age or only operate during the school year. To assess this issue, the Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD), in conjunction with the Stanford University Pediatrics Advocacy Program (SUPAP), initiated …

Formalized Mentorship Program For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, Mindy S. Gaw
Master's Projects and Capstones
The nursing profession is currently experiencing a shortage. Despite the need for nurses, there is a high percentage of new nurses who leave their first place of employment before reaching the first year of hire. Mentorship is a tool that has been highly written about, but not widely utilized. Mentorship was found to be helpful in four key areas: retention rates, job satisfaction, lateral violence, and job competency. This project’s purpose was to inform on the development of a formalized nurse mentorship program. Data collected from two open-ended questionnaires and a survey found that a large community medical center could …

Creating An Energetic Classroom: A Handbook For Esl Teachers, Lusha Sha
Master's Projects and Capstones
Low classroom energy is a common problem in English language teaching. This field project discusses the problematic low-energy classroom from both the student side and the instructor side. The first aspect explored is the silence of students. Because speech shows the process of language acquisition and is also the precondition of language acquisition, it is crucial to discover and understand the reasons for some students’ unwillingness to speak (Baran-Lucarz, 2014). The project explains the willingness to communicate and the cultural variations in learning. The second aspect of a low-energy classroom in this project is the ESL teacher lack of enthusiasm. …

Fall Prevention In Palliative Care: Improving Fall Prevention And Management At Point Of Admission, Katrina G. Pavlov
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
By nature falls begin to occur as part of the aging process and are a major source of morbidity and mortality in the elderly patients. Despite the extra blanket of care the palliative team creates for it’s patients, fall incidents are continuing to plague this palliative domain. During the process of this project, gaps in the delivery of care contributing to patient falls were identified. It was established that the care system’s inconsistency and lack of structured assessment of the individuals’ risks for falls and thus customization of patient specific fall prevention strategies at point of admission was the …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Purpose: This quality improvement project serves to implement a fall prevention plan to decrease patient falls on the medical-telemetry unit of a large metropolitan hospital.
Background: Patient falls are a persistent nationwide problem in the acute care setting. Between 700,000 and 1,000,000 falls occur in hospital every year and approximately 30-35% of these falls result in injury and 11,000 falls result in death (Health Research & Educational Trust, 2016). Falls always cause harm to the patient, whether it is emotional or physical; but, falls can also cause harm to the providers, family, and organization. Patient injury, additional hospital expenses, and …

Improving Early Sepsis Identification On Inpatient Units, Monica Schurle
Master's Projects and Capstones
Sepsis is a serious complication, which is initiated by the body’s extreme response to an infection. If sepsis is not identified and treated promptly, it can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death. In order to reduce the number of patients who decline to sepsis in hospital, an efficient sepsis protocol needs to be implemented. Nursing practices, knowledge, and early recognition of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) were assessed and measured in order to implement effective interventions. A root cause analysis was conducted to identify any discrepancies with compliance performing the sepsis screening in a timely manner, identify …

Riding Ladies: Female Motorcycle Riders Try To Bring Down The Patriarchy, Kellie Ell
Capstones
The Brooklyn Invitational Custom Motorcycle Show is the last place one would expect to find the fall of the patriarchy. The number of female motorcycle riders has nearly doubled in the last two decades. Women riders are challenging the notion that motorcycle riding is a sport for men — and a man’s world. Feminism was supposed to be empowering. In my story, I am exploring who is benefiting from all of this female empowerment.

Capstones
This capstone explores the overseas Chinese democracy movement in the United States. English-language coverage about the movement has been limited, and little systemic coverage exists. However, the exile movement is fundamental to understanding how China’s most prominent political opposition is faring as China became the second largest world economy. It will also detail human drama and infighting in this exile community. I interviewed more than a dozen U.S.-based political exiles, journalists and experts, in both Chinese and English.
