“Damp In Bathroom. Damp In Back Room. It's Very Depressing!” Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Housing Problems, Energy Affordability Concerns, And Health And Well-Being In Uk Social Housing, Gt Boomsma, S Pahl, Rv Jones, A Fuertes Jan 2017

“Damp In Bathroom. Damp In Back Room. It's Very Depressing!” Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Housing Problems, Energy Affordability Concerns, And Health And Well-Being In Uk Social Housing, Gt Boomsma, S Pahl, Rv Jones, A Fuertes

School of Psychology

Social housing residents often struggle with achieving adequate levels of warmth in their home on a limited household budget. Additionally, other housing problems such as damp are common. Previous research has found a link between housing problems and poor health and reduced well-being, but this relationship is complex and poorly understood. A survey among UK social housing residents (N=536) investigated the association between cold and damp housing, as well as the role of energy affordability concerns in the relationship between housing problems and health. The findings indicated that struggles with keeping warm related to a cluster of damp and mould …

Psychometric Properties Of The Behavioural Outcomes Of Anxiety Questionnaire In Stroke Patients With Aphasia, Alicia Eccles, Reg Morris, Ian Kneebone Jan 2017

Psychometric Properties Of The Behavioural Outcomes Of Anxiety Questionnaire In Stroke Patients With Aphasia, Alicia Eccles, Reg Morris, Ian Kneebone

School of Psychology

Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties of an observational, carer-completed anxiety screen for aphasic stroke patients. Design: Phase 1: A cross-sectional questionnaire design to establish psychometric properties. Phase 2: A randomized longitudinal design with treatment and control to evaluate sensitivity to change and repeatability/reliability. Subjects: Phase 1: 111 patient-carer dyads were recruited through stroke charities: patient mean age 69.7(10. 7), 6.2(5. 2) years since stroke, 76 male; carer mean age 64.7(12. 2), 27 male. Phase 2. A subsample of 50 dyads (29 completed). Measures: All patients completed the Tension Rating Circles and the Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test. Carers completed the …

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler Jan 2017

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many academic libraries have implemented institutional repositories (IR), which offer some potential for publishing and archiving data but can fall short of usability expectations and requirements. As general purpose repositories, IR's may lack the metadata and service capabilities to dynamically represent data and to effectively capitalize on complex, domain oriented metadata schema such as the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) or the ISO 19115-2014 Geographic information metadata standards. For libraries interested in providing data publishing services, one alternative to the domain agnostic nature of IR content and metadata models is to maintain the IR for traditional document types and in addition …

Beyond Discovery: Cross-Platform Application Of Ecological Metadata Language In Support Of Quality Assurance And Control, Jon Wheeler, Mark Servilla, Kristin Vanderbilt Jan 2017

Metadata may be generally understood to support discovery and performance of bibliographic functions against a given resource or set of resources. For example, a limited set of basic descriptive metadata can be used to index sets of items, group or otherwise associate similar items through shared metadata values, or to establish means of defining and enforcing relevance or other ranking systems. Within the context of curating research data, descriptive and other types of metadata (notably those defined the CCSDS Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System) may be more broadly applied to administer access and reuse policies, define …

Multi-scale models can facilitate whole plant simulations by linking gene networks, protein synthesis, metabolic pathways, physiology, and growth. Whole plant models can be further integrated with ecosystem, weather, and climate models to predict how various interactions respond to environmental perturbations. These models have the potential to fill in missing mechanistic details and generate new hypotheses to prioritize directed engineering efforts. Outcomes will potentially accelerate improvement of crop yield, sustainability, and increase future food security. It is time for a paradigm shift in plant modeling, from largely isolated efforts to a connected community that takes advantage of advances in high performance …

We have established proof of principle for the Indicator Cell Assay Platform™ (iCAP™), a broadly applicable tool for blood-based diagnostics that uses specifically-selected, standardized cells as biosensors, relying on their innate ability to integrate and respond to diverse signals present in patients' blood. To develop an assay, indicator cells are exposed in vitro to serum from case or control subjects and their global differential response patterns are used to train reliable, disease classifiers based on a small number of features. In a feasibility study, the iCAP detected pre-symptomatic disease in a murine model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with 94% …
