Synthesis And Spectral Analysis Of Some Metal Ions Complexes With Mixed Ligands Of Schiff Base And 1, 10-Phenanthroline, Waleed A. Mahmoud, Zainab M. Hassan
Baghdad Science Journal
The free Schiff base ligand (HL1) is prepared by being mixed with the co-ligand 1, 10-phenanthroline (L2). The product then is reacted with metal ions: (Cr+3, Fe+3, Co+2, Ni+2, Cu+2 and Cd+2) to get new metal ion complexes. The ligand is prepared and its metal ion complexes are characterized by physic-chemical spectroscopic techniques such as: FT-IR, UV-Vis, spectra, mass spectrometer, molar conductivity, magnetic moment, metal content, chloride content and microanalysis (C.H.N) techniques. The results show the formation of the free Schiff base ligand (HL1). The fragments of the prepared free Schiff base ligand are identified by the mass spectrometer technique. …

The Odd Generalized Exponential Generalized Linear Exponential Distribution, Albert Luguterah, Suleman Nasiru
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this article, a new generalization of the Generalized Linear Exponential distribution called the odd generalized exponential generalized linear exponential distribution is proposed. The mathematical properties, including moments and order statistics, have been derived. An application of the model to real data sets revealed that the new model can be used to provide a better fit than its sub-models

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, we propose to obtain the Bayesian estimators of unknown parameter of a three parameter gamma inverse Weibull distribution, based on non-informative and informative priors using different loss functions. A real life example has been used to compare the performance of the estimates under different loss functions
Designing Proteins For Biomechanical And Molecular Biological Studies, Momoko Tajiri
Designing Proteins For Biomechanical And Molecular Biological Studies, Momoko Tajiri
TechTalks
Proteins are large biomolecules consisting one or more long chain of amino acid residues. Proteins perform a wide variety of functions within organisms including catalyzing metabolic activities, signal transduction, and transportation of molecules. They function differently from one another as their sequences of amino acids and also due to a variation of modification placed on residues. Change in modification patterns will impact protein interaction with other molecules, thus influence normal cell activities and may lead to disease development. In order to study the consequences of modification, we have a method to prepare proteins with desired modification patterns. Using the technique, …

Decentralized Algorithm Of Dynamic Task Allocation For A Swarm Of Homogeneous Robots, Maha Alshawi
Decentralized Algorithm Of Dynamic Task Allocation For A Swarm Of Homogeneous Robots, Maha Alshawi
Theses and Dissertations
The current trends in the robotics field have led to the development of large-scale swarm robot systems, which are deployed for complex missions. The robots in these systems must communicate and interact with each other and with their environment for complex task processing. A major problem for this trend is the poor task planning mechanism, which includes both task decomposition and task allocation. Task allocation means to distribute and schedule a set of tasks to be accomplished by a group of robots to minimize the cost while satisfying operational constraints. Task allocation mechanism must be run by each robot, which …

Aposematism: An Alternative Hypothesis On How We Discover Medicinal Organisms, Nemer E. Narchi
Aposematism: An Alternative Hypothesis On How We Discover Medicinal Organisms, Nemer E. Narchi
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
The most widely accepted theories as to how primates select medicinal organisms are based on smelling-tasting bitter, and most of the times toxic, plants (Etkin & Ross, 1982; Johns, 1990). In primates, however, the senses of smell and taste are not as dominant as vision, an evolutionary trait which has been proven to be one of the most favored. I present a perspective claiming that aposematism, the conspicuous coloration displayed by toxic organisms, may play an important role in human recognition of medicinal organisms. This paper represents an open invitation for ecological anthropologists and ethnobiologists to generate empirical data that …

An Historical Analysis Of Lab Techniques As Applies To Current Glial Cell Research, Nathan Ostermann
An Historical Analysis Of Lab Techniques As Applies To Current Glial Cell Research, Nathan Ostermann
JCCC Honors Journal
The primary focus of neurology, since the beginning, has been the neuron. This is understandable, neuronal networks and nerves being the main communication mechanism between the brain and the rest of the body. However, this focus on neurons has overshadowed and delayed research on the other cells in the brain. Glial cells, or neuroglia, are defined as all cells in the brain that are not electrically excitable neurons or vascular cells. This definition of glial cells introduced by Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow in 1858. Until relatively recently, the idea that glial cells are simply passive elements of the brain that …

The tumor suppressor gene HIC1 (Hypermethylated In Cancer 1) encodes a transcriptional repressor mediating the p53-dependent apoptotic response to irreparable DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) through direct transcriptional repression of SIRT1. HIC1 is also essential for DSB repair as silencing of endogenous HIC1 in BJ-hTERT fibroblasts significantly delays DNA repair in functional Comet assays. HIC1 SUMOylation favours its interaction with MTA1, a component of NuRD complexes. In contrast with irreparable DSBs induced by 16-hours of etoposide treatment, we show that repairable DSBs induced by 1 h etoposide treatment do not increase HIC1 SUMOylation or its interaction with MTA1. Furthermore, HIC1 SUMOylation …

Inhibition Of Mammalian Glycoprotein Ykl-40 Identification Of The Physiological Ligand, Abhishek A. Kognole, Christina M. Payne
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
YKL-40 is a mammalian glycoprotein associated with progression, severity, and prognosis of chronic inflammatory diseases and a multitude of cancers. Despite this well documented association, identification of the lectin′s physiological ligand and, accordingly, biological function has proven experimentally difficult. YKL-40 has been shown to bind chito-oligosaccharides; however, the production of chitin by the human body has not yet been documented. Possible alternative ligands include proteoglycans, polysaccharides, and fibers like collagen, all of which makeup the extracellular matrix. It is likely that YKL-40 is interacting with these alternative polysaccharides or proteins within the body, extending its function to cell biological roles …
Sperm Pairing And Measures Of Efficiency In Planar Swimming Models, Paul Cripe, Owen Richfield, Julie Simons
Sperm Pairing And Measures Of Efficiency In Planar Swimming Models, Paul Cripe, Owen Richfield, Julie Simons
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Sperm of certain species engage in cooperative swimming behaviors which result in differences in velocity and efficiency of swimming, as well as ability to effectively fertilize the egg. In particular, Monodelphis domestica is a species of opossum whose sperm often swim cooperatively as a pair, with heads fused together. In order to understand the empirical effects of cooperative swimming behaviors, we propose a simple preferred-curvature-based model to model individual and paired sperm using the method of regularized Stokeslets to model the viscous fluid environment. The effects of swimming freely versus paired swimming, phase relationship, and the angle at which sperm …

Sulfur Isotope Characteristics Of The Permian Vhms Deposits In Tasik Chini District, Central Belt Of Peninsular Malaysia, Mohd Basril Iswadi Basori, Khin Zaw, Robert Ross Large, Wan Fuad Wan Hassan
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Sulfur isotope data from sulfide and sulfate minerals have been measured from the two typical examples of the Permian volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits at the Tasik Chini district in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, we present the sulfur isotope data for 33 sulfide minerals and 23 barite samples from two VHMS deposits in the Tasik Chini district. Sulfides show a narrow range of sulfur values from -2.9%o to +8.30%o, which can be interpreted to be derived from a mixed sulfur source of reduced seawater sulfate with the possible addition of magmatic sulfur. Sulfate sulfur in …

Although screening for pre-cancerous cervical lesions and human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination are accepted and effective means to prevent cervical cancer, women in Mali have limited access to these interventions. In addition, cervical cancer prevention by HPV vaccination has been controversial in some settings. To reduce cervical cancer prevalence and increase HPV vaccine uptake, it is important to understand the level of knowledge about cervical cancer screening and practices related to vaccination in at-risk populations. In this study, the level of knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer and attitudes towards vaccination were assessed among 301 participants (male and female, adults …

Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common and lethal cancers in West Africa. Even though vaccines that protect against the most common Human papillomavirus (HPV) strains, 16 and 18, are currently in use in developed countries, the implementation of these vaccines in developing countries has been painfully slow, considering the pre-eminence of HPV-associated cervical cancer among women in those countries.
Aim: We performed serological and PCR-based assessment of blood and tissue specimens obtained from women undergoing cervical cancer-related surgery at a major urban hospital in Bamako. Since several therapeutic HPV vaccines are currently in clinical trials, we …
A Comparative Analysis Of Stress Responses In Diverse Acanthamoeba Isolates, Mallory Jean Douthitt
A Comparative Analysis Of Stress Responses In Diverse Acanthamoeba Isolates, Mallory Jean Douthitt
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Acanthamoeba are free-living amoebae which can differentiate from vegetative, trophozoite forms into dormant cysts upon encountering unfavorable conditions. Acanthamoeba isolates FLA9, BP, and FLA22 are known to have unusual tolerance to environmental conditions which would promote encystment in the type strain, Neff. To facilitate further research into the behavior of these isolates, the phenotypic variables of instantaneous growth rate (μ), mean exponential encystment rate (Ԑ), and overall encystment success are calculated for the study isolates a variety of environmental conditions. Results indicate that BP and FLA22 may prefer growth conditions that are intolerable to the Neff strain. Findings suggest genomic …

An Evaluation Of Gridded Temperature Products And Their Effectiveness In Modeling Small Scale Ambient Temperatures, Barrie Chileen
Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The use of remotely sensed temperature products is becoming increasingly prevalent in research on climate change due to their accessibility, low cost, and spatial and temporal coverage. These studies use gridded products to model near-surface ambient temperatures as many often lack the resources and time to conduct on- site temperature measurements. Previous studies have compared the effectiveness of these gridded products against each other and weather station data (Vavrus et al. 2015, McEvoy et al. 2014). However, little research has been done to determine the effectiveness of these gridded products in modeling ambient climate. For this study, 65 LogTag temperature …
T-0632 Amine Analogs As Agonists For Glp-1 Receptor, Christina Lepore
T-0632 Amine Analogs As Agonists For Glp-1 Receptor, Christina Lepore
Honors Thesis Collection
The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) is implicated in the pancreatic signaling pathway responsible for insulin secretion. Due to its seven transmembrane domains, a nuanced model of the GLP-1R structure cannot be elucidated through X-ray crystallography. We intend to improve current understanding of GLP-1R structure and binding mechanisms by chemically modifying T-0632, one of its non-peptide small molecule antagonists, in order to alter its interactions with the GLP-1R active site. To accomplish this, we will produce an analog of T-0632 in which an amine group is inserted at the standard carboxylic acid locus. In doing so, we will disrupt charged interactions …

5-(Bromomethyl)- and 5-(trichloromethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-ones were synthesized from bromocarbonyl hydrazine intermediate salts and acid halides to provide further evidence for our proposed mechanism for the formation of oxadiazolone ring systems from sydnones. 5-(Bromomethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one was a compound of interest due to its SN2 possibilities and three potential sites of diversification. The procedure to synthesize 5-(bromomethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one was developed originally by Madaram in the Turnbull lab, but was further optimized in the present work by altering the time, temperature and stoichiometric equivalents of the acid halide to provide high purity and excellent yields of the product. While this compound of interest had been isolated and …

We have developed a miniature human liver (liver-sinusoid-on-a-chip) model using a dual microchannel separated by a porous membrane. Primary human hepatocytes and immortalized bovine aortic endothelial cells were co-cultured on opposite sides of a microporous membrane in a dual microchannel with continuous perfusion. Primary human hepatocytes in this system retained their polygonal morphology for up to 26 days, while hepatocytes cultured in the absence of bovine aortic endothelial cells lost their morphology within a week. In order to demonstrate the utility of our human-liver-sinusoid-on-a-chip, human hepatocytes in this system were directly infected by Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). Expression of the …
