Was T. S. Eliot's "Tantalus Jar" Actually A Leyden Jar?, Eric A. Schiff
Was T. S. Eliot's "Tantalus Jar" Actually A Leyden Jar?, Eric A. Schiff
Physics - All Scholarship
T. S. Eliot wrote the introduction to the volume of Ezra Pound’s Selected Poems that was published in 1928. In an important and oft-cited passage, he used the term “tantalus jar”. In the present paper, we show that this term was a coinage. It likely refers to the Leyden jar, which was an early device invented in the 1700s for storing electrical charge. Eliot may have become acquainted with it through The Golden Bough (1912), which he refers to in later work. We speculate as to whether Eliot’s coinage was intentional or not.

Mexica Textiles: Archaeological Remains From The Sacred Precincts Of Tenochtitlan And Tlatelolco, Leonardo López Luján, Salvador Guilliem Arroyo
PreColumbian Textile Conference VII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VII (2016)
In contrast with the rich written and iconographical data from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries concerning Mexica textiles, discoveries of such materials in archaeological contexts in Mexico City are quite rare. This paucity is reflected in our archaeological collections, in spite of the fact that the imperial Mexica capital received in tribute and trade copious amounts of unprocessed cotton, thread, cord, fabric, and clothing, and that the sister cities, Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco, were bustling centers of textile production. The few Mexica examples extant today are in poor condition and have survived thanks to being carbonized during rituals prior to their …
Rudolf Bultmann On Myth, History, And The Resurrection, Brent Hege
Rudolf Bultmann On Myth, History, And The Resurrection, Brent Hege
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Christian faith stands or falls with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. While that assertion itself is perhaps uncontroversial, precisely what this confession means has been a subject of profound significance and immense controversy for centuries. Central to this discussion is the role of myth and history in the biblical witness and in the church’s theological engagement with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. This book traces key trajectories of German Protestant discussions of myth, history, and the resurrection from its earliest critical analysis in the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus and David Friedrich Strauss to contemporary …

Academic Blasphemy: Providing Access To Textbooks In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
As textbook prices and tuition continue to soar, academic libraries offering textbooks as part of their circulating or reserves collections are valuable contributors to student recruitment and retention. Students need affordable and convenient access to textbooks for reasons including delayed financial aid, personal economic hardships, and just-in-time use. Textbooks at the library can fill those needs. Criss Library’s Summer 2017 Textbook Reserves Pilot Project brought together a team from several departments across campus, selected textbooks for a small number of general education courses, and marketed the program to our student success outreach partners. The goal of the project was to …

All In - And More! Gambling In The James Bond Films, Pauliina Raento
All In - And More! Gambling In The James Bond Films, Pauliina Raento
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Scholarly analysis of gambling in the James Bond films is rare, despite the multitude of topics in Bondology and the fictional agent’s global fame. The odd commentary in gambling scholarship criticizes the franchise from the perspective of harm prevention. This article counters both groups of scholars with a qualitative interpretation of Bond’s gambling habits and the role of gambling and risk taking in the film series. A basic toolkit of visual methodologies is applied to the 24 EON-produced Bond films released in 1962–2015. The examination shows the critical importance of gambling to character identity, power hierarchies and communication, atmosphere, and …
Student Resistance And Standardization In Schools, Frank Pignatelli
Student Resistance And Standardization In Schools, Frank Pignatelli
Occasional Paper Series
A criticism of the current climate of public schools where standardization is key, compliance is rewarded, and resistance is met with lowered status and increased scrutiny. This article asserts that acts of resistance can be crucial opportunities to promote a student’s moral, political, and intellectual development. Civic education, student agency, conflict management, and communities of inquiry are areas that require attention and application in the classroom.

Mapping The World: Facts And Meaning In Adjudication And Mediation, Robert Rubinson
Mapping The World: Facts And Meaning In Adjudication And Mediation, Robert Rubinson
Maine Law Review
This Article explores what is and what is not in adjudication and mediation, thus illuminating the profound differences between these two processes. The Article does this work in four parts. First, it offers an analysis of cognitive mapmaking and its inevitability in constructing meaning. It then explores how adjudication defines meaning in a particular way. This Article then conducts a comparable analysis of mediation. Finally, it focuses on the bridging function attorneys play between the worlds of mediation and adjudication in light of the Author’s analysis and the practical implications of this function.

Treatment And Moderator Effects In A Randomized Controlled Trial Of Culturally Informed And Flexible Family Treatment For Adolescents (Ciffta): An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Stress, Acculturation, And Parenting Practices, Marc Puccinelli
Open Access Dissertations
The present study investigated how acculturation, acculturative stress, and change in acculturative stress impact parenting practices among 141 Hispanic families randomly assigned to either Culturally Informed and Flexible Family Treatment for Adolescents (CIFFTA) or Individual Treatment As Usual (ITAU). Data were obtained from a parent study investigating the efficacy of CIFFTA vs. ITAU in addressing internalizing and externalizing disorders, and preventing future drug use and risky sexual behavior among 200 at-risk adolescents 11-14 years of age. A series of mixed model ANOVAs were conducted to investigate how Hispanic stress and parenting practices change pre to post-treatment (four months post-baseline), and …
Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins
Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
Abstract:
Many pre-professional dance studios have become consumer driven in response to the growing economic practice of neoliberalism. Neoliberal values have become more prominent in today’s economy and inevitably seeped into the lives of dancers and instructors, creating consumer based pre-professional training schools. This paper argues that the current neoliberal state of the United States is negatively affecting dance education by reducing specialized and therapeutic training and as a result numbing the creative mind and the artist’s entrepreneurial abilities. This research begins with the basic definition of neoliberalism and discusses how the theory of homo politicus and homo economicus individuals …
The Prevalence Of Insomnia On School Principals And Superintendents In Missouri, Regina Johnson Williams
The Prevalence Of Insomnia On School Principals And Superintendents In Missouri, Regina Johnson Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
Chronic insomnia can lead to depression, anxiety, cognitive difficulties, workplace absenteeism, underperformance, and high employee turnover as well as medical issues such as Alzheimer’s, hypertension, myocardial infarction, obesity, and diabetes. Researchers have argued that healthful sleep is the most important factor in predicting longevity over diet, exercise, and heredity. Previous studies consider insomnia but do not address the specific issue of the levels of insomnia experienced by school principals and superintendents in Missouri. The purpose of the study was to investigate the levels in school administrators based on gender, age, ethnicity, experience in the current role, the level of professional …

Architectural Apprenticeship: A Case Study Of Exemplary Practice, Thomas Stephen Szumlic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to describe the nature of the architectural apprenticeship experience from a curricular, instructional, social, and transformative perspective to help interns move from novice status to entry-level expertise in architectural practice. The study examined the apprenticeship experience from a holistic perspective to develop a better understanding of the architectural internship program. To meet the study purpose and inquiry, a case study research design was used to explore and describe the nature of the apprenticeship experience from the perspectives of three stakeholder groups: the interns, the mentors, and the members of the community of practice (CoP). …

From Grade Schooler To Great Star: Childhood Development And The “Golden Age” In The World Of Japanese Soccer, Elise M. Edwards
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
This chapter, by Elise Edwards, explores how, in its quest for success in the men’s FIFA World Cup, the Japan Football Association encourages parents to enroll preschoolers in its kids’ program to increase the number of children playing soccer and the quality of their training, emphasizes the importance of physical activity and play for children, and promotes the notion of a golden age between the ages of nine and twelve when the opportunity for physical development is said to peak. This popularizes a vision of a segmented childhood determined by age grades and developmental stages underpinned by a fear that …
