Forecasting The Spread And Invasive Potential Of Apple Snails (Pomacea Spp.) In Florida, Stephanie A. Reilly
Forecasting The Spread And Invasive Potential Of Apple Snails (Pomacea Spp.) In Florida, Stephanie A. Reilly
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Forecasting the potential range of invasive species is a critical component for risk assessment, monitoring, and management. However, many of these invasive species are not yet at equilibrium which can be problematic for many modelling approaches. Using the climate matching method, MaxEnt, a series of species distribution models (SDMs) and risk analysis maps were created for select apple snail species in Florida: Pomacea canaliculata, P. diffusa, and P. maculata. Apple snails, freshwater gastropods in the family Ampullariidae, are native to South America and were introduced to the United States via the pet trade approximately 40 years ago. …

Insights Into The Molecular Roles Of Zika Virus In Human Reproductive Complications And Congenital Neuropathologies, Rajendra Ghardbaran, Latchman Somenarain
Publications and Research
The recent upsurge in the association of congenital neurological disorders and infection by the Zika virus (ZIKV) has resulted in increased research focus on the biology of this flavivirus. Studies in animal models indicate that ZIKV can breach the placental barrier and selectively infect and deplete neuroprogenitor cells (NPCs) of the developing fetus, resulting in changes of brain structures, reminiscent of human microcephaly. In vitro and ex vivo studies using human cells and tissues showed that human NPCs and placental cells are targeted by ZIKV. Also of concern is the impact of ZIKV on human reproductive structures, with the potential …

Automated Classification Of Dolphin Echolocation Click Types From The Gulf Of Mexico, Kaitlin E. Fraiser, Marie A. Roch, Melissa S. Soldevilla, Lance P. Garrison, John A. Hildebrand
C-IMAGE Publications
Delphinids produce large numbers of short duration, broadband echolocation clicks which may be useful for species classification in passive acoustic monitoring efforts. A challenge in echolocation click classification is to overcome the many sources of variability to recognize underlying patterns across many detections. An automated unsupervised network-based classification method was developed to simulate the approach a human analyst uses when categorizing click types: Clusters of similar clicks were identified by incorporating multiple click characteristics (spectral shape and inter-click interval distributions) to distinguish within-type from between-type variation, and identify distinct, persistent click types. Once click types were established, an algorithm for …

Forage Selection And Habitat Architecture As Drivers Of Small Mammal Community Dynamics In An Arid, Nutrient Limited, Highly Stochastic Ecosystem, Jennifer Darby Noble
Biology ETDs
In the Northern Chihuahuan desert, grassland and shrubland co-occur as separate stable states under similar climatic conditions. In this bottom up (resource driven) system, the magnitude and timing of precipitation events drives primary production which varies from year to year and season to season. Climate change is predicted to alter precipitation regimes, and increase aridity, facilitating shrub encroachment which results in increased landscape heterogeneity and a decrease in plant biodiversity. These changes will likely result in a restructuring of small mammal communities.
We used long-term data on precipitation, primary production, and abundances of small mammals in adjacent grassland and shrubland …

Heritage And Identity Of Indigenous Peoples A Comparative Study Of American Indians And Bedouins Of Jordan, Louis Quinn Intres
Student Theses and Dissertations
Humankind is represented by an ever changing number of people groupings which are distinguishable as unique from one another by physical traits, ancestry, and genetics. We acknowledged our differences by the use of terms denoting race, ethnicity, skin color, geography, and innumerable other factors. The variances between and among cultures and civilizations easily identifies our many differences but also adds value to the human race as a whole. We also have much in common. Intrinsic to our common human-ness are the questions we each ask of ourselves: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my role in society? …
Optimization Of Parameters For The Densification (Pelletization) Of Cereal Crop Residues And Feasibility Study Of Pellet Plant Development In The State Of Arkansas From Economic Perspective, Shyam Thapa
Student Theses and Dissertations
Conventional cereal crop residues, namely, rice (Oryza sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is very abundant and readily available widely. It has been a nuisance to agronomic producers to manage these immense “so-called wastes”. The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) promulgated by the United States and The EU’s renewable energy directive mandated the substantial incorporation of renewable energy in their final energy consumption. These led to the increase in R&D’s on biomass and bioenergy products in the United States as well. Hammer mill grinds of different cereal crop residues, rice, wheat, and corn, sieved …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Small-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (SK) channels play essential roles in the regulation of cellular excitability and have been implicated in neurological and cardiovascular diseases through both animal model studies and human genetic association studies. Over the past two decades, positive modulators of SK channels such as NS309 and 1-EBIO have been developed. Our previous structural studies have identified the binding pocket of 1-EBIO and NS309 that is located at the interface between the channel and calmodulin. In this study, we took advantage of four compounds with potencies varying over three orders of magnitude, including 1-EBIO, NS309, SKS-11 (6-bromo-5-methyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione-3-oxime) and …

Carbon Nanotube Prosthetic Venous Valve, Ryan Coulton Packer
Theses and Dissertations
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a disease of the lower limbs that affects millions of people in the United States. It is categorized by constant venous hypertension, which can lead to swelling of the legs, pain, skin changes and ulcers. One of the widely known symptoms that can lead to CVI is varicose veins. The main source of the problem of CVI is incompetent venous valves. The purpose of venous valves is to direct blood through the veins to the heart and prevent retrograde flow to the lower limbs. CVI can be caused by leg injury, pregnancy, genetics, age, and …

Majority of Pakistani youth is not enthralled by the country’s rich cultural heritage. There is less public knowledge on the subject. This translates into less appreciation or interest. The academic system is largely responsible for this. It imparts a conservative history of undivided India, focuses on politics, ignores its nuanced culture. Unless students venture into specialized fields of art and humanities, most do not get stimulated to study history. Additionally, today when digital learning is on the rise, there is a lack of relevant sources on the subject. This thesis is creating a digital source. It is re-packaging an Indian …

ER stress has emerged as a signaling platform underlying the pathogenesis of various kidney diseases. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop ER stress biomarkers in the incipient stages of ER stress-mediated kidney disease, when a kidney biopsy is not yet clinically indicated, for early therapeutic intervention. Cysteine-rich with EGF-like domains 2 (CRELD2) is a newly identified protein that is induced and secreted under ER stress. For the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrate that CRELD2 can serve as a sensitive urinary biomarker for detecting ER stress in podocytes or renal tubular cells in murine models of podocyte …

Storytelling can affect wellbeing and fitness by transmitting information and reinforcing cultural codes of conduct. Despite their potential importance, the development and timing of storytelling skills, and the transmission of story knowledge have received minimal attention in studies of subsistence societies that more often focus on food production skills. Here we examine how storytelling and patterns of information transmission among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists are predicted by the changing age profiles of storytellers’ abilities and accumulated experience. We find that storytelling skills are most developed among older adults who demonstrate superior knowledge of traditional stories and who report telling stories most. We …

Macroscopic Model Of A Cilium Appendage, Laura Barber, Rachel Mickelson, Wilson Roen, Isabella Merz
Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
The goal of this project is to develop a macroscopic model of the cilia appendage and a realistic testing environment for the model. The model should be created with materials that effectively replicate the material and mechanical properties of the appendage in the human body. Additionally, the testing environment should mimic the viscous fluid that surrounds cilia in the human body to allow for more accurate testing. The fluid’s flow should be parallel to the model and induce instability in the system. This instability should force the cilia model to oscillate like a flag in the wind. Upon completion of …
Harry Potter And Control: An Inherent Power Narrative In The Wizarding World, Daniel Archer
Harry Potter And Control: An Inherent Power Narrative In The Wizarding World, Daniel Archer
Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology
Throughout recent years, fans and readers alike have come to see the magical world of Harry Potter as just that: magical. The seven-part series has become a must-read for children and adults, even raising intellectual questions among scholars. These questions have begun to address problems in Harry Potter regarding the morality and choices of its various protagonists and antagonists alike, the religious impact of J.K. Rowling’s works on children (both good and bad), and the series as a Bildungsroman narrative. Furthermore, these themes comprise the majority of our analyses on children’s literature, forming a foundation for future research in specialized …

Movement Of Adult Colorado Potato Beetles, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), In Response To Isolated Potato Plots, Michael A. Caprio, Edward J. Grafius
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Mark recapture techniques were used to determine Colorado potato beetle movement in circular arenas with isolated plots of potatoes at each ordinal direction. Post-diapause beetles aggregated on one or a few of the plants in one of the plots for each release, but not on the same plants in different releases. Differences in plant attractiveness were therefore not likely responsible for the aggregatory behavior. Aggregations were probably a result of either coordinated movement from the release site to the plants or an aggregatory signal with a range of at least 15 m. Summer adults did not aggregate on plants. Correlations …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Visual and phonotactic orientation often occur simultaneously in diurnal cicadas. and these animals generally have their largest sensory elaboration in eyes and hearing organs. Phonotactic orientation occurs principally during flight. Males and females of Magicicada cassini commonly perform low- altitude « 5 m) and short-distance « 15 m) flights in their natural habitat at flight speeds of 3 to 6 m/s. During flight, the long body axis is tilted 10° to Q , head upward. Wing beat frequencies of tethered animals at 24° to 26°C averaged 28.8 Hz. Body temperature in the field for flying individuals aver- aged 4.6°C above …

Attachment, Trauma, And Intimacy With God, Jodie Kathleen Gardner
Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology
Attachment theory provides a robust framework for understanding spiritual development and perceptions of God. An integration of research from attachment theory, affective neuroscience, emotional information processing, and trauma, is clarifying the competing research findings involving compensation and correspondence in spiritual development. Empirical evidence suggests the distinction between explicit theological beliefs and implicit perception of God as an attachment figure may explain the discrepancy between compensatory practices and correspondence, and how one interacts with God, and copes with negative life events. Studies of post-traumatic stress disorder suggest specific association between the extreme stress of trauma and alterations in emotional processing. Trauma …

The Celebration Of Anne Sexton: Defining The Writers In Hollywood's Biopics, Christina Johnson
Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology
Since the 1930’s, the Hollywood film industry has produced biographical films (biopics) that characterize the most sensational and renowned writers and poets of literary history. Although the drama of the struggling poet might seem ripe for cinematic exploration, one must question whether illustrating a poet’s life through the medium of film is an indeed felicitous avenue. For example, a plethora of Hollywood films have received brutal critiques due to their incorrect historical portrayal of the poets’ biographies. Furthermore, continuing developments in psychology are recasting the lives and work of many famous poets as intertwined with serious mental disturbances, such as …
Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony
Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony
Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology
Augustine of Hippo may never have heard of Galen of Pergamum. Three centuries separated the two, as did an almost impassable geographic and cultural divide that kept the works of Galen and other Greek writers virtually unknown in the Latin west for a millennium. Yet Galenic assumptions about human sexuality and the materiality of the soul underlie Augustine’s signature doctrine of original sin. Galen’s influence was so widely felt in the Greek-speaking east that Christians almost immediately worked his assumptions into their own theologies. Their conclusions thus became the new assumptions that found their way into the library of Ambrose …
