Retrieval Processes In Subject-Verb Agreement Computation, Nathaniel James Eversole
Retrieval Processes In Subject-Verb Agreement Computation, Nathaniel James Eversole
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
An important question in psycholinguistics is how subject-verb agreement is computed. One recent proposal is that memory retrieval processes play a key role in subject-verb agreement during sentence comprehension (Wagers et al., 2009). This model holds that when an agreeing verb (e.g., praise-s/-Ø; was/were) is encountered, a search is initiated through the memory representation of the sentence for a noun phrase (NP) with matching agreement features. When a controlling subject with matching features is available, the search ends successfully. However, in instances of a mismatch with this subject, the mechanism may (incorrectly) satisfy the agreement requirements of the verb with …

Essays On Donation And Helping Behavior, Yashar Dehdashti
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
In 2015, individual donations were at a $264.58 billion high, accounting for about 72% of overall donations. The proportion of individual donations coming from crowdfunding has had a steep, increasing pattern. In 2015, for instance, $34 billion of the individual donation came from crowdfunding sources, which has nearly doubled since 2014. This share was at about $5 billion in 2013 (Forbes 2015; www.GivingUSA.org 2017). The increasing use of the Internet and the growth in crowdfunding vehicles give rise to more increasing estimates of this share for the years to come. While it seems intuitive that sharing online crowdfunding campaigns on …

Effects Of Historical Story Telling On Student Understanding Of Nos And Mendelian Genetics, Cody Tyler Williams
Effects Of Historical Story Telling On Student Understanding Of Nos And Mendelian Genetics, Cody Tyler Williams
Dissertations
Science education researchers have long advocated the central role of the nature of science (NOS) for our understanding of scientific literacy. NOS is often interpreted narrowly to refer to a host of epistemological claims associated with the process of science and the limitations of scientific knowledge. Despite its importance, practitioners and researchers alike acknowledge that students have difficulty learning NOS and that this in part reflects how difficult it is to teach. Many teachers are uncomfortable with taking time away from traditional science content instruction. One promising method for teaching NOS and science content involves an explicit and reflective approach …

Interviews were in English. Any spontaneous Arabic that was used by participants was immediately translated …
Sex Differences In Serotonergic And Dopaminergic Mediation Of Lsd Discrimination In Rats, Keli A. Herr
Sex Differences In Serotonergic And Dopaminergic Mediation Of Lsd Discrimination In Rats, Keli A. Herr
Dissertations
After decades of opposition, a resurgence of interest in the psychotherapeutic potential of LSD is gaining acceptance in the medical community. Future acceptance of LSD as a psychotherapeutic adjuvant may be predicated on knowledge about its neural mechanisms of action. Preclinical drug discrimination assay offers an invaluable model to determine the neural mechanisms underlying LSD’s interoceptive stimulus effects. Unfortunately, current preclinical literature on LSD discrimination is based on results obtained exclusively in male subjects. The present study represents the first known preclinical assessment of possible sex differences in the discriminative stimulus effects of LSD.

To assess the importance of variation in observer effort between and within bird atlas projects and demonstrate the use of relatively simple conditional autoregressive (CAR) models for analyzing grid-based atlas data with varying effort. Pennsylvania and West Virginia, United States of America. We used varying proportions of randomly selected training data to assess whether variations in observer effort can be accounted for using CAR models and whether such models would still be useful for atlases with incomplete data. We then evaluated whether the application of these models influenced our assessment of distribution change between two atlas projects separated by twenty …
The Bystander In The Bible, The Reverend Doctor John C. Lenz Jr.
The Bystander In The Bible, The Reverend Doctor John C. Lenz Jr.
Utah Law Review
In this study I have set out to investigate the stories that Jews and Christians have told for over two thousand years. Surveying the Biblical literature, I have looked for verses, passages and stories related to the issue of the bystander’s duty to act on behalf of the victim. The issue of a person’s duty to help someone in need and to be proactively engaged on behalf of the most vulnerable is everywhere present in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. The Biblical proscriptions are not just suggestions to “do the right thing” but divine ethical demands to action on …
Upstanders, Whistle-Blowers, And Rescuers, Martha Minow
Upstanders, Whistle-Blowers, And Rescuers, Martha Minow
Utah Law Review
Communities of responsibility and the cultures that nurture them take many steps to build. An important step is to honor remarkable individuals with courage and commitment. Raphael Lemkin, Benjamin Ferencz, Luis Moreno Ocampo, Emmanuel Uwurukundo, Samantha Power, filmmaker Edet Belzberg, and Victor Koningsberger deserve recognition and honor. At the same time, we need to emphasize that an upstander does not need extraordinary qualities. Ordinary people can and do stand up in small and big ways against oppression and injustice. Education can help. Speeches can help. When we honor heroes, we should not simply recognize individual courage. Doing so can help …
How Adults In Developmental Reading Courses Describe Their Educational Life Experiences: A Phenomenological Case Study Examining Whether Experiences Influence Reading Attitudes And Decision-Making Processes, Ashley Paige Reece Armour
How Adults In Developmental Reading Courses Describe Their Educational Life Experiences: A Phenomenological Case Study Examining Whether Experiences Influence Reading Attitudes And Decision-Making Processes, Ashley Paige Reece Armour
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological case study is to explore the reading attitudes and decision-making skills of college freshmen enrolled in remedial language arts courses. The theoretical framework guiding this study is qualitative phenomenology explained by Baxter and Jack (2008). This specific type of research “provides tools for researchers to study complex phenomena within their contexts” and the findings help researchers evaluate program, design, and intervention methods, which is pertinent to the discovery of prevailing reading attitudes among struggling students and allows researchers to prevent, adjust, and improve these attitudes in future students (Baxter and Jack, 2008; Yin, 2003). This …

The Effect Of Oral Feedback On Perceived Classroom Community In Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Boyles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The ongoing trend in research regarding feedback has been to explore quantitative assessment. Garnering support more recently is qualitative narrative feedback in support of formative assessment. This type of feedback offers insight into expectations as well as offer additional knowledge gained. It enables students to improve their performance with its timeliness and clarity. Research in the area of oral feedback for college students as a more effective formative assessment and tool for learning is needed. This study examined the effects of oral feedback on the students in four undergraduate courses at a public university in Florida. 68 students were recruited …
Immunological Strategies To Study Grp170 In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Raven P. Baxter-Christian
Immunological Strategies To Study Grp170 In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Raven P. Baxter-Christian
Biology Theses
Characterization of the ER protein folding chaperone GRP170 of Caenorhabditis elegans could be greatly facilitated by an antibody which recognized the chaperone. Antibodies have not been raised against nematode GRP170. Groups have prepared polyclonal antibodies against vertebrate forms of GRP170. My thesis goal was to investigate whether anti-vertebrate GRP170 antibodies can recognize the nematode homologue on a standard Western Blot assay. Sequences of antigens that groups used to generate anti-vertebrate GRP170 antibodies were analyzed. Peptides used by Ruan et al. (2013), which correspond to regions of human GRP170, shared greatest sequence similarity with nematode GRP170. I investigated whether the Ruan …

A Stable Algorithm For Divergence-Free And Curl-Free Radial Basis Functions In The Flat Limit, Kathryn Primrose Drake
A Stable Algorithm For Divergence-Free And Curl-Free Radial Basis Functions In The Flat Limit, Kathryn Primrose Drake
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Radial basis functions (RBFs) were originally developed in the 1970s for interpolating scattered topographic data. Since then they have become increasingly popular for other applications involving the approximation of scattered, scalar-valued data in two and higher dimensions, especially data collected on the surface of a sphere. In the late 2000s, matrix-valued RBFs were introduced for approximating divergence-free and curl-free vector fields on the surface of a sphere from scattered samples, which arise naturally in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The intriguing property of these RBFs is that the resulting vector-valued approximations analytically preserve the divergence-free or curl-free properties of the field. …
Lysenin Channels As Single Molecule Nano-Sensors And Nano-Switches For Controlled Membrane Permeability, Nisha Shrestha
Lysenin Channels As Single Molecule Nano-Sensors And Nano-Switches For Controlled Membrane Permeability, Nisha Shrestha
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Pore-forming toxins secreted by various evolutionarily distant organisms are important components of their innate defense mechanisms. These toxins may kill the target cells by inserting un-regulated channels into the plasma membrane. Tampering with the otherwise well-controlled membrane permeability alters cell homeostasis by contributing to un-controlled dissipation of both chemical and electrical gradients, which is often an essential component of virulence mechanisms leading to cell death. However, the same ability to create nanoscopic conducting pathways, i.e. nanopores, has been exploited for creating powerful tools in nano-biotechnology. Single nano-channels reconstituted in artificial planar lipid membranes are extremely versatile sensors that are capable …
In Vitro And In Vivo Studies Of Chemotherapeutic Doxorubicin Analogs, Sangphil Moon
In Vitro And In Vivo Studies Of Chemotherapeutic Doxorubicin Analogs, Sangphil Moon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Anthracyclines remain widely prescribed and successful anticancer agents, despite serious side effects. Doxorubicin (DOX) is the most prominent anthracycline used to treat many cancers, including hematologic malignancies, soft-tissue sarcomas, cancers of the head and neck, and breast cancer. However, the clinical application of DOX is limited by the development of life-threatening cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. The main mechanisms of cardiotoxicity are thought to be mediated through the C-13 carbonyl and quinone ring structures in DOX. To improve the anticancer activity and reduce the cardiotoxic side effects of DOX, two synthetic analogs (GPX-150 and GPX-160) were developed and tested for …
Power Analysis Of Longitudinal Data With Time-Dependent Covariates Using Generalized Method Of Moments, Niloofar Ramezani
Power Analysis Of Longitudinal Data With Time-Dependent Covariates Using Generalized Method Of Moments, Niloofar Ramezani
Dissertations
Longitudinal data occur in different fields such as biomedical and health studies, education, engineering, and social studies. Planning advantageous research projects with both high power and minimum sample size is an important step in any study. The extensive use of longitudinal data in different fields and the importance of their power estimation, yet the limited resources about their respective power estimation tools, made it worthwhile to study their power estimation techniques. The presence of time-dependent covariates triggers the need to use more efficient models such as generalized method of moments than the existing models which are based on generalized estimating …
Typography And The Evolution Of Hebrew Alphabetic Script: Writing Method Of The Sofer, Shayna Tova Blum
Typography And The Evolution Of Hebrew Alphabetic Script: Writing Method Of The Sofer, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
Typography is the study of language letterforms, phonographic alphabetic characters that, when combined with additional characters, form words and/or sentences to express an idea and communicate a message to an audience. The history of typographic design dates back to early civilization and the invention of alphabetic writing systems, formulated and processed through the literary skills of the Hebrew Scribe Ezra whose knowledge and practice offered a significant contribution within a predominantly oral society. By examining the history of Hebrew typography through the discourse of biblical writing systems and alphabetic design, the article addresses the development of Hebrew scripts evolving from …

Nanoaerosolized particle (dia.<200 >nm) antibiotic inhalation therapy was tested to treat pneumonic tularemia in mice caused by Francisella novicida infection. Very limited experimental techniques are available to properly estimate inhaled doses and distribution of the drug inside the mouse lungs. To overcome this problem, computational simulation of particle deposition based on the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model was employed to simulate in vivo experimental conditions which included nasal breathing with whole body exposure to the antibiotic in the form of nano-aerosolized medicine. The deposition results were compared with several in vivo experimental data reported in literature; and satisfactory agreements …200>

Eye Repair In Xenopus Laevis, Cindy Xuan-Mai Kha
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Eye development in vertebrates of complex steps that include specific interactions of the neuroectoderm and overlying head ectoderm. The African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis (X. laevis), has a well-characterize eye developmental pathway and is an established model for eye regeneration research. Additionally, Xenopus frogs have high regenerative abilities to regenerate individual eye tissues such as the retina, lens, and cornea. However, it was previously shown that the removal of the specified eye field during the neurulation stage or an eye during the swimming tadpole stage does not permit an eye to regenerate. Here we will describe a model for investigating …
Evolution Of Caffeine Biosynthetic Enzymes And Pathways In Flowering Plants, Ruiqi Huang
Evolution Of Caffeine Biosynthetic Enzymes And Pathways In Flowering Plants, Ruiqi Huang
Dissertations
Convergent evolution generally refers to the independent evolution of similar biological function more than once in unrelated species. Caffeine is thought to have evolved by convergence, and is naturally produced through secondary metabolism in plants to defend against pathogen attack and insect feeding or to attract pollinators. The same caffeine biosynthetic pathway has been elucidated in Camellia (tea) and Coffea (coffee), in which xanthosine is sequentially methylated to caffeine via 7-methylxanthine and theobromine. However, although the same catalysis pathway is used, different (paralogous) enzymes in the SAMT/BAMT/theobromine synthase (SABATH) multigene family are used in the two species. In my dissertation, …
Decoding Nonverbal Ability: A Theoretical Model For The Acquisition Of Nonverbal Decoding Skill, Julia Berger
Decoding Nonverbal Ability: A Theoretical Model For The Acquisition Of Nonverbal Decoding Skill, Julia Berger
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Nonverbal communication adds multiple layers of meaning to social interaction above that conveyed by words. The comprehension of these nonverbal messages depends on individual ability which varies greatly between individuals. Variation in nonverbal communication ability and the variables of influence that have been associated with it over decades of research are the topic of this research project. Variables that have been correlated to nonverbal communication skill were used to develop a theory for the development of this skill and construct an evidence-based theoretical model that provides an explanation for nonverbal skill acquisition and variability. This model was also analyzed for …
Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson
Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
John Dewey’s progressive education differed from the classical model. The entrenchment of Dewey’s progressive education at all levels of education has led to a decline in academic performance. The modern ideas of American education hardly resemble the ones it was founded on. This paper looks at a model of classical education adopted by the American founders—as well as classical education itself—and to Dewey, the preeminent scholar and philosopher of American, progressive education, whose aim was to develop an egalitarian society trained in non-traditional academics. The paper also looks at Dewey’s child-centered model that contributes to sinking academic performance, and to …

The β-1, 3 (d)-glucan (β-glucan) present in the cell wall of Candida albicans induces epigenetic changes in human monocytes resulting in primed macrophages exhibiting increased cytokine responsiveness to reinfection. This phenomenon is referred to as trained immunity or innate immune memory. However, whether β-glucan can reprogramme murine monocytes in vitro or induce lasting effects in vivo has yet to be elucidated. Thus, purified murine spleen-derived monocytes were primed with β-glucan in vitro and assessed for markers of differentiation and survival. Important macrophage cell markers during monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation were downregulated and survival enhanced due to partial inhibition of apoptosis. Increased survival …

In previous studies, we have isolated several marine indole alkaloids and evaluated them in the forced swim test (FST) and locomotor activity test, revealing their potential as antidepressant and sedative drug leads. Amongst the reported metabolites to display such activities was 5-bromo-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Owing to the importance of the judicious introduction of halogens into drug candidates, we synthesized two series built on a 2-(1H-indol-3-yl)-N,N-dimethylethanamine scaffold with different halogen substitutions. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro and in vivo antidepressant and sedative activities using the mouse forced swim and locomotor activity tests. Receptor binding studies of these compounds to …
