Magnesium Isotope Investigation Of Stromatolitic Knobs In Storr’S Lake, San Salvador, Bahamas: Implications For Organomineralization And Laminae Formation, Zijian Li
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Storr’s Lake, a hypersaline lake located on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, contains modern, fine-grained stromatolites. This study focused on two morphological types of stromatolitic mounds in Storr’s Lake (pinnacle mound and plateau-mushroom) and systematically investigated their mineralogy, elemental abundance, carbon, oxygen and magnesium (Mg) isotopic signature to gain insights into the organomineralization process and laminae formation of stromatolites. In addition, the hydrochemistry of Storr’s Lake was characterized by in situ measurement of water parameters, elemental analysis, and Mg isotope investigation. Cations and anions analysis indicates the lake is spatially homogenous and shows little seasonal variation. Mg isotope analysis of the …
Retrotransposons Are The Major Contributors To The Expansion Of The Drosophila Ananassae Muller F Element, Wilson Leung, Gerard Mcneil
Retrotransposons Are The Major Contributors To The Expansion Of The Drosophila Ananassae Muller F Element, Wilson Leung, Gerard Mcneil
Publications and Research
The discordance between genome size and the complexity of eukaryotes can partly be attributed to differences in repeat density. The Muller F element (5.2 Mb) is the smallest chromosome in Drosophila melanogaster, but it is substantially larger (.18.7 Mb) in D. ananassae. To identify the major contributors to the expansion of the F element and to assess their impact, we improved the genome sequence and annotated the genes in a 1.4-Mb region of the D. ananassae F element, and a 1.7-Mb region from the D element for comparison. We find that transposons (particularly LTR and LINE retrotransposons) are major contributors …
Morphological Integration Between The Face And Dentition Throughout Ontogeny, Allison Nesbitt
Morphological Integration Between The Face And Dentition Throughout Ontogeny, Allison Nesbitt
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Modern humans have flatter faces, wider palates and smaller teeth compared to chimpanzees and our early human ancestors. Many hypotheses concerning the evolution of the human face assume a relationship between the face and the teeth. It is likely that the face and teeth develop in a coordinated manner throughout the growth and development of an organism due to similar developmental origins, and functions, and the teeth residing in the maxillae. What is not fully understood is whether the face and teeth are two separate units (modules) that can evolve independently or if they are tightly correlated (integrated) during evolution. …

Essays On Patent Transfer Behavior In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Yupeng Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
While large pharmaceutical companies continue to dominate drug development and patent acquisition, their timing of drug patent acquisition and subsequent payoffs remain poorly understood. In an effort to examine the patent acquisition timing in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, both empirical and theoretical approaches are used to analyze the effects of firm characteristics on the timing of patent purchases. In Chapter 1, I construct a unique dataset using publicly-available data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and examine the purchasing behavior of public firms within the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. I focus on the role of firm size …

Zika virus (ZIKV) remained largely quiescent for nearly six decades after its first appearance in 1947. ZIKV reappeared after 2007, resulting in a declaration of an international “public health emergency” in 2016 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Until this time, ZIKV was considered to induce only mild illness, but it has now been established as the cause of severe clinical manifestations, including fetal anomalies, neurological problems, and autoimmune disorders. Infection during pregnancy can cause congenital brain abnormalities, including microcephaly and neurological degeneration, and in other cases, Guillain-Barré syndrome, making infections with ZIKV a substantial public health concern. Genomic and …
A Functional Subnetwork Approach To Designing Synthetic Nervous Systems That Control Legged Robot Locomotion, Nicholas Szczecinski, Alexander J. Hunt, Roger Quinn
A Functional Subnetwork Approach To Designing Synthetic Nervous Systems That Control Legged Robot Locomotion, Nicholas Szczecinski, Alexander J. Hunt, Roger Quinn
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A dynamical model of an animal’s nervous system, or synthetic nervous system (SNS), is a potentially transformational control method. Due to increasingly detailed data on the connectivity and dynamics of both mammalian and insect nervous systems, controlling a legged robot with an SNS is largely a problem of parameter tuning. Our approach to this problem is to design functional subnetworks that perform specific operations, and then assemble them into larger models of the nervous system. In this paper, we present networks that perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, differentiation, and integration of incoming signals. Parameters are set within each subnetwork to …

Physiological Parameters, Isoenzymes And Hormonal Profiling In Different Varieties Of Date Palm In United Arab Emirates, Saeed Rashed Hamad Al Shamsi
Aridland Agriculture Theses
The present investigation was carried out to explore the physiological changes in early, mid and late varieties of date palms in United Arab Emirates. The concentrations of biochemicals and antioxidant compounds, activities of antioxidant enzymes with their isoenzyme profiles, endogenous phytohormone contents were studied from preflowering, flowering, and post-flowering stages. Two varieties each from early (Shaham, Khanezi), mid (Barhee, Nabthasaif) and late (Khasab, Fardh) flowering types were used in the study. The protein content was higher in early varieties in preflowering stage, but lower in other two varieties. The phenol showed an opposite trend to protein. Ascorbic acid, reduced glutathione …

Although specialized interactions, including those involving plants and their pollinators, are often invoked to explain high species diversity, they are rarely explored at macroevolutionary scales. We investigate the dynamic evolution of hummingbird and bat pollination syndromes in the centropogonid clade (Lobelioideae: Campanulaceae), an Andean-centered group of ∼550 angiosperm species. We demonstrate that flowers hypothesized to be adapted to different pollinators based on flower color fall into distinct regions of morphospace, and this is validated by morphology of species with known pollinators. This supports the existence of …

© 2017 The Author(s). Using nationwide survey data, we investigate U.S. meat goat producer preferences and willingness to pay for meat goat breeding stock attributes. Discrete choice experiments were employed, and mixed logit and latent class models were used for analysis. Results showed that producers preferred animals that were highly masculine/feminine, had good structure and soundness, and were of the Boer breed, whereas they preferred fewer animals that were older, of Kiko and Spanish breeds, and priced higher. Significant preference heterogeneity was found among the respondents. Larger-scale producers had greater preference for high masculinity/femininity, good structure and soundness, and Boer …

© The Author (2017). Retinoic acid (RA), a bioactive metabolite of Vitamin A, is a critical mediator of cell differentiation. RA blocks adipogenesis, but mechanisms remain to be established. ZFP423 is a key transcription factor maintaining white adipose identity. We found that RA inhibits Zfp423 expression and adipogenesis via blocking DNA demethylation in the promoter of Zfp423, a process mediated by growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible protein alpha (GADD45A). RA induces the partnering between retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and tumor suppressor inhibitor of growth protein 1 (ING1), which prevents the formation of GADD45A and ING1 complex necessary for locus-specific Zfp423 DNA …
Social Learning And Its Effect On Conservation Efforts In The Barrens Topminnow: An Evaluation Of Conditioning And Social Learning As A Viable Longterm Solution To Evolutionary Traps, Elijah Reyes
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The invasive Western Mosquitofish (WMF), Gambusia affinis, has facilitated the extinction and endangerment of multiple freshwater fish species, including the Barrens Topminnow (BTM), Fundulus julisia. In my study, I investigated if BTMs are capable of socially learning conditioned predator recognition, and I hypothesized that BTMs are capable of social learning and that such learning might improve survival of BTMs. To explore the role of conditioning and subsequent learning in the conservation of BTMs, I conducted a series of experiments in which I 1) attempted to condition BTMs to exhibit antipredator behavior when faced with WMF, and 2) created a situation …

Habitat-Specific Fitness Benefits Of Sociality In Octodon Degus, Madeline Klees Strom
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Recent debate has focused on how ecology shapes the evolution of group-living and cooperation in social vertebrates. Evidence suggests that group-living and cooperation enhance reproductive success under harsh local conditions in some species. Across two years, I studied two populations of Octodon degus, a plurally breeding rodent, to answer three questions: (1) Does living in large groups and having strong social network strength improve access to resources in harsh environments? (2) Does increased access to resources improve the reproductive success of group-living females? (3) Does living in large groups and having strong social network strength improve reproductive success of females …

Ion Channel Signaling Influences Cellular Proliferation And Phagocyte Activity During Axolotl Tail Regeneration, Brandon M. Franklin, S. Randal Voss, Jeffrey L. Osborn
Biology Faculty Publications
Little is known about the potential for ion channels to regulate cellular behaviors during tissue regeneration. Here, we utilized an amphibian tail regeneration assay coupled with a chemical genetic screen to identify ion channel antagonists that altered critical cellular processes during regeneration. Inhibition of multiple ion channels either partially (anoctamin1/Tmem16a, anoctamin2/Tmem16b, KV2.1, KV2.2, L-type CaV channels and H/K ATPases) or completely (GlyR, GABAAR, KV1.5 and SERCA pumps) inhibited tail regeneration. Partial inhibition of tail regeneration by blocking the calcium activated chloride channels, anoctamin1&2, was associated with a reduction of cellular proliferation in …

Water scarcity and drought are major threats to water security. Quantifying and defining boundaries between these threats are necessary to properly assess water security of a region. A comprehensive assessment of water security in terms of water scarcity, water vulnerability and drought can address water policy issues related to hydrological conditions and their interactions with societal and ecosystem functioning. Therefore, study of water security can provide useful information to multiple stakeholders. The overarching goal of this thesis is to improve water security in river basins around the world. To demonstrate our proposed methods, we selected Savannah River Basin (SRB) as …

Presidential electors are generally expected to vote for the candidate who won their state's election, and those who do not are referred to as "faithless electors." A majority of states have laws of varying types that bind their electors to vote for the winning presidential candidate. The 2016 election, for the first time in modern history, produced a serious movement urging electors to cast faithless votes against Donald Trump. Although this movement was not successful, 2016 saw the most faithless electors in recent history by a large margin. Three separate, ultimately unsuccessful, lawsuits were filed by would-be faithless electors in …

Heme oxygenase from Leptospira interrogans is an important virulence factor. During catalysis, redox equivalents are provided to this enzyme by the plastidic-type ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase also found in L. interrogans. This process may have evolved to aid this bacterial pathogen to obtain heme-iron from their host and enable successful colonization. Herein we report the crystal structure of the heme oxygenase-heme complex at …

Background: In the 20th century, periods of macroeconomic growth have been associated with increases in population mortality. Factors that cause or mitigate this association are not well understood. Evidence suggests that social policy may buffer the deleterious impact of economic growth. We sought to explore associations between changing unemployment (as a proxy for economic change) and trends in mortality over 30 years in the context of varying social protection expenditures. Methods: We model change in all-cause mortality in 21 OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries from 1980 to 2010. Data from the Comparative Welfare States Data Set and …

The dietary derived isoflavone and oestrogen analogue, genistein, is known to perturb fundamental reproductive events such as implantation and embryo cleavage. However the question of whether genistein is able to traverse the oviduct epithelial monolayer and impact oviduct fluid secretion remains unclear. This study tests these research questions using a bioartificial oviduct to show that genistein permeates the oviduct lumen in vitro with a biphasic (burst and plateau) kinetic profile, faster than spontaneous diffusion, and alters the amino acid composition of in vitro derived oviduct fluid (ivDOF) but not as an oestrogen analogue. In addition to offering insights into the …

As a result of Hobby Lobby, and the seemingly expanding notion of the corporation as a person within the traditional autonomous rights paradigm, a tension has developed between corporation as subject and corporation as institution. This evolution of corporation as person also highlights the problem of providing resilience to vulnerable subjects whose competing vulnerabilities are situated in the same corporate environment. Addressing this issue is of critical importance where employment has become the conduit for the responsive state to provide resilience to so many subjects, as well as the site of social institution building because the nature of our workplace …

Chapter 7. The role of pottery in Arctic hunter-gatherer lifeways is analyzed through this investigation of how pottery procurement, production, use, and discard was incorporated into past hunter-gatherer seasonal activities. This case study highlights the complexity of making pottery at northern latitudes and the time investment, technological skill, and resources required of northern potters to resolve these challenges; mobility and environmental constraints unique to northern Alaska shape the character, production, and use of ceramic vessels.
