Field-Directed Fabrication Of Hierarchical Structures Toward Electrochemical Applications, Anirudh Balram
Field-Directed Fabrication Of Hierarchical Structures Toward Electrochemical Applications, Anirudh Balram
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The ubiquity of hierarchical structures in nature indicates an inherent advantage to having morphological features comprised of multiple length scales. Such structures help maximize interfacial surface area, allowing for efficient chemical reactions and mass transport despite volumetric constraints. In electrochemical applications such as batteries, supercapacitors, electrolysis, fuel cells, catalysis etc. there is a similar necessity to maximize electrochemically active surface area to facilitate facile charge and mass transport. Inspired by examples in nature, this work seeks to develop scalable fabrication techniques to obtain hierarchically structured high-performance electrodes for electrochemical applications, with a focus on energy applications. Particular emphasis was laid …
Metabolic, Hemodynamic And Electrophysiological Effects Of Transcranial Photobiomodulation (Tpbm) On The Human Brain, Xinlong Wang
Metabolic, Hemodynamic And Electrophysiological Effects Of Transcranial Photobiomodulation (Tpbm) On The Human Brain, Xinlong Wang
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Photobiomodulation (PBM) refers to the use of red-to-near-infrared light to stimulate cellular functions for physiological or clinical benefits. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is a noninvasive form of cerebral photobiomodulation that has been observed with various improvements in human cognitive functions. The mechanism of tPBM is assumed to rely on photon absorption by cytochrome c oxidase (CCO), the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain that catalyzes the reduction of oxygen for energy metabolism. However, few studies have objectively investigated hemodynamic, metabolic and electrophysiological response of the human brain to tPBM. To address this gap, my dissertation research has focused on objective …
Understanding Key Genetic Mutations And Molecular Alterations On Increasing Migration, Viability, Drug Resistance Of Malignant Brain Tumor In Confinement, Loan Thuy Bui
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
There are more than 120 types of primary brain and central nervous system tumors that affect people of all ages. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), for example, is the most frequent type of brain cancers and also among the deadliest of all cancers due to its high invasiveness and resistance to radiation and chemotherapy. Recently, most genetic mutations of malignant brain tumors have been well characterized, but the focus on migrating cancers that directly cause invasion is still in its infancy. We have learned from the literature that most glioma cells infiltrate surrounding brain tissue via by the confined tracks, and fascinated …
Naturally-Derived Extracellular Matrix Materials For Meniscus Repair And Regeneration, Jinglei Wu
Naturally-Derived Extracellular Matrix Materials For Meniscus Repair And Regeneration, Jinglei Wu
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Human meniscus plays critical roles in a knee joint by transmitting weight-bearing force, absorbing shock, and stabilizing the knee joint capsule. Meniscal injuries are mainly caused by sports-related activities and age-related degeneration, which significantly reduce the life quality of patients. The injured meniscus has a very limited self-healing capability due to its poorly vascularized nature, specifically in the inner area. Surgical interventions are required to treat the injured meniscus, but the current treatments are not satisfactory because the post-surgery complications are frequently observed. Therefore, tissue regeneration approaches are developed to repair and functionally restore injured menisci. In this thesis, we …

This report presents preliminary results of a study investigating the groundwater laws and regulations of thirteen U.S. states. The purpose of the project is eventually to compile and present the groundwater laws and regulations of every state in the United States that could then be used in a series of comparisons of groundwater governance principles, strategies, issues, and challenges. Professor Gabriel Eckstein at Texas A&M University School of Law and Professor Amy Hardberger at Saint Mary’s University Law School developed a matrix to ascertain chief components and characteristics of the groundwater legal regime of each state. Student researchers then used …
Growth And Stress Response Mechanisms Underlying Post-Feeding Organ Regenerative Growth In Snakes, Audra Leann Andrew
Growth And Stress Response Mechanisms Underlying Post-Feeding Organ Regenerative Growth In Snakes, Audra Leann Andrew
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Snakes represent an emerging model in biological research and provide a valuable system for studying multiple extreme phenotypes unparallel to those seen in mammals. Recently, snakes have become increasingly used in studies of extreme organ regenerative growth due to the ability of some species to rapidly and reversibly upregulate organ form and function upon feeding. The predominant model used to study this feeding response has been the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus) because of the particulalry extreme nature of this post-feeding response in this species. Specifically, the wet masses of major organs increase by 50-100% within just 48 hours post-feeding …
The Motivational Pull Of Video Game Feedback, Rules, And Social Interaction: Another Self-Determination Theory Approach, Ryan Rogers
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
This paper argues that most video game enjoyment can be understood in terms of the type of feedback used, the rules set out by the game and the social elements of the game - concepts that have been identified as critical to video games. Self-determination theory (SDT) is used as a lens for understanding the mechanism by which these traits might lead to enjoyment. Specifically, the argument is that feedback, rules, and social elements of games will fulfill the dimensions of SDT - competence autonomy, and relatedness. Then, the dimensions of SDT will predict enjoyment. Participants were presented with a …

Opioid And Naloxone Prescribing Practices In Mississippi, Rebecca Brown, Brittany Clayton, Alissa Damiens, Natalie Keyes, Gary A. Mcpherson, Anna E. Wiygul
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine whether primary care providers (PCPs) in Mississippi are following the selected Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines published in March 2016 for prescribing opioids for chronic, non-cancer pain. The study also sought to determine if the selected providers prescribed naloxone for opioid overdose reversal. Drug overdoses have increased exponentially in the last 3 decades in the United States (Doyon, Aks, & Schaeffer, 2014) — leading to opioid overdose becoming the most frequent cause of accidental death. Opioid overdose death rates are so high the CDC declared it a problem of …

Cognitive Screening Practices Of Primary Care Providers In Mississippi, Andrea Branch
MSN Research Projects
Cognitive impairment is one of the predominant diagnoses that in its early stages remain undetected in the primary healthcare setting. With Alzheimer's and dementia on the rise, it is paramount that cognitive impairment be detected promptly so preventative measures may be initiated to slow or avert progression of this dreaded disease. The annual wellness visit, a Medicare benefit added by the Affordable Care Act of 2010, recommends primary care providers conduct a screening to detect cognitive impairment during the course of this assessment. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services failed to recommend a specific screening tool to be utilized …
Effects Of Early Adolescent Exposure To D-Amphetamine In A Rodent Model Of Nicotine Reward, Eric Louis Harvey
Effects Of Early Adolescent Exposure To D-Amphetamine In A Rodent Model Of Nicotine Reward, Eric Louis Harvey
Dissertations
Previous studies with rodents have found that adolescent exposure to psychoactive drugs can alter neurophysiology and produce behavioral effects that persist into adulthood. While several studies have examined the effects of adolescent exposure to nicotine on the subsequent rewarding value of various drugs of abuse in adulthood, to date, no known studies have examined the converse of this relationship. d-Amphetamine (i.e., dextroamphetamine, ProCentra®) is a potent psychostimulant that is commonly used in the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adolescents. The present study assessed the effects of adolescent exposure to d-amphetamine on the rewarding value of nicotine in …

Novel Animal Models Of Chronic Stress And ‘Chemobrain’: Behavioral, Physiological, And Molecular Biomarkers, Moriah L. Jacobson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Chronic stress underlies several disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and complicates patient responses to life threatening diseases such as cancer, making this condition an important public health concern. The gene regulatory network integrates several signals, yielding a particular pattern of gene expression. Changes in global gene expression (transcriptome) may provide a reliable measure of the intensity/dosage of stress or drug an animal has experienced as well as distinguish different types of stress or drug experiences. Our studies used RNA sequencing (RNAseq) to analyze the transcriptome in several tissues from rat models of chronic stress and chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI …
Role And Regulation Of Sphingomyelin Synthase 1 In Leukemia, Sitapriya Moorthi
Role And Regulation Of Sphingomyelin Synthase 1 In Leukemia, Sitapriya Moorthi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Sphingomyelin synthase (SMS1 and SMS2) enzymes constitute a class of transferases, belonging to the sphingolipid pathway and they catalyze the synthesis of sphingomyelin (SM). The role of sphingolipids has transformed, from being vital components of cellular membranes to mediators of various biological processes, such as proliferation, regulation of the cell cycle and differentiation. SMS catalyzes the transfer of the phosphorylcholine moiety from phosphatidylcholine to ceramide (Cer), generating SM and diacylglycerol (DAG). The role of SMS in cancer stems from its ability to regulate the levels of two bioactive lipids, Cer (mediator of anti-proliferative effects) and DAG (a mitogenic lipid), …

Transnational Images In A Global Frame: Film Festivals And Taiwan Cinema Through The Lens Of Hou Hsiao-Hsien And Tsai Ming-Liang, Peijen Beth Tsai
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the geopolitical and cultural dynamics between European and Taiwan cinema. I explore how art house cinema were circulated and received at major European festivals—Berlin, Cannes, and Venice—to question the role that film festivals play in influencing new cinematic styles for local, regional, and global consumption. Before Taiwan New Cinema became world renowned, films from Taiwan, despite sporadic forays into international festivals, had hitherto been prescribed as coming from a non-national nation (Chinese Taipei), or a nation without nationality (Taiwan, Province of China). If Taiwan cinema’s success in the film festival circuits is due to its proliferation of …
Effects Of Labeling And Consumer Health Trends On Preferred Ground Beef Color Characteristics, Fat Content, And Palatability In Simulated Retail Display, Fred W. Pohlman Ii
Effects Of Labeling And Consumer Health Trends On Preferred Ground Beef Color Characteristics, Fat Content, And Palatability In Simulated Retail Display, Fred W. Pohlman Ii
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nutritional concerns and attempts to limit fat in the diet over the past decades have impacted the protein market, decreasing red meat consumption as well as prompting the advent of lean and extra lean ground beef. Such lean blends of ground beef may suffer in palatability, however, resulting in less satisfied consumers turning to other protein sources. While consumers are demanding lean ground beef, fatter blends may be more palatable. This study seeks to bridge the gap between perceived health and palatability by evaluating preferred fat content and instrumental color characteristics between labeled and unlabeled packages of ground beef in …

Epigenetic Mechanism Of Regulation Of Hox Genes And Neurotransmitters Via Hormones And Lncrna, Paromita Deb
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are classes of environmental contaminants whose exposure even at very low concentrations interfere with normal endocrine signaling and induce many adverse health effects including increased risk of birth defects, diabetes, obesity, abnormal reproduction, and cancer. EDC exposure alters the epigenetic programming of cells resulting in altered gene expression and regulation and cell signaling. These EDCs include bisphenol-A (BPA), diethylstilbesterol (DES), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), phthalates, phytoestrogens, methoxychlor, fungicides, insecticide, herbicide, and some heavy metals. As a part of my work, I have investigated epigenetic impacts of EDCs on HOX (homeobox containing genes) genes, which are critical players …

Enrichment And Identification Of Disulfide Bonded Peptides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Pooja Rajeshbhai Ramanuj
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Proteins are Comprised of different amino acids which can undergo various modifications known as post-translational modifications (PTMs). Amino acid’s side chains are the most common sites for the PTMs. Cysteine side chain can undergo several PTMs and one very common one is disulfide bond formation. Disulfide bond aids in maintaining protein tertiary structures, its identification is an inevitable aspect in studying protein functions. Furthermore, disulfide bonds are potential targets to develop new protein therapeutics for life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Literature surveys revealed several methods to identify disulfide bonds, which require either high quality sample or are highly laborious. Moreover, …

In recent years, rare earth sulfides have received attention for their interesting thermoelectric and optical properties.1 They exhibit a fairly wide range of colors, which makes them promising candidates as pigments.2 The demand for red colored pigments in industrial application is high but the current ones in use are not environmentally friendly. This has garnered attention towards the rare-earth sulfides. Among the rare-earth sulfide compounds, Ce₂S₃ is a highperformance pigment of red color. It is particularly interesting as doping with alkaline earth metal stabilizes the structure of Ce₂S₃ at low temperature and plays a role in tuning its color from …
Enrichment Of Volcanogenic Trace Elements In A Continuous Subsurface Eagle Ford Core In South Texas And The Origin Of The Oceanic Anoxic Event Ii At The Cenomanian-Turonian (C/T) Boundary, Daniel Valencia
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas is a dark grey to black, sporadically laminated, organic rich carbonaceous mud rock located in the subsurface (~13,000), of the hydrocarbon producing shale-oil formation. This black shale formation was deposited contemporaneously worldwide across the Cenomanian-Turonian (C/T) boundary and records the Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-II). Geochronological and geochemical analysis of a ~300ft long continuous South Texas Eagle Ford Shale core was conducted to further constrain the sub-surface nature of the formation. Major, minor and trace element concentrations were analyzed by ED-XRF to characterize the local geochemical heterogeneity in the formation. Total Organic …

Change Of Brain Network Connectivity Among Different Human Vigilance States Investigated By Eeg, Yudhajit Das
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Understanding the brain network connectivity associated with human vigilance states, to investigate the basic neural processes that underlie complex higher-order cognitive operations and functional domains, has become an important topic in biological science research. Also, there is growing concern about the prevalence and effects of sleep deprivation. Given the increasingly fast-paced nature of our society, the focus of the researchers is not only to identify the changes occurring within the brain during sleeping stages, but also to extract meaningful psycho-behavioral reason behind such change patterns which can lead to an improved understanding of brain activity during sleep which may further …
Arthropod Food Webs In Arctic Tundra: Trophic Interactions And Responses To Global Change, Ashley Lila Asmus
Arthropod Food Webs In Arctic Tundra: Trophic Interactions And Responses To Global Change, Ashley Lila Asmus
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Arctic ecosystems are undergoing rapid change. Terrestrial arctic arthropods (insects, spiders and others) are not only appreciably diverse, but also sensitive to their environment. As such, tundra arthropod communities and food webs could provide critical insight into the ecological consequences of global change in the Arctic. My dissertation explores the underpinnings of arthropod community and food web dynamics in arctic tundra. First, I explore how changes to plant production and plant community composition affect arthropod community composition, trophic structure and food web function. I also explored one key trophic interaction: cannibalism among wolf spiders, the most abundant terrestrial predator in …
Protein/Nucleic-Acid Structure And Sequence Requirements For Specifying Second-Strand Cleavage And Second-Strand Synthesis During The Integration Of The Site-Specific Line R2bm, Aruna Govindaraju
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Long interspersed nucleotide elements (LINEs) are major drivers of genomic landscaping events in many eukaryotic genomes. LINEs encode a multifunctional protein that binds to their own mRNA, recognize and cleave target DNA, and performs target-primed reverse transcription (TPRT). R2 element from Bombyx mori (R2Bm) has served as an important experimental system for the biochemical understanding of the structure, function, and integration of LINEs. First-strand target site cleavage and TPRT in the current model of integration have been well understood both in vitro (using R2Bm) and in vivo (using LINE-1 elements); however, interpretation of factors involved in second-strand cleavage and second- …

Impacts Of Landscape And Past Climate On Patterns Of Hybridization And Genetic Diversity In Plestiodon Tetragrammus And P. Multivirgatus, Matthew Moseley
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Past hybridization plays an important role in evolution of taxa. We use multiple phylogenetic approaches including single gene sequencing and high-through put sequencing to address the effects of past hybridization in the four-lined skinks, P. tetragrammus, and the variable skink, P. multivirgatus. We show that mitochondrial genes have been introgressed between P. multivirgatus and P. t. brevilineatus. We also show that this introgression has lead to decreased genetic diversity in these lineages. We use species distribution models to show that P. multivirgatus and P. t. brevilineatus shared a large portion of their ranges in the last glacial maximum allowing for …

The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn
The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the use of physical evidence to prove the identity of witches in witchcraft trials from approximately 1300 to 1650 in Western Europe. Throughout this period, trial records for accused witches and witchcraft texts include references to Devil marks. According to contemporary texts, these were physical marks on witches, which were visible to the human eye. Doctors and midwives verified these marks upon examination of the accused witch’s body. In this instance, medical proof in the courtroom verified supernatural powers. This thesis will analyze the intersection between medical and religious beliefs in the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries to …

From "Struggling" To "Example": How Cross-Age Tutoring Impacts Latina Adolescents' Reader Identities, Dustin H. Drake
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Educators and policy makers have shown a consistent concern over the achievement gap. In academic assessments, Latino students have demonstrated lower achievement than their peers, particularly in reading scores. Many researchers attribute the existence of the achievement gap to a school system that ignores Latino culture or perpetuates struggles in Latino students’ reading by being culturally insensitive. Multiple theorists suggest that school systems that better understand Latino identities will be better at instructing Latino students. Many programs, including Latinos in Action, have been implemented in attempts to close this gap. The Latinos in Action program utilizes Latino adolescents as peer …
Effects Of Engineered Carbon And Silver Nanoparticles On Plutella Xylostella Consumption, Growth, Pupation, Survival, And Fecundity, Taiaba Afrin
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) have recently become common in consumer products, and will therefore be entering into both aquatic and terrestrial systems. However, the effects of ENPs on animals is not well characterized. For example, to date there has been no research on the effects of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (common ENPs) on insects. I examined the effects of pure SWCNTs and AgNPs on consumption, growth, food conversion ratio, pupation, survival, fecundity, and expression of CYP6BG1 using fourth instar of diamondback moth (DBM) larvae with the following concentrations: 8.64, 17.28, 34.56, 69.12 and 138.24 µg/ml SWCNTs; …
