Analysis Of Earphone Swab Mitochondrial Dna As An Alternative Material For Identification Examination, Ahmad Yudianto, Yeti Eka Sispitasri, Nola Margaret

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Identification include fingerprint, property, medical, dental, serologic and exclusion methods. In the development, identification methods led to molecular forensics, a new field of science evolving since the 1980s, known as DNA fingerprinting. Specimens widely used in DNA assay for identification are blood spots/bloods, semen spots, vaginal swabs, buccal swabs and bones. In addition to these specimens, the last objects often used by the perpetrators/victims can be used, such as hearing aids (headsets/earphones). In its use, earphones are attached to the outer ear skin; thus, the earwax is suspected to adhere to the device. To date, in Indonesia personal identification is …

Modified Vac Dressing In Sternal Wound Infection Management. Cheap And Feasible Technique In Developing Country, Yan Efrata Sembiring

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Sternal wound infection is a rare but serious complication of cardiac surgery leading to prolonged hospital stay and higher mortality. In the last decades several treatment modalities have been described, of which vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) shows the most promising results. However, the VAC therapy system is expensive, requires extensive amounts of product and needs a power source at all times. Modified VAC dressing to treat sternal wound infection is cheap and feasible technique to use in develop country. This technique can be use as an alternative to the original vacuum-assisted closure and hadshown to serve its function in providing adequatevacuum …

Dna Isolation From Human Urine Stain As An Alternative Material For Personal Identification Examination, Ahmad Yudianto, Yeti Eka Sispitasari

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Accurate determination of personal identity is crucial for an investigation since any inaccuracy may lead to fatal consequences in the judicial process. Identification through DNA analysis involves somatic chromosomes and mtDNA. Each part of the human body can be taken as a specimen since every nucleated cell in the body of an individual has identical DNA sequence. To date, samples for identification through DNA analysis are obtained from blood stains, semen stains, bones, vaginal swab, buccal swab etc. In certain cases, urine stains on the clothing have frequently been overlooked. So far, personal identification through DNA analysis by the use …

A Demonstration Project To Address Juvenile Drug Addiction, Mary Ellen Broaddus Aug 2017

A Demonstration Project To Address Juvenile Drug Addiction, Mary Ellen Broaddus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The rise in adolescent drug use and addiction is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. An eleven year study of youth in European countries found drug use widespread and increasing (Molinaro, Sicilian, & Curzio, 2011). In 2013 there were over 2.8 million new users of illicit drugs, over half of whom were under 18 years of age (‘Drug Facts’, 2015).

Adolescents are at unique risk because biochemical distinctions in their brains, when compared with adults, prompt more risk-taking behaviors (Gallager, 2014). Health risks are considerable and include hypertension, stroke, convulsions and seizures, and liver disease such as cirrhosis and hepatitis. In 2013 …

Metalloproteases Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane, Roman M. Levytskyy, Iryna Bohovych, Oleh Khalimonchuk Aug 2017

Metalloproteases Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane, Roman M. Levytskyy, Iryna Bohovych, Oleh Khalimonchuk

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The inner mitochondrial membrane (IM) is among most protein-rich cellular compartments. The metastable IM sub-proteome where the concentration of proteins is approaching oversaturation creates a challenging protein folding environment with high probability for protein malfunction or aggregation. Failure to maintain protein homeostasis in such a setting can impair functional integrity of the mitochondria and drive clinical manifestations. The IM is equipped with a series of highly conserved, proteolytic complexes dedicated to the maintenance of normal protein homeostasis within this mitochondrial sub-compartment. Particularly important is a group of membrane-anchored metallopeptidases commonly known as m-AAA and i-AAA proteases, and the ATP-independent Oma1 …

We aimed to examine the association between the Alternative Healthy Eating Index updated in 2010 (AHEI-2010), the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DIITM) and risk of mortality in the Whitehall II study. We also conducted a meta-analysis on the DII-based results from previous studies to summarise the overall evidence. Data on dietary behaviour assessed by self-administered repeated FFQ and on mortality status were available for 7627 participants from the Whitehall II cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression models were performed to assess the association between cumulative average of AHEI-2010 and DII scores and mortality risk. During 22 years of follow-up, 1001 participants died …

Synthesizing Human Actions With Emotion, Mousumi Deb Aug 2017

Synthesizing Human Actions With Emotion, Mousumi Deb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Realistic synthesis of human actions is a challenging problem. This thesis investigates the problem of synthesizing actions, with individual variability, under different emotions. Current actions/gesture synthesis, understanding and recognition models do not provide a general framework for synthesizing an extensive range of actions over a large range of emotions. The literature on spectral style transfer provides a plethora of viable approaches for transferring the style of action learned from one individual to another. Our idea is to consider an emotion as a style then use a style transfer algorithm for transferring an emotion from one action to another. This allows us …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Introduction: In kindling, repeated electrical stimulation of certain brain areas causes progressive and permanent intensification of epileptiform activity resulting in generalized seizures. We focused on the role(s) of glutamate and a negative regulator of glutamate release, STXBP5/tomosyn-1, in kindling.

Methods: Stimulating electrodes were implanted in the amygdala and progression to two successive Racine stage 5 seizures was measured in wild-type and STXBP5/tomosyn-1−/− (Tom−/−) animals. Glutamate release measurements were performed in distinct brain regions using a glutamate-selective microelectrode array (MEA).

Results: Naïve Tom−/− mice had significant increases in KCl-evoked glutamate release compared to naïve wild type as …

Albright Uses Avatars, Horses To Improve Mental Health., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

“When I was a college student, I was struggling in an intimate relationship I was forming, and it got to the point where I had to do something about it. So I went into the counseling center, and that’s what really turned me on—noticing the change within myself and the impact of counseling on the way we view our lives.”

That is the way Dr. Glenn Albright explains how he became interested in psychology in general and in counseling in particular. A native of Albany, New York, Albright received his bachelor’s in biology from Parson College in Iowa, his MS …

Mapping The Self: Reconciling Identity Through An Expansion Of The American Road Genre, Tinesha K. Mix Aug 2017

Mapping The Self: Reconciling Identity Through An Expansion Of The American Road Genre, Tinesha K. Mix

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the American road genre. I argue that in addition to the automobile and the highway, a discussion of trains, boats, and walkers and their alternative roads must also be included in the genre. Each method of transportation expands the genre by adding new themes and ideas. Hobos and tramps can take to the road in search of community in order to discover more about themselves; some boatmen can use America’s racial history to discover themselves; walkers can go through a state of liminality in order to discover their internal selves. When these travelers complete their journeys, many …

This Excited Surface: Sound Art Site Specific Artwork, Jane Grant, Jay Auborn, Suvi-Eeva Äikäs

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This Excited Surface is a new artwork that interweaves desire with the mutable structure of the ionosphere. It is a sonic, site-specific work designed for camera obscuras. By inserting coloured gels into the lens of the obscura, the disc of the obscura became a deep yellow sun under the earth. The sound was created from the sun’s interaction with the ionopshere, one of the outer layers of the earth’s atmosphere - a short while after participants arrive in the space a narration about desire, touch and solar physics can be heard. There is also a haptic interface which uses live …

The Role Of Cochlin In The Trabecular Meshwork, Teresia Angelica Carreon Aug 2017

The Role Of Cochlin In The Trabecular Meshwork, Teresia Angelica Carreon

Open Access Dissertations

Glaucoma affects over 70 million people worldwide and can result in irreversible progressive vision loss if left untreated. Primary open angle glaucoma is the most common form of the disease. This disease is characterized by an uncontrolled increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) and this characteristic remains the only modifiable risk factor. The trabecular meshwork (TM) is a filter-like structure responsible for aqueous humor filtration into Schlemm’s canal (SC) and into the episcleral veins (EV). It is believed that obstruction in the TM leads to impeded aqueous humor outflow resulting in an increase in IOP. It has previously been demonstrated that …

Bromodomain And Extraterminal Domain-Containing Protein Inhibition Decreases Inflammation After Spinal Cord Injury, Michelle Diane Rudman Aug 2017

Bromodomain And Extraterminal Domain-Containing Protein Inhibition Decreases Inflammation After Spinal Cord Injury, Michelle Diane Rudman

Open Access Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition resulting in loss of function below the level of injury. Inflammation after SCI promotes cell death, increases injury size, and decreases functional recovery. The inflammatory response is coordinated by many different signaling modalities including the epigenetic modification of promoters and enhancers. Bromodomain and extraterminal domain-containing proteins (BETs) are epigenetic readers that bind acetylated lysines in promoters and enhancers to promote pro-inflammatory transcription. BET inhibition suppresses inflammation in multiple animal models, including rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis. However, the role of BETs in neuroinflammation is not well understood. Using quantitative PCR, I demonstrated BET …

Description Of A New Genus Of Primitive Ants From Canadian Amber, With The Study Of Relationships Between Stem- And Crown-Group Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Leonid H. Borysenko

Insecta Mundi

A detailed study of the holotype of Sphecomyrma canadensis Wilson, 1985 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Canadian amber has led to the conclusion that the specimen belongs to a new genus, here named Boltonimecia gen.n. Since the taxonomy of stem-group ants is not well understood, in order to find the taxonomic position of this genus, it is necessary to review the classification of stem-group ants in a study of their relation to crown-group ants. In the absence of data for traditional taxonomic approaches, a statistical study was done based on a morphometric analysis of antennae. Scape elongation is believed to play an …

Evolution And Metabolic Potential Of Francisella-Like Endosymbionts Of Ticks, Jonathan Graham Gerhart Aug 2017

Evolution And Metabolic Potential Of Francisella-Like Endosymbionts Of Ticks, Jonathan Graham Gerhart

Dissertations and Theses

Endosymbiosis in arthropods involves intracellular bacteria that supply an array of benefits to the host. Endosymbionts likely enhance the health of ticks by provisioning amino acids such as cysteine and tyrosine, and cofactors such as biotin and folic acid that are not available in blood--the sole nutrient source of ticks. Endosymbionts of ticks are of special interest due to their close evolutionary relationship with tick-vectored pathogens that impact livestock and human health. For example, ticks typically contain Coxiella-like endosymbionts (CLEs) that are the closest relatives of the human pathogen Coxiella burnetii. In order to understand the evolutionary relationship …

Implementing An Environmental Citizen Science Project: Strategies And Concerns From Educators’ Perspectives, Yurong He, Andrea Wiggins

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Citizen science seems to have a natural alignment with environmental and science education, but incorporating citizen science projects into education practices is still a challenge for educators from different education contexts. Based on participant observation and interview data, this paper describes the strategies educators identified for implementing an environmental citizen science project in different education contexts (i.e., classroom teaching, aquarium exhibits, and summer camp) and discusses the practical concerns influencing independent implementation by educators. The results revealed different implementation strategies that are shaped by four categories of constraints: 1) organizational and institutional policies, 2) educators’ time and material resources, 3) …

Mountain Biking As A Means To Encourage Public Health And Wellbeing, Scott C. Dillard Aug 2017

Mountain Biking As A Means To Encourage Public Health And Wellbeing, Scott C. Dillard

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Mountain biking is a popular form of outdoor exercise. There are 8.3 million riders in the U.S., 2.8% of the population (The Outdoor Foundation, 2016). The National Survey on Recreation and the Environment (https://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/trends/nsre-directory/) places the number of participants much higher at 42.7 million riders, but their definition is less restrictive (Cordell, 2012). The National Survey includes anyone who has ridden a mountain or hybrid bicycle in the last twelve months, regardless of riding surface, while Outdoor Recreation Participation Top Line Report (The Outdoor Foundation, 2016) estimates are based on riding surface. Therefore, to avoid confirmation bias, the lower Outdoor …

Stress and glucocorticoid (GC) release are common behavioral and hormonal responses to injury or disease. In the brain, stress/GCs can alter neuron structure and function leading to cognitive impairment. Stress and GCs also exacerbate pain, but whether a corresponding change occurs in structural plasticity of sensory neurons is unknown. Here, we show that in female mice (Mus musculus) basal GC receptor (Nr3c1, also known as GR) expression in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons is 15-fold higher than in neurons in canonical stress-responsive brain regions (M. musculus). In response to stress or GCs, adult …
